23rd Street Brewery feels more like a sports bar than a brewery to me.  Inside, it can get very loud, but it has a great patio outside.  Service is very inconsistent.  There is a bartender named Pat who is awesome.  He knows a lot and is friendly and efficient.  Some of the servers aren't knowledgeable when when it comes to the beer.  For example, my friend ordered the flight.  My friend asked our server about the beers.  The server looked at us like we had 50 heads.  So she goes inside and has the bartender write on a piece of paper the orders of the beer on the flight.

I like the wheat and raspberry wheat.  The food is decent.  I usually create my own burger.  For whatever reason, they have the hottest jalapenos in all the land.  The burgers are big and juicy and they have really good fries.  23rd Street Brewery is not a horrible place, but service could be better and it just doesn't compare to Free State.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. Being a brewery, they always have a good selection of beers on tap, great appetizers and good pub food. Their cheesy bread appetizer is one of our favorites to split with a big table. They also have my all-time favorite salad in town: the hazelnut encrusted goat cheese salad, which adding salmon to makes it even more heavenly. However, their food is not stuffy, so my boyfriend can order his Mac and Cheese with Buffalo Chicken on top and also be satisfied.

The service is always good and they can easily accommodate a large or small group. It can get a little slow at peak times, but that is to be expected. It's a great place to watch a game or play trivia with friends, but without feeling like a typical sports bar, so it also makes a good date-spot. I'd highly recommend this restaurant. It's one of our go-to spots when we'd rather not tackle the parking on Mass or the noise of Free State.

23rd Street Brewery has a nice selection of beer, and the happy hour food specials, including some very nice, fluffy, warm pita and standard, creamy-yet gritty hummus, are laudatory. The waitstaff is remarkably pleasant - our waitress promptly attended to a party of 15 or so, never leaving our glasses empty or our stomaches growling.

The clean, amber-wood interior resembles those sophisticated (I say that non-ironically) family-friendly establishments where Mom could get a glass of Reisling and enjoy her hazel-nut encrusted goat cheese salad, Dad could opt for a soda to slurp with his chicken marsala, and the kids could munch on chicken fingers and french fries.

Next time I'm in Lawrence, I'll check this place out for more than just drinks and appetizers - perhaps indulging in homemade pub chips and a giant chocolate cake, because that's a meal...right?

Food is good, but any place that charges $2 extra to get vegetables instead of fries needs a stern talking-to.  Free-State much more personable, accommodating.

Ah, 23rd Street Brewery. So hard for me to neglect for too long because I'm kind of a sucker for beer and pub food, plus it's the closest sit-down restaurant to our place. So we've been quite a few times over the past 2.5 years, and at this point I can give a pretty fair summary.

    The Good/Average:
-Beer. No, it's not as good as Free State's, but honestly, I've never had a bad or undrinkable beer at 23rd. They also tend to be a little more creative with their styles -- for example, today they had a sweet oatmeal stout on tap, and they had a delicious saison on for most of the summer. Their regular lineup is also solid, if nothing crazy delicious. And I appreciate that you can order four ounce tasters.
-TVs. This is a really good place to watch just about any game because there are TVs EVERYWHERE. In fact, this might also be a bad thing because I often get distracted when we're there just to eat...
-Food. Again, it's nothing remarkable and not as good as Free State's, but it's solid across the board. I've had everything from the burger to the flat bread pizza and never been disappointed, and it's nice that they have a large menu. Definitely not gourmet, but it's a brewpub so I'm not sure what people expect.
-Location. It's not downtown! So you can actually park with ease and almost always get a table right away.

    The Bad:
-Service. I've never had a problem with a rude server, but unfortunately you are almost guaranteed to get exceedingly slow service, no matter what time of day you go. Today we went over lunch and it was far from busy, but it still took us over an hour to get out of there. Considering we ordered cold items, I'm not sure why there would be such a delay. Most of the servers give you sporadic attention and it often takes quite a while to have someone show up at your table. There was one really good server there for a while, but I haven't seen him lately and I'm afraid he's left. Moral of the story: if you're in a rush or you're very hungry, you're best off going somewhere else. It's the one downfall of 23rd Street, but unfortunately it's a pretty big downfall.
-Prices. Seem a little high. I'd like to try the Bill Self, but the fact that it's $16 keeps me away from it. And the beers could probably be a little cheaper for what they are.

Overall, I'd give 23rd Street 3.5 stars, and if their service got a little speedier it would definitely be a huge plus.

    I hate this place.
I don't want to go to a restaurant and sit for 2 hours before getting my food. The wait staff is far from pleasing. They have always been unfriendly and distant, only asking the most basic of questions. If I am going to spend a pretty penny for the "experience" of the place, I want to be treated a little nicer. The lighting in the place is ridiculous. It feels as if the staff forgot to turn the lights on, so dark and dingy
I feel as if I could get a better experience and cheaper prices at Applebee's.
The last time I was in I ordered the fried fish basket which was not totally cooked through and the breading was still mushy.
Just a note: Don't look in their kitchen. I caught a few glances while waiting for my food and saw numerous things hanging from the ceiling (wires, ac ductwork, etc). I thought restaurants were required to be clean? Who knows what could drop from the exposed bars in the kitchen into the food...

Had the Reuben on special for lunch today and it was delightful. It was piled high with tasty corned beef and a layer of melty swiss. Personal preference for me, but I liked that it didn't have a TON of sauerkraut. I like just a little and this sandwich was perfect. I did ask for a side of Thousand Island because I like my sandwiches a little more "wet." It was a steal for $7.99 which included a drink and I was totally stuffed.

Other favorites include the Raspberry Wheat beer, the Bill Self (mac and cheese topped with buffalo chicken tenders. YES!), and the spicy cajun pasta.

They also have a really nice patio out back and tons of TVs inside.

23rd street is a sports bar turned brew-pub with decent pricing for specials.

Good; Honestly, barley better than Applebees, but a bit more expensive. Not worth it. Very prole, and quite boring. Not fresh at all. I've never had anything here that was offensive, but never had anything good.

Beer: Dissapointing. Never pay full price, make sure to go during happy hour. Their facilities aren't clean, many details are ignored, and honestly I would not be surprised to find out they use extract for their beers.

Pretty good overall place. Had a better variety of food then Free State Brewing Company. Didn't get a chance to have their beer but the food was great. Wait staff was good as well, although pretty pricy. Other than that, pretty solid place to take a date.

This is a lunchtime favorite.  It's nearby to my workplace and easy to get in and out in an hour.  I'm there at least once a week.

The strongest point first-- the waitstaff is uniformly fantastic.  Everyone knows the food and drink menu thoroughly; I'm not a big beer drinker so I ask a lot of questions, and their suggestions are always dead-on.  Some more "upscale" Lawrence establishments could definitely take a lesson!

The second strong point is the menu.  I usually avoid "American pub" style places like Applebee's and Chili's, because I can get the same frozen chicken sandwich at the supermarket for half the price.  23rd St is the exception-- this is the only place I'll order a chicken strip.  Real chicken, delicious and crisp breading, straightforward and delicious.  The fried cod with their fish and chips platter is fantastic, and absolutely gigantic.  Its crispy beer batter is on the heavy side, but that matches well with the huge portion of moist, tender cod.  Pizzas are also a highlight.  The kitchen is extremely flexible in my experience, and will listen to special requests (light cheese, etc.)

Most dishes come in a little higher-- $1.50-2.50-- than a similar chain restaurant.  The service and scratch kitchen absolutely make up for the difference.  There are plenty of options under $10.

Unfortunately, the ambiance is a little... uneven.  There's tons of TVs, so they pass the sports bar test, but the building itself is weird.  There's a lot of nooks and crannies, a ridiculous high ceiling, occasional pockets of beer/hometown/sports memorabilia, lots of hanging fixtures, and lots of finished concrete.  Also, it's dark-- really, really dark.  The whole thing leads to a somewhat grody feeling.  I'm not implying that the it's not clean, but when it's that dark nothing really looks good.  But again, with that building I don't know what they could do differently to improve it other than more lighting.

Unpretentious menu, solidly executed, and delicious beer.  Good stuff!

Food is always good here.  Ordered the tai salad with dressing on the side.  The salad was weird and bare because I did that.  (note to self) clients enjoyed their food and the ambiance.  Service was slow with clearing plates and getting us our check, though.  They didn't
    seem that busy.

The food was good, the service was good, the prices... a bit high for what you get.

The fried pickles are fantastic, if you go make sure you get those. But at $7.99, they are a perfect example of being overpriced for the size of the serving. I enjoyed my burger, and it was prepared correctly, but it wasn't anything extra fancy that the price would imply. It came with fries but they're standard Sysco-issue and a small handful at that.

If they could bring the prices down a bit, or kick the quality up a notch this would easily be a 4 star or more experience for me.

The pub chips are really good, as well as the beer! Max's Mac & Cheese is delicious, and the servings are generous.

Our extended family of six arrived at the 23rd Street Brewery on a Friday night. The place was busy but not so crowded that werent seated immediately. Our server, Handler, came right over and asked for our drink orders. My brother and I love micro-breweries. We enjoy trying new beers. Handler was very knowledgable about the selections and helped us make a selction based on our likes/dislikes.

There were many beer selections to choose from including a seasonal flavor that changes throughout the year. Unfortunately, my brother's selection did not agree with him. When Handler came to the table, she immediately exchanged it for another beer that was better suited. Everyone enjoyed their beers.

When it came to our meals, we challenged Handler with six different selections many with substitutions. Handler was not rattled by our indecisiveness or our silly jokes.

The entrees came out soon after the second round of drinks. BBQ pulled pork sandwich, chicken pesto pasta, macaroni and cheese, meat loaf, chicken fried steak and calzone.

The portions were enormous! We knew there would be a lot of to-go boxes needed. by the end of the meal. The BBQ pull pork was piled on top of the bun. The meat was tender and the sauce was tasty and tangy. The chicken pesto pizza was perfectly baked on a thin crust. The chicken was plentiful and the seasonings were just right. Our mac-n-cheese expert gave his dish two thumbs up and said it was "very cheesy".

The meat loaf dish came with two thick slices  and a mountain of mashed potatos. The brown gravy complimented the flavorful spices in the meat loaf.
The chicken fried steak was a little tough and was the only negative mark on our meal. The pepperoni/sausage calzone was the size of a football! Stuffed with meat and cheese and sauce, it was all I could do to eat the whole thing. It was a challenge I was not going to lose.

Lawrence is a college town. And while it bothered me to be surrounded by so many Jayhawks, this a great atmosphere to enjoy the game. Dozens of TV's surround the restaurant and bar. The largest was about 12 feet wide!

When you go to the 23rd Street Brewery, try the beer sampler to get a taste of their samplings. And don't wear an O-State shirt. You'll get stared at.

Handler the server. Pulled pork BBC, chicken pest pizza, mac n cheese, alone, meat loaf, chicken fried steak.

Still love the food and beer.

This visit however I noticed some unpleasant things. First, the light bulbs in the women's restroom had a noticeable layer of dust on them so did the light fixtures that hang above the tables in the dining room.  The person with me had his growler filled and the cap they put on the growler was covered with mold on the inside of the cap, that was the most disturbing part.

I like this place. Was very busy when we went this weekend (just after a KU football game) but our server was very informative in telling us up front that it might take a little longer than usual for our food to arrive. She brought us free pub chips even though we didn't ask.
I had the Bill Self pasta (good stuff), my girlfriend had the Naked Nachos (she loved them), her friend had the Fish & Chips (she was not a fan).
The beer was cold and always delicious. You never fail with ordering Raspberry Wheat Beer
For any KU fan visiting Lawrence this is a great place to eat and drink at. Big enough to hold a lot of people so wait time for a table is never too long.
I plan on going back more in the future.

Food was fine. Tasty and well made. Traditional pub meats sports bar. Waitstaff was superb. Not overbearing or neglectful. We came on Saturday night and were seated (in a comfy booth) immediately. The atmosphere is kind of noisy but that's to be expected with the type of establishment. My husband thought it was chilly inside. I didn't. Pricing was a little high considering the type of food they sell. Fish and chips and a bratwurst and one beer gave us a $30 bill.
All in all? A fine place. Didn't change my life.

This is a sorry excuse for a brewery.

Those who feel this is a 3-4 star place, should get out more... well leave Kansas more.

As we waited for our flight, which i passed by  as it sat on the bar on my way to the washroom, the waitress text'd and showed other people photos on her phone. There were 3 groups of people on the patio along with us and there were 3 recently empty tables. I know this because the waitress couldn't be bothered to clean up any of the tables. They sat that way the entire time we were there.

Out of the 8 beers on the flight, 2 were decent. The waitress forgot one of the beers so we couldn't try it. She took forever to get us water and the check. She also never cleared any of the tables outside, which I am not a snob, but it was kinda gross.

Anyone that likes to visit different breweries, avoid this place. It's not worth the effort.

I' went to 23rd Street Brewery recently on a late Friday. I have to admit, I am impressed with their beers. I tried them several years ago, and the brew was distinctly average...not bad...just not interesting enough to make me drive across town.

I tasted a few different varietals on this trip, and they were all solid examples of the style.

The food is generic "american grill" fare, and nothing spectacular, but certainly just fine if you're there with a large group, or to watch a game on the gi-nor-mous TV(!).

All-in-all, 23rd Street offers a solid, place to have a nice local-brewed pint and tasty pub grub.

I have been to 23rd Street Brewery a few times.  I am a bigger fan of the beer than of the food.  The beer they brew here is pretty good and I enjoy the various types they produce.  It is a great place to take your KU students so they can have a good meal and enjoy company.  There are TV's here to watch the games and on KU game days it is very tough to get in so go early.

I had the patty melt.  I think it was okay, nothing overly special.  I'd go with a different choice next time.  I'd give it three stars.  I like the venue it gives a lot of options for hanging out, sitting with family or enjoying a game. I'd give the venue four stars.  The beer is the star.  I have always enjoyed the beer selection at 23rd Street Brewery.  I'd give the beer four and a half stars.

Overall I'd give them four stars and will go back again.

First review after three trips. I've had trouble reviewing 23rd Street so far but have finally figured it out. I can review this place in nine words or less. Nothing sticks out. Nothing too good, nothing too bad.
With this goes the caveat that I  have not yet tried all their beers, the ones I have tried have been good, tasty and typical.
    Food was average.
I'd give them a middle of the road three stars but when I asked for a certain game to be put on the TV, the manager said that they only had basic cable and not the channel for which I was looking. Basic Cable in a sports bar/restaurant/pub! I wasn't looking for anything too obscure, we were talking about the playoffs!

Pretty good beer.  I love that they brew their own with inventive names and specialty beers rotated often.  Their menu offerings are varied but rather pricey for what you get.  $15 for chicken and a side.  Their pizza are a better option.  Plenty big for 2-3 people and only ~$10, the BBQ chicken is very tasty as is the Thai Chicken.  Their crust is great too.  Come after

A pint is ~$4 but pitchers ($7) are cheap on Tuesday.

The hummus is a good choice too are snacking.

This is a nice date place. Quiet enough to talk with nice ambiance.  They have extensive outdoor seating as well for chilling with friends.

Standard pub fare with standard quality. Nothing flavorful, clean-tasting, or original. Extremely heavy - but they give you huge portions. You need a drink to wash this stuff down. Their beer is pretty good, but does not compare to Free State. Overall I'd say the food is an ounce better (their sweet potato fries are actually great), though by no means excellent. The interior is more pub-like and less crowded/noisy than Free State, a perk. I'd go to 23rd Street on a more low-key night for their fries and decent beer (save Free State for when you and your palate are in for a bolder beer adventure).

Awesome. My first dining experience in Kansas (yohoho, I'm not in Cali anymore, homies), and it was great!

Our server was amazing in accommodating the group of about 20 people. Service was fast, and we never had to ask for more chips or water.

I ordered a side of the sweet potato fries, which were an insane deal. For $2.99, you get a HUGE basket of fries that could feed quite a few people. The salmon topped with sun dried tomato was amazing as well. The fish was grilled to a juicy perfection, and I loved the pretty grill marks.

Good stuff, and would love to come back for more :)

I've been meaning to give 23rd Street a rating for some time now.  I was very surprised to see how low their ratings are.

This is one of the best restaurants in Lawrence.  Sure, if it were in a bigger city I may give it one less star, but for a small college town with mostly college kid employees it is great.  My fiance and I frequent 23rd Street and we have yet to have a bad experience.  Even the one time they messed up my fiance's order they fixed it promptly.

There are two dishes on the menu that I think are outstanding.  The first is the Hazelnut encrusted Goat Cheese Salad. I hardly ever order a salad at a sit down restaurant but this one is to die for.  But nothing tops the Chicken Fried Chicken.  Every element of this dish is amazingly tasty.  From the crunchy breading on the chicken to the garlicy green beens to the rustic mashed potatoes.  The portion is huge which gives me left overs for several lunches!

The service is always decent.  Never amazing, but always polite and prompt.  It is worth giving it a another shot if you haven't been there in a while.  Especially if you are looking for a place to watch a game.

I've only been there about 4 times, and the service is always somewhat slow, but their servers are nice and not hard on the eyes.

They make a killer Thai chicken pasta that I've ordered the last three times I was there.  The last time the sauce was a little runny, but delicious nonetheless.

I've been there twice now.  The food has been pretty good each time.  The first time, my friends and I tried the pizza.  I only remember the Greek one being a stand-out!  The other night, I had Craig's Calzone.  It's filled with several different meats that mesh well.  I do doubt you can eat it in one sitting though!  The calzone made a great leftovers too.  One thing that's necessary when visiting 23rd Street is the Pub Chips!  Amazing crunch kettle chips that's better than good!

I don't like writing negative reviews.  I usually hold off unless I have either one really bad experience or several subpar ones.  This place needs a review because it is absolutely terrible.  I went with my wife, brother, and parents, and we were all disappointed with the food.

The fish and chips were the worst I've ever had.  Not crispy on the outside, and soggy as hell with no flavor on the inside.  I generally like salty food but the fries were so over salted that I could not finish them.

In additiion to the food being bad, the waitress (who was at least friendly) took over 10 minutes to bring our check, and when she finally did, she had separated it into five separate tickets without being asked to, which seemed very strange, especially considering we were obviously a family.  This made it take even longer because my dad was paying for the meal, so they had to re run these many separate tickets as one which they should have done in the first place.

To summarize: SLOW service, BAD food.

A confession about this review: I have not tried the beer here, which seems like an important factor when considering a brewery. So, this is a more limited look at the food, service, and atmosphere.

The food is typical and average. I first had the pulled pork sandwich, which came with almost too much meat. It was very tender but a little flavorless -- completely inoffensive and completely immemorable. The meals I've had since then are similarly pleasant but unremarkable.

Each time I've eaten there the service has been good. The servers have been courteous, attentive, and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is also nice, with a rather cool "brewery" feel. The seating is gently scattered and makes you feel like you're not too close to anyone, giving you a sense of privacy whether it's a quiet weeknight or a crowded game night.

Overall, you it's pretty typical sports pub fare with an above average atmosphere. For the price it falls just a touch under fully satisfying, but you could certainly do worse for a fun place to watch a KU basketball game and have some food.

Review: 3 stars (2.5 stars plus .5 for the atmosphere)

As some of the other reviewers said, this brewery/restaurant is an offshoot of 75th Street Brewery. If you haven't been to 75th Street, then I suggest taking a trip over there and joining KC Hopps while you are at it.

23rd Street has an interesting building. Certainly styled inside to advising it is a fully functional brewery. Their beers are good. I can't say they are the best in Lawrence or the KC area, but they are good. Some of them are quite unique. I personally like the more hoppy beers. I liked the Oatmeal Stout, Hopsidion, and Bitter Professor.

The food is pretty decent but can take some time to make it to your table. That isn't always a bad thing. Plus having more beer along with unlimited pub chips makes it better. The pub chips are made in-house and are worth it to occupy those "intro beers". The Petty Melt is good which is what I ordered the first time having dinner there. Last time I ordered one of their Calzones (Craigs Italiano) which was pretty big and decent. The waiter suggested to my brother to order Max's Mac & Cheese with a medium rare steak on top. We thought that sounded a little strange but he took her advice... I was happy to sample it and it was good! Heck, the Mac & Cheese was good just by itself.

The service has been fine for all my visits. Like I hinted, food took some time. That is okay as long as it is good. On my second visit, our waiter was worthless when talking about the beer. The first and third visits were fine. They at least could get answers or make suggestions.

I suggested at least trying if you are into brew pubs.

The beer here is not bad (from what I remember). Not nearly as good as a certain other (older) brewery in Lawrence, but certainly better than most of the piss water mega-brewery swill sold by the gallon out of taps downtown.

The food here is not bad, either. I recall the Hank Booth burger in particular as being phenomenal. My partner is a fan of the calzone. I've also had the Reuben (good), the French Dip (really good), and the Hazelnut Encrusted Goat Cheese Salad (excellent, especially with the salmon option).

Portions are generous with everything but the "Healthy Menu" options. Granted, they say right there on the menu that the portions are smaller, but when my Tilapia Florentine came out, it had probably six leaves of spinach draped artfully about the piece of fish. Yes, it was very tasty (especially for pan-seared fish at a brewery restaurant). But it would've been great to have the spinach featured as something other than a garnish. My partner's lettuce leaf, served under his calzone, provided more vegetable!

Kudos to 23rd St. Brewery for providing a few specifically labeled gluten-free menu items. They just need to clue in that gluten-free shouldn't mean paltry amounts of the side vegetables. If someone's not eating bread (or rice or corn, etc.), that person is going to want something else fleshing out their dinner plate.

The servers here are always great. I think it's a little strange how they only have female servers, but I'll not complain because the women they do hire are excellent at their job. I've not had Bill B.'s experience about getting charged for substitutions, but that would put a damper on my choice to eat here. I'll try to remember to ask about that next time we go.

Guess what, there's another brewery in town and it's mighty fine.

Ok, it's not as famous as the one downtown and doesn't get enough recognition because it's overshadowed by that 800 lb gorilla that everyone thinks of when they think of beer in Lawrence..

I remember this location changing hands many times, most notably before it opened when the place was set to explode and they had to pour all the beer down the sewers of Lawrence.  Seeing the streets of Lawrence run with unconsumed beer caused a part of me to die that day.

A few years back this was the second location of 75th Street Brewery in Waldo and eventually they broke away and became a local establishment.  I missed the beer mug club and the KC Rewards card, but generally the move was the right thing.

The place has lots of local flavor, pun intended.  You can get the Hank Booth Burger or a Bill Self.  I can't remember what the dishes are, but it's darn fun to go to a place that has sandwiches named after famous people.  It's definitely a sports bar with games playing on a variety of screens.  No Langston Hughes salad :(

The highlight of the place is the beer.  It's really good beer!  Makes sense for a sports bar.  Decent variety , though it tends to be on the safe side.  I'd like to see them branch out into funkier beers that have a bit more character.  Vanilla Stout was probably the best beer I had there.  I've never been disappointed in the beers.  What I'd kill for is jalapeno beer in this town just once.

Food is typical bar food with a bit more variety.  My favorite is the fried pickles.  Sinfully delicious.  They are spears though and I prefer pickle chips. No big deal though.  I'm only allowed to have them when I've been really good.  Forget ice cream as an incentive:  mama's gotta have her fried pickles.

The nachos are awesome too and they are EXTREMELY spicy with those fresh jalapenos on top.  You'll feel them a few days after and I won't go into more detail than that.

They've got a new menu now that is about the friendliest I've seen to vegetarians. I'm waiting to try the peppers stuffed with couscous.  Typically I get a nice calzone there or the goat cheese salad.

Now, I'll most likely  get the new Local Burger veggie burger there they sell in partnership with Local Burger in town.  Mmmm.  Gotta get the pub chips with that!  I wonder if they'll name that one after me?

Service is acceptable and can be spotty at times.  It's what I'd expect in a college town.  Some servers are awesome and some simply phone it in.  When I've complained on occasion, I've gotten a very accommodating response from the management.

Overall, expect great beer with an upscale bar menu that everyone can find something they like.

When you are looking for good food and beer in Lawrence, and don't want to wait an hour for a table, check out 23rd street and be sure to have them name the veggie burger after me.

There are three main reasons for coming here: food, beer, and sports. I am not into beer, but I hear it's not bad. One of my beer fanatic friends (as in, it is hard to find a beer he has not tried and he has made his own before) preferred it over Free State's.

In any case - food! I enjoy the food here. It's not *amazing* but I think it's pretty good, and very reasonably priced - always leftovers to take home. If you are looking for a big appetizer to share, the cheesy garlic bread (may have different name) is great. You get a lot, it's easy to divide among many people, and tastes nice a cheesy. It's like cheesy bread or cheese sticks other places might serve (pizza without the tomato sauce). Maybe not the best for two, but leftovers are not a bad thing.
They have a decent variety, typical sports bar food and some fancier looking entrees. I really like the macaroni and cheese. It has a bit of spice to it (just a tiny bit), and is creamy, and again, a huge serving. I have had a variety of things here and have enjoyed all of them. The only item I am not too hot about are the calzones, but I think maybe I'm just not a calzone person - I'd rather have a pizza with the same toppings.

Sports - they do have a decent amount of TV's. I have gone here a couple times for the purpose of watching sports. If you are planning on watching a KU game, be sure to come early. In addition to their TVs, they also have a free bus that runs from the restaurant to the football stadium. It doesn't run often (maybe 2-3 trips to the game, same returning), but I live on that side of town, and hate traffic, so it's a nice service to have available.

Atmosphere I enjoy - I like the bar/brewery area. It's is loud though, so not the best place if you are looking for something peaceful or intimate. Don't recall ever having bad service here.

The food was good bar food.  Nothing was wrong with it, but nothing about it was over the top amazing.

We went on a sunday, so the beer fishbowls were $6!  Pretty fantabulous deal right there.  I got a light beer that I could drink pretty smoothly even when it got warm, which it will since its so much of it.  But boyfriend got a dark beer which got gross as it got warm.  But we solved this problem easily by getting a glass of just ice and putting the entire glass of ice in the beer (glass and all so we chilled it with out watering it down) and it fixed it right up.

Our waitress was attentive, friendly, and great.  When boyfriend asked her to change the channel on the huge screen to a different sport (that had been on a smaller one) she gladly oblidged.

We spent more than we planned, but we had a $25 gift certificate so it was expected.

The place also had a comfy cozy feel of a restaurant and a brewery.  I liked it!

It had been awhile since we last dined here, and were pleasantly surprised with the updated Menu.  Service was good and everything was timely, but it was not busy at the time we were there.   Bloody Mary's were on special and it was one of the best I have ever tasted....perfect!!

Food was not outstanding, but good pubfare.

We will definetely go back to try the micro-brews and more menu items.

On a Friday night in Lawrence, we did have a 20 minute wait or so; I wasn't surprised, but it was remarkable that something this far away from Mass street would be so busy.  When we sat down at the table, they put us at a small-ish 4-top that was a little tight.  One thing that would have helped was that I would have loved to hear more about the various beers that were on tap (and there were many!), but nothing was written down!

I had a hard time choosing what to eat for dinner, but this was because there were so many great things to pick from!

The food was relatively quick to the table, and the drinks were served quickly.

I would definitely come back again on my next trip to Lawrence!

The service here is so-so, tonight my waitress was actually awesome so that was a plus. Lots of TVs which is no different from most other sports bars. I like beer, not a connoisseur, but I like it enough to know that some of the beer's at 23rd Street Brewery are pretty tasty.  The food is what you should come to expect, typical appetizers and sandwiches, etc... Tonight I got the "Big Billy's BBQ" and I wont get that again.

But as for the rest of the food, is it good? Hm...well I would describe it as "managable." Good enough to keep you from having a bad time, but nothing to write home about.  Seems like every time I have been here (maybe 5 times in a few years) it's because Free State Brewery is packed beyond imagination. But go there with some friends, get some beer, watch some sporting events, and engage in good conversations with your buds.

I went here with a group of 7 and while the service could have been quicker, the food, drinks, and atmosphere were all well worth it!!  I had a martini because I"m not much of a beer drinkers, but the beer drinkers around me were enjoying the selection and their drinks.

The apps were yummy and the mac and cheese awesome!! I'd highly recommend this as a stop if you're not in a hurry and want some good drinks and bar food.

23rd Street is the other brewery in Lawrence. They brew consistantly good beer and serve tasty food in a suburban pub atmosphere. I like the Black Bean Burger made Rock Chalk Style, with hot sauce and bleu cheese. I also like that 23rd Street has little icons next to menu items letting you know if it is vegetarian, or what type of meat (beef, pork, chicken and fish) is in the dish. They have some good pasta dishes and some tasty, if heavy, appetizers. In summertime the outdoor patio is a great spot for happy hour. Also, I love that the owners buy renewable energy credits. The service is hit or miss, they seem to employ alot of heavily made up sorority girls, which you can interpret as you like.
    Overall:
    4 star beer
    3.5 star food
    5 stars for sustainable energy
    2.5 stars for service
