We were looking for someplace to hang out at after the local restaurants had closed. Â At the Boar's Head, they recommended Abe's. Â As we neared the place, we heard the sweet sound of live blues coming out of the door. Â We walked in to a wall of humidity (the a/c was "on the fritz") to a less than crowded bar. Â Girls dancing to the guitarist and the harmonica playing blues singer, an eclectic mix of people sprinkled about the small, dim bar...it was perfect. Â
The Blackhawks even won the Stanley Cup the night we were there...they were playing it on a flatscreen TV above the live music. Â Like I said: eclectic.
We just happened to walk in on "open jam" night (a Monday), but I wish I were local for this place alone. Â It would be my "go to" every night out.
The live blues, hot & humid bar, the small crowd ...I walked in there a stranger and walked out feeling like I belong. Â What else can I say? Â The place has that elusive magical property of awesomeness.
This place was great...friendly service, good drinks and reasonable prices. We were SO glad it was right across the street from our hotel! It became our home away from home bar...we started the night there and ended the night there. Oh and sweet little patio for the smokers, which we are.
Review Source:Alcohol. You can get this anywhere in Savannah. Ambience and service is what makes one place distinguish itself from another. Cool ambience, but, the service was horrible - having being in all levels of the food service business from high school through graduate school, I think I have a good idea of what it's all about. The female bartender on this particular saturday night had horse blinders on - absolutely not paying attention to me or my girlfriend at the bar of only 10 people maybe (check out pictures others have posted here)?? I mean, I understand that this is supposed to be a chill bar, but come on. Selection of brews here are great, but then again, I'd like to drink them rather than fantasizing about it while waiting to finally get the bartender's attention!!!!! Booooooo this place - never returning again.
Review Source:Another 10 dollar minimum on credit cards = well I guess I'll pay for your round too.
Definitely a cool local bar. And I'm not going to use the word "dive" anymore, because it's too overused in this town and becoming a fad, like all the hipsters. So yeah, a chill and cozy bar with a lot of atmosphere. You walk in to see a couple tables in low light with a well stocked bar and a pair of really good bartenders who look after their customers. In the next room there's some game tables Fooseball and such, then there's some outdoor seating as well tucked behind a brick wall or if you're from NYC.. an exposed brick wall.
Come here for the low key atmosphere, for a good drink and ability to hear the person next to you. I'll definitely be coming back here.
Abe's on Lincoln went into a space in a converted old house which has been a bar as long as I can remember: indeed, apparently much longer than that as it has held a liqour license since 1790! The house itself is typical to this part of Savannah (the northeast corner of the Historic District) and is on the corner of the street with the FBI's massive Savannah office just next door to the east. The bar--as others have noted--is small, tiny even, but it's very cozy and with dark colors and low ceilings makes for an intimate--nearly conspirational--atmosphere.
The crowd here is not all hipsters: yes, it's popular with SCAD kids but you'll also encounter lawyers from the nearby offices of Hunter Maclean Exley & Dunn and probably even some FBI agents around happy hour when they get off work. Early in the evening it's as much suits as skinny jeans here. The staff is very friendly and the mood is different from other Historic District bars.
There is something quite wonderful in a throwback way about port cities, especially in the south: whether hearing tales of life on the high seas down by the docks in New Orleans or talking admiralty law at a bar like this in Savannah, there is a feeling of grand industry and mystery in ports. Places like Abe's encourage that quality and apparently, Abe's is carrying on a very long legacy of having a watering-hole on this specific street-corner.
Very unique atmosphere - to call it "tiny" is an overstatement. Small footprint, very low, dark ceilings - the place was built a LONG time ago - very cool indeed!! Not too crowded on a Saturday night, although we were early for an after dinner drink. Bartender was great and offered us a stout pour on the cocktails. We will have to come back another time for a longer visit!!
Review Source:You can't beat the history of this place  which has had a liquor license since 1790! Drinks and crowd notwithstanding this is such a cool place! Ask the bartender about the layout of the place while you enjoy a local brew. We did a mini pub crawl in Savannah and found this place to be the most interesting! During the day the crowd was far from the skinny jeans type, but who cares about what other people are wearing here anyway!
Review Source:Very cool place, and not a pair of skinny jeans in sight when we went. Â Calling Abe's tiny is an understatement, but it feels cozy rather than claustrophobic. Â We popped in for a few beers early one evening, and were pleasantly surprised to find a decent beer selection and a friendly bartender who made us feel at home as soon as we walked in. Â I'd love to be a fly on the wall in this place, because in the short time we were there we learned some colorful stories and met some interesting people. Â Jefferson the bartender is a former SCAD student, and he not only tells some of the great aforementioned stories, but also pours some good high-gravity beer. Â He's done some of the Abe illustrations on some of the walls - definitely worth checking out. Â He also did the artwork for the t-shirt.
If you're looking for overpriced martinis and modern decor, this isn't your place. Â As for us, we were looking for a place where we could relax, knock back a few beers, and meet a few cool people. Â If we lived in Savannah, I could see us becoming regulars here, but since we don't, we'll definitely be going back on our next trip to Savannah!
Strike one -- total hipster bar. Â Skinny jeans and ironic haircuts as far as the eye could see. Â Requisite fixies parked just inside the door.
Strike two -- blood in the bathroom. Â Like, on a tissue thrown on the floor, and then dripped across the floor. Â Not exactly a scene from Law & Order, but certainly not what you want to see when you're already going to the bathroom.
Strike three -- telling the bartender about said blood and staying another 15 minutes without him ever cleaning it up. Â
If you are a hipster with all your shots and a strong stomach, definitely go here. Â If not, skip it.
I'm pretty sure Abe's  was around when Lincoln was actually alive.  I love this place...and cozy is almost a tongue-in-cheek description.  Cozy, though it is...Abe's is TINY...and super comfortable.  The bartender was a former SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) student and was a really fun guy to talk to.  We had a "best man" from a wedding telling us about his Ju Jitsu career, two vegans trying to convert us, and a guy that just got out of the Navy hanging out with his mom.  This place was a trip and had a nice high-gravity beer on tap.
*If I lived in Savannah, I would frequent Abe's.
Wow, a real neighborhood bar north of Broughton Street! You don't see too many of those but Abe's deserves the distinction. My friends and I go out for drinks downtown maybe 1-2 times a month and Abe's is almost always in our list of top picks. If you expect to be downtown for dinner, movie or theater Abe's is a fine choice for a casual drink afterwards. It's cozy for sure - and expect it to be jampacked after 10pm on a Friday or Saturday night, with a mix of visitors and locals. You can sit in one of the two low and dark wood paneled rooms, but the outdoor patio is my pick for a perfectly wonderful place to enjoy a warm breeze and a cool beer, especially before sundown.
Not pretentious, not cutesy - Abe's is just a classic local's spot.
Spent a very pleasant couple of hours here reading my paper on a Wednesday afternoon. They had Indian Brown Ale and Guinness on tap, plenty of spirits for whatever drinks you can imagine and there's popcorn available if you want it. Old style tavern looks with a touch of class. Wooden flooring and oak beams give it that cosy feel. Good, lively crowd and definitely a place to be away from the tourists and bustle of River Street. As an Englishman living in this fine country, it's as close to a real pub I've found anywhere.
