Honestly, I didn't order anything while I was here (but the food looked amazingggggg). I came with friends for trivia night.

Trivia was okay - it was hard to hear the questions being read.

The staff was attentive.

The actual bar was really pretty (look at the ceiling!!) and clean.

A nice, trendy place to hang out with friends. I'd be back.

Roomy, basic decor, palatable though unremarkable tap and bottle list...trying to keep up with actual tap rooms and leave Bud/Miller holes in the past, but Stella a craft berr does not make...

A great pub with loads of proper beer and genuinely good food. Emily the bartender is a particularly splendid feature!

Excellent burgers, good beer selection, comfortable bar and restaurant space. The burgers come on pretzel buns, which are insanely delicious. This was my first experience with pretzel bun burgers, and I'm guessing it could be yours, too! Worth checking out. Like I said, they have some good beers, too. The bartender we had was knowledgeable, and very generous with the samples she allowed us. I always like that, beer samples.

However, Amsterdam Tavern is like many bars near Columbia, a bit overpriced. But I'll be back for some sports and burgers, yes I will indeed. See you there, sports bros!

Bartenders are awesome, they have vinegar for my fries, and awesome steak nachos. Watch out for drunk narcissist Columbia law students though!:-)

Friendly, chill, lots of tv screens.

Burger: fine, big size.

Sweet potato fries: pretty good.

Southwest chicken wrap: tasty.

Six point sweet action: good draft.

Stopped in we were going to go to the new place the ellington next door. The menu looked.. meh... and prior to that the women had given me a nasty look when i was with my dog I guess we were walking to close to her restaurant? anyway... thats for another review.
With that being said we decided the specials on the board for Amsterdam Tavern looked amazing. Pulled pork sliders with ham, cheese on pretzel bread.... umm the pretzel bread was un-fucking-beliveable. DELICIOUS. I mean the entire slider was delicious. My partner had the lobster salad sliders and we had fries. Fries were delicious... his sliders were delicious.
Nice for lunch. I loved it. I'm so happy this is in my neighborhood and i finally tried it. Can't wait to go back!

Great spot. Food is delicious and they always have good beers on tap. I have ordered salads, sandwiches, and entrees and you cannot go wrong. The drinks are great too. The berry battered boyfriend (I think that's what it is called) is delicious and after 2 you will be feeling it. I come and sit outside a bunch but it is usually in the shade. They have 1 or 2 TVs inside that you can pretty much see from anywhere...
Def check it out.

I actually really love Amsterdam Tavern and the food is way better than your average bar food...

BUT! I've been there two times when there was no soap in the bathroom at the top of the stairs. Seriously...that's gross. Both times I searched high and low and there was no soap.

This past weekend my friend also went to the bathroom at the top of the stairs (as opposed to the one at the bottom of the small flight) and confirmed that she also couldn't find any soap. I then noticed two people working in the kitchen and the bartender all go to that bathroom. I have no idea if the people from the kitchen then washed their hands with soap in the kitchen (probably not), but the bartender exited the soap-less bathroom and came right back to the bar and started making drinks.

EMPLOYEES MUST WASH HANDS! Wet does not equal wash. It seriously doesn't compute.

Even more infuriating, the next time I went to the bathroom at the bottom of the flight of stairs--two bottles of soap. Am I being punked?

This is a great dive bar just south of Columbia U. with an exceptional selection of great beers and nice servers.

On my most recent visit, I just missed the one and only case of Brooklyn Brewery Black Ops bottles that they were offering for $20 (which I believe is even cheaper than you pay in stores), but there were plenty of other beers from around the states to try.

Our server gave us healthy samplings of a number of different beers before we made our choices, something for which I'm forever grateful. Among the great beers they had on tap were Great Divide's Yeti, a Troeg's Mad Elf, and the first beer I've ever had from a New Jersey Brewery, River Horse's Belgian Freeze.

I was pleased with the beer selection, the service, and my friend who ordered the wings got a healthy serving of about ten wings at a reasonable price and couldn't finish them off.

Also, there were a number of televisions showing college football and NBA games, which I also appreciated.

The one thing that somewhat lacked here was a good atmosphere/crowd and thus I wouldn't make a habit of coming here, but it's a good place to stop by from time to time.

We love this place! The food is not great but the beers are awesome! Excellent always changing selection with a great happy hour. Reasonable (not cheap) prices. Very clean. Friendly servers. Never any trouble getting a place to sit but always pleasantly full so there are people to look at. This bar is a Manhattan Valley gem!

(Would have given it 5 stars but the food is not consistent.)

I've been to the Amsterdam a number of times and, despite my two-star rating, will probably go again; mostly because it's very convenient to my place. Were it not for its proximity I would definitely not make a special trip. Here are some high/low lights from recent visits: this past Sunday evening, we (2 of us) went in to have a drink and some dinner. There were a number of people at the bar watching the game but nearly all the tables were empty. One waitress and one bartender were on duty. We sat there for a bit too long without anyone coming by our table and when it became obvious that no one was going to offer service, my companion (aka the Hillbilly Filly) chased down the waitress who then brought menus and flatware. My burger (touted as being made from their own special blend of beef) was ordered medium. It came well-done and the fries were soggy. As I tucked into the fries, I remembered that, on prior visits, the fries had been soggy too. The burger wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special either. When we had finished, we again had to get up and hunt down the waitress in order to get our check. To compound these food and service shortcomings, when she came back with my change, she had rounded the change up in her favor, i.e. the bill was $47.32 and instead of giving me back $12.68 change from the $60 I had given her, she gave me $12 even. This never fails to annoy the shit out of me--even though it only amounts to a few cents, it's presumptuous. If they round it in my favor, as is the custom, that's one thing but the other way is just obnoxious.
Another time I recall being here, in late summer, the HF and I sat at a table outside in the evening to have some drinks and a bite. Out table had been decorated by a pigeon and when the waitress showed up the first time, I pointed out the bird shit on the table and politely asked her to clean it, Pollock-esque though it was. She returned with menus and water but did not clean it. When she came back and asked for our order, I again asked that she call in the bird shit remediation team to deal with the problem. The second request did the trick, but that was one too many times to have to ask for bird crap to be cleaned from a table at which I was about to eat.
The third visit to the AT, that I can recall, was a more pleasant experience. The place was packed and we came to eat. Despite the hubbub, a friendly waitress met us at the door and quickly found us a vacant table in the back of the place, which was nice as it afforded us relative quiet to eat and talk. I had one of their salads that had blue cheese, walnuts, and cranberries and it was fresh and tasty. No complaints there. So, it's hit and miss. It's almost always busy so clearly, people like it.
For many years, before it became the Amsterdam Tavern, this bar was a true scum pit of a dive bar called the Night Café. That place was much more WYSIWYG, for my money. If you're going for the beers at AT, of which they have a terrific selection, you'll probably be happy. The food and service is decidedly below average however.

Nice welcoming place with a good menu and lots of rotating beers on tap. The nachos are fresh and excellent. The interior is cool too. Dive Bar is closer to where I live, but Amsterdam Tavern is well worth the extra walk.

Stopped through here with my good friend who's actually a bar owner himself, so of course we got a bit of the 'royal treatment'. Nice Tavern, regular-type bar atmosphere, reasonable prices (for New York City)

I was quite enthused that upon checking in here i received a coupon for shots, which i proceeded to buy a round for the table. Good time, next time i'm in the area i'll be sure to stop by and say hi to the nice staff!

As happens so much in New York, signals get crossed. "You have a reservation? No one told us anything about it." That's why I always make reservations in person... but even then it doesn't help.

"You have a reservation," says the waitress at A.T.?

What did help was the waitress... and the patrons in this small place. "Would you mind?" "Just over there." "I hate to inconvenience... " "No problem! We're table nomads." Wow! It was easier than a Soho stumblebunny! Five minutes and we had our own large table.

So, despite communication breakdowns: the number one great thing about this bar: accommodating waitstaff and even MORE accommodating patrons. Chase us away from our table just a we were passing into that other's-eyes-gaze? No problem!

The number two great thing about this bar was Caitlin, our waitress. (As this is a small place, she was sometimes joined by waitress number two, but we didn't get HER name.) Caitlin was Janey-on-the-spot, with the good humor to be able to put up with our international group of reprobates.

Number 3 is the ceiling. It isn't- but should be- a cliche that you can't have a good bar without a good ceiling. A good ceiling is a sign of integrity... stability... New Yorkitude. And this place has a doozy. Something to be proud of.

Number 4 is a pretty good beerlist. While it's no Peculier Pub, they do have a nice selection including a delicious Christmas beer from Ommegang.

The only drawbacks are a somewhat cramped space... oh yeah... and lack of communication among the staff. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NY drinkers, a different bar every week.

I'm a regular costumer at the tavern. Mainly because the food is good and the bartenders are super cool.
My main complaint about the bar is one of the managers. I was hanging out at the tavern on Halloween night and the place was crowded. The owner Mark put his hands on me and Spoke to me in a disrespectful manner. i felt humiliated and belittled. i am now searching for another bar where i can hang at, where the owner doesn't get drunk and disrespect the customers. if you would like to keep a loyal customer please email me at ruizjoel82@gmail.com.

I had a good time at this place. The drinks were a little overpriced, but whatever. They had a good variety.

Except, they had a big sign for pumpkin flavored stuff, specifically mentioning pumpkin cider, which was why my friend and I stopped in for a drink. Turns out they were out of pumpkin cider, but since we had already trekked so far from the door to the bar stool we just HAD to stay and order something else.

Plus, the music selection was really good.

It's definitely a small location. No real room for mingling. But, I'm pretty sure I'll be back.

I love this place without really being able to explain why... to me, it exudes a warm, homey, neighborhood-bar persona.

I've enjoyed many a good drink and conversation in their well-worn booths, crowded into the red vinyl booths, markers of a well-loved spot. Their extensive, consistently updated beer menu has something for everyone (even myself - a non-beer lover). A neighborhood favorite of mine.

I ended up discovering (and then playing) Tuesday Night Trivia here quite by accident. Walked in here with a couple of friends quite randomly one Tuesday night and the waitress asked if we would mind taking the one remaining table by the door. "You'll have to share it with the trivia guy" she said, "but don't worry, he's very polite." And that's how we met Adam. He convinced us to play ("its free and you get money off your bill if you win!") so we did. We ended up finishing in 5th place, which is pretty respectable all things considered.

The service is good, as is the beer selection and their food is decent. I haven't had a chance to make it to their happy hour yet but their regular prices are pretty reasonable. Good ambiance, good crowd, overall just the type of bar I'd like to be a regular at.

I'm definitely planning to go back and take another shot at trivia. Looking for some teammates. Anybody interested? :)

I know it's probably a little weird for a chick to wander into a bar alone with a book, but that's what I did the other evening. I was waiting for my boyfriend, had a book, and wanted a beer. I've been to this joint a number of times and love it for the most part. Great selection of beer. Generally really tasty food. I am a fan.

My only small complaint was that I didn't feel super welcomed when I showed up. I might be overly-sensitive. That's a distinct possibility. But the bartenders (all female that night) basically ignored me until I flashed cash. Ah well. I got my beer.

I don't find myself bar hopping in the Upper West Side too often, but luckily enough I stumbled upon Amsterdam Tavern (with the help of Yelp, of course). Turned out to be a bar with a solid draft selection, plenty of seating, good crowd, and fine service.

The place was absolutely jumping on a Friday night. We managed to find a couple of seats at an already pretty full table - luckily the other patrons were very chill and didn't mind us encroaching (5 yard penalty!). At the previous spot my friend had raved about about a Sierra Nevada brew, Celebration Ale, that reminded her of Christmas (and I raved about the oh-so-amazing Shiner Cheer) and it turned out that Amsterdam happened to have it on tap. What a pleasant surprise on a chilly January night!

Food looked/smelled great, but we had just gotten done scarfing chicken & waffles down at Amy Ruth's and were far from hungry. I'd definitely be back for their bottomless brunch though.

Once again, add this place to the list of places I didn't take advantage of when I actually lived in Manhattan Valley...

At 2 a.m., there is a comfortable amount of patronage. I don't want to go into a packed bar, but I don't want to go anywhere that seems a little TOO empty.

The beer list was plentiful, with plenty of craft beers on draught or in bottles. My one disappointment was that there was only one kind of hard cider! However, it was Kopparberg Pear, and it was merely $5 (...I've seriously and regrettably paid $9 for it at other establishments...), but no Original Sin, Woodpecker, or another tradition apple hard cider? Curious.

Food was available, but I did not partake. Lots of flat-screen TVs showed the kind of awesome and bizarre television that lends itself to 2 a.m. show times. Nice vibe. Nice ambiance. Chill. On my own, I don't think I'd come here electively, but I'd certainly go back if a friend said, "Hey. Let's go HERE!" whilst puttering around that 'hood.

I'd rather go there then 1020 Bar, that's for sure...

Come here on Tuesday night for Trivia night it you want me to whoop your ass* at trivia while I drink a ridiculous amount of beer and berate you.

Come here on a Sunday afternoon after your teachers mind-fuc you (not funny, useful, or cool) for 10 hours** while I drink a ridiculous amount of beer and berate you.

Come here any weekday night for the $4 selection of beers which covers an entire sheet of paper, front and back. This leads to -- you guessed it -- too many beers and being berated by me.

The food is standard pub fare and while it won't make you wanna slap yo' mama, it will go well with the ridiculous amounts of beer I drink and the berating you get from me.

Who wants to go?

* By whoop your ass, I mean I will get 3rd place and a $10 bar tab because there was a section on reality TV and no one watches more reality TV than me.

My friend and I came here spontaneously around 8pm on a Saturday night. The bar was definitely full but not too full. We easily got seats at the bar and had two screens to watch the Barcelona vs. Madrid soccer game.

Pretty decent draft list, though the first three options my friend chose were all out at the time.

Definitely a sports bar, but it was clean, and the bartenders were nice and attentive. I'll be back!

Beer List - 4.5 stars
Food quality 3.5 stars
Accuracy of their website: 0 stars

I like this place, they have great fries, good burgers and a good tap list, and most are only $6. BUT i have to say, CHANGE the damn menu on the website and get rid of the specials you claim to have, since you don't offer them. Sort of annoying.

Anyway, the wait staff and bartenders are friendly, though they are a bit annoying about growler fill ups. Don't advertise them on the menu if you are going to complain about it. Also, don't over charge me for them.

Came in here on a Friday night with my girlfriend looking for a casual meal, after having read some good reviews on Yelp (yay! it works!).

We shared a lobster mac & cheese appetizer...OMG what a cheese-erific start! granted, if you put lobster, macaroni and cheese together, it's prettyyyy hard to fuck up, but it was awesome. The only other time I'd had lobster mac & cheese was at Poco on the LES (that review's on my to do list)...and that was HEAVENLY. A106's isn't as good, but is still really good.

Girlfriend had the burger with gruyere cheese and mushroom...AMAZING and perfectly cooked. Waitress accidentally brought regular fries when she had ordered sweet potato fries. When my GF asked, she brought us an extra basket of fries, so that was very cool. Unfortunately, both sets of fries were kinda bland :(

I had the grilled chicken salad, which was good but...uh...too healthy I guess? I wanted something healthy after the LM&C, but jeez louise. Very very very, almost non-existent dressing, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. For $12, eh I'll make my own.

Awesome selection of beers though! I didn't really like mine, but that's a matter of the beer's taste, not A106's. If I'm in the neighborhood, I'm definitely going back for an appetizer (definitely mac & cheese again or hummus) and a weird beer you don't normally drink....oh and maybe take home a "growler", a $13 to-go half-gallon of beer...good idea!!

Oh, and it has a buttload of TV's. You can't possibly escape sports if you come here.

Good place IF:
1. you're looking for a casual spot with good food and a good beer
2. you live in the neighborhood...nothing to travel more than 20 minutes for or write home about

A proper "beer" bar ... had a selection over over a couple dozen.
It's no Peculier, but it also doesn't smell like sewage.

Very reasonable prices, even though we missed a happy hour which they do from apparently 4-6 M-F ... can you say $2 Guinness?!

Tasty menu, we just had some small bites.

A GORGEOUS tin ceiling and very nice tables in general, all of them topped in polished granite.

Friendly service (cute waitress).
A few quality TVs if you're looking to catch a game/etc.

Just an all-around stand-out place in the area.
I don't make it up that way often, but I'd go here again without hesitation.

Hell yeah Amsterdam 106! The first bar I visited in New York this past trip and my experience was awesome. Walter, the manager, was our server and he did a great job of recommending food and beer to my friend and I. He also made us feel very welcome and even comped a round of drinks! (I hope it wasn't a mistake on his part, but I don't think it was!)

I ordered two beers- Atwater's Java Vanilla Porter and Goose Island's 312, neither of which I can find on tap in Los Angeles! I was impressed with the selection; since I'm from California and distribution of our beers to NYC is limited, it was interesting to find Green Flash on tap in NYC. I also appreciated that they served more than just Smuttynose, SlyFox, or Magic Hat #9. These seem to be staples on the taps in NYC, and he offered way more. I was also impressed with the Dogfishhead selection, and that Walter let us know about a Harpoon event coming up. Amsterdam 106 is definitely a bar that gets frequent, rotating, and sometimes rare taps. If I lived in the area, I think this would be one of my main spots (my Library Alehouse equivalent of Manhattan!)

Also, per recommendation of a VERY enthusiastic guest sharing a table with us, I had the BEST TUNA MELT EVAH (this is really the name) with the "Mottz" aka mozzarella. It was actually really good, and although not the best ever, it was pretty damn close. I'd come back just to try more items on the menu.

However, on a Friday night of course, seats are hard to find but they do come up if you camp out for a bit. Cheers to Amsterdam 106; you've made my short list of great craft beer bars in NYC!

Totally adequate and nothing more. This bar probably has four yelp stars because it is decently shiny and clean and carries more variety of beer than Bud, Miller, and Coors. Even though the beer selection is a bit expanded, it isn't anything that impressive or interesting. If you envision your typical bar with typical atmosphere, that's what you're going to get in 106. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's nice that it's near where I live, but I wouldn't give a place like this a second thought if it were downtown.

It's a small bar with some good beers. I don't live in this area and I probably won't come back... but IF I did live here, this would probably be a place I'd go to drink after work.

I was here for Craft Beer Week, and got to taste the wheat beer and maple ale. The maple ale was pretty good - it had a smooth syrupy finish (maple, duh). We were at a table and the waitress was kind of a you-know-what and completely ignored us. However, a guy that seemed to be a manager of sorts came up and asked if we were still waiting for our beers. When I told him we were still waiting to order, he jumped and quickly got our beers, which was cool. Then he mentioned another beer he thought I might be interested in and said he'd give us a taste of it. He walked away. And never got us our beer tastes. Oh well.

Maybe I was just in a good mood that night because I think it's still a decent place to have a few drinks. I also appreciate the glass of blow-pops they offer at the bar.

If you live in New York, you have done some serious people watching/judging in your life. My trip to 106 was the scene for one of the most hilarious people watching and subsequent judgings that I have had in a New York bar. Let's just say that if you have underwear that say "CLASS" in big letters across your ass, you should purchase jeans that are high enough in the back that they cover said undergarments when seated. And if you need to adjust yourself so that your "CLASS" is no longer broadcasted, you should pull your jeans up as opposed to pulling your underwear down. Crack kills. :)

That said, Amsterdam 106 seemed to be a perfectly nice bar/restaurant and is always busy when I walk by. They have a respectable beer selection that rotates weekly and a decent menu. To be honest, I don't remember what I had to eat, besides the fact that it was a burger and it was tasty. The best part about this place is the growlers: for a reasonable price you can have a half gallon of the beer of your choice to bring home with you!! can it get better than that? Nope!

----------------------
Update 8/23

We went here again for lunch and beer. The food is still yummy, the beer selection is still impressive, but the service is pretty lousy.

Only one word is necessary here:

GROWLERS!!!

For those unversed in what is best about beer brewing, let me educate you. Imagine a half gallon glass container that you bring to your friendly neighborhood bar or brewery (in my case, Amsterdam 106) that is then filled with one of many brews on a list. Air sealed and sitting in your fridge until you decide to partake.

I can't comment on anything else since we literally walked in and walked out, but I was happy with the results. The bartender seemed a little annoyed for really no reason, but I'm okay considering the growler itself is $5 (one-time fee since you bring your growler back) and to fill it up with any of their decent ales is $13. I also noticed that if you're into Bud Light, it's a grand total of $9. Some of the more expensive ones ran you $22. Not bad for a half gallon, which is roughly 4-5 pints. I'll definitely be back and maybe I'll actually sit down in here!

I really like this place. Not all the time, mind you, because some days it's just so crowded that you can't even get close to the bar to order. But on a Wednesday night the crowd is under control and you can even get a seat if you stay away from the dinner rush.

The kitchen is surprisingly good. I've ordered mostly sandwiches, but the guy next to me the last time in there had something called shastuka (sp?) that looked amazing. I'm getting that next time. I don't know who Mary Ryan is, but the sandwich named after her is a thick slab of perfectly cooked (rare for me) tuna on grainy bread with lettuce, tomato, avocado, wasabi mayo, etc. The po boy is really tasty as well, and the veggie burger is huge and tastes like home made.

They have a lot of brews available, but the house beer that's made by a local brewery is really good and incredibly cheap.

And the staff is super friendly. It's a great place to unwind after a long day.

I really like Amsterdam 106. In its previous life, it was a dive bar that looked sketchy to even a bar rat like myself.

But I like the new and improved 106 a lot. The selection of beer is outstanding - very varied with brands and styles I've never heard of yet alone tasted (I had a stout with hints of Mayan chocolate my last time there).

Service is prompt and friendly - sometimes they give out free blow pops or starburst. Can't go wrong there. In terms of food, I've had the burger, which was nothing special but definitely good enough.
