As a disclaimer, I've been to this place twice and the first time was a grand ol' time. I think because it was a Sunday, which is their busiest day of the week because people go after church across the street, they had their best staff come in and everything went perfectly; food was great and server was really attentive. The second time, however, was one of the worst experiences in service I've ever had. It was a Saturday, we made a reservation but still had to wait 20 mins for a table even though the place was pretty empty.

They sat us in the party room upstairs and then we waited for THIRTY (30) MINUTES for someone to take our order. All of us had forgone eating lunch to come here and now we've been hungry for nearly an hour. There was another party that went upstairs with us and they had gotten their food before we even placed our order. The bus boy ended up taking our order, even though the waiter had been attending to every other table in the place.

And then to top it off, there was a type of finger sandwich that smelled like it was rotten. Maybe that's was the way it's supposed to be and I just didn't like it, because I didn't get sick or anything after I took a bite and realized what I'd eaten. All in all, I think your best bet would be to go on a Sunday because it was amazing the one time and I want people to enjoy it!

I went to Ana Beall's for a baby shower this past weekend. I was so pumped because who doesn't love a good baby shower and a good cup of tea, right? WRONG! We rented out the upstairs room which had one section of the room very messy and cluttered. They seemed to be short on servers and staff so that plus a group of about 24 really wasn't the best combo. The tea was delicious and so were the scones. They had clotted cream and jams which really made the scones that much more tasty. They gave out finger sandwhiches which were mediocre. There was one really good tasting sandwhich that essentially tasted like a BLT that went through a blender then placed on a mini piece of bread. My favorite part was the orange juice they supplied with the champagne we brought to make mimosas.

Ana Beall's is a great place for brunch/lunch. They have a large arrangement of teas and their food average. Small selection on food may think about expanding selection  a little more. They were short on servers but they let us know that right away. They only problem was the server was no where to be found after she serverd our food. This is a great place to go as a mother daughter experience.

If you've read some of the other reviews here, as always you should throw out the lowest and the highest marks and the reality is somewhere in the middle. The service is not the best, far from horrible but not the best.  The place isn't large enough for you to get lost in the shuffle.  As for the food, the tea sandwiches are I imagine just what they're supposed to be, very little filling between 2 pieces of bread.  It's not supposed to be a "meal".  The scones were not one of those dense heavy scones, but much lighter and definitely not greasy. Will I go back, probably not just because I think "high tea" is somewhat silly, but it doesn't make this a bad place.

The food is 5 stars, the service is awful. I go here a lot, but not recently because I find that I just need to have a couple of extra hours to burn to eat here. The service is so slow that its almost maddening. If you can find the time to go, the scones are to die for...actually most everything is.

Went here with a large party over the weekend.  From the reviews, I must say I was more than skeptical, but the food was very good.  My wife had been here multiple times in the past, and each time said the experience was enjoyable.  I had pacific salmon hash, which had many large size pieces of salmon mixed in with the peppers, onions, potatoes, and covered with two eggs.  My wife had the french toast, which was a very large portion, and it was delicious.  Another member of our party had the crab cake with spinach, eggs, toast, and old bay hollandaise, and that was excellent.  The teas were all very good, I had the peony white needle, which was quite nice.  The service was a little slow, but we were not in a hurry, so we did not feel rushed.  I would absolutely go back to this place again.

Food could have been warmer, and nothing was so memorable..

I'm looking for a tea house I fall in love with.. *sigh*

I would rate Ana Beall's 0 stars if I could.  My friends and I made reservations for a weekday afternoon (3:45pm), after reading on their website (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.anabeallstearoom.com%2Fvisit_us.htm&s=ee263df46928dfb848f8805960d159779b0103f2eb68a94c136423deb219f5dd" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.anabeallstear…</a>) that they close at 5pm.  After coordinating with our extremely busy schedules, my friends and I finally decided to get together on this day to discuss potential venues for a bridal shower. We were hoping to enjoy afternoon tea at Ana Beall's to potentially host our upcoming event here.  A little over an hour before our reservation, which we were already on our way to, I received a call stating that our reservation would have to be cancelled due to slow business earlier in the day.  According to the hostess on the phone, they "only had 3 people come in" in the morning and couldn't afford to stay open until 3:45pm.  Not our fault that business was slow.  Our reservations were made and it was their responsibility to accommodate us, which they did NOT.  The hostess apologized and asked if it would be possible for us to reschedule for tomorrow, but unfortunately this was the only day in the entire month that we were all available.  Anyway, what would've been the difference between serving us tomorrow as opposed to today?  Huge disappointment. Unprofessional. Will not return-- EVER.

Had a nice time, but I've had much better elsewhere. Came here for brunch for a friend's birthday. There were 3 of us and we each ordered our own sandwich tower with sweets. The tea was OK. The sandwiches were fine, nothing spectacular. However, the dessert selection was rather boring. They could've opted for French macaroons which come in many different flavors and taste great with tea. Maybe I'm spoiled but this place didn't cut it in my book.

As tea houses go, there is nothing special about this one. Service is absolutely horrendous and the ambience looks just like your average coffee shop. Scones were good but our waitress didnt even know which sandwiches were wich when we ordered the high tea. I probably will not go back.

I wish I could review the Afternoon Tea here, but I was not able to enjoy it. I also purchased the Groupon and attempted to use it 3 times. The first two times they were closed, despite the fact that their hours clearly said they should be open. The second time I stopped in, I asked to be seated and the man said the kitchen was closed. When I asked why, since they were supposed to be open for another 1 and a half, he simply said they were closing early. I just tried again today, only to find that they were completely booked. I agree with the other reviewer that it is very poorly run. I will be calling this afternoon and sincerely hope the situation will be rectified.

What a disappointment.  I also had the groupon .... and it was still a disappointment.  I can say that the tea was good, and we also liked the scones, and wished we had stopped there.  But the sandwiches were on basic bread (somewhat stale) and had minimal filling (egg salad, hummus, goat cheese/cucumber and curry chicken salad).  The desserts were truly embarrassing and as a previous poster mentioned, looked like they just cut small cookies in half.  Service also left a lot to be desired.  Our waiter didn't even ask about refilling our tea pots/iced tea glass until we had asked for the check.  The regular afternoon tea is $18.95 and that's about $10-12 too much.

Thank goodness we had a "Groupon" for high tea!  We expected a more welcoming decor, more warmth & less noise.  The wait staff would just throw soiled dishes into a pan, with no regard for the patrons who were having tea.  The teas were wonderful, the black bean soup was just okay & the tea "sandwiches," prepared w/very stale bread & very scant filling were awful.  The scones were decent, as was the jam, but the desserts were shameful.  Our service was poor & that is being kind.  The bus person asked if I wanted the table cleared & I told him that we were waiting for tea, so he ran downstairs & the hostess who was downstairs brought our tea to us on the 2nd floor.
I do not understand how others have written glowing reviews for Ana Beall's.  I was looking for a location to host aqn event, but have eliminated this place from the possibilities.
My last comment has to do with providing a more inviting space:  some plants to cover up the awful mess in a neighbor's backyard & a parking lot, a few "starving artists' paintings," some live flowers.  Additionally, the service needs to be much more efficient.  We waited a long time to be disappointed.

The most horrible dining experience I've ever had. I am a pastry chef and love desserts. This place had desserts so bad I had to spit them out. Stop and shop can do better. They were out of the scones of the day and served us left over scones that they 'found'. They didn't have the teas we ordered and we waited 20 minutes before a waiter even came to our table. There were no waiters to be found in the room! The food was the most horrible I've had. The scones tasted like puff pastry, greasy with butter. The tea sandwiches were dry bread with a thin, almost invisible line of store bought spread. Hummus on bread is NOT considered a tea sandwich people! The place was very unsanitary, a bowl of open sugar cubes sitting out on a table all day as people breathe and sneeze into it! Yes I saw someone on another table sneeze into it! It was disgusting. Not a traditional afternoon tea experience at all, especially when half the staff is moody and sloppy looking. I don't understand how open table can give them an award.. Have they seen and tasted the place? Save yourself the disappointment and don't even bother to go into this shady looking place, which is also right next to a house with crime scene tape all over it!

Brought my aging mom for "High Tea for the heartier appetite" which included scones, soup, tea sandwiches, desserts.  We weren't greeted nicely so didn't have a good feeling at all by the young staff.  After being ignored for 10 minutes, we ordered, received tea and cup of soup. I asked for honey which was brought to me in a small metal creamer which had a ring of dried milk inside! T he scone and tiny sandwiches arrived and you needed a microscope to see what was inside of the little triangular sandwiches which had all crusts removed. Tiny cookies were cut in half. Definitely not for the "heartier appetite" as advertised. Never again. I almost brought my dad and I am glad I did not - he'd have freaked. The tea cup and saucers are ugly too!  Why not have cute little English tea sets in a "tea room"? There was food on the chair and floor and the cubes of sugar are just sitting in the open.  The place gave me the creeps and had a dirty appearance with young kids running it.  I can't imagine owning a business and running it that way. Also, there were several open tables (we were the only ones downstairs) yet two women walked in and they wouldn't seat them.  They were told they had to wait 2 hours!  HUH?  STAY AWAY!

The fact that I consider the food here adequate but still only give it one star shows how horrendously the place is run and how terrible the service was. It was the most disappointing tea experience I've ever had, hands down.

I ordered a fruit plate and the fruit plate never arrived. After waiting twenty minutes for a fruit plate, a waiter came by, apologized and said that the watermelon for said fruit plate didn't look good and someone was going to go out and get a new one. This never happened, and thankfully the waiter remembered to take it off the bill.

That was one of the few things the waiter did remember. Things he forgot included - refilling our water, refilling our teapots, asking us if we needed anything, giving us the bill, taking the bill from us.

It was a two hour experience, and not one of those delightful, relaxing two hour tea experiences. It was simply a two hour experience born of horrendous service and poor kitchen management.

I strongly encourage you all to go elsewhere.

Cute ambiance and delicious food but the service was so slow, disorganized, and forgetful, I would not come back here.

Went there in search of classy afternoon with a friend. Food wise? Wasn't bad at all. You really can't mess up tea(well the only person you can blame is yourself ya know?) The soup was more like a puree but it was tasty none the less. The scones were amazing! The tea sandwiches? eh I hate egg salad..or anything salad-y so i'm going to be biased. The desserts were nice..lemon squares...yum.

The only downside of my experience was the wait staff. Our waiter was missing in action half the time. Toward the end of the meal I felt like I should of put a homing device on him just to get the check. He was nice though..well nice for a guy with knuckle tattoos.

But check it out..decent time overall.

A lovely place for brunch or just to have a cup of tea with friends!  My SILs and I had a great afternoon at Anna Beall's.  We ordered couple of their healthy sandwiches and salad and they were delicious!

    Great service & atmosphere!

We went here for breakfast and had some delicious crepes. A lot of sugar for one sitting. Eggs also were very well. It only took 20 minutes for our food to arrive. Really nice atmosphere, really different type of food that you usually see.

Found this place through a Groupon offer for high tea.  We were in the upstairs portion of the tea house - nice ambiance and a cute place to sit and chat with girlfriends.  The selection of teas was good, and I like that high tea came with scones, assortment of small sandwiches and some desserts, as well as soup or salad.  I would not say that the food was exceptional, I would say that it was all very enjoyable. The staff was super friendly and came to ask us multiple times how things were.  I would go again and might even bring the kids next time.

I went here because I purchased a Groupon for "High Tea for 2 - $31 value" and have been looking for a good tea house in NJ.
When my husband, mother & father in-law and I got there I was told that I can use my groupon but that I would only receive half the sandwiches since the "High Tea" was 22/person and the groupon was more like $15.50/person. OK... then the groupon isnt for "High Tea" as described in the menu, it's for less than High Tea -maybe a "medium" tea or "lesser" tea. When I tried explaining this to the server, he kept arguing with me... Dont get me wrong, I'm not a jerk and will happily have whatever you offer, but dont misrepresent yourselves - after all, I did purchase this Groupon based on what the menu said, and when you remove half the sandwiches - you are no longer offering what you've listed on your menu as "high tea"...right? We compromised on using the value of the Groupon towards the regular sized High Tea, but he never did acknowledge my point (which I felt was valid).
ANYWAY - I was grossed out by all the little sugar bits that were in the sugar bowl. This should be filled with CUBES, not nasty old little balls that have been there forever.
There was no honey, why? I love honey with my tea, it's a common sweetener for tea - shouldnt a Tea House know this?
Sandwiches and desserts were mediocre. It took the waiter 20 minutes to bring more hot water for my tea.
There was no vegetarian soup option - which is ok, I guess - but I do get tired of always being offered the salad substitute, especially when the salad comes on a tea saucer (YES IT WAS THAT TINY),
I asked the waiter to make one of the trays a vegetarian - meaning "please substitute the chicken salad sandwich with egg salad, or cucumber" but he told me that my husband's and my order would come out on the same tray and to just avoid the chicken sandwiches.... Really? Avoid the chicken ones???  So that would mean that I just get less sandwiches (have you seen a tea sandwich? They're tiny!!!)?

to be fair, the scone was marvelous! I wish I only had the scone...

Not my cup of tea... After reading all the positive reviews about this place my Mother-in-Law and I expected great things. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement.

To start things off we had a difficult time parking close by, but that aside we were looking forward to our tea lunch. When we walked in on the first floor, we thought it was lacking some ambiance of a traditional teahouse. It seemed a little bland compared to others we have been to. Additionally the tables were just sort of strewn about and at least one needed to be cleaned off. There were no table cloths or any nice set up on the tables.

It took a while for our server to come take our order and bring us our tea. Even worse was that our lunch took at least 45 minutes to arrive for a simple plate of eggs and a chicken sandwich. The portions were small, and lacked any type of presentation. The blueberry muffin was also nothing to write home about, I've baked better myself. No one ever even came to ask us how our meal was or if we needed anything - a glass of water would've been nice.

The worst part of the experience was that when the table next to us was being cleaned up, I saw the server take the plate of jam & butter from the scone and saw him put it back in the fridge!!!! Talk about health violation. And the bathroom was filthy too, with a dirty towel (not disposable) just left about in there.

The place seemed to be run by a bunch of kids and it was not clear if anyone was in charge. The servers and kitchen staff were all wearing just jeans and t-shirts, there was no professional attire. We even overheard one say that they ran out of eggs, and sounded like cream too.

I honestly expect more from a tea house. There was no cute little tea cups or ambiance on the walls that would remind me of such a place. I think going out to tea with your girlfriends is a great experience but this is not somewhere I could see myself going with my friends to catch up at.

While I was in the area on business, my boyfriend came up to visit me since I would be missing the Easter holiday at home.  We were really looking for an old fashion Easter brunch but weren't likely to find that in the Linden area, so we ventured out to Cranford.  We definitely found that here!  What a quaint little restaurant!  We had a late brunch (1PM) after the rush from the surrounding churches had vanished.  I had the Salmon Hash and my boyfriend had some sort of chicken sandwich.  We split the apple flavored tea along with some orange juice.

The experience was a wonderful one with the exception of the inattentive service.  The waiters seem too young and there are not enough of them for the level of service needed to keep everyone happy in a place like this.  This restaurant would get 5 stars in my book if it didn't take us 15min to get our drinks and an additional 10min after having our plates taken away to get the check.

I had lunch here this week with my aunt and cousins.  The tea room is located in an old house near the downtown area of Westfield, and is quite charming.  They have an extensive tea menu, although I cannot vouch for it, as I had a diet Coke (I'm not a tea fan).  I also noticed a scones on the menu and wish I had the opportunity to sample one, but I was on a quick lunch break and just ate and ran.  I chose the caprese sandwich, which was roasted tomatoes, arugula, basil and fresh mozzarella with balsamic vinaigrette.  It came with a small side of mixed greens.  I thought it was tasty.  My aunt had a strawberry salad and liked it, and my cousins had steak salads, which they thought were just okay.

I think there are some good things on the menu here and would like to return to have a more complete experience.  I think I was rushed and couldn't appreciate it as I would have hoped, but it's definitely a cute place!

There is a lot of hype built around this restaurant/tea room. It's not horrible, but it's not the best either. My companions all enjoyed the scones, everything else was nothing special.

Our server was a kid (maybe late teens or early 20's), we think it was his first day at the job because he forgot to bring us silverware, napkins, and plates. We had to keep asking for items we needed.

It's a very small space so it can get crowded and noisy quickly.

Skip it and enjoy better choices at Rockin Joe's (also in Westfield and Cranford, NJ).

I don't like scones typically, until I tasted the one's at Ana Beall's; awesome.  Friendly staff, and very friendly owner.  I stop in for tea and scones for take-out when I really want a treat.  The brunch is very good, located in a quaint Victorian house, very much enjoyed without the high price.

Came back to Ana Beall's over the weekend with my Mother for brunch. The menu was enticing with a good selection of lunch and breakfast items. My mother had the omelet which, at a reasonable price, was according to her, very filling and generous. The dish came with a scone, she selected lemon poppy, complete with jelly, butter and clotted cream. I had the spinach golden vegetable salad, again a generous portion, and a plain scone. Consistent food, warm ambience and attentive service makes this tea house a winner in my opinion.

I picked Ana Beall's for my birthday brunch, since I love tea.  I wasn't disappointed -- the tea menu was extensive and the baked goods were to die for.  I also saw a group of little girls coming in for a birthday party, so it seems like the perfect place for birthdays, bridal/baby showers and Sunday brunches.  Of course, I'd go back any day of the week for the butter pecan scone with clotted cream and jam. Yum!

Great option in Westfield for Brunch...especially if you want to BYOB which i LOVE to do that way I can bring a good quailty champagne for mimosas.  I had the salmon hash which was great...i'd ask to leave out the potatoes next time, but it as nice, 2 poached eggs on top with a wonderful warm scone!!  hit the spot and good prices!!  ask to sit upstairs or near the window!

I've lived in Westfield since 2003 and never knew this place existed until I saw an ad recently in the Hometown Quarterly. So I decided to pay a visit for lunch. What a charming little restaurant and tea house!

They have a wide variety of teas, sandwiches, salads. Their scones are very good. Their "greens, egg and ham (aka bacon) salad" is delicious. After trying this place out, I brought one of my girlfriends here for lunch. Their sandwiches are tasty as well.

I've dined both upstairs and downstairs. The 2nd floor is nicer with better ambiance.

My only complaint is that we asked for some rainbow cookies for the kids and were brought what looked like one tiny rainbow cookie sliced into 3 pieces and charged $2. I could have eaten those "3" cookies in one bite- so TINY!

This is a wonderful addition to the area.  Their high tea is totally authentic and as good or better than places I've been to in London.   Everything is wonderfully fresh and I'm a particular fan of their scones. There is a nice selection of teas and they brew it properly, timing it for just the right flavor.   The staff is friendly and helpful and doesn't rush you.  They have a small room that is good for parties, and every time I've been there on a Saturday there's a shower or birthday going on.

Reservations are a must for Sunday mornings, it's almost accross the street from Holy Trinity church.  Most of the seating is on the second floor, so again reservations for the first floor are a good idea if you're with someone who has trouble with stairs.  Parking is on the street and can be hard to come by.

I took my mom to this place for the "High Tea" experience and we got EXACTLY what you would expect... let's start with their delicious, piping hot, moist, amazing... scones!  Mom had the coconut macadamia  nuts scone while I had the cranberry scone... serve with homemade honey butter, whipped cream and raspberry jam... can't go wrong either option and the honey butter is to die for!!!!  The finger sandwiches were delicate enough to stay within the theme but surprisingly refreshing and filling.  Their various desserts were not overly sweet... nice blend of sweetness and the tartness of various citrus flavor cakes/cookies... Large selection of teas... atmosphere is welcoming and not overboard "Laura Ashley"  Wait staff are friendly and informative.  Great place to relax, unwind and catch up with friends/family!
