Worst service possible, a disgrace to the restaurant business. My first and last visit. We came here the Sunday after hurricane Sandy, if you want to be treated poorly and pay for it to boot, this is the place go. I came with my two kids, my daughter comes with her friends often so I thought why not give it a try. The hostess was very pleasant, all smiles but had a split personality with a serious attitude problem when I tried to address an issue with our waiter. The hostess had this to say "we had a hurricane you know, we're doing you a favor here. I have not had heat, electric". Â
When the waiter came to take our order what my daughter wanted was not available. The waiter failed to mention when we were seated that they were out of many things on the menu, which is understandable with the hurricane. So I said take my order and give us a few more minutes for my kids. Waiter comes back takes my son's order, waiter then tells us no we're out of that as well, meanwhile my food comes. Â Well, why didn't he just say something the FIRST time we order?? His reply "you know we had a hurricane we're out of a lot of things" he walks away to give us more time. He's obviously stretched thin waiting tables. Hostess walks by I tried to ask her " what are they out of", her reply"ask your waiter". walks away. Â Waiter comes by again and is impatient, kids don't know what to order now. Â I said to him why didn't you say something before of even generally what is no longer available. Â His reply" why are you talking to me like that, I just work here, we had a hurricane you know, you have a problem talk to the person in charge" then walks away. His attitude was not necessary. I walk back to the hostess, who is the first person I see to complain about the waiter and rather than direct me to some who can help me took it as a personal offense before I could even get my words out. We're talking some serious attitude issues here, she put her hands up "stop no" walked away started rambling about the hurricane again. How many times do I need to be reminded that there was a hurricane?
To their credit, a young man (in charge?) came to our table to help rectify things. Â Asking "how can I help, what can I do?, who was the waiter" Sorry damage was done but I did appreciate the attempt. Â I just asked for my bill and wanted to leave. On my way out to pay the bill I wanted to try to explain to the hostess that I didn't have a problem with her I was just trying to let someone know I had a problem. She went nuts again, one would think I was going after her with heavy artillery.
I have through the years referred many of my clients to the diner, now I realize what poor judgement it was. I can only hope their experience wasn't as unpleasant as mine was. It was to be a pleasant day out with the kids, we were all in a good mood, instead I left with two kids in tears. Â As for the food, they charged $4 more for the corn beef hash, they must have been out of that too because you had to look for it to know you had it.
Overpriced and horrible service. Â The food is pretty good though. Â Although I am not sure why they charge extra for curly fries, etc. Â Â There are too many diners around to waste your time on one that can't keep their orders straight and don't bring you a soda for ten minutes. Â I have had similar experiences here on several visits.
Review Source:Whenever we visit N.J. from Florida, This is one of our first stops. Terrific food, friendly service, clean and comfortable. The soups are outstanding, and in cold weather, if you happen to be there on a day they make beef stew, order it and find out what beef stew is supposed to taste like. In really cold weather, with a little snow mixed in, when you open the door into a small vestibule, and the blast of hot air from an overhead heater hits you, along with the delicious smell of the food, you know you are in the right place. Incidentally, one of the owners, Â Angie, is a terrific hostess and welcomes us warmly, each time we arrive. We have always had a great meal here, with very nice service. Try the soups! Each one is excellent.
