Cinnamon roll = 4 stars.  Everything else = 3 stars.

Been here twice now and both times I ordered variations of the eggs benedict and tried someone else's benedict.  That means I've had the crab cake benedict, the salmon benedict and the steak benedict.  Three stars indeed.  The cinnamon rolls are gooey hot warmness that were great but beyond that I see no reason to return.

its hard to find a good comfort food, breakfast place in the city.  everything is trendy and small.  that's not what i think when i'm going to a breakfast joint.  i always go for their crab benedict.  homemade crab cakes, topped off with poached egg and their house hollandaise sauce.  delish!  its definitely enough for 2 meals.   i know its homemade crab cakes too because they had me wait for it once while they made a fresh batch.  well worth the wait!  it was nice that they gave me a heads up before i ordered and i had my sides to keep me occupied anyways.  with an egg dishes, you have your choice of 2 sides.  as one of your sides, you MUST get the cinnamon roll.  they give you 2 gigantic buns topped off with gooey icing.  the buns are fresh and fluffy... stuffed with cinnamon sugar in the middle.

I'm starting to think that ordering omelettes anywhere is just not that great of an idea because it always disappoints.

SO: don't order the omelettes here. Or anywhere, really.

On the upside, their biscuits + gravy (which came with really good sausage patties) was great and tasty. And, of course, the cinnamon rolls were the best cinnamon rolls ever.

(also, their thing of sugar looks a lot like a thing of salt. What I'm trying to say is, don't make the same mistake I did.)

I went to this location for the first time this weekend with a group of 4. We were seated fairly quickly considering it was noon on a Sunday. Our waitress wasn't particularly friendly, but she brought out our food quickly. She also didn't seem to notice or care that she spilled hot cinnamon bun icing all over my friend's coat. I had the Swedish pancakes- delicious. The hashbrowns are also very good, and of course the buns are to die for despite being messy. One of my friends ordered the rice porridge, and found a hair in it. I would still be back here.

    What's not to like?

I got the Swedish Breakfast Sampler.  It was not until this day that I realized all of my breakfasts had been missing potato sausage, Swedish meatballs and gravy, and Swedish pancakes.  My lovely wife, being of this heritage, had been holding back all of the good stuff for the entirety of our relationship.

But that's okay, I got the Swedish Coffee, which was a delightful blend of cream, coffee and spices.  And I just flat-out refused to share in a reasonable fashion.  While we were there, a political meeting was going on in the back room, apparently some alderman owns the joint and hosts meetings there.

I don't really remember what anyone else got, and frankly it doesn't matter.

    Because I won.

    I love this place!!!

This is especially good for brunch on Saturday or Sunday mornings when you are hungover. During these days I pretty much want one of everything on the menu.

The best omelette here is the V-4. It has artichokes, asparagus, mushrooms, tomatoes and asiago cheese. Really refreshing and I love all of the different vegetables. And for the sides, I get fruit (to make myself seem healthy) and cinnamon rolls.

Now about the cinnamon rolls. I could go on and on about how great they are. They are crispy on the outside, hot on the inside. And the place loads the rolls with frosting, which is my favorite part. They also taste great as leftovers.

love this place for the friendly staff and just good food and vibe.  It always smells like fresh warm cinnamon buns and the bottomless coffee is great with any sugar cravings.

Good to come on your own or with a group of people.  Expect a wait on weekends.

I absolutely love this place. Was here last week with an old friend. Haven't been there in over a year and it still has the best and very fast service, great food, great atmosphere and very accessible by public transit now that I don't live in the neighborhood.

Cinnamon rolls are No. 1, obviously. But the rest of the breakfast menu isn't bad, either. I bring all of my out-of-town guests here to get a solid breakfast in before doing tourist-y stuff, and Ann Sather is always right on. Cinnamon rolls always make everyone's eyes roll back in their head with their heavenly deliciousness. Omelets are chock full of whatever toppings you request and done perfectly. Fruit is fresh and tasty. Other people have knocked the service, but mine have always been on top of their game, even on busy Sundays.

I think I would eat gruel from this place as long as it came with a side of cinnamon rolls.  Luckily, the food is definitely above gruel level, and it comes in gut-wrenchingly enormous proportions that one meal at Ann Sather's means that I'll probably be too full to eat for the rest of the day.

I also enjoy the grab-and-go cinnamon roll service, which is a major necessity in a pinch (the pinch being pretty much any occasion - friends visiting, small celebration, creepy woman in my face on the red line, etc).

I love the atmosphere, the service is good, and it's a nice hopping brunch place for a weekend morning.

Portions are huge! Service is friendly! Place is unpretentious and laidback! You know you'll get a decent hot meal here. The cinnamon buns were a fabulous starter, and I got the swedish dinner sampler for my main. I really liked the roasted duck, the sauerkraut and the swedish meatballs on my plate. The prices are also quite reasonable. I can totally see myself hopping in for another no frills meal!

Our original intent was to just stop in to get a cinnamon roll/sticky bun to go but everything looked really good so we decided to stick around. Hooked us in!

For a bit I was trying to decide that to get as they had a lot of offerings that sounded good and spying around at other's plates had my mouth watering. I was thinking we might split the Southern Decadence ($9.95) that had Poached Eggs Over Sausage Patties & Hot Bisquits Topped with Country Sausage Gravy. It sounded so rich and good. I had to pass only because of the rest of the indulging I had been doing all weekend prior, plus we were going to walk a few miles afterwards so we didn't want to be weighed down. We ordered the Denver Omelet ($8.75) with sides of with fruit and hash browns. Standard omelet but it delivered.

We did get a sticky bun to split later and it was incredible. I highly suggest getting one.

I took a friend in town there for lunch this morning.  I have been at the one in Andersonville before.  Everything was great.  I had the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict.  The egg was beautifully cooked.  Salmon was great.  Hollandaise sauce wasn't the best I have had, but it was almost unnecessary with how good everything else was.  The cinnamon rolls were as good as I remember.  Server was great.  Attentive without being annoying.  Top 5 breakfasts in Chicago.

Went here with two friends while visiting Chi Town, went here for lunch, tried the crab cake sandwhich, amazing. The food was so quick, waitress was friendly.

Downside, I felt like you were on top of one another, but I understand Chicago is a big crowded city so it happens.

Prices were good, lots of choices for lunch, easy to split the bill. Sticky buns were amazing! You get two sides and one sticky bun side means you get two! Cool! Enojyed it a lot!

Ann Sather is a good diner.

But not a great one, which I was expecting after Ted Allen's endorsement over their cinnamon buns.  Unfortunately, I can't tell the difference between these and the store bought ones.  They are no Cinnabons' half doughy deliciousness.  They're a little over baked with crunchy outsides.

While I was a bit let down by their cinnamon roll, they do pack in the amount of food for the price.  You get an entire entree, a cinnamon roll, and a side item.  They are very generous with their portions.

Obviously the cinnamon rolls are amazing. You should go just for those. I used to avoid going here because of their omelets. I judge breakfast places on their omelets, and Ann Sather  just didn't make the mark. I went back recently because a friend wanted cinnamon rolls, and they must have done an omelet makeover because I ordered the Mediterranean omelet and it was awesome. It was stuffed with yummy spinach, sun dried tomatoes, and feta. I also like how there are multiple healthy side options, like sliced tomatoes and fruit, so you aren't stuck with greasy hash browns.

Bonus: It's BYOB and they'll bring you fixins for bloodies or mimosas. nom nom

It's a good thing my man is about to become a dentist... because YUM YUM sugary cinnamon bun YUM!

The rest of the menu is really quite mediocre. There are definitely better places for omelettes, hash, benedicts, crepes etc. But it is quite amazing that with your meal, you get a choice of 2 sides, and 1 side of cinnamon rolls = 2 cinnamon rolls... Which means you could get 4 cinnamon rolls as your SIDES! Score!

Brunch was busy, and there was a small wait, but once you've got a tender, warm cinnamon bun in your mouth, your world will be a better place.

Ahh Ann Sather's.  This place is extremely popular and I don't mean to poo poo on all of the positive reviews, because overall this is a very nice breakfast/brunch spot.  The cinnamon rolls are extraordinary and the portions are worthy of several meals (I generally like to split a meal when going here).  The prices are very reasonable too.

However, I went here about a week ago and thought I'd give the eggs benedict a try.  I must say I was extremely disappointed.  It was hardly eggs benedict at all.  There were pros and cons, so let me elaborate.  First, the muffin was stale but we had a very large party and it's possible that it had been sitting around for a while.  The muffins weren't soggy and that's a big deal.  The eggs were done fine and the ham was fine to - hard to mess up.  If that's all that was required then I would have gotten an egg McMuffin at McDonald's!  But as other eggs benedict enthusiasts are aware, the hollandaise is where it's at.  The hollandaise was barely edible!  There was no flavor of lemon.  It was heavy instead of light and whipped.  It was extremely peppery and salty.   I stopped eating it and tossed the leftovers.

I am giving Ann Sather's 2 stars simply because I KNOW they can do better.  I have high expectations for an otherwise great brunch spot.

As a Swede (born and raised), I always seek out the Swedish places to eat whenever I move somewhere new. I came here for breakfast once, and it's an okay diner with good coffee, free refills and somewhat greasy food. But I did in no way think it resembled anything Swedish apart from the fact that I guess we eat omelettes in Sweden. The choices on the menu are nothing especially Swedish and is something I'd expect to find (with variation) in other breakfast diners too.

The cinnamon buns are good, but way too sugary. I don't understand the obsession with the frosting on cinnamon buns in Chicago, IKEA does it too and there is way too much of it. It's a shame, because the actual buns are really moist and delicious. I had the salmon dill omelette and it was well made, a big portion and I was full when I left the place.

I would come back, but not for the "Swedish" food. It would be more for the free coffee refill (and we know that Swedes love that!) and the fact that it's a nice place to sit in. I wouldn't recommend it as a Swedish restaurant, though. If you want the authentic experience, try Tre Kronor. They even have the julbord (Swedish Christmas-themed smörgåsbord).

I haven't been to Ann Sather's premier restaurant on Belmont for years so I thought it was time to revisit this restaurant establishment.

Upon arrival at 2:15pm, I was greeted by the host and was seated at a table next to a window so I can watch the world go by.  The restaurant has a great ambience due to the brightness of the room.  The restaurant looked very clean.

As I'm reviewing the menu, the server came and checked in with me.  She took my drink order and came back with the soda shortly.  At that time, I placed the order of the Hot Turkey Open Face Sandwich.  She brought the cinnamon roll as part of the lunch.  Do I really need to say anything about their cinnamon roll?  As I'm enjoying the roll, my sandwich was delivered, please let me enjoy the roll.

The open face sandwich was huge.  The dressing, turkey were placed on a slice of Texas Toast.  The instant potatoes were nothing to remember about.   The server checked in with me.  That was the last that I saw of her.  Overall, the sandwich was pretty good.  No complaints.

After sitting there for a while, the server was MIA.  Finally, I went to the counter without a check and paid for my meal.  I understand that a server needs to do their side work; however, you must pay attention to your tables.

Overall.... Good food.  The service is questionable.  I would return again and give the restaurant another try.

    HOLY BREAKFAST!

Easily tied for the best breakfast I have ever had. The cinnamon roll french toast is absolutely out of this world fantastic.

The coffee was great, the atmosphere was cozy, and the service was wonderful. I'm really looking forward to going back!

We only had a 5 minute wait for a group of 5 on a holiday weekend warning, so I was willing to forgive the gunk on my spoon and just use my husbands. However, when I got to the bottom of my cup of coffee and saw a Splenda packet at the bottom of my cup, I was pretty appalled. Plus, the servers reaction of "oops, I won't charge you for that" seemed a little underwhelmed since it looks like the dishes are not being cleaned.

They get a star for being fast and the cinnamon buns and biscuits being good (not fantastic though).

I won't go back because, in all honesty, I spent the entire meal being grossed out about whether my dishes were clean or not. I can save a lot of money eating off dirty dishes at my own house, thankyouverymuch.

I've been eating here for 25 years now and I never leave dissatisfied. It's such a classic and Tom has done such a great job in preserving what has made this restaurant great for decades now, but at the same time endearing it to generation after generation of new Lakeview small-town boy "immigrants".  It's in its third location on the block now. The original, before my time, was in the old Army Surplus, now demolished for the new Belmont El stop. When I started in the late 80s, it was in an old funeral home. But the newest place has managed to maintain all the original charm; you hardly notice you're in a different building.

Of course, the cinnamon rolls are the old staple and as decadent as ever. Pay attention to your menu item to see if it comes with "sides". Make sure one of your sides are the cinnamon rolls. I used to live a block form here in the early 90s and people from work would always elect me to bring rolls for morning meetings. You could smell the warm, freshly baked cinnamon rolls the whole trip to the Loop on the El and people would look at me like they were going to attack me and steal the cinnamon rolls!

The rest of the menu is classic Chicago diner, with a few Swedish twists. You can't go wrong, really, with anything if you grew up eating hearty foods and are not afraid of classic American rural and immigrant food like cabbage soup, green beans, carrots, etc. The omelets never disappoint, especially the Mediterranean, nor do the fantastic pancakes or biscuits and sausage gravy.

I hope to keep going here another 25 years.

This is my second time trying out this restaurant.

The first time I had and okay meal. This time, things were disastrous.

The biggest strike was the fact that it took waiting ten minutes, and me having to ask for our server before we got any attention from our server. On top of that, he pretended as if nothing was wrong. I understand that it was busy, but we didn't get acknowledged. Instead, we got served by 3 different bus boys, each of whom had not communicated with the server at all.

Furthermore, my food was atrociously bad. I ordered the sampler lunch plate and everything was mushy and bland: the spaetzle, my duck, the sausage. Our cinnamon buns were also doughy.

I ate there yesterday, and am still feeling kind of sick thinking that I actually tried to eat my lunch.

The one plus was the Swedish coffee.

Been here a million times. The food is always solid.
The service is generally good. Sometimes, excellent! Alderman Tom Tunney is the owner and on a couple of occassions I have seen him apron and all seating people at tables, clearing plates, even on his hands and knees wiping up floor spills.

    Here are my personal faves
    ~Monte Cristo breakfast
~Southwestern omelete (something about the salsa is perfection)
~patty sausage is better than what I usually see at most places
    ~don't forget the sweet rolls

    Plus free parking
Expect to have a wait during peak breakfast/brunch periods

Nomnomnom Anne Sather. Deeelicious cinnamon rolls and I actually had a pretty great breakfast burrito here as well. The location on Belmont has a ton of seating and they're great at handling the inevitable crowds that gather on Sunday mornings. I went with a couple friends and didn't have to wait long at all.

One of the best aspects of Anne Sather is that you get your money's worth. This is not your typical $11 omelet with $4 hashbrowns brunch establishment. However, don't plan to do anything productive for the few hours afterwards...unless you can resist ordering their cinnamon rolls as a side, which I cannot. These cinnamon rolls alone will fill you up, so that plus your meal and the additional side (all reasonably priced) is a lot, a lot of food. Definitely a Chicago brunch staple, timeless and consistent.

Third time eating here, first time reviewing. Ann Sather is a Chicago institution and no wonder--their infamous cinnamon rolls are the best I've ever had. They serve 2 for $3 which is an awesome bang for your buck. They are literally the size of your face and the icing is warm, gooey and absolutely to die for. My husband also ordered the hashbrowns, scrambled eggs and bacon and said that it was all really good. The prices are great and you'll stay full for a long time afterward. The place can get pretty busy during the weekend brunch hours but thankfully they're pretty quick at turning over tables.

In a nutshell, order the cinnamon rolls. You won't be sorry.

Fair enough the place has this elegant atmosphere and it's pretty cozy but the food itself (which is hopefully the reason you came here) is just okay.

If you come for brunch be sure to come early and make a reservation, otherwise you might be waiting for a while...the servers are friendly and try to be super fast, which is a plus! And their hot chocolate is delicious!

They brag about their cinnamon rolls but in the end, they are no different from the kind you can bake at home, only that these ones are gigantic, so that I still would recommend them as a side, just don't expect any fireworks with 'em.

One thing that bothers me is how they make home fries instead of hash browns, maybe it's their Scandinavian way, but they really need to get this straight.

Their portions are big and you get two sides, so make the best of it...you can have a really decent brunch for sure, but it won't be the type of brunch that will blow your mind away, although you will be able to take leftovers home because they do give out lots of food :)

There was way too much hype about this place and with their cinnamon rolls. Their cinnamon rolls just tasted like any other.
A group of us came here because of the hype, but it didn't meet our expectations.
Also, the service was slow when we were there. I would understand if they were packed and busy. However, the restaurant was only half full.
Another con: they charge a sharing/splitting fee. I hate restaurants that do this. Why do you need to charge if I'm splitting my dish? All you do is give me a dish and you charge me for it? On top of that, they didn't let us know that there was a fee ahead of time! We found out when the bill came.

We ate other dishes like eggs benedict and french toast. Those were the dishes that saved the day.

Wow, this certainly is long overdue.  I've been going to Ann Sather for years, I can't believe I haven't posted this yet.  Let me start with two facts:  I am Swedish and I don't really like breakfast stuff. There I said it.  With that being said, I have two words: cinnamon rolls.

Even if you are more of a savory girl, these gooey, spiced rolls will seduce even the most jaded of palates.  I mean its hard to hate on something so delicious, usually hot out of the oven, drizzled with sugary sweet frosting.  The perfect balance of roll to drizzle ratio, and done the way my grandmother used to.

The Swedish pancakes here are as authentic as you would get in any cafe in Stockholm and the lingonberry jellies are the real deal.  Don't be shocked to find a slice of Scandinavia in the heart of Boystown.  If you knew Chicago history, you would know that this area was once home to a sweet little Swede enclave with the old Medusa's nightclub being a Swedish singing club in the 40's-60's.

On top of swift service and consistently fantastic breakfast they offer some unique options like strawberry orange juice and fortified coffee.  There is almost always a wait but its well worth it and this is one of the few places left in the area that offer parking for their guests.  And their menu is not limited to Swedish swagger.  You can get an omelet flying other flags, delicious meaty bacon, sausage, English muffins, scrambles and hash browns to die for.  There are healthy options too, including fresh fruit and oatmeal I think.  I never look at that side of the menu.

On another note, Ann Sather offers catering!  When I recently had to cater a brunch for 100 out of town folks, they made it super easy with 1 call.  They sell their cinnamon and pecan rolls by the dozen as well as mini muffins and even a very fairly priced continental breakfast, hot menu options and so on.  Their catering person, Ann, was extremely helpful and made sure I didn't over order and even better, my order was ready and waiting when I zoomed in to pick it up on a hectic Sunday morning.  I cannot recommend them enough for making a chaotic and crazy event so much smoother.

Ann Sather is the brunch equivalent of the missionary position- after your first time, it's not all that exciting, but it's solid and it's reliable, and if you live nearby, you'll probably wind up there every so often because it's so convenient.

If you know what to order, you're in good shape, but Ann Sather does have its fair share of underwhelming menu offerings. Here's my take on a few of the menu options:

-Cinnamon rolls: a must, coming here and not getting an order is practically sacrilegious
-Southern Decadence: Southern-style biscuits and gravy with sausage and poached eggs, I'm from Georgia and even I can say these are some darn tasty biscuits
-Biscuits and gravy with sausage: same deal as above minus the poached eggs
    -Turkey Club: solid go-to
    -French toast: also solid
    - Traditional eggs benedict: meh, I've had better
    -V4 omlette: skip it
    -Avocado delight wrap: also skip
-Hash browns: these should not be called hash browns, they're like the baked potato's bastard child. I always make the mistake of ordering them expecting delicious, crispy shredded goodness and wind up with chunks of mushy baked potato. False advertising.

Expect to wait to get a table and don't expect great service. It's cheap, quick and dirty.

Go for the cinnamon rolls, come back for the....cinnamon rolls

Everyone loves their cinnamon rolls (comes in 2 servings per order); personally I like eating a meal like the Swedish or the French Toast Fantasy and then asking them to pack the cinnamon roll to go at the end of your meal.

Most entrees are just under $10, great place to go for breakfast on any given day. Expect it to be busy during Saturday/Sunday brunch, I've never had a wait time over 20 minutes though, so can't complain.

I've been coming to this Ann Sather for awhile, so I was really confused when I went here today and it was so disappointing.

Of course, the cinnamon rolls were *Amazing* but apart from that, everything was a bit disappointing.

First--I felt bad for our waitress, I felt like she had every table in the place (even though there was another waitress?) and she was running around like crazy. It took forever until we were able to put our orders in. I'm not blaming her, and it was a Tuesday afternoon, so it wasn't super busy, but it was still crazy how slow everything was. After we ordered, the food took forever.

In my observation--all of the tables our waitress had seemed to have put their orders in at the same time, which meant that all of our food came out at the same time--it looked a little chaotic--I thought restaurants usually tried to stagger tables so that this doesn't happen, but they didn't seem to do this today at Ann Sather.

After the food finally came out (which was a very long time compared to other times I've been here), it was really disappointing--two of us ordered eggs benedict dishes and our eggs were overcooked. The yolks were hard! But weirdly, there was some runny yolk on my plate--I really was confused about where it came from. The food was just okay--I had the Southern Decadence--the gravy was ok, but not the best. The sausage was good though.

I also feel bad since I don't feel like the issues were our waitress's fault--it just seemed like they didn't know how to staff their dining area. It was odd. She was friendly and refilled our coffees constantly, but when we ordered an extra drink, it never came...I don't know, it was odd.

Overall--it's a decent spot and I'll probably stop in again, but I'm happy to know that there are many other good breakfast places in the neighborhood.

Lucky find for a great breakfast!

My boyfriend and I were staying in boystown for the NGFFL tournament & Chicago's pride weekend.  We had done our research on hotels and restaurants and the bar scene but were lacking in the breakfast department..  Little did we know what was in store...

Directly across the street from our hotel, the Best Western, is Ann Sathers.  We arrived around 10:00am and got seated right away.  The Swedish restaurant is very simple, yet the hustle and bustle sets the tone that something quite great is going on in here.  We explained to our waiter that this was our first time visiting; he anxiously filled us in on the details.

The menu is extensive and offers all of the basics, however skip all of that and go directly to the specials!  I ordered the french toast fantasy (They claim that this is "the dish" recommended by Rachael Ray, heck we all know that chick knows food!) with a side of sausage.  The first course served was the delicious and warm cinnamon rolls, they were amazing!  It turns out that the rolls were served to us by mistake, but man what a a mistake!!  Next came the french toast and it was perfect.  The Marscarpone-filled bread, battered, grilled and topped with granola and fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries was very sweet yet very satisfying.  I suggest getting the side of sausage with the fantasy, the salty flavor of the links breaks up the sweetness of the toast perfectly.

The prices are reasonable, the service was above average, the food is delicious!  Definitely seek and find an Ann Sathers when your in Chi town!!

After over a year of living in Chicago, I still haven't tried Ann Sather until just recently.

We went on Sunday around 11am, which is the peak time for brunch and managed to snag table for 3 under 5 minutes. I decided to get the sampler - Swedish pancake, sausage, scrambled eggs, and 2 meatballs - with a glass of orange juice. With every meal, you get two cinnamon rolls. I thought they were going to be small, but I was surprised that they were huge. The rolls themselves could be a meal. I thought the meal itself was decent. I really liked the pancake and meatballs. I wasn't a fan of the sausage. I gave it to my friend and he wasn't that thrilled with it either.

Definitely wouldn't mind coming back here to try their other breakfast items especially for those cinnamon rolls. Solid 3.5 stars.

Service here definitely gets a solid 2.5, but I had to go with a 4 to round out the amazingness that is the Ann Sather cinnamon roll.  Holy shit balls good.

Anyways, we walked in and were basically ignored for a good 2 minutes which I thought was a little annoying, but they were busy so I cut them some slack.  We were seated and greeted by our server and placed our order rather quickly.  Two eggs for my cousin which came with the potatoes and the cinnamon rolls and I went with the spaetzle with gravy.  She seemed to really enjoy her meal and I LOVED mine!  Those cinnamon rolls are like nothing I've ever tried.  They are so tender and soft and had just the right amount of sweetness.  It was like the whole thing was the gooey middle.  SOOOO good!!  And the spaetzle was also amazing, little crispy edges and the gravy they served with it was so flavorful and savory.  Yum!  I can't wait to go back with Fred and show him what this place is all about! =]

In fact...I will be stopping in this Sunday to pick up a platter of those fab rolls to bring to my cousin's house for PRIDE!!  Holla!
