Not sure why this place has bad reviews. I'm a regular since I work in the building. The food is always fresh and staff is friendly. I've had several different salads, soups, and sandwiches. It's a bit pricey but im willing to pay so I don't have to walk in the cold.

I thought the salad I got was good. Not inexpensive, but service was nice, and I watched her make the salad.

Terrible is all that needs to be said. I got Cream of Broccoli soup and then was informed that au bon pain does not carry crackers. WHAT... You have 4 different soups and crackers are NOT an option.. I then bought a piece of bread that was stale so Paid $6 just to toss the food after i got back to my desk and went to McDonald's. 1st and last time eating there

I have been a regular at this particular ABP for many years and I find it to be the best location in the Loop.   In the morning the people are SOOOOO friendly which is tough at 6AM!   I love the option of creating your own sandwich which I do regularly because I am picky about my toppings.   Coffee is always fresh.   This location is spotless and the manager and other staff are terrific.

Ham & Cheese Croissants are to die for.  Mmmmmmmmmmmm.   The hot chocolate is done the French way, so delicious in the winter, very thick and rich.

I've also tried just about every dessert and bread offering.   The crumb cake is TOTALLY the best ever with tons of crumbs, the best part.  The macaroons are also a favorite, very decadent.   I'd like to see more French desserts like some delicious Napoleons!

I often pick up a couple of loaves of bread on my way home in the evening, as other french breads just do not compare to the recipe here, which beats any grocery store.

I would have posted a review a long time ago but the address is deceptive.  The building address is 161 N. Clark, Chgo Title Building, but the actual entrance is on Randolph.

I love soups. I really really do. Especially when there is a nice variety. And especially when that varieties include a roasted eggplant and a curried lentil. Au Bon Pain has soups. They really do. And they have a nice variety. And that variety includes roasted eggplant and curried lentil. Therefore, I like Au Bon Pain (see that stellar logical reasoning?!). That's all I really got.

this place is ghetto! it is the WORST au bon pain ever! poor management,  rude employees, and dirty all around. i'm so glad they opened a new one across the street in the block 37 building, that one is SOOOO much nicer and everyone is really friendly there. but at this one, the one on clark, go there, only if you don't mind dropping your money on nasty food with rude service.

Staying at the Kimpton Allegro (nice place) and looking for a decent coffee.  Despairing of finding anything on the order of what I'm used to in SF, but I don't have a bike so range is limited.  With dread, I step into Au Bon Pain.  Side note: I know "pain" means bread in french and all, but it still looks like "in the manner of good pain" or something to me.  Just don't like the name.

Anyway, I need something to get by until I can get to a real breakfast place, so I order a raisin bagel w/ cream cheese.  Bagel Woman is unbelievably rude and short, beside herself with fury that I don't intrinsically know the brilliant Au Bon Pain system of filling out a friggin' FORM to order a bagel.  Cuz, you know, it's so intuitive, logical, and pervasive in today's society.

So super f-ing biznatch finishes dressing me down for my idiocy, then we get to the cream cheese.  I say "regular".  She says "LIGHT PLAIN?!"  I say sure.  She says "TOASTED?!"  I say yes.  You'd think I just called her a f-ing t&%t, which she was, but no, I was very pleasant and sunny.  Meanwhile she furiously scribbles these directions -- TO HERSELF -- on the Bagel Form with utmost venom, thereby making all to plain the error of my ways and self-evident correct way to order a bagel in Chicago in an empty Au Bon Lame.

    Beat it.

Two stars only because the coffee is surprisingly good.

My dear Au Bon Pain, I must bid you farewell. You were good to me for months as I was stuck in this area and you were the best place to eat--affordable, tasty, and always welcoming.

On every cold and rainy day, I craved your soup, whether it was your split pea, your chicken and wild rice, chicken noodle, pasta e fagioli, or my favorite--pumpkin. Your mandarin sesame chicken salad and turkey & swiss sandwich were also delightful.

I appreciated your lovely website with nutritional information that allowed me to keep track of my calories. You provided me with hours of entertainment sitting by your windows watching people pass by outside. You even played top-40 music for me.

I appreciated that your location was managed well, I never had to wait in line for too long, your cashiers were polite, and your tables were clean. You did get crowded at times and it was difficult to maneuver around your store but that's because you're popular and I'm not the only one who likes to dine with you.

Au revoir my Au Bon Pain, I shall try to visit again if I'm ever in the area.

This place is an Au Bon Pain in the ASS.

I've been here twice and I swear I'll never go back.  The layout is ridiculous and there is no obvious flow of traffic - you're constantly in the way of other people from the moment you step inside.  Things like bread are tucked away in hidden places and you don't know if you're in line or cutting into someone else's line with the mishmash of cashiers placed in the most awkward of places.  I swear, a blind, epileptic urban planning drop-out designed this place.

The high prices hammer the last nail into this coffin of a restaurant. So many other choices, like Cosi.  Never again will I return. Never again.

Oh the Pain! The Pain of it all! What happened to you? We used to be such good friends. I admit that I've been bringing my lunch with me lately and haven't visited much but I surely thought you would live well without me. Turns out I was wrong. Maybe your just angry but that's no reason to up your prices on smaller containers. And selling me rotten grapes for breakfast? Well that's just cold. I thought maybe we could reconcile but it seems you are just too bitter and jaded. I hate to say goodbye but you'll never be what you once were: good and affordable. Fare thee well.

Some good food: the mac and cheese, believe it or not, is fantastic, though fattening, they have this peanut/chicken Asian wrap that's good, and sandwiches are nice (you can choose your bread and veggies, cheeses, etc., though unlike Corner Bakery, you get nothing with them: no chips, no pickle and I think they charge an extra buck for cheese--a little greedy).  Some choices are reasonable, others pricey ($5 for a soup w/no bread?  Really?).  One big minus is the goofy ordering 'system', it's a total clusterfuck: you wait around a group of people in a non-line (it's not clear who's ordered and who hasn't), then you fill out the order on a little sheet, give to a worker walking around, then you re-join the group, wait for your name to be called, get your food, THEN wait in another line to pay.  This space is too small or just poorly designed for this 'system' and there's nowhere to sit, and barely anywhere to even stand, while waiting.  Call ahead for your order to avoid the majority of this BS, and in any case, don't come if you're in a hurry.  Oh yeah, and this location literally doesn't have to-go menus, so clearly does not encourage phone-in orders.  Huh?

I've been here a couple times and I just have to say that this is the most disorganized place for lunch I can imagine.

I went here for lunch last Wednesday to dish with a friend about some recent life changes. I only suggested this place as it's a midpoint and it's not the Thompson Center.

You walk in and there is a line of people for....it's not clear.  The store is way too shallow for its purpose so there are clusters of people all over the place.  I decided I wanted a sandwich so i went and stood over  by the sandwich area and there's a line.  After looking at the menu and deciding what I want, I try to make eye contact with employees to order.  For some reason there's a manager standing in front of the sandwich line and she completely ignores me...even though I'm right next to her.  Eventually my powerful observations skills get me to notice that I have to walk around the manager to get to the papers to make a circle around what I want.  The manager still ignores me (at this point I'm really confused on why she's there), but a sandwich maker makes my sandwich and gives it to me.

Now I need to pay...time to weave through the crowds (away from the tables)...get the cashier some money and then find a table.  There are lots of empty ones, but they are all full of garbage.

The food was mediocre and the whole experience was rather laughable.  I doubt I'll be back.

I gotta dock them a star for making me write my order out. I love the place - but I can't help but think of the tree that died so i could check off 'chicken caesar wrap'.

    Other than that, magnifico!

I went when they were virtually empty, so no dice on the ambience front, but I got to chew the fat with the cashiers. They're pretty nice.

By the way, if you're listening, my tree-killing chicken caesar wrap was excellent.

Quicktake:  Morning bagel shop and afternoon lunch locale in the hustle and bustle of downtown.

The Skinny: I come here a few times a week to grab a bagel with cream cheese and haul it up to work.  Inside, you will find a form with small pencil that you can fill out so that they don't mess around with your order.  It takes less than two minutes to get my stuff, bagel and cream cheese runs around $2.20.

If you a tall coffee it will be $2.00, so the prices are more than reasonable and they are way faster than Dunkn' Idiots.  I can actually come here and be close to being late for work and still get my breakfast and coffee without having to worry.

The bad: Do not buy soda from here, a one liter bottle of Pepsi was in the neighborhood of $2.40!
