I'm reviewing this place in terms of its bar scene-- I've never eaten anything off their menu so it's not something I can comment about.
This bar opened in place of what was once the Thirsty Turtle, a bar where a library card might have been acceptable ID to get in. The Barking Dog came with new standards (ID scanners, full security), which is fine, but their prices are simply outrageous. In a town like College Park where you never expect to spend more than $4 on a drink, they are really "barking" up the wrong tree. The previous bar had $1 pitchers of beer-- this bar has $9 pitchers. A 900% price increase isn't something that's going to fly on a college budget.
Because they've scared away college students with their prices, when my friends and I do finally decide to go there we usually make our way across the street to Cornerstone. Why? The bar is EMPTY! It's such a huge space, so even with the 30 people that might be there it still looks empty.
While the Thirsty Turtle was a hot-mess of a bar, this place is definitely a sad replacement.
This bar is a second location of a popular bar in Bethesda, and the same sports bar decor and great food is offered here. Â They have a long list of hot dogs and burgers, as well as many flavors of wings. The wings are pretty good, but I really love the burgers - you can get any of them as a beef, turkey, veggie, or black bean burger), topped with a seemingly endless assortment of toppings (salsa/pepperjack, spinach/feta, crab dip, chili, hummus, teriyaki/pineapple, etc.). Â
I was really surprised at how empty this place was, but it could be that people are still warming up to it as a new addition to the area. Â The prices are definitely higher than Cornerstone, which is across the street and always packed, but I will say the food at Barking Dog is a lot better than theirs! Â There are TV's at the bar - not as many as at Cornerstone, but it's still a good place to watch a game. Â Also, they have advertised events on most nights such as trivia, karaoke, or a DJ.
