Best. Wings. EVER.
Not even kidding. They were crunchy but sweet and juicy chicken goodness on the inside. They're not you're typical hot wings, so don't expect something drenched in frank's red hot. The sauce is sweet and savory.... Almost like a delicious sweet and sour sauce with a kick at the end.
We ordered a plate of 20 (for three of us - my boyfriend and the friend we were with have been eating there for years) and I easily could have eaten the whole plate. In fact, I ate most of them lol
The bartender was friendly and VERY attentive - she even had another blue cheese in front of me before I had to ask.
It is definitely a college hang out and while that's not really my scene, I would brave it for the wings alone. Go here now!
This is divey, College bar goodness here. The prices aren't as divey as I'd like them to be but the bartenders and owner are pretty friendly (although it does help to show up with regulars, haha).
Let's be real, though, this bar is not outstanding, by any measure. It's claim to fame is the proximity to Iona's campus and the lack of any competitors within a mile. It's basically the only bar within a short walking distance of Iona, so it's practically the only option unless you want to drive or take a cab, the prices are kind of expensive but again, what are your options? It's your run of the mill bar but if you find yourself stranded on Iona's campus, you will become a regular.
Ate at the Beechmont last Friday and it was great! Haven't been there in a while, but went in for the first time in a year. I was so impressed with the new atmosphere. They made a few subtle needed changes but it still has the historic feeling. The owner greeted us as we walked in and immediately sat us at a nice table by the bar. Wings were better than ever and we happened to be there on French Dip Friday which meant that we got 2 French Dips for $7 each. Overall, great bar food and great low key crowd on Friday night.
Review Source:Although I went to Iona College for 2.5 years, I never ate at The Beechmont. (I only went here for drinks.) So, needless to say, I'm unsure about how the food is. It must be at least somewhat palatable, since many times when I was here the dining areas were packed.
Had a few bad experiences here, though. Not sure what the occasion was on one instance, but I was unable to get a beer for probably close to, if not more than, half an hour since it was so busy at the bar. My most "memorable" experience was on a different occasion when some guy standing next to me tried to steal my wallet. Won't go into any further details about that ... let's just say, it didn't end pleasantly ... for him. I think he was just a dumb drunk guy who was trying to show off how cool he was to his friends or something. Lame.
Anyway, this place is worth checking out if you're in the area and looking to stop somewhere for a drink. Other than that, I'm not sure if I have much of an opinion. Some cool trivia, though: The Beechmont supposedly used to be called "The Levee," or is at least what Don McLean is referring to as "the levee" in his famous song "American Pie." While at Iona, one of my professors told my class this ... I had no idea, nor did I believe him at first. However, it seems to be true - Mr. McLean went to Iona Preparatory School, and maybe even to Iona College. (Unsure about the latter.)
As one reviewer already noted, The Beechmont has a reputation for serving alcohol to just about anyone. Just FYI.
The Beechmont Tavern should probably opt to change it's moniker considering the constantly fluctuant stasis of it's liquor license.
Notorious for serving anyone at all, Beechmont Tavern is the place for underage boozage.
The crowd is typically rife with douchebags, and the bouncer's are all somewhat learning disabled. I would suggest sucking down 40s in the privacy of your own alley rather than attending this crapshack.
