this spot is the best. great service, amazing food, and big screen tv 's everywhere.... do i need to say anymore?!
i ordered onion rings, daddy burger and one of their infamous shakes http://-bomb.com
i would highly reccommend this gem
the cashier steph was a total cutie and super friendly! planning to go back soon :)
I've been here before but it's been awhile. I usually order their classic burger. It is a pretty tasty burger with all the fixings. They are right next door to In-N-Out which could be pretty smart because if you don't want to wait at In-N-Out, you can go next door. Of course, it is a little more expensive.
Review Source:It wasn't the worst food I ever had, but it was close. We ordered lamb burgers. Mine was almost raw. And the seasoning and meat tasted off. The patty didn't taste fresh. About a half hour later my stomach began to really hurt. Usually I have an iron stomach, so this is remarkable. The nacho fries were ok, I ended up eating most of that and threw away about two thirds of my burger. I was very disappointed, because I read good reviews and they have the gumption to be right next to In n Out. Sigh. I really wanted to like it, but ... I didn't.
Review Source:What do you call a restaurant that's part good prices, part sports-oriented, part gourmet, part fast- food and part sit-down? You might think it's a restaurant with a split personality, but I just call it Big Daddy's Fire Grill.
Many people thought they were crazy to open next to In-and-Out Burger, but they are doing fine and have opened a second restaurant directly opposite Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. Â
They cook on an open grill and use 100% oak; not propane or charcoal. It's the best burger I've ever had.
Love. This. Place. It's probably a good thing I don't live in Pasadena or I'd turn into a hamburger. I went there with a local grad student--he and I split an order of fries and we're glad we did. I had a burger and it was cooked the way I asked. I like being able to chose from a varied list of toppings--like avocado and other not so commonplace things. Plenty of food! And I loved that they had (Penfolds) Chardonnay.
Absolutely will go back next time I'm in town. Did I mention Happy Hour???
Great turkey & veggie burgers and the onion rings are to die for!!!! They also carry sweet potatoes fries, and garlic fries also but i am more into the onion rings. The burgers are huge which is why you will pay a little more then IN & OUT Burgers but they are worth the $$$. Â All together i still managed to get my meal under $12 dollars which was not bad for a Great Turkey Burger, Onion Rings & Drink..This is not a drive through which i felt was the only disadvantage but they have a nice little patio to sit and enjoy your meal.
Review Source:Came here on a Sunday afternoon with my boyfriend. I had this place bookmarked for so long so we decided to try it out.
I ordered the 1/3 pd Daddy Burger with nacho cheese and bacon while my bf ordered the 1/2 pd Daddy Burger with a side of potato fries.
First off, the service was not very friendly. I believe the cashier's name was Cindy? Yeah, she needs to smile.
When our food arrived, the gentleman bringing it couldn't even distinguish which one was which and honestly neither could we. Both were the same size and obviously because they were the same burger tasted the same.
The patty had this very intense charbroiled taste which after a while became very overbearing.
The sweet potato fries were good, but towards the end tasted very salty.
I was excited to try this place, but I'm sad to say I left regretting my visit.
I have been past tihs place many time, eaten at In n Out next door, and never thought to go here. Today, craving a burger and onion rings I did some yelping. This place showed up and I had to try it. Well worth it. The fries and onion rings are good (fries are ok, Plate 38 has better fries) and onion rings are tasty. I usually prefer flakey batter, but these (breaded) were seasoned very well and not just a blobby mess of batter around soggy raw onion like most.
Wife said it was one of the best burgers ever (Big Daddy).
We'll be back.
I've had big daddy's fire grill bookmarked for quite a long time and I was finally able to fight off the lure and mystique of in-n-out to give it a try (ugh big mistake). The menu is what you would expect; burgers, sandwiches and plenty of sides. I've heard/read a lot about their signature daddy burger and onion rings, so we ordered those, a classic burger and their killer coleslaw.
The burgers were very lackluster. The classic was decent but the amount of mayo present was unappealing. The daddy burger was more a meatloaf than burger. Being 'infused' with so many other ingredients took away the natural meaty taste of the beef. And the worst/most unforgivable feature of the burgers was the meat to bun ratio, both burgers were extremely off. (I hate it when you order a burger and the bun is 2 times bigger than the patty)
The one item we didn't have any complaints about was the house onion rings. They were super crunchy, tasty and we really enjoyed the use of red onions. Very good. However, the coleslaw couldn't ride the same positive wave. It was swimming in mayo. You couldn't taste anything but mayonnaise. With all that mayo, calling it the 'killer' coleslaw is an understatement.
In all honesty, I know this burger joint has tons of fans, but I'm not one of them. Especially given that in-n-out is literally a few steps away, I don't think I'll ever come back.
Recommendation: Onion Rings
I really like this place, I think the food is good. It's considered gourmet fast food, so don't expect this to be a sit-down and be served kind of restaurant. I have tried all of the sausages, and most of them were good. I had a mushroom burger here and it was delicious.
My criticism are only 2 things:
1) It takes a long time to get your food. Usually between 15-20 minutes for a single meal.
2) I think the price is a little steep considering that this isn't a sit down and be served restaurant. I ordered 2 burgers and 1 fries and it came to be almost $20.
But overall, it's a decent restaurant and offers a really casual atmosphere.
How do I start this? Oh my effin gawd ive found my burger heaven!!! Located next to In-N-Out, and yet I have never hesitated to go next door to it. I usually get the big daddy burger and words cant describe the taste of that burger! They also have nacho cheese fries and its delicious. My favorite? The garlic fries! They are absolutely addicting!
They also make their own beer, although ive never tried. And they have happy hour and Peets Tea ans Coffee in the restaurant.
Overall, a must try restaurant and you wont be disappointed! Service is great, the employees are friendly and theres also outaide seating with plasma TVs. Great for those of you who want a nice fat burger, wings, and/or beer during a sports game.
First time here. We were just yelping around finding the nearest burger place that was open at 9ish on a weekday. I thought it was pretty funny that In-N-Out was right next door!
Environment: Very clean! It seemed very family-friend environment, which made it even better. They have indoor seating and outdoor seating. This is a good place to eat and watch tv, indoor/outdoor too! Especially in the summer!
Food: Mushroom burger. Very flavorful! The meat was cooked right and just about right with the seasoning. When you normally eat a burger, you don't want so much bread, this one was great! We also had garlic fries, oh man these garlic fries are intense! Pretty strong but they were great !! -- I'm curious on the lamb burger next!
Beverage: We got a strawberry with fresh banana milk shake, I absolutely LOVE IT! It taste very smooth and fresh! I highly recommend it.
Service: They are very friendly and has very good recommendations on choices of food. If you order to dine in, they bring the food to you!
Overall: I recommend this place, even if it's right next to In-N-Out. Try something different! =)
The most INSANE Turkey Burger I've ever had...Hands down! I decided to try the 1/2lb version and, boy, am I glad I did. Wow! Very satisfying isn't even the word. It was hot, juicy, and extremely fresh with fresh veggies and delicious Pesto Aioli Dressing. Get the Garlic Fries...Trust me! I'll definitely be back. Amazing quality and a comfortable, cool atmosphere with outside seating available too.
Review Source:The food is awesome! Â I"m a vegetarian who eats fish and there are plenty of selections. Â I ordered the grilled Salmon sandwitch. Â It was delicious. Â They also have beer selections to pair with your food. Â The ower was very nice. Â He made sure we were comfortable by turning on the heat lamps and changing the channel so we could watch basketball. Â I was also very pleased by how accomodating they were to allow me to allow me to bring my small dog on the patio.
Review Source:This burger place was bomb! I went there honestly because the in n out line was way too long. I ordered the big daddy burger and it was amazing. I got it lettuce wrapped and honestly it was the best lettuced wrapped burger I've had!
Lettuce was super fresh and the burger was amazing.
My boyfriend ordered the chicken sandwich and loved it as well!
Fries were okay but I will definitely be back!
It just didn't do it for me.
After reading many reviews on the chicken sandwich, I felt compelled to try to give it a try Chicken sandwich...especially after I read that it's marinaded overnight with lots and lots of garlic. 2 flattened pieces of white chicken with an herb rub sandwiched in between a very soft French roll with generous amounts of pesto aioli (which tasted all aioli and absentee pesto). Â
Classic 1/3 burger was nice and chubby, a good size burger. Â We could definitely taste the smokey flavor from the oak fire grill. Â Some parts were almost too smokey but no foul done there. Â
Trio of shoe strong fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings: Out of all three fried foods, I enjoyed the good old regular french fries the best.
Chili cheese fries: the chili has a kick to it and it's not from the jalapenos. Â They also add some black beans throughout, which was a nice surprise. Â Despite all this, it didn't taste great. Â
Your best bet here is to keep it simple: stick with what they are known for - get a burger and a side of the regular fries.
Location: on the block's corner and next to In N Out
Parking: free parking lot
Good local alternative to the premium burger places like Umami and the Counter. Â It's basically an old burger stand converted with a special wood fire oven that cooks your burger with a good wood fire taste. Â I've not had much luck though with the beer taps, sometimes they'd be really flat, other times the beer was ultra bitter that I couldn't drink it. Â But the burgers are well-seasoned and the garlic fries are great.
They have several HDTV's around. Â
You know their burger has to be good if they can stay busy right next to the In-N-Out Burger!
Okay this review comes from my Happy Happy Full of Yummy of a Belly .
This Was my first time here and heard lots of great things about them .
The food was amazing I had ordered 2 burgers along with the Daddy's Trio Basket...The Big Daddy Burger (Half pound of Black Angus... oh Ya) and The Salmon Filet with mushrooms it was amazing the bread was incredible the food was so tasty and the outdoor seating was beautiful.
This service is fantastic very polite very helpful staff, I also drank their house beer the called the Big Daddy's Brock it was amazing...
Ya, skip the In-N-Out next door. This place is the ticket.
You can never, ever go wrong with wood fired food.
The Angus Chuck Infused with Crushed Fresh Garlic, Onions, Basil, Italian Parsley, Egg, Bread Crumbs, Black Pepper, and our Top-Secret Ingredient (The Daddy Burger), uh, yeah. This is the one.
The Pork LoinMarinated Overnight in Rosemary, Crushed Fresh Garlic, Dijon, Topped With Tomato & Lettuce, with our own Pesto Aioli Dressing and Served on our French Garlic Roll was so moist and tasty!
Added bonus, the use Giuliano's breads! (or at least when we were there)This my friends, is the money, see my review on Giuliano's.
We stopped in right as they were opening and immediately after a lively, early morning hike over in Eaton Canyon. I say lively because we survived and managed not to get lost for days on end. Anyway, we were so famished upon arrival since we were running on unsalted nuts, spicy Asian rice snax and fumes. We needed carne and we needed it in burger form. Here's the rundown...
Burger:
I opted for a 1/3 lb. turkey burger because I absolutely love em. Also, I figured turkey would be a somewhat lighter option especially with all the sides we were getting at the table. Haha. Wrong. This is one juicy turkey burger, I can only assume these patties contain a higher fat percentage, which is totally yummy and fine by me. This was a fab burger, smothered in pesto aioli [they are very heavy handed with the sauce, so if mayo or creamy sauces freak you out, order on the side] and some fresh veg. I loved my burger, but my four other hiking-mates were less than thrilled with their beef burgers. I didn't get to sample any of their burgers, but it seemed the general consensus for the beef burgers was a unanimous, "meh." This was surprising to me as felt I just consumed one of the most satisfying and successful turkey burgers I've had in some time. *shrug*
Sides:
- I ordered onion rings, but we were told they only had enough for one order [our other friend got the last batch], which I thought was totally weird and confusing since we got there RIGHT at opening...? Okay. I stole one from across the table when they arrived and turns out these rings are made with red onion. I'm glad I didn't get an order of my own because they were under seasoned, and know what? I discovered I prefer my rings made with good old fashioned white onions, hands down.
- Since we were saved from the mediocre rings, we got the sweet potato fries instead. These seemed pretty standard, and were the best of our fried sides with a crispy outer, soft center, and their sweetness went well with all the tasty aiolis we tried [dijon, pesto, garlic].
- Another friend got the garlic fries which were crunchy and infused with tons of garlic flavor, but very greasy and difficult to eat more than a small handful.
Sauces:
- All aiolis, delish.
- The smoky ketchup sounded good on paper but was straight up gross. The consistency was like that of ill-blended salsa and tasted like burned tomatoes. Blehh.
Three stars for a great post-hike turkey burger, but some not so stellar sides.
My experience was odd. I LOVED my burger, but hours later, I hated everything about it. On January 4th, I rolled in about an hour before closing and had ordered the Big Daddy Burger and was incredibly impressed. Whatever they season it with was through and through the entire patty and every bite was delicious, tender, juicy, awesome. I do distinctly remember the AC was cranked so cold, it felt like a meat locker. Numb fingers and toes make it a little difficult to enjoy a meal. None the less, that burger was gone in mere minutes. I was looking forward to my next visit.
Just a few hours later, I woke up with a feeling of dread, and sprinted to the wash room just in time to unleash all things unholy in a such a fit of madness, I was afraid the toilet couldn't flush fast enough. The look of abject terror on my dog's face almost made the experience worth it... actually, no. Not worth it at all.
My buddy who dined with me felt fine after his burger. Â Taste wise, I still feel like that was among the best burgers i've had in Pasadena, but i'm still not brave enough to return.
Best Damn burger in LA and possibly in he West! Get the Big Daddy Burger that has been marinated then talk to me....Trust me.
Oh and you can get you Big Daddy Burger anyway you want it. The location by Huntington Hospital is bigger and newer, the one on Walnut in Pasadena is great but smaller and way more busy.
Get the "trio": Onion rings, sweet pot fries and regular potato fries. I get it with their Ketchup and garlic aioli......Off the Hook!!!!
Garlic fries, come to momma.
PARKING: Small lot east of the restaurant or street parking
FOOD: Cafe style order then enjoy
-Side Trio: Onion rings, garlic fries, and sweet potato fries. Onion rings were incredibly light and almost tempura style. I believe they use red onion, and it makes a significant difference! Garlic fries are skinny and crisp. Sweet potato fries are comparable to the ones at Boiling Crab.
-Hawaii Five-O Burger: These burgers are huge and do not mess around. The pineapple was somewhat overwhelming, but I ordered the 1/3 pound burger. I'd suggest ordering up and getting the 1/2 pound!
When I went, they showed a Lakers game. Definitely a great place to chill and watch a sports game!
We went there for the second time, and overall, were very satisfied. I had the Big Daddy burger with gorgonzola, and it was so good. Perfect amount of smoky flavor, thick, juicy patty with garlic and other items mixed in, and nice balance of flavors and bun-to meat ratio was good.
Pros:
* The sweet potato fries are to die for, really light and crispy, and not greasy.
* Â Beer, wine, and big screen tv's are a plus, and no lines. Service was quick that night.
Cons:
* The 1st time we were there, my burger tasted a little too charred, so maybe it depends when you go, and what you order.
* Â Menu on wall could use descriptions of what's in each item.
* Kind of expensive for burgers.
During a long quest to find a big delicious burger joint, the girl and I came across Big Daddy's on Yelp. After reading the mostly good reviews we decided to give it a shot.
IMO it didn't live up to the hype. The burger was pretty average to me, they mentioned all the spices and ingredients that go into the meat, but I couldn't taste it.
They fries were good but nothing spectacular.
A soso burger = A soso review
Stumbled upon this place last night, it used to be the old rosarito Mexican place, so we were surprised to see something new there. we thought they might have ribs, so we were excited. Unfortunately they did not :(
Happy hour during the laker game, so I had a pint of Big Daddy beer for $2.50, which is ok with me. Sandwiches and burgers are a little pricy and you have to pay extra for cheese, avocados, etc as none are included.
I had the big daddy burger with avocado. It was cooked perfectly and I finished e whole thing, which is surprising, as I usually can't finish burgers that large. Whatever their dijon mayo aioli stuff is, was finger lickin good. DELICIOUS garlic fries. Fried to perfection, and the garlic was well distributed throughout. My boyfriend had the filet mignon sandwich, which he was not a huge fan of. I had a bite, but don't really remember, I was so enthralled with my burger.
Next time I'm getting a nutella milkshake.
Big Daddy's makes the best sweet potato fries I have ever tasted. Â They are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Â Having eaten these, I know there is no reason to put up the dry, overly fried versions I've been served before. Â Each bite yields the taste of moist, fluffy sweet potato. Â The other fried sides are equally good, notably the onion rings. Â They batter rings of sweet red onion in what looks like a panko breading. Â It is impossibly crisp and they batter does not slide off with each bite! Â The last member of the group are their premium french fries, as part of the Big Daddy's Trio.
Their sandwiches are quite pricey at about $10 each. Â They do boast a good variety with turkey, lamb, pork burgers as well as interesting sandwiches. Â I had been mentally obsessing over lamb burgers so I took advantage of the one here, which is unexpected since burger joints don't typically have one on their menu. Â As with all burgers, the lamb burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pesto aioli. Â To differentiate it from other lamb burgers, the patty is lamb, mixed with mint, garlic, and spices. Â It was just okay. Â The patty somehow came across generic, despite it's unique composition. Â There was something cookie cutter about the way the patty was formed and it was fairly cooked through. Â The lamb was assertive enough that you could tell it was lamb but not too overwhelming with gaminess. Â
J's salmon sandwich was an tiny thing about 70% the size of my burger. Â The same toppings of lettuce, tomato, and pesto aioli matched his salmon quite well, especially with the lemony, pesto aioli and the salmon was very moist. Â Our major complaint was the size, or lack thereof. Â
Big Daddy's is no typical burger joint, as you can tell. Â If you are in the mood for a little something more interesting, this is worth a visit, especially if you're into onion rings or sweet potato fries.
Went here because we had a groupon deal which was good on two daddy burgers, two side fries, and two large cokes all this for $10
They wouldn't let us sub or pay the difference on onion rings ($3.95) so we pay extra for it.
The beef in my burger tasted rare (and don't get me wrong, i do like it medium rare but this one, just tasted uncooked.
String fries and onion rings was alright . Â
Save yourself a trip and go to In n Out down the street instead...
The Grilled Chicken Sandwich is one of the best that I have tasted. Â the Chicken is moist and the pesto mayo is something that my 6-year old raves about. Makes me want to try some of everything on the menu!
For weight and health minded folks there are grilled options galore. Â And for adventurous folks there are many kinds of sauces to choose from!
Beer? This is not a beer selection. It is half swill, half good beers. I just don't understand the spread here. I did not have beer but my lamb burger was good. Husband got combo with Hawaiian burger and I got a lamb burger and iced tea. Total bill, $22. Not expensive. Not cheap either. I'd go back because there are options other than beef for me and the lamb was pretty good. I'd try fish or even a veggie next time.
The lamb was tender, mint was a nice touch and it was a good size. The fries were tasty, I snagged several from the husband.
Low key place, nice service, overall a decent experience. I'd probably give more stars if I could give it a 3.5.
My wife and I decided to try this place out after some recommendations from friends. We also noticed they opened up a location next to In n Out on Foothill so I figure they had to be good.
I ordered the Classic burger while my wife had the Turkey burger. The gal taking my order asked if I wanted to add the combo of fries and a drink. When I said I wanted onion rings, she just charged me for the onion rings but, not for my soda. That was cool!
The burgers were pretty good. The buns are flavored with garlic and the patty had a nice smoky flavor. My wife thought the turkey burger was better than the one she had at Hook burger last month. The onion rings are made with red onions and were excellent.
We'll be back. This location on California is right next to Vons so you do your grocery shopping afterward.
Groupon deal: $10 for 2 Daddy burgers, 2 order of fries & 2 soft drinks. Paid tax (about $2) but overall, a reasonable price to try something new.
2012 must be the year of the burger in Pasadena. Every month, I hear about a new burger joint popping up in the area (Umami, Slater's 50/50, 2nd branch of Big Daddy's, etc...). It is tough trying to keep track of them all. Where to go for my next burger meal? Usually, the default burger fix for me is @ In&Out so it definitely takes effort for me to try a new place.
The food:
- Big Daddy Burger: beef patty infused with a bunch of other stuff. Bf says that it was merely okay...and could not distinguish anything special about the burger.
- Turkey Burger: a wee bit dry and charred tasting
- Garlic fries: sooo..not really super garlicky..maybe a subtle hint. The fries itself are excellent - very crispy and great portions. A+ for fries...C- for amount of garlic.
I have to say: they have awesome menu writers. All their burgers sounded so mouthwatering delicious, we kinda hyped ourselves up while reading the menu as we were waiting for the burger. As Shakespeare says: "Expectation is the root of all heartache".
Big Daddy's does have a few things going for it: variety of burgers (lamb, salmon, chicken, pork, veggie, etc...), decent sides (fries, onion rings, cole slaw, salads) and of course, beeeeeeer. Plus, they've got milk shakes & cake pops.
- private parking lot (kind of awkward though)
- indoor & outdoor seating
- expect to table stalk during the lunch rush
- the looooong drive thru line you see as you approach the restaurant is for In&Out (best to go around it or you could be waiting for a long time...)
So very disappointing. We are frequent In 'N' Out customers and always wondered how this place was. Today, unfortunately, we gave it a shot. First impression was ok, the menu on the wall was very non descriptive. I don't understand why they can't put descriptions up there like they do in the little flyer. Oh well...least of the problems. We order 2 Classic Burgers with Cheddar cheese. The man taking our order asks us how we want them cooked..Medium rare (of course). We also got the Daddy's Trio which consists of onion rings, sweet potato fries, and regular fries (we were given the option to make the regular fries garlic fries...so we went with that).
We sat outside and the food came out pretty quickly. Ian started on the garlic fries which were extremely soggy and limp. Gross. I took a bite out of my burger and first impression was pretty good. The bread was delicious. Ian took a bite and asked "Does your burger have cheese?" It did not. He took them back to the counter and about 1 minute later returned with the same burgers....with a cold slice of cheese just plopped on them. Seriously??? What kind of service is that? And why are we paying extra for a cold slice of cheese on our burger? They also reassembled it so carelessly. The bite marks from my first bite weren't even lined up. Come on now.
Also, if a place is going to ask how you want a burger cooked....they should actually do it the way you specify. Both of our burgers were well done. I also don't understand where the name Fire Grill comes from. No sense of smokiness or fire grilled-ness.
I can't say anything about any of their other menu items...but if you're gonna have a burger place beside In n Out...you better know how to at the very least make a decent cheeseburger. Boo.
