This is really a cool lil' joint. Love having options in Five Points. The night my boyfriend and I went we really had no expectations & just wanted something out of the normal restaurant. We walked in during the trivia hour and it was quite a lively atmosphere.
It was jammed packed when we got there and it stayed that way even two hours later when we left. Â I can appreciate the late hours & I like knowing I can find decent food late (if I'm ever out REALLY late). Â Anyway, the menu is a basic bar menu but with a few extras thrown in. I got the chicken nachos. They were tasty & had lots of good toppings but...I needed more cheese. It's not the melty velveeta/nacho cheese-cheese. Instead they sprinkled shredded cheese and melted it just a tad. Well of course shredded cheese doesn't always cover all of the chips, there wasn't a lot of it and it can be kinda dry. Anyway, next time I think I will ask if they have the nacho cheese-cheese.
My margarita was just ok...I suppose in a basic, really busy bar, beer, shots or something straight on the rocks might be your best option. All in all we had a good time listening to music in between trivia rounds and just trying to blend in with the young folks. Â That night it was a younger crowd (mid to late 20's). I wouldn't mind trying it for lunch one day. Either way, I'll go back.
We were travelling from Virginia to Texas and this was a nice place near our hotel. Â The appetizer sampler is a must! Â The waiter was cool, very attentive and polite. Â Our entrees were great also, no complaints. Â We were here on a Saturday night around Christmas so it was pretty quiet for a bar...
Review Source:Exactly what 5 Points needed. Thank God something like this opened up close to my house. It's a great central location to meet friends for drinks. The food menu has expanded a TON from the original. It's good food at a fair price and the service is excellent. Lots of friendly staff. I felt right at home eating there. AND I can bring my daughter during the day and have absolutely no qualms about it.
Be sure to get a PARKING PASS if you park at Chik Fil A. But if you get one, it's a great safe place to park after 9pm.
The location of Black Market Bar holds a lot of memories for me-- I still miss the Hippodrum and Dugans. But, it seems that Black Market will be the perfect place to make new ones. The bar is spacious and has plenty of places to sit. The bartenders are awesome and attentive and the prices are fair. They have a great selection of beer and liquor and their signature drinks.
They also have food, which I haven't had it this location, but if it is anything like their 280 location then it will be fantastic.
And, for the best thing about Black Market--Well Hell. $1 well drinks on Wednesdays. Its just too good to pass up. Its packed, but there is much more room at the 5 points location. I really wish I still lived in Birmingham so I could drop by here more often.
I'm very excited about the opening of the 2nd Black Market location in the Southside neighborhood! While I'm sad to see Speakeasy close downtown, this is a great addition to the scene in Southside and I may find myself here a lot more often. I went in Monday night after a work meeting and was met with the great open space that this building offers - that I had enjoyed back in the days of Dugan's (yes, I realize that dates me). I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the decent sized crowd out to enjoy food & drinks. I'm not sure yet how I would categorize the patrons other than it was a good mix in age and style. The beer selection was good, although they were out of a few too many for comfort, but I chalk that up to the growing pains of literally opening a couple of days before. I'll be back to check out the menu and let you know!
Based on the great reviews for their 280 location and the track record of the owners/management I have high expectations for this location! Be sure to check it out next time you are in the neighborhood.
