OK y'all said this place was small and cozy... LOL more like cracker box size but delightfully entertaining! My girlfriend was happily celebrating another birthday, and had a yearning for fish and chips, over to Bonn Lair she requested.

I arrived a little bit earlier than the others, grabbed a nice cool Crispin Cider and found a empty room nestled in the back. Sitting, drinking and yelping, I was in my own world when some regulars came in from the back patio (which is so small no words can describe it!).  Since I was not a familiar face and I was alone, they proceed to introduce themselves, sparked up a conversation and to my surprise offered to go get me some apricots from their house/tree just up the street.  I love bars like this, full of regular and very genuine folks.

My group arrived, we quickly began order buckets of beer which are $14 for 4 beers.  We also ordered the Reuben sandwich with potato chips and Fish and Chips.  We were all able to sit in the back room to converse and be mary.  Food arrived: Fish and Chips were DA Bomb!!! Reuben had way too much sauerkraut and sadly I was unable to finish it.

The music. . . This Irish Pub was playing Motown's greatest Hits!! Yes I was in Heaven!!!!

All in All we had a lot of fun, and after getting a lil bit to noisy for this small establishment we moved on to the next bar.  And of course I had to say good bye to the folks I meet, including the wonderful Betty, who declares she is their every day that ends with a "Y". . . .and to come back and say hello!  I sure will.

Got to check out Bonn Lair with my family right around the dinner hour. A few regulars were hanging around the bar, but otherwise it was pretty quiet. Interior is your solid, standard Irish/UK pub decor, but the size of the restaurant makes it feel very cozy.

We ordered a few pints and some traditional pub food. The food took quite a while to come out, but with more beer and conversation it was not too much of an issue. I got the shepherd's pie, and it was all around solid. I sampled some of the fish & chips, which was excellent as well. Everyone at the table seemed thoroughly satisfied by the meal.

Bonn Lair is a great place for some all-around solid pub food with a good atmosphere and good beer. The food ma

I can't really say I'm a very big fan.  We come here occasionally because my husband and his friends like it.

They do have a rather good beer selection so that's a plus.  Hoegaarden on tap will always get points from me.  Don't bother ordering wine though -- they have a pretty wide variety of wines, but they are all shitty brands (basically one step up from space-bags).

The food selection is VERY minimal.  They could really use some additional appetizers or bar snacks on the menu.

The back room has dart boards 'n junk.

It's certainly a dive bar.  The whole place just seems kinda dank and dirty.  Seat cushions are soiled/stained looking, and most surfaces are sticky or just plain giving off an unsanitary vibe.  Pretty much like all the pubs I visited in England, so hey they've at least got authenticity on their side.

Nice little pub with a friendly and cozy feeling.  Great happy hour prices and some outstanding beer on tap.  Clientele was very friendly as was bartender. Definitely a place to come back to.

My buddy and I walked to the Bonn for a couple beers!  Good stuff, I like the fact that the folks who work there allow you to taste before purchase.  They aren't pretencious about it and make you feel like your a non beer drinking moron!  I enjoyed a Porter for the first time and am now a big fan.  I love the chalk board where beers are listed.  Most I can't pronounce so my orders sounded like  "I'll take one of the 4th from the bottom" !   As far as atmosphere, I'm not a soccer loving Euro or even a soccer loving American but I like the dust on the soccer trophys and the small TV's as they broadcast the games, gives the place a splash of sports bar feel without it overtaking the ambience.
I also like the fact that the aisle at the bar is very narrow and you have to squeeze by to get to a back table even if bar is one to two customers deep, just a folksy, cozy feel.  After working all night and not sleeping all day, it didn't take long for a couple tall porters to fill the veins so the cheese fries hit the spot. Nothing fancy, next time the fish and chips will be in order.
Good stuff, can't wait to return and pour back a few.

Guinness might be the best selling brew in the world, but in Sacramento, it's hard to find a place that knows how to pour one correctly.  Bonn Lair has done pints properly from day one and I'll always be a fan for that reason.  Three pours, people.

Now, the food.  Pub grub is simple food, but it's easy to get it wrong. Most places do, in fact.  Not here.  No sub-par bangers or yellow, waxy mashed potatoes. They buy the good stuff and make it like they care.

I've been coming here since the week it opened.  Ever wonder why your Brit and Irish friends get all misty about their back-home pubs?  Have a pint and a pie at this place and you'll get it.  Simple things done well.  Comfortable setting with friendly people.  That's all there is and all you need.

I've had a string of really good restaurant experiences lately and I'm not sure if it is just luck or whether I am learning which doors to go through here in Sac.

One door I'm super glad I went through is Bonn Lair. I walked past here after a wonderful meal at Juno's the other day, and thought to myself "I really do love old school brit pubs". As it happened a buddy was in town from Petaluma so I suggested we hit this place up for a couple brews, some fish n chips and a whole lot of bs (from us only, of course).

The food was awesome. My buddy got the old school classic BLT with potato salad and scarfed it down with a couple hefes. I went for the fish and chips and tried a few of their imported beers and they were all amazing. The bartender was great and the atmosphere was friendly but local, if that makes sense. It seemed most of the folks there weren't first timers, but everyone was nice. I need to hit Bonn Lair up more often.

An English pub in Sacramento! Trying to increase my beer pallet we went here and were not disappointed at all. Great selection of beers on tap as well as a decent variety in the bottle. It feels that this place was picked up from the streets of London and placed on J street.
It's a great atmosphere, good beer, good people. Can't ask for much more

Good beer, good food and good friends make this place a fun place to go. The place has an attitude of its own and if you aren't willing to speak up then you probably will wait to get service.

I prefer this place during the weekdays because it bottle necks at the bar and there aren't to many places to stand but to do not stay away from this place.

Bonn Lair as a bar is a pretty decent place - nice atmosphere, fun people, and A-OK food!  BEWARE: they do not serve liquor here, so don't ask!  Only beer folks!  So if you want some foofy lala drink, you're gonna have to go elsewhere.  I like the feel of this place as a laid back hangout.

Now - trivia night.  DO NOT GO.  Not only did the trivia take over 2 hours, but the guy who runs it was not enthusiastic, not loud enough, and at points - just straight up rude.  I have done trivia at many pubs, and this was by far the worst.  It's too bad because I think it could be really great and bring in a great crowd.... but it doesn't.  People were leaving before it was even over because it was so horrible.  I'll never go back for trivia, EVER!

I will go back to Bonn Lair for some beer though!  Although my food order was incorrect, we still had a good time.  If you like beer, this could be your place - just steer clear of Sunday night Trivia!

    This place makes me happy.

Makes me feel like I'm back in London, enjoying a pint and watching rugby. They have Grimbergen on tap and shepherd's pie.

    Sigh.

But get there early. It's small and seating goes very quickly.

I am only writing this about the darts. Though I will mention this was the site of my very first Yelp event, with free buttons and nail files, loud talking on the back patio, food from Opa-Opa. I recall a very fun night, despite getting a bit droopy and shitfaced.

Hadn't been in Bonn Lair for quite some time, until one random evening when my BF is driving down the street and says he wants to play darts.

    Darts. But where?

Continuing on.... we drove through East Sac, passing a number of drinking rooms and other fine establishments, then through the Fab 40s to look at Christmas lights. We headed down to J Street, made the left turn, and saw it!

    Bonn Lair.

Hey, why not? 50 cent darts, or maybe a buck. The dart boards seemed to be in pretty good shape, but what do I know, I'm a novice. It was warm and friendly, we talked TV with the other people in the back room, we didn't poke anyone's eye out.

A couple weeks later I found a pretty good dart board at Ross or Marshalls; hence haven't been back to the pub. (And why is it we can only find certain games and toys at Christmas?)

This place reminds me of a bar in Switzerland!! "Quaint" is the perfect word to describe it. It's a cozy, cabin-like pub hidden in a little corner of Downtown Sac, I would have never even known it was there had we not come for Trivia Night on Sunday. We had a good time, but the rounds were kind of short and went by really fast, I kind of wished there were a third round. The announcer needs to speak A LOT slower, and he needs a mic! We came with a team of 8 and there was NO room for us except in the back corner where we couldn't hear a thing. So I'd probably come back for drinks with a friend, or to grab a brunch...but not to do another Trivia Night. There's Limelight nearby that is more organized and does 4 rounds of questions, which I prefer more.

Also, bring cash! Because they have a $10 minimum for all credit card purchases at the bar.

How can I even quantify Bonn Lair?

I live way too close to this bar, which is awesome and dangerous. The last two weeks of 2011 were spent here, and I relished every second of those evenings. The bar is cozy, clean, with a fabulous beer selection. When it gets busy, you can actually still hear one another, and it has that "je ne sais quoi" neighborhood pub feel, which is exactly what it is.

I had the pleasure of being here on "Ye Olde Pub Night" when all the electricity was turned off and candles and lamps abounded. What an awesome night. I love it when places create experiences that are genuine.

Fabulous beer, fabulous people. A favorite.

I suppose I can understand why this bar isn't for everybody, but the rest of us don't care about you nay-sayers.  If you like beer, than this is a place you need to check out once in a while.  Their selection is varied and extensive, and I've never had any problems with service.  In fact, on multiple I've gone in wanting to try something new, and just tell them.  They have always been helpful and I've definitely expanded my beer pallet here.

If you want a place with a lot of space or a spot to watch big sports events, you should probably go to Bro-West or the P.O.S. known as MVPs.  This place is much better-suited for you and a few pals who want to have a few pints, maybe shoot some darts, and just hang out.

Their prices are reasonable.  No, you won't be able to get a $2 pint of PBR, and they don't have pitchers (my one request is that this change someday!!).  But you can have a few real beers with some kick to them, most for no more than $5 or $6.

You get what you pay for! 2 or 3 beers here is easily worth the money when you consider the higher alcohol content compared to tasteless light American beers (not that I don't enjoy one on occasion).

I suspect for most people this is a Love It or Hate It type of place, but give it a chance!

People always are raving about this place but I just don't get why???  I've been here a few times and besides their English beer selection this place is nothing special.  If people want to call a run down bar cool... then so be it.  I'd rather have exceptional service than an old bar to look at.  I don't come here to often, in fact I've got my own local in which everyone gets superb service, whether a regular or not.

My most recent stunt (tonight) was to stop in for a quiet pint.  I wanted to try something different.  I asked the bar tender if they had Cask Iron beer.  He looked at me in a replying "No."  I then had to point to the two varieties I was speaking about he looked back at me and replied in a condescending attitude "We don't have Cask Iron." ...He made me look as if I didn't know what I was talking about.  I didn't, however I added the "Iron" on to the Cask by mistake, he should of picked up on that but instead kept spinning my wheels.

After going through that debauchery, and not knowing the payment policy I had to deal with asking about what methods of payment they'd take.  Only having card and no ATM they had a 10 dollar limit on card.  So the closest ATM was down the street.  He gave me a bit more of an eye rolling attitude and by that time I was over it.

My overall view of this place is that if your not a local or with any friends then probably should come back another time.  I would recommend it to try a cask iron beer but just go with an open mind, whatever that means.  Oh yeah, beers are on the higher price end.

Small and cozy. Bonn Lair is a pretty neat little pub that offers unique beers on tap and good food. Because their beers are relatively expensive, this place makes for a great second (or third?) stop in your night, after you've already had a few. I really like that they don't serve liquor because sometimes you just don't want to be around that kind of crowd.

Their pub fries are seriously semi-orgasmic,  especially after you've thrown back a few pints of strong beer!

Although I'm not really into pubs, this one was really cool!
(Read my friend Logan Stark's review below!)

I came here for Logan's birthday and I bought an Alegash(sp?) which is a sweet beer that they suggested for $6! Not too bad because it was in a big mug. We went to the back to play some darts. The bathrooms were placed in an awkward spot right by the darts. It's a bit spacious for a med sized group of people (10-15).

I had fun here. Cool vibes

The Bonn Lair is still one of my favorite places to meet up with a friend after work for a pint or two.    Maybe I just  prefer cozy places with lots of dark corners, or perhaps it's the friendly bartenders and crowd that I find there.

For Octoberfest, they have a Hacker-Pschorr German brew on tap that is quite delicious!

[I'm actually glad that it isn't totally popular across the board.  I've been fortunate in that the days and times that I have popped in, it hasn't been overly packed, so I can find a perch and settle in to enjoy a pint. ]

If you are going out alone to drink a couple of pints and converse with the locals, Bonn Lair may be a little awkward unless you are lucky enough to grab one of the very few stools at its quaint little bar.  Other than that, Bon Lair can only be described as a maze of dark corners for people to hide in.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a place where you can hide in a corner with a few friends and down a couple of pints, Bonn Lair seems like a good place to go, especially if you happen to get one of the large wooden high back booths.

Like I said earlier, the bar is small and it faces a narrow hallway so not inconveniencing the patrons lucky enough to find stools at the bar and at the same time not blocking the hallway can make ordering a very awkward and most uncomfortable challenge.

They do not have a large selection of beers, ales, and ciders on tap but they have a fairly large selection in bottles. I would personally recommend the London Porter.

I don't know what I could possibly say that isn't already covered in the other 150 reviews, but why not throw my two cents in anyway?

Yes, this place is cool. Good vibe, pretty low-key. I drank Harp all night and it didn't break my bank. It's a little off my beaten path, but I'll be back when the mood strikes me.

The music they were playing was pretty bad, like...weird, joke music. Something about "cut the mullet" said in a screechy electronic voice. It was like Daleks suddenly took a few minutes from trying to destroy everything and focused on bad hair..."EXTERMINATE. EXTERMINATE."

This place is soo that!! Way cooler than that, it's that! The atmosphere is so friendly. And the best part....They only serve beer! It is a bit pricey, but it's also not the normal array of  domestic piss we drink so oftne. THey have lots of beers from Europe and the bartenders are happy to suggest a good one for your palet.

WE recently hafd a UYE here, for the Irish tacos! Only $1 each on monday nightys. But they were a slight let down, since I assumed they would have corned beef and cabbage, but they were regular beef and potato. Similar to a California burrito form Adelbertos. That not Irish!!!

Our bartender Elizabeth was really friendly and knowledgable in the brew selction. I will definatly start making this my new hangout spot. They have dart tournaments and trivia too! Good times.

What a great Pub! They have such a variety of beers to choose from it really makes you want to come back multiple times to try them all. The atmosphere is great, its in a good location - away from hectic downtown, so you can just bring your friends, grab a beer and some pretty decent pub food, and play some darts. Or go to trivia night! My favorite beers here are the Allagash White and the London porter. I tried a bunch more but, well, I had a few too many A.W.'s beforehand so I don't really remember which ones :) Anyways, its a very friendly atmosphere that usually brings in quality people and conversations. They also have a smoking porch outback for those in need...During trivia night and soccer matches it can get a little loud, but thats part of the fun

Yay: LOTS of beer, great prices, friendly everything, cozy atmosphere, darts!

Nay: The bathroom is in an awkward place - cramped next to the dart area, but hey, at least its clean!

As a bar, Bonn Lair has a lot to offer. It's got more of the cozy pub feel you'd imagine when walking in off the street for a pint in downtown London. The beer selection is one of the best you'll find in Sacramento, especially if you're looking for great English beers.

On the down side, Sunday trivia night pales in comparison to Streets of London, its English-themed competitor. While Streets' trivia has an engaging host and thought provoking questions, Bonn Lair's host bored me to sleep with easy pop culture questions delivered in a monotone. He literally drove me to drink, which I eventually concluded was the whole point of stretching 15 minutes worth of trivia questions out across two hours.

In conclusion, come for the beer, head to Streets for trivia.

This place deserves five stars. I came here the night of the yelp event since due to unforeseen, silly drama I decided I couldn't make it to this one.

To my delight I remembered that Sunday is trivia night. I forgot how much fun it is!! Delicious beer, amazing people, and fun trivia makes for a great night.

I deduct one star only because it is not my favorite bar in Sacramento and because they don't serve cocktails (though as Johnna B says, "it is what it is."

And, I think I will start to frequent this Swiss Chalet style pub more often so that it may rise to be my favorite (and so I can get my own stein). My friends would have my head if they knew I wasn't giving the full five stars as THIS IS their spot.

They're like two of 40 people that have their own steins hanging from the ceiling ... and I'm pretty sure some old bloat is going to have to kick the bucket before I even have a chance in hell of getting my own. Yes,  I was a bit jealous drinking from my regular old pint glass, with no fun tin lid to flip open.

The bartender was really nice, even before my Bonn Lair rockstar friends arrived. He was serving a couple of dudes sitting at the bar who were eh, a bit loud and obnoxious, but it didn't really bother me.

More than anything else (yes, they have an amazing selection of beer) I like this place for its trivia night. Mainly because I got an answer right. Yes, just one. This never happens. The answer was Water Displacement. Anyone know what the question was? I do. :)

I've had several cohorts tell me this is their favorite bar in town. While it's not my favorite, I will say it's quality. If you're looking for a good UK pub, then forget about Streets of London and hike the distance down here. They've got a better beer selection (with an excellent collection of steins to chose from), a tamer crowd and a pair of dart boards that you can actually play on without maiming an angry frat boy. Not as big, but that's usually not a problem.

Sunday nights provide a quality trivia night, if that's your bag of tea. If you're also a fan of rugby and futbol, then you won't be disappointed.

It's a fine place to grab a pint and discuss all things British.

For some reason I've avoided reviewing the Bonn Lair. Let's just say, the Bonn Lair and I have quite a bit of history. Some of it's good, some bad, but most of it is what it is.

When I turned 21, this was my favorite place. It's always been close to where I live, and as many of the other reviewers reported, the people are easy to talk to and nice (for the most part.) There are a few jack asses lingering about but it is fairly easy to tell them where to go once you figure out who they are. Just be careful, or you might soon be living a life you're totally unaware of, which is always creepy. You might want to develop a code name. I can help you with this.

I've gotten to know most of the bartenders as time has passed, and my favorites are Mike and Graham. Mike is one of the most down to earth people I know, and offers a unique perspective on just about everything. Graham is just Graham. Don't be alarmed if he yells at you, "Ladies and Gentlemen, get the hell out! Finish up your drinks then, we're closed!" This is just his way of telling you to get the hell out, the bar is closed. They're both one of a kind and have always been good to me, personally.

What's really special about the Bonn Lair is that it offers a superbly comfortable drinking environment, which is no doubt why it has such a huge following. When I was in college, this was my escape from the jerks I had to go to school with and take instruction from. People get drunk, but since there's no hard alcohol, they don't get out of control like they might at the Raven or at Cheaters (I've never seen anyone stand on the bar and take their clothes off, in other words.) The Bonn Lair is a pretty low-key place most of the time. I hashed out many a term paper topic here with people whom neither knew nor cared that they were helping me finish my term paper.

Now for what you came here for: Beer! They have one of the best beer selections in the county on tap, 365 days a year. They offer several standard wines.

My favorite time to come in is in the Spring, when the sun is out, after a long day at work. But get into the habit of that and soon every day at work is a hard day at work, if you catch my drift. If you need a quiet place to write something some afternoon, there are few better places than the Bonn Lair between 2 and 4 on any weekday. But sports dominate these hours on the weekend usually so make sure you know what day it is before you visit.

Although "it is what it is" might be the single worst thing to say in a review, that is exactly how I have to conclude this, my 100th review! It is what it is, and for the most part, it's a great place to relax and have a good time. But be careful who you talk to. There are some real haters up in here. It's always best to trust your gut. If someone's being too nice, retreat. Unless his name is Phil M. He REALLY is that nice.

My #1 choice for a cozy pub with great beer.  If you have never had Maredsous or Chimay then you must give them a try.  The menu is typical pub fare - the Shepherd's Pie is my choice for something that isn't too heavy.   Can be crowded inside and the bar is itsy-bitsy, so not a good place for a large group or a quick beer.

Their only fault is that they don't have Moose Drool, because it's American.  Darn elitists.  Head over to Luigi's Slice for the *best* American beer.  Oh yeah - no pitchers - so if you plan a night of beerage it costs a bit more than Streets.

One of the few places I actually LOVE in Sac.
I never get tired of it and better yet it never gets tired of me
I can spend a whole day (ok a whole overcast day) sitting on the tiny patio out front drinking
All of the bartenders are great and so are the owners.
I have a lot of great memories thanks to the Bonn Lair, and many of them are not fit for publication
I love the fact that its beer and wine only (Streets should have stuck with that formula)
I love the fact that you generally know some if not all of the people in there
I love the fact that you can still win the trivia when you're drunk (it's not as hard as Streets)
I love the fact that occasionally there are hot British guys there
I love the fact that its tucked away in East Sac but still easily accessible from downtown (walking distance that is)

The dense crowd wouldn't have bothered me so much if it didn't keep pushing me into the danger zone of the dartboard. Drunks + metal darts + my soft body = Not Good. Maybe if I bribed the guy throwing the darts, he could clear the crowd a bit so I could get a drink...

Given the heavy crowd, the 2 bartenders were doing a great job of serving up drinks and making change quickly. The Scottish decorations meshed well with the dark wood, creating a comfortable feel.

Nothing outstanding, but a solid bar for a pint.

Trivia: In Scottish, "lair" refers to a burial-plot in a graveyard. Maybe the restaurant name indicates that you'll go to that plot a happy person if you first have a night in the pub... :)

Trivia 2: No, you're not hallucinating. My original write-up was mistakenly about a different business I was at that night. What can I say; I was having a great time.

So Ive resisted reviewing the Bonn Lair based on what I thought was an already well established universal happiness with the place amongst the 40+ reviewers to cover this smashing bar.  My experience at the bar last week has forced me to chime in with yet another glowing review.

I saddled up to the bar with a coworker one afternoon after sneaking out of work a bit early and dove into to the always wonderful Alagash White. The coworker and I somehow drifted onto the subject of particle physics of which I knew little and he knew quite a bit from his days back in college. I was asking lots of questions in an effort to get my head around the concept and was assisted by the bartender in my quest who was something of an armchair expert herself.

That my friends is an example of the community one can find at a great neighborhood pub. You walk in sit down and launch into entertaining (time waisting) conversation only to be joined in by someone you don't know that adds to the fun. The Bonn Lair will remain my go to spot when the cubicle walls begin to close in and I need to escape this job.

What an awesome bar --- great vibe and amazing bears on tap.  It's a "come as you are" place that is welcoming and fun.  I've never gone here and not had a great time.

I guess this place is alright considering it's in Sacramento.  The person(s) reading these words might not realize that I'm from SF where the Irish/English pub was actually invented in the fall of 1983.  This place isn't a bad copy cat, but doesn't quite have that authentic SF feel to it.  I think it really lacked the pretentiousness that every bar that I've been to in SF has in abundance.

I was also shocked to find that the beer here is not all organic, free-trade beer that is mandatory for alcohol licenses to be granted in the 415 area code.  I guess people in Sacramento don't really care about the rest of the world --- thankfully, people like me (who are from SF) are supporting those that plant and grow the hops that form the base of every beer.

Maybe its not fair to review this restaurant now. i mean, lets face it... i went there for a Yelp event and i had a great time. i met cool people, the bartender and i made fun of some guy who packed a sad over the wait for French Fries and a hot chick bought me a Guinness. could life get better?  the answer, is only slightly.

Now, i have been a bar-fly of sorts for a long time, but the behavior i exhibited at the Bonn Lair warrants immediate correction. the best thing about the Bonn Lair is, that correction never came. Amen Bonn Lair. maybe one day  Name* and i will shenanigize your bathroom again with our drunken antics someday.

Name*, if you're reading this (and i know you are). i can't be held accountable for my actions after three guinni's... and after five you should run. so, the blame clearly lies on your head for my misbehaviors.

*names withheld to protect the not-so-innocent... in fact... guilty.

Sunday night is Trivia Night at Bonn Lair, but be prepared to stay a while.  I've been twice to their trivia night, so I can tell you it will be minimally three hours from start to finish if you are serious about this team trivia competition.

Beer on tap is a good selection of imports including Stella Artois, Bass, Affligem, Carlsberg, and then some.  I will steer you away from the Old Speckled Hen based on my own experience, although it could be that I'm a bit delicate when it comes to special British ales that require a separate nitrogen tap and taste like a bird's nest.  Let's just say that it led to some curious rumblings in my colon... and this internal monologue continued uninterrupted until the demons were cast out.

By the way, the trivia is strange and unusual and fun, so it is worth a try if you are so inclined.  Our team (Team D'Oh) won first place, which was a $20 bar tab for use anytime.  Second place was either a free bottle of wine or a round of four drinks.  Third place... I don't know what third place was, but I think it had something to do with David Hasselhoff's manly physique.
