There was a fundraiser here that included some dancing; since my gf is a dancer, we made plans to attend. Unfortunately I was on-call this week, and I'll just say that we had to leave late, and I had to take my laptop with me to the bar. We missed the dancing, but were starving by this time, so we decided to enjoy a couple of drinks and get some food.
The Good: Food was good; above average for bar food. I had the club sandwich with fries, and enjoyed it. The menu has a good variety of bar food and drinks.
The Bad: I was reminded of how long it has been since I played pool, and how terrible I am. It was pathetic. It took us an hour to play one game!
The Ugly: My gf who has never played pool beat me. :'(
We had a good time despite my on-call work. This is a great place if you are looking to play pool in Queens
Tip...Yelp deal has free hour of pool w/ purchase.
Manhattan, you can keep Fat Cat or whatever overpaid bar-with-games you go to. Break has tons of options for a really fun, casual night out where you can drink and usually not wait to play your favorite game, including:
pool
ping pong
air hockey
foosball
darts
Big Buck Hunter + other video games
basketball
...probably more that I'm forgetting but you get the picture. It's not ever that crowded and usually you won't have to wait long (if at all) to play a game.
Real kool venue with pool and pingpong and arcade games.
Real chill spot in astoria to relax, reasonable prices and plenty of room. Â They hav buy drink and free pool before 8 which is nice.
Nice large tvs. Â Sound here is weird with echo but TV's are on point. Â they also need to do somethin with air circulation, can get real hot in here.
I'd personally pass on the food, they do hav wings and burgers bar food etc. Â
Good spot to check out and chill w/ friends.
Impressive display of pool tables, not to mention foosball, air hockey, ping pong, and vintage video games - pretty much all you can wish for a night of hardcore gaming. Also great big screens for sports-gazing behind the bar, which itself lines up a good selection of beers. Everything is so spacious in fact - one of the advantages of Queens over Manhattan.
Review Source:Break is an awesome spot to chill out and relax without being subject to insane crowds. There are about a dozen pool tables, ping pong, and a bunch of other games to play, as well as a huge bar, long (20-seat) bench tables, and plenty of space to breathe. Our bartender (Janae) was awesome, and one of the friendliest I've met in NYC. Prime location right by the subway, and free pool most of (if not all) of the week between 12 to 8 as long as you're drinking. Great deal and even better atmosphere.
Review Source:Break is my GO TO bar in Astoria! Besides their awesome happy hour specials that come with free billards, their french fries are out of this world!!! way better than Pommes Frites! My friends joke that I'm the only one who goes just for their Idaho handcut french fries when everyone else is there for HH, trivia, the live entertainment, complimentary billards, etc LOL!
Review Source:If you are looking to "break" some sweat in either pool or ping pong, this is the spot. There is a sundry of pool tables available and you can't go wrong with a free hour of pool before 9pm. The bartenders are nice and the waitresses always hang around to make sure you don't see the bottom of your heineken bottle.
The ambience is great almost every evening with very mature individuals just looking for an exciting time out. It is also a great spot to catch games and is especially packed on Sundays during football season. I'd readily walk in here any day and I highly recommend.
Break is an awesome place to catch a game on TV, get a drink play pool/ping pong/other games, or play trivia. I think it's a great idea for a date place in the neighborhood. It's a huge, nicely decorated and much nicer than you'd expect going up the stairs above the fruit and vegetable stand downstairs. They offer food, but it's probably better to eat before or after you go there. I actually was at Break twice last week. The first time was on a weekend day to watch a Knicks playoff game. There were just one or two bartenders and the bar was pretty full. One of the bartenders/servers tended to just ignore anyone trying to get her attention most of the time. It took about 10 minutes just to get a beer, which was pretty annoying. One of my friends ordered food. After 25 minutes of waiting, his sandwich came out without fries. Instead of leaving it with us, she took the sandwich away. 15 minutes later, the sandwich came out with the fries, but my friend said the sandwich was just bad. The same day, the bartender told my boyfriend that there were specials on certain beers. When he got his check, the discounts weren't given. But he ended up just paying anyway.
I went back this week for trivia. It was a lot of fun, and we had a server who came right to our table. Unfortunately, they don't sell any of the desserts listed on their menu. This probably wouldn't be a problem for a lot of people, but my friend wanted dessert. Oh well. I'll definitely go back, but not for the food!
We used to be regulars at this place, especially on weeknights. We've been having issues with their bouncers on weekends - not letting in sober friends, accusing them of being too intoxicated after having zero drinks. They've told friends who have never been there before that they're banned because of "last time" and are not allowed in.
The bouncers have been extremely rude and hostile on these occasions. We've had to move birthday parties twice now and remove all of our friends - we will not be returning back here EVER. Plenty of other good places around.
So, we definitely did not pay for pool on St Patricks Day... honest mistake if we were supposed to!
The bar staff were pretty chill, the space is HUGE, very open, and everyone seemed to be having a good time.
If ever I am in the area looking to play pool or other games, this is my spot.
This was our Super Bowl spot. And it being the Super Bowl, meant I had to work while watching. Thank you to Jocy who allowed me to use her phone, #iphonefail #androidwin.
After watching a ridiculous sad quarter for the '9ers, the blackout, and Beyonce bouncing around, we started playing pool.
2nd half was way better and that last SF play there was holding.
Not bad... Â Usually pool halls are full of douch bags and bimbos but this place is alright. Â Most of the people there were normal, though the were a few scrupulous types. Â The beers were really inexpensive. Â It was a Saturday night and we were able to get a table relatively quickly, they had $4 coors light drafts, and even the food was relatively inexpensive and didn't taste bad at all. Â They also have foosball, air hockey, ping pong tables, and big buck hunter safari edition. Â It's like a guy-mecca!
I'd recommend for a fun night with guy friends or an established relationship, but definietely not first date worthy.
Love hanging out at Break. I'm not a big billiards person, but I love the air hockey and ping pong games. Their trivia night is awesome, and always packed. Happy Hour is M-F and they have great deals ($3 PBR, $4 Coors Light and $5 well drinks). Their food is also surprisingly good--I would recommend the popcorn chicken and onion rings.
Review Source:Shoot pool, drink craft beer, play air hockey, and watch some sports on tv all in a spacious setup.
This is the least grimiest pool hall I've ever been to. The food is actually pretty good (had bacon cheeseburger), the staff comes around often, and the beers change periodically. Free pool during happy hour clinches it.
Also, I've left my credit card here a few times and have had no problems getting it back. Big bonus. Wish it was open earlier though.
Good bar to go with a group to play pool, watch the game, play air hockey. It's not a place you go to to meet new people though, there's not much mingling or talking amongst strangers. Very spacious, nice bathrooms.
The food is good, especially the battered jalapeño slices, fries and onion rings. The chicken wings were nothing special.
My rum and cokes were small, weak, and thus pricey ($7). The shots were also small. And most of our drinks came in plastic glasses, not a fan of that.
What I found really annoying was that for some reason the night I went was the night of the Oscars, and they decided to actually play the sound of the show throughout the bar instead of playing music, or putting the sound on the Knick game. For the entire show. I mean, it's a pool hall/sports bar. I really wasn't interested in listening to the Oscars, it was an odd choice for the atmosphere.
I'll definitely be back, overall it's a fun place to go with friends and play some games.
This is a great place to chill, talk, drink, and play pool. Located right next to the Broadway stop on the NQ line, Break is the perfect place to wind down after a long day at work. The prices for happy hour (5-8) are excellent, with $2 PBR, $3 Coors Light, and $5 well liquor cocktails. ALSO, the best part of the whole deal is FREE pool during happy hour times!
A lot of the pools are unfortunately skewed and I had a hard time finding a good pool stick because they were all bent out of shape, but luckily there are like a hundred to choose from so you should be able to manage to find a good one. I ordered a Coors Light (which was not as cold as I would have liked, though it might have been because I was waiting for my friend to arrive before I drank it, so I won't count it against them) and the whisky sour I ordered was pretty good, though weak.
I played some miserable pool that day, but I think the tables are pretty solid and my whole evening was enjoyable. There are also a whole bunch of random other things like ping pong tables, basketball hoop game, air hockey, and an electronic shuffleboard among other things. Definitely is a chill place to bring friends and enjoy the evening if clubbing isn't your thing.
Also, the rates on the Thursday night I was there was AMAZING. I think $7 for an hour? I'm pretty sure the lady told me that it was $10 per hour, but whatever, thanks!
Love Break Bar! Great place to come and hang out after work for a beer or watch the game (if you're into that). Gets a little loud when there is a big game on so it may be hard to talk across the pool table for example. I also wish they had more ping pong tables too. Other than that, it's a fun, laid back place, and everyone is friendly, & none of the staff is pushy which I appreciate.
Review Source:Awesome place to grab some drinks + watch games, or just talk. Â Make sure to show up a little bit before the game starts, b/c it gets pretty crowded fast. Â The waitresses are super sweet. Â Food was pretty decent for bar food + drinks were hit or miss. Â Probably better to stick with beers.
Review Source:Free pool before 9pm everyday and $3 coors light. Â $4 buffalo wings on game days and they have amazing crispy hot french fries. Â I used to come here weekly when I lived across the street. Â It's a great chill spot to hang out. Â Not many people knew about it when I first started coming and you can tell it's starting to get crowded. Â They have 2 ping pong tables (~$12 an hour), about 15 pool tables (~$14-16 an hour after 9pm), a darts board, arcade basketball, fooseball table, and air hockey. Â Tons of tv's everywhere for you to watch the game and lot of room to sit. Â They recently added beer hall-like benches to the place, too.
Review Source:Not a thing wrong with this place. Free pool with purchase most times I've been there, cheap beer and wing special on NFL Sundays, friendly staff, and great draught selection.
This is the least NYC-like bar I've been to in the city. Second floor with tons of windows, seemingly endless green felt and billiard cues, ping pong, arcade games and hours of entertainment.
If you want to hang with friends and pass the time with endless games, this is your spot.
Break is a really nice joint. The Bartenders are nice, pool tables are easy to get and they have a large variety of games to play: Billiards, Foosball, Air Hockey, Basketball, Darts, Pong Pong, Video games and more.
We were there late on a sat night and a drunk girl started something with her group of friends. She was out of control and the bouncer corralled the group into a corner to control them. The drunk girl snuck out and on her way out, in her drunken stupor, decided to pick up a pool ball off our table and hurled it at us, hitting one of us. Then she took out a brochure rack and a box of pencils on the way down the stairs. It was like watching a movie in slowmo, yet it all happened so fast. She's lucky she didn't beam someone in the head. That was just vicious and stupid. Â We were comped a round of drinks but that girl needs help!
After pool, we shot some darts and overall had a great time. Cool spot, would definitely come back.
Great spot to chill and come hang out with friends.
WOn't be bored, with plenty of activities to entertain. Â They have multiple TV's and great spot to watch sports.
Food is mediocre at best, the sauce on the wings just isnt right. Â
But do have decent deals on beer and pool / ping pong / foosball etc
Never gets to crowded, & has unpretentious crowd. Â Pretty good service as well.
def a good time out if you're in the area.
After going multiple times I can now say this place really is great. The three times I've been here I've had a great time. You have so many things to do: Pool, Table Tennis, Buck Hunter, Darts, Basketball, Pacman, Air Hockey, Trivia Tuesdays with Picture trivia (awesome!). Did I say a full bar with a very sweet courteous bartender that makes the drinks real nice. Plus the prices are great: We had 5 drinks, chicken tenders, fried oreos, and 2 sodas and it all came to only $40. You can't go wrong with the Free Pool all night during their Happy Hour nights.
I asked the manager to put the Soccer Olympic event on the screen and he immediately went to grab the remote and searched until exhaustion until I realized I had the time wrong. He didn't even get mad he just apologized for not being able to find it. Very Nice People all around.
*EDIT- Went again on thursday night and As usual everyone all around was really nice and friendly serving us right away. The food was great, we ordered the chicken fingers, ceaser salad and the fried oreos (heavenly). After we ate my friends went to the restroom so I walked over to who I though was one of the employees there and sparked a cool convo about how the Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson fight got cancelled for Dan's knee injury and how Chael Sonnen was down to replace him to fight in 8 days. Only after I saw the concern he had about his customers coming to watch the fight and realizing it was cancel did I realize how great of an owner he was. He was very genuine in his appreciation for his customers and their comfort and happiness in his business. Even had a discussion about some exciting future plans he has for events. *Hope he follows through on those ideas they sounded exciting.
They've won a regular. I love this place and I'm gonna be going here often.
Been coming here a few times to play pool with friends. The buy a drink - free pool game is not a bad deal. And the drinks are not that expensive anyway.
Lot of pool tables here, a few ping pong tables as well as some gaming machines. Lot of tvs, this place is pretty big.
Came here once past the happy hour deal and paid to play pool for one hour, the hourly price wasn't so bad, but when we played only 5 minutes past the hour the girl at the bar charged us for 30 minutes over the hour we booked. Obviously didn't like being charged that much without being told first.
I have been going to Break for years, but finally got around to writing a review.
Their Happy Hour deal is great, from 4-8 you get free pool when you get a drink. That is an amazing deal in and of itself for anyone who likes a game of pool. The beer selection is pretty good but I steer clear of the mixed drinks, they seem a bit pricey. The food is likewise pretty good for a pool hall. Big burgers, enough variety to please anyone but not a gourmet hotspot.
They have trivia on Tuesdays, Street Fighter on every other Wednesday and Monday and Thursday feature their leagues.
Personally I find this place to be its best on weeknights for after work beers and pool. More chill than weekends and plenty of sports to watch without stepping on other peoples' feet.
This place is a total gem but easy to pass by, due to the fact that it's located on the second floor. I find the bar scene in Astoria to be one extreme to another - either a European dance hall, or a dingy dive bar. Don't get me wrong, I love the dingy dive bars, but sometimes a girl wants a little more.
Break is great because it is a classy billiards hall (along with foosball, air hockey, ping pong, and other adult games). The place is huge, and has tons of places for people to sit or stand, which is one of the core things I look for when going out - not a fan of the crowds. I found the service here to be top notch - the waitresses are very sweet and attentive. The one slight bummer of going here on a Saturday night was that they were out of a few favorite beers on tap. I decided to order a guinness and the pour almost made up for the lack of beer selection.
Will plan to go back with friends in the future and try the food, because I got real jealous of the people next to me who ordered wings.
I don't know what the deal is with the negative service complaints. The bartender and our waitress (Laura, I am pretty sure) were both great! Laura especially was super sweet; she hooked my friend up with a hot toddy whose honey came from one of the staff's secret stash.
We got a pool table without a wait around 9 on a Friday. The music was respectable 90's/2000s hits. And the atmosphere was fun. It's like being transported to someone's giant gameroom in the midwest: pretty awesome.
**I used my very first Yelp check in for an hour of free pool ($18 bucks savings!)**
I had me and my boyfriends double birthday party here last night! When i called to ask them about how to go about having a party at Break, the owner spoke with me and was super nice about everything. they said they would give us 2 pool tables with free pool from 10-12 and an area sectioned off for our party!
one disappointing thing once we arrived 30 minutes prior to the party starting...the waitress that helped us at first really didn't seem like she had any idea there was a birthday party scheduled to be there that night. She was somewhat rude to us when we tried to tell her there would be more people coming then we expected and we needed a decent space...meanwhile Break was no where near crowded at all and there were plenty of tables available with large couches next to them. Once we got that situated and we requested the table and area we wanted, everything started to get a little better!
Our waitress for the night was Maro and she was AMAZING. I was so glad she was the waitress for our party. she was so quick, friendly and never gave us a hard time! i really loved her!! She even made me and my boyfriend do "the nastiest shots ever" because she said she always makes the birthday people do it when she waits on them. She was on top of it and fabulous! So request Maro if you ever plan to host a party at Break.
All in all the night went great! I think they were satisfied with the amount of business our party brought them, they ended up letting us have the 2 tables for free pool the entire night. my crowd seemed to have a great time and I'm super happy with how everything turned out! I would definitely refer anyone to have their party here since theres so much space and not far from the city! We really had a blast last night ! Thanks Break!
It was a pretty cool place overall but there are a few things that were left to be desired. Â First off the service was pretty bad in general. Â There was a server for our table but she would only check in on us (about 8 or so) every 20 minutes some times more. Â When we first got there we went 30-45 minutes without our server being around to the point that I had to go up to the bar to her to order another beer. Â I would have no problem going up to the bar for each drink but it had been established that we were getting served.
Another one of my issues is that bothered me was there seemed to be no system to keep people from holding a pool table all night. Â It seemed that if you didn't grab a table before it got busy you were stuck waiting until everyone left before getting onto a table. Â If they are considering themselves a pool hall then people shouldn't have to wait very long to get onto a table. Â My friends and I felt like we shouldn't even try due to the time people were taking on tables. Â
Overall it was a bit uncomfortable a place because we were sitting on a picnic like table. Â The prices were fair considering where we were. Â I don't know many places where I can get a draft beer for a better price then what they had.
I think the place had potential, it can be a really cool place but I would not suggest it for any time you would expect them to be busy. Â They did have plenty of tvs to watch what ever sports game was on. Â Maybe I just caught the place on a bad night because I could see this place being a good one.
um..so I've been here twice. The first time was a few years ago for a friends birthday. We had a good time, It was super cool because her roommate had brought a pinata, and the staff was cool enough to string it up from the ceiling. They also found a broom stick for us to use to hit said pinata. The server was attentive and they were cool about us bringing our own sweets to celebrate. I remember a male bartender being super nice.
remember...this was probably 2 years ago.
Then I went to Break again last night for a different friends birthday. There were no longer couches so we sat at a long picnic-like table. The boyfriend and I came a little later than everyone else, but as soon as we sat down the server was there offering to get us a drink, We asked her to give us a minute, and after 20 minutes or so, BF suggested we just walk to the bar, no biggie. The bartender seemed pleasant for the most part. When we got back to the table, my friends informed me to order from the server because she gets pissed when we walk up to the bar. Okay, understandable, because we are lowering her check average by not ordering from her. I get it. Sorry.
But then some of us wanted to order food...oh, server....where are you? Nowhere to be found. I look around the section...she had us, the huge table of 8-10 people and a two top...I give her some credit, maybe she has more guests over by the pool tables. eh, okay. But at least check in on us. Annoyed, my friend goes to the bar to order food, and then 20 minutes later gets reprimanded by the server for not ordering from her. Well, chippy, if you came around once and a while maybe we'd order from you. I give her another shot, and I order food from her...chicken fingers...and fries please. The fries never showed up, cool. But then again once we paid our tab, they weren't on there. So perhaps she couldn't hear me. Two item orders are difficult...
At this point I'm kind of fed up. So I go to the bar to get some water, The bar has maybe 4 people sitting at the end, Bartender leaves her conversation and comes down to greet me. Sets down a coaster, I ask her for two waters. please. I receive silence. a glare. then two waters, no straws. I say thank you. silence. She walks away. The dollar in my wallet, stays in my wallet. Yes, I usually tip for water or even a diet coke. Thanks for being a bitch.
Now, I'm done. I'm done with Break. Bye Break. Bye. Good thing I'm not a pool shark because I highly doubt I will ever step foot in this place again. My friends were all equally disgusted. A few of us played air hockey, it was to busy to play pool or ping pong. But this review isn't about the billiards or the games. It's purely about the service.
The bathrooms are also disgusting. Do people perform restroom checks in this place? doubtful.
