I met a friend for a few drinks prior to another meeting on Monday evening.
This place was quiet to start and then progressively got busier as the evening progressed. Â We had a few beers over the course of an hour or so. Â They have a very nice beer selection to chose from. Â I really wanted to partake in their menu, Pakistani and classic British Pub food. Â Maybe on the next visit with more time and an emptier stomach I'll decide to partake in the excellent menu. Â
Our Bartender, and cute little blond was absolutely stupendous and I may come back to see her again. Â It was like being with family and I love that at a local bar.
HH prices are on point and this place is definitely a contender for one of my favorite HH locations in the future.
Another fun Wednesday evening with the book club in a place I probably wouldn't otherwise have visited (I'm not a beer drinker or much of a soccer fan). Â This authentically English pub is comfortable and homey, slightly dim without being too dark. Â It's obviously a well-loved neighborhood watering hole. Â I was delighted to find plentiful and easy free parking close by.
I can't comment on the beer menu, except to say that it's conveniently located on the napkin holders atop the tables. Â I opted for the $5.00 chardonnay (your one and only choice of CK Mondavi) and my glass was filled to the top. Â Hmmm, they must know me. Â Of course, there is also a selection of spirits.
The food menu is a collection of the usual American and British pub fare plus an offering of Pakistani dishes. Â I was game to try one of those but leery of the curry flavors. Â Our absolutely amazing server (sadly, I didn't get her name, but she has short blonde hair and glasses and is originally from Ohio; don't ask me how I know that but don't know her name!) helped me chose the Chapli kebab salad. Â The kebabs are made with minced ground beef and spices and look sort of like flat seared sliders. Â They were so flavorful and had a nice spicy kick to them. Â The lettuce in the salad was fresh and tasty. Â The only veggie was tomatoes but it really didn't need anything else. Â The salad came with sides of the tamarind sauce and cilantro chutney, both of which I enjoyed but the cilantro chutney was my favorite of the two. Â I also had a bite of the chicken masala and it was surprisingly not too heavy on the curry. Â I would not be afraid to order it next time.
So if you seek a friendly pub to remind you of Merry Old England, whether for a rowdy soccer match or for a quiet pint and some dinner, you will find it at British Bulldog.
This pub couldn't be any better; the boyfriend loves it for the soccer and I love it for the Pakistani food. I have only been a few times early in the morning, but I crave the breakfast burrito! Chapli kabobs with potatoes wrapped in a bhurta/tortilla hybrid with cilantro and garlic chutney... Ummm, hi. I am starving now... So good! Pair that with some Chelsea supporters and a Bloody Mary and I'm a happy girl.
Review Source:In America, you really have to go find a soccer bar. Â They aren't that common.... and if you like the beautiful game, it's vital that you find your local footie bar.
I wasn't too crazy about the service. Â I stood almost the entire match with no beverage. Â I wasn't rude to the staff.... I just stood there trying to make eye contact whenever a bartender came to my end of the bar. Â I made eye contact a couple times.... but I guess a guy standing with no drink doesn't convey the message in this bar. Â Their loss. Â I was happy watching the game.... but felt like I was getting one over on the bar by not buying any drinks or food.
Recommend.... you have to hang on to your local soccer bar, so you gotta make do.
This is Denver's soccer bar. Dont waste your time at the Three Librarians (oops I mean Lions) or fado.
The Bulldog opens early for weekend soccer matches. Especially for the Chelsea FC fans. The Rocky Mountain Blues come out strong for even the 6am matches. There are alot of other supporters that show up here too, so dont shy away! The bar gets especially rowdy for big matches...probably the most fun I have ever had in a bar was the Champions League Final in 2012 here. Packed to the gills with Bayern and Chelsea fans..you would think you are in Europe!
The Bulldog does the pub style right. Not only do that have great pub food (fish n chips, burgers, etc), they have AMAZING Pakistani/Indian food. Seriously..its good. I know this may confuse some but in England its very common. Try the masala its awesome. They also have a very good cheesesteak. If you come for an early soccer match worry not...the breakfast is awesome too.
The have some pretty good lunch and happy hour specials too. My favorite is coming in for a lunchtime Champions League match on masala Wednesdays. $7.99 for the masala and a drink. The service here has always been great too, Matt kills it on the bar at 6am!
Everyone has a secret place they go to retreat after a long day's work. For me, it's the British Bulldog.
It's located just far enough from anything to be labeled as a dive, but with enough character to have it holds its ground. The place has an old-UK feel right from the get-go, soccer games blaring on the screens, and a chill patio on-looking... pretty much nothing.
But the secret here isn't the location or the lack of beautiful mountain views, it's the inconspicuous Pakistani food menu. If you're into spicy food, you're going to have to take the challenge here.
Grab the slow-cooked lamb or chicken tikka masala. Either option will test your limits on what 'spicy food' truly is (and they don't hold back the portions either). If you manage to finish your dish without drinking half a gallon of water, don't expect any nods of approval from anyone around you. Just know that you've taken in one of the most simple, blissful experiences Denver has to offer.
What I had? Â Aloo Goshi Salin (traditional lamb & potato curry, slow cooked for four hours until tender... extra spicy!) and Chips and Curry
Food review: Â I was brought in here by curiosity from my last visit here when I only did drinks. Â Pakistini food in an British pub, eh? Â OK, gotta try it out! Â :-) Â So came in here for lunch. Â Started out with the chips and curry. Â The curry was a bit different than I expected it to be (more of a chili variety) but that ended up turning out pretty well. Â Had a little zing to it as well which I would find out really soon that that would be the theme for the rest of my meal. Â Starting digging into the aloo and oooff... was it ever spicy but tasty never the less. Â The rice that came with it wasn't as spicy but it had a zing to it as well. Â The meal also came with flatbread which had a really nice texture to it and complemented the aloo nicely. Â Overall, BB was a very nice surprise for me. Â I was really impressed of the quality of my meal for it being a pub.
Service? No complaints
I'm a big fan of their saag paneer plate. Their fish and chips seems to be a favorite but I wasn't impressed with it. Then again, I seem to have gotten the ass part of the fries in my fish & chips order. The fish was decent- goldent and crispy- and so were the chicken tenders buffalo style.
The staff is very attentive and pretty social. Dave is cute. AND......
I can watch Rugby. Yay!
I like weird places. You know..British pubs that serve surprisingly good Pakistani food. A downtown bar where white-collar mixes with blue. A dingy bar that has hand painted murals on the back of its seats.
British Bulldog is weird. But in a mostly good way. I like the draft selection, especially since it's one of the few bars in town that has Strongbow on tap. It has really good service. The food is a bit expensive, but definitely tasty. I love the kabob with the spicy sweet tamarind chutney. The fish and chips are also good, though I'd wish they were a bit more generous with the cole slaw.
The menu is wonderfully bizarre with Greek, Pakistani, Indian, English, American and southwestern dishes all included.
But as an old fast-food commercial said, "Weird is different. And different is good."
Based on the beer only... For now.
Wondered in one night looking for a good English atmosphere. Â Felt more like a NYC type bar than an English Pub. Â As for the beer, the "Carlsberg" was not so much a Carlsberg. Â I was pretty excited to see a Carlsberg draft, but sadly I think they had the wrong keg hooked up to the tap because I Def got some kind of cider instead. Â
Nonetheless, I will come back to give the food a try and the beer another go. Â Especially for the Euros this summer!
For all the skeptics out there.....the British are actually very well know for having great Paki food. Â
This little hole-in-the-wall is great. Â Hilarious people watching with a pleothora of new material.
Is anybody else on Yelp also a fan of the website The Chive? Â If so please go by the women's restroom and see the sign they have on the door. Â "Mind the Gap" Â If you're a Chiver you know what I'm talking about!!
I went with the chicken masala for dinner and it was great. Â Just the right amount of heat and not overloaded with potatoes but actual pieces of chicken. Â
I shall be back on a Saturday morning to watch some soccer...err, football and have a proper English breakfast.
Oh Bulldog, I'm so sorry I haven't reviewed you earlier. I know I've been a semi-regular of yours for years and you are one of my favorite bars in all of Denver, but... well... I'm afraid other people will realize how awesome you are and I'll lose my favorite table. Pakistani food + good beer list + dark + gloomy + hidden corners = awesome.
I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you somehow. Forgive me?
Tip: Skip the British food and go straight for the Pakistani dishes. I recommend the samosas and chicken masala.
Holy Fish and Chips! Â I came in for lunch with a few friends and to catch the first half of a couple soccer games. Â The beer selection was pretty alright, but I was a little disappointed that they didn't have more local brewed craft beer. Â I was able to get a Titan IPA which was very tasty. Â
I ordered the fish and chips and they were some of the best I've ever had. Â The fries were okay, but the fish was very, very good. Â The plate had two 10" long planks that were well-battered and cooked just right. Â My friends all got the chicken masala, which was very spicy, but good. Â I don't think I could manage a whole plate of the stuff.
Everyone seemed attentive to the soccer games and reacted to the them accordingly, which really added to the atmosphere.
We came to the British Bulldog for curry. That's right. Curry. It definitely satisfied my England Pub flashback needs but fell a little short on my curry needs. Hot Mike had been wanting to take me as we've both spent a lot of time in English pubs in our lives and he remembered the curry being awesome.
Apparently they've remodeled since he was last there and some of the awesome intimate booths have been converted into more tables. I ordered curry and he ordered greek style something....My curry was okay. Not awesome, not terrible. We were so hungry that it tasted really good at first but then that, "oh wait, this is just bar food" moment hit.
There are a ton of awesome beers here and football (aka soccer) games on all the time so it'd be a great place to go and grab a beer and watch a game.
This place wasn't half bad! Â I went there for the first time a few weeks ago for trivia, and all in all I was impressed.
-Waitstaff was attentive, friendly, and good.
-Menu seemed diverse
-Trivia was audible and not overcrowded.
It will be an interesting place to check out in the future without the lure of trivia!
They pour a proper pint of great English beers which include my much loved Boddington's and Fullers (no more Tetley's).
Weekend mornings here are a blast regardless of your love of football....err soccer. Â However it is a little quieter here now that Three Lions has opened but that does little to dampen what a great place the Bulldog is. Â Actually, it makes service quicker and more attentive which is great as with the larger crowds this often became a problem.
C'mon you Gooners.
I love the British bulldog, I'm always looking for British pubs to curb my home sickness, and this one is excellent!
It really bothers me though how people I know get freaked out that there's Pakistani food on the menu and complain to me that it's not English. What they fail to realize is that many of us Brits grew up with Pakistani food in the same way that you Americans grew up with your taco bell and other such Mexican foods.
It's wonderful comfort food and not weird at all!
Love this place. They open early weekend mornings for premier league matches, and even serve breakfast! English breakfast = good.
Their food tastes great, nothing you would expect a bar to serve. I ordered their chicken masala for dinner and it was far better than any i've had at indian restaurants in san jose.
Beer selection is your regular deal. Nothing high or low.
Nice staff, friendly owner.
I have to drive all the way from Fort Collins to get to this place, and I still think it is worth it on gamedays.
I am going to start out by saying that I like the British Bulldog. I think they have a great selection of beers on tap, and I like them even more when they are not out of Strongbow. I think their Pakistani food is really quite tasty. I wish there were more options in that particular category, but the few dishes they have are spot on. And it is, in fact, a great place to watch soccer.
The deficit in my rating comes really from three things:
1) I think their drink prices are a touch high
2) Their service has been good, but it can be a little spotty some nights, too.. Charmless or even terse may be better words. I am actually referring to one person's service actually. The others were very nice and attentive.
And lastly ( I admit this might be nit-picking a bit, but I'm passionate about it),
3) Their chips are not "right". They are limp, little greasy things and all wrong... and their curry chips are $5.95?! Â Here's what they need to do: Stop using an eggplant curry (which was WAYYY to garlicky anyways), use a cheaper one and fix your curry chip situation because that much for curry chips is beyond me.
That being said, I can't stay too mad at a bar that serves Tetley's on tap.. I will next time avoid the curry chips and re-review.
This place is legit to watch soccer. Gotta love that opened at 5am for the World Cup Matches. Lots of classic english beers on Tap. Knowledgeable soccer fans. Chanting & Singing and beer goes everywhere when they score a Goooooooalllllllllll.
Had a breakfast burrito that hit the spot. Staff is prompt and friendly.
PROs: Legit Futbol Bar, Great service
Cons: Prepare for madness when someone scores!
6 stars!
I would consider moving to Denver to visit this pub regularly.
A bit tacky on the exterior with the touristy union jack awning, but once you get inside it's a cozy pub with interesting painted booths, a large bar and soccer flair everywhere.
It just so happened that a Liverpool soccer match was on TV at the time we entered, so we were at home instantly. Â We were immediately greeted by a lovely gal named 'Brooke' who gave us wonderful service. Upon glancing at the menu, I was floored! The range of Indian/Pakistani and English delicacies had my head spinning. What to order??
My friend and I started with the Punjabi chicken wings. Gooooal! THE best tasting wings I've ever had. Thick with a sweet and hot flavor, yet not like anything you'd find in an average winghouse. These wings were TRANSCENDENT! These flavors don't exist in the American taste palette. I'd love to figure out how they made that sauce. Hmmm
For a main, I went with the Chicken Masala at Brooke's recommendation. I could not have been more pleased. One of the best Indian dishes I've had. And mind you, we're sitting in a pub, not an Indian restaurant. The heat index was perfect for me, and the flavors were rich yet I wasn't smacked in the face by the spices. Just perfect.
Dave had the Bangers and Mash, a classic Engish dish. He couldn't believe how authentic the bangers were. Being from England he told me that's how they taste "over there". I have to admit, they were unlike any other sausage I've ever had. Light and very tasty.
John, the manager of the pub came by to greet us and spark up convo about soccer as he could see we were into it. He invited us to become regulars in the bar and to attend local soccer matches (The Rapids) with other pub enthusiasts. He also gave us info on local league play which was highly useful information for us.
The visit could not have gone any better. We enjoyed a soccer match, had unbelievable food at a reasonable price, had attentive service and met the bar manager who was kind and welcoming.
My new neighborhood bar - I likey!
It's 2 blocks from my house.
HH is from 10a-noon, and 3-7p -yes I said 10a (hello!)
Half price beers and wine - need I say more.
And they play Euro football (soccer) all day long. The schedule for the week always available even if they aren't quite open at 5:30 a for the European games. It's awesome.
The bar staff is funny and cool - it's a real chill environment. Perfect for an after work beer or a weekend mid-day cack-tail.
The menu has a decent amount of variety with some surprising Pakistani fare. I'm just sayin'.
The old wood style and detailed booths are really charming and the patio makes me crave summer already (and it just started smowing).
Cool cool - do it!
I used to frequent this place a lot when I lived nearby but hadn't been in a while. Went last night and was pleasantly surprised with free bingo games and moist marker bingo stamper deals.
Also they have a lot of scrump beer from across the pond on tap.
Service is better than the last time I went and we won some totally useless junk at bingo. Yay!!!!
Sidenote- they have this thing called the "10 pints Club" I don't really remember all the stipulations but you drink 10 beers and end up with a cool free shirt when all is said and done.
This could be your typical British pub, understated, dimly lit and running the border of dingy. Â I could have walked in here for a pint, left and never looked back.
Then, I fell in love.
It's like they say. You never know when true love will strike. I ordered the lamb and potato Pakistani dish (a long time favorite, easy to find but hard to perfect). Â It was like a symphony in my mouth. I ate every little bit and if I hadn't been so full I wouldn't contemplated ordering more. Â I would go back for this alone.
There are cool murals painted on the booths and the service is prompt enough, though our server sometimes looked at us as though we were speaking another language when asking complicated questions such as "what kind of spiced rum do you have?"
Also, the trivia nights here are very competitive and quite fun.
This is a nice dimly lit place to have a few pints of your favorite British beer AKA Boddington's, which they have on tap. Â Probably the most redeeming quality is the very comfortable high-back booths that are great for having really good conversations for up to 4 people. Â
They've also got a strange multi-level thing going on where you have to walk up to the next half level to go to the bathroom. Â So don't drink too much or you might fall down the stairs on the way back from the restroom. Â
It may have just been a bad night but service was very slow on a Monday.
My new favorite bar in all of Denver. Â Maybe in all of everywhere.
British Bulldog, how do I love thee? Â Let me count the ways...
I love the fish and chips. Â The batter is delicious, and they're not too greasy but of course greasy enough to be delicious. Â The chipotle tartar sauce is just spicy enough to make it awesome.
I love the burgers. Â Juicy and flavorful with fresh vegetables, if you're going to splurge calories on a burger, you want it to taste like this.
I love the selection of beers. Â Good selection on tap, there will be something there you want.
I love the happy hours! It seems like there's always something on special.
I love the service. Â Friendly, quick, not an ounce of too-cool.
I love the funky booths with the painted forest scenes.
I love that the bathroom was surprisingly pleasant for a bar.
I love the little patio with its perfect, unobstructed view of Coors field and its fireworks.
I love that they have a theme, especially because I love dogs and think bulldogs are adorable.
I love the free bingo on Wednesdays!
And finally I love that they play football games. Â That's soccer to you Americans. :)
Edited to add:
They don't do bingo anymore, but they do have an Adult Spelling Bee every third Thursday! Â Adult as in...for grown-ups, not rated X. :)
Another week has gone by and it was time for a new GWD location. Located a bit north of downtown, I found it to a new change from the places I have been going to lately. No crowds on the streets nearby and a nice group of people inside. I felt very comfortable upon my arrival. I have been to plenty Irish pubs, but this was my first time at an English pub. Other than decor, I can't say that I see too much of difference.
The seats of their booths have high backs so it keeps you and your group of friends apart from the rest of the bar. Although you can still feel what's going on with the people behind you as the backs were not solid and you could feel every bump. A little annoying especially if you are about to take a drink. Otherwise it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.
I had not ate yet so I took a few minutes to look a their menu. A the typical bar food could be found as well as a couple of speciality foods, Pakistani food, which I had never tried before. I just recently had food from that region, Greek and I feel in love with it. I settle on the Greco-Indian sandwich, with an openfaced pita with chicken, bacon, tomatoes, feta, lettuce and other things that escape me at the moment. It came with "chips" which were not the variety that I have grown accustomed too at bars and restaurants here in Denver, their chips were actually plain ol' french fries. In addtion to the pita and fries, we had two dipping sauces.
Now normally I would NEVER have eaten this and it has to do with the fact that I don't like like leafy vegetables. They just really... ugh... don't like them. But something in me told me to just get the damn lettuce. So I did. And you know what? I spit it out as soon as it touched my tongue. Okay, not really. I ate it and I liked it. The sandwich was very different from anything I have ate before. All it's parts worked well together and I really enjoyed my meal. I might not ever try it again as my desire to get lettuce would probably not be there. However there were other items that I really want to try.
The service was on par for a GWD night. So far most of the bars we've been to seem to be a bit under staffed for trivia and the results are long waits and moody wait staff. On one hand I can sympathize about how much they must go through and on the other, I just want my beer (or in the case of our on of our teammates, tea.) in a timely fashion.
In the end, I could see myself stopping in for another round of trivia, but would have to think about going on my own for a night of drinking.
If you had asked me to describe Pakistani food prior to my eating that the British Bulldog I would have been at a loss.
I would have guessed that it was middle eastern, but I would be wrong.
Pakistani food is like Indian food's really sexy cousin.
I had the pleasure of eating at the Bulldog last night and I was blown away.
My first experience with Indian food was with Little India's all you can eat buffet and I don't think that was a fair first shot at Indian food if Pakistani food is anything to go by.
The plate presentation is beautiful to start off with, whoever they have cooking back there obviously understands how important it is for your food to look good in order to complete your dining experience.
I ordered the Chicken Masala.
The nan was beautiful, it was hot, and it was delicious.
The tomatoes that they cut up and sprinkled over my chicken and basmati rice were perfectly cubed, fresh, and juicy.
The lovely waitress told me that the masala would be slightly spicy, and she was right. It wasn't too hot, it was perfectly complementary to the large pieces of chicken and potatoes which were interspersed in the rice.
The cup of mint sauce was a fantastic balance to the heat of the masala, I only wish there had been more of it because my mouth was on fire by the end of my meal.
The portion size was very fair as was the price.
The wait staff is super friendly, and they aren't that hard on the eyes - just in case you're into that kind of thing. (Pretty, polite blondes that bring you alcohol and delicious food)
The atmosphere is pure british pub, from football on the tellies (There are at least 4 if not more), to framed jerseys, to a great selection of british beer on draught.
The British Bulldog is a really fun night out.
This bar has that certain something about it that I can't quite put my finger on, but makes me really like it. I just love the feel of it - dark and intimate, not really cozy, but comfortable in its own way. The booths that you sit in are awesome. Each of the backs have paintings on them as does the wall next to you. So, you feel like you're in a secret little alcove. And I love the wallpaper and painting of the lady with a mustache (mustache not by original artist) in the girl's room.
The beer selection is good, although they ran out of Irish Stout tonight. The food, too, is a nice mixture of appropriate bar food (hello mac and cheese wedges), British food (Bangers and Mash, anyone?) and Pakistani food (I'll not try any of these names because my memory and spelling would be embarrassing.)
All in all, I could see myself hanging out here watch a little futbol. You know if I did that sort of thing with any regularity. As it remains I'd come back for Geeks Who Drink trivia any week.
As Bryan mentioned in his review, we stopped by this place on our way to a Rockies game. Â We didn't have any food....just some frothy adult beverages. Â
I really liked the atmosphere of the place. Â Seemed exactly like what I suspect a true British Pub to look like (although I've never been to England.....yet). Â Cool bartenders...chill customers...and 2 for 1 beers. Â Can't get any better than that. Â I believe happy hour is every day from around 4 to 7pm. Â The menu looked promising, so we definitely will be back to give that a try. Â Overall, a great little pub to grab some beers on a hot and sunny afternoon in downtown Denver.
Came here last night with some friends for some food and brews. Â I had a good experience, but I probably won't go out of my way to come back here.
Our server was a little interesting and not very attentive, but we weren't in a hurry so it was ok. Â They didn't have Boddington's on draught any more (despite it still being on the menu), so Tetley's cream stout was an acceptable substitute!
The menu is a good mix of British pub food and Pakistani food. Â We started with some samosas, which were excellent! Â Large portions and nice and spicy. Â I ordered the Peshawari chicken, which is served with some very nice brown basmati rice with veggies, and four slices of pita. Â The rice and pita were very good, but the chicken was EXTREMELY salty. Â It had sat in the marinade way too long. Â Don't get me wrong - I still at half of it because I was hungry, but if I was at a normal restaurant, I would have sent it back and ordered something else.
The bar was dead (TVs not playing anything, only 4 or 6 other people in there), and we wanted a little more action, so we moved on to The Thin Man (yaaaay) after we had finished our dinner and our beers.
So for me - not bad, not great. Â It's not on my list to return, but if someone suggested it, it would be fine by me.
4 stars for one reason only, I didn't have any food. Â I will be back and I will be eating, so look for an update soon.
Lacey and I walked in on a hot 95 degree Friday evening to a mostly empty bar. Â Holiday and Rockies and such. Â We parked near here because its $2 even on game days and I usually need the 6 block walk to either feel less guilty about stuffing my face, or to determine my ability to drive home. Â If I feel even slightly tipsy, its cab time baby!
The bartenders were congenial and entertaining. Â The Tetley's Cream Stout was amazing, and their happy hour is 2 for 1. Â They give you the tokens like the Park Tavern... I love that.
To quote the governor of California, "I'll be back."
As authentic a Brit bar as you're gonna find in Denver, British Bulldog is a nice little alternative to both chad bars and dark hipster dens. What I really love about the Bulldog is this: Pakistani food.
As I've mentioned before, all real British bars have a good curry or other Asian Subcontinental goodies  on the menu next to the fish and chips. But British Bulldog's specifically Paki inclinations bring us a killer spicy Kebab meat (ground lamb and beef flavored with pomegranate and garlic) and hot marinated chicken. The standard bar fare is good, too, with fried pickle spears that are as delicious as they are surprising.
The four stars isn't five simply because they only have Boddington's in cans, and they don't have a single cider on tap (Helloooo, British bar? It takes more than BBC sport on the telly to provide authenticity). But between the cozy atmosphere and really delicious Pakistani food make this a cool little hideout away from both downtown and the Cap Hill crowd.
