Despite the advice to NOT go here, Mr. Bs proved to be exactly what I was looking for...a place to watch a playoff hockey game.
We were there a bit before it got bumpin' and left before 11PM so it wasn't particularly crowded and we were able to get a couple drinks just fine.
The crowd is a bit random, but friendly enough.
I'm really surprised by the reviews on yelp. I've been here a handful of times and I've always a good experience. Really like their burgers and of course the waffle fries. Their chili is pretty good too. I usually go there for lunch or late afternoon when it's not busy so I never had any problems with the service.
Review Source:We happen to be near Royal Oak and after visiting their Farmer's Market, we decided to have lunch at Mr "B's" on Main Street. Â Â It's your typical sports bar, but I can see it being a popular "hangout" in the evening and weekends, especially for the "bikers" that love the Royal Oak Downtown area. Â Â For lunch my wife ordered the Sizzlin' Fajita with steak and chicken. Â Â The iron griddle was red hot and they were very generous with the steak and chicken. Â Â It was an excellent choice. Â Â I had their two piece Fish and Chips Dinner which I could not finish so I took the rest home. Â Â It was pretty good, but then again . . . how can anyone screw up and order of "fish and chips". Â Â Overall, a very good restaurant and if I was younger; a good place to hang out and have a beer
Review Source:So, I got a $10 coupon in the mail after moving to Royal Oak to dine here. Â Despite of its low rating on yelp (which otherwise would have convinced me to never come here), I went against my better judgment and went for dinner.
The food was really gross. I ordered a turkey burger while my boyfriend ordered the steak fajitas. My turkey burger was dry and looked too gray for me to eat past my third bite. My boyfriend's entree was a pretty generous portion. Â However, the beef tasted rotten. I can't even explain it, but some pieces of beef tasted fine but other pieces had an offputting taste. This is really one of the few times at a restauant where I left more than 75% of my food uneaten and did not box it for later.
Seriously, one of my worst meals out. Â I really do not recommend coming here for the food. Â Drinks only, then fine, but never for the food alone. Â I guess this is what I get for going against yelp!!
I hate this place. Crowd here all seem to be from out of town. To take advantage of these morons, drinks are watered down and sold at a significant premium.
Food is generic and cheap - no originality. Standard bar fare of fries, burgers, and chicken fingers. Overpriced by about 25% IMO.
Most of all I just hate the setup. I feel like punching someone in the face every time I walk past their sad excuse for a dance floor. Bouncers think they're hard - you've been warned.
We came here for one purpose: trivia. Â
Were our expectations met? Yes. Â
Would I return for anything other than a few beers and trivia on a Tuesday night? Absolutely positively NO.
We had been wanting to scope out a trivia night nearby, and although I gave a slight cringe when I found out that Mr. B's has one, I couldn't argue with how close it was to us, and how much easier it was to go here rather than schlep out to Livonia. Â So, we commenced on our 2 minute journey to Mr. B's. Â
We (beau, myself, bestie) had eaten beforehand, except that I had made a pretty gross chicken salad (thanks for wasting my leftover chicken, Ina Garten), and while BF ate it, I had a few bites and pushed it aside. Â I was hungry. Famished. Â And for some reason, chicken fingers were lookin' pretty good after a few sips of my beer. Â So we ordered the app sampler for a whopping $11. Â It seriously wasn't worth $5. Â I usually find alternate ways to describe less than desirable food, but I really can't say anything else except that their potato skins were disgusting. Â The mozz sticks were just weird. Â The chicken fingers were okay enough, but I could get the same thing from Arby's, only cheaper. Â I also find it strange that they have a whole slew of crappy beers, but no beer list. Â And not ONE MI beer, not even in a bottle. Â After our waitress belted out the list of crap-o beers, I recognized only Blue Moon and Guinness out of the things I would actually drink. Â And those were the two I ordered. I will say that their beers are in a huge tumbler... not a pint glass, but like a monster sized pint glass, and the size of the glass reflects in the ridiculous price. Â Almost $7 for Guinness? Are you f-ing kidding me, Mr. B? I believe Blue Moon was the same price too. Â
This is not an eating joint; I would never go out of my way to go and eat at Mr. B's. Â I also do not want to ever witness the club crowd that I've seen flocking here on the weekend. Â But, for weeknight beers, trivia, and pool... yeah, I'll hit that.
Put me in the category with the other Yelpers  who came here for lunch and had great service and food. Reading other reviews here, it looks like there's something weird going on at dinner time. That, or the only "bitters" the bar has are its customers.
I had a patty melt here that was extremely good, but overcooked. If you're going to ask me how I want my burger cooked, please deliver it that way.
Refills were perfectly timed. Our waitress was awesome. I seriously have no complaints other than the overcooked meat.
I can't wait to come back for Tuesday Trivia.
Good Day All:
I really do not understand how this could have the good ratings that it does here. Â Food was "Meh" at best. Â And the bar does not have any bitters, really none? Â There were not a lot of people here and not a lot going on. Â Was not where I wanted to go and will not be where I go in the future.
Best regards, Tony
Mr B's mascot, the ceiling dust bunny. Â People, you have time before you open, grab the big ladder & dust, specifically by the vents that blow air on our food. Â That being said, Lisa our server was nothing if not nice. She stayed on top of the refills, because everyone hates to go for that cool sip of cola & here the sound of the straw getting air. Â The food was great, we had fried shrimp, chicken tender strips, pulled pork sandwich, waffle fries and seasoned fries. The kids meals even came with a pudding snack, the kids smashed em'! The taste and feel of Mr. B's is still the same as when I was a kid and picked it for my birthday dinner! I'm not sure how much of the food is frozen & then fried but I love it all the same!
Review Source:I... don't understand why there are always so many freaking people at this place. Â I've come here a couple times for a friend's birthday and just for a drink after walking past - but this is honestly the place that I avoid for the most part, heck, I'd even lie to get out of meeting someone here. Â The food is mediocre at best - maybe an extra star for one of their salads - but it's completely forgettable. Â The food, however, is not the issue. Â The problem is the fit of late 20- and 30-somethings who apparently still believe that they're 18 and in college. Â The place is too loud to speak with the people you're with, you have to wrestle your way to the bar to wait 15 minutes to get a drink, and the dance floor is typically a hot mess. Â Save yourself the cover and the stupid stamp on your hand and go somewhere else.
Review Source:On your birthday they give you $8 off your food bill, which is why we decided to go there. Â I arrived early (usual) and was sat promptly. Â Our waitress was great, she was knowledgeable, professional, quick and attentive. Â She is the sole reason for the 3 stars.
As for the food, the appetizer was good; however, the burger was horrible. Â The patty was very thin, like when it is frozen and didn't to have much flavor. Â But the worst part was that the bread was stale and the fries were under cooked.
We ended up drinking for a bit then leaving. Â If you are looking for a good place to hang out with your friends and drink, then this is a nice bar with a lot of room and pool tables. Â If you want to eat, there are better places in Royal Oak.
I stopped in the past Saturday for a drink while waiting on my take out order from another destination on Main Street. There were two Granny's getting down on the floor, very similar to passing an auto accident. Drinks were decent the crowd was 'MEH'. Is it a sports bar or a nightclub, idk...
Review Source:Went to Mr. B's for a friends birthday on a Saturday night. It was packed, but that's pretty standard for Royal Oak on the weekends, the doorman was polite and did his best to get people's ID's checked and get them inside. The bartenders do a better than average job of getting people drinks quickly. Honestly, if they can see you they'll try and serve you, its just a matter of fighting you way up to the bar to be seen.
Mr. B's is some sort of sports bar/club hybrid and it doesn't do the sports bar section overly well because its too crowded and loud from the club half. That said they do have a bunch of TV's that were turned to the late night college football game and the drinks are reasonably priced and well made. If your in the mood for a rowdy bar/club then its probably a good fit for you. The night I was there at least 3 groups of girls got kicked out, a girl threw up on the dance floor, two others dropped drinks on the dance floor (that had to shut part of it down to clean it up) and then another girl just dropped. She was smoking on the sidewalk out front, fell over backwards, cracked her head on the sidewalk and had to be carted away by ambulance. So know what you're getting yourself into.
I stopped in here to grab a late lunch/early dinner with some friends when I was visiting the area. we ended up just getting several appetizers and sharing everything.
I think we all agreed that we could have done without the SW sampler - and the jalepeno poppers would have been better with cream cheese instead of cheddar - but overall the food was good.
The boneless wings meat was good, shrimp was good (or so my friend said), waffle fries & mozz sticks all your basic fried bar food but it was all tasty to us!
The margarita I had & the daiquiri's my friends had all left something to be desired. I am not a big fan of a margarita that tastes like it came from a bottle so I wouldn't get that again but if I just wanted some quick & easy apps I would go here again. They have Keno available too if you are into it.
Just another terrible bar food. I wonder what others are ordering/eating to give the restaurant more than few stars.
Ordered taco salad and received tacos, the waitress replaced it once I mentioned, but their taco salad had no taste, greasy meat, and mix of salad looked dead. Tacobell would have been better.
My son and hubby had a pizza. Too dough-y to our taste.
Next!
What happened to the Royal Oak Mr. B's!!?
Not to sound like the old person at the party but back when I used to live in DT Royal Oak we would go to Mr. B's to play pool, have a couple drinks, maybe some nachos or pizza. Â Nice, laid-back time. Â
We returned a while back and I was surprised to be greeted at the door by a burly bouncer and then enter into a Jersey Shore-esque thrall of humping bodies. Â Obviously I am not up on current events, but when did this sports bar become a sweaty nightclub? Â
I am all about a night of dancing with my girls, but it is sad to see a cool hangout turn into a nightclub. Â Call me rigid, but nightclubs are nightclubs and sports bars have pool tables and jukeboxes. Â :)
We went around 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon for an early dinner, so it wasn't very crowded and I can't speak for the Friday/Saturday night bar atmosphere or clientele. Â Quiet enough to have a conversation, but I can understand that it would get pretty loud in there. Â
We were seated by a hostess that looked pretty bored (reading the newspaper at her stand). Â We're new to the area, so my husband asked if there were any beer specials from Michigan breweries, and the waitress signed and said, "Um, I don't usually work on Sundays, so I don't know."
Um, how about you find out? Â Would that be a lot of effort?
She suggested Dogfish Head. Â I'm pretty sure that's from Delaware.
Here's what we got: Â two Michigan IPAs, a queso dip (mediocre--skip at all costs), a cowboy burger with seasoned fries (actually quite good), iced tea and a veggie pizza (fresh, not frozen, but a TON of red peppers and not much else for toppings, and alfredo sauce makes the entire thing too heavy).
Our bill: Â $48.
Disclaimer: Â we're originally from Chicago, and we're used to paying more for food. Â And I guess it's fair since an appetizer and alcohol were included, but the itemized bill included a $2.99 charge for the fries in ADDITION to the price of the burger. Â Like I said, both were good, but fries are something that come with a burger at a sit-down restaurant. Â If you're charged extra, you're usually getting fast food. Â If we'd said no to the standard potato chip side, would we have gotten a plate with just a burger thrown on it? Â Get real. Â And with a sullen waitress to top it off? Â
Bottom line? Â We'll probably be back for beer, not food, and we'll rely on our own brain power to make the selection.
I've been to Mr. B's a few times, but was really put off with my last visit. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by a scowling waitress. This girl was terrible- openly rolling her eyes at a drink order, and throwing orders into the middle of the table with no acknowledgment. Unimpressive.
Later into the night, a DJ was brought in, to play the absolute worst dance music in the world (e.g. Ice Ice Baby). Insane disco lights were turned on, tables moved, and the old person dance party commenced. Have you ever heard the Cha Cha Slide played outside of weddings? No? With good reason.
To top it all off, security and management are horrible. We ended up leaving with a 20% off coupon after our terrible experience, but it's just not worth the pain and heartache that is a night out at Mr. B's.
I've been coming here on  and off for 10 years. I think the biggest appeal has to be the very mixed crowd. It's one of the few bars in Royal Oak that you see people of all ages and all walks of life (The Rock is another that comes to mind). No one will care if you're in a suit or coming in after a hard day in the coal mines. If you're just trying to start the night out to figure out what to do from there, or have a diverse group of people who can't decide where to go, this is an easy choice. It also makes a good meeting place because it's the one landmark everyone seems to know.
The food is hit or miss in terms of items I'd recommend. There are a few things like the Panini's that I find really good, the Buffalo Chicken Salad, etc.. and then some other stuff that I'm not crazy about, but nothing I'd say was "bad". Entrees are probably around $10-11, but the portions are large- you won't leave hungry.
I've been there many times and almost always had really solid service. I understand that it's recently turned into a more "party" environment with dancing and Dj's, which I honestly don't have much of a interest in and can't really speak about. But it's definitely a big bar where you can always find a quite area.
The biggest thing going against Mr. B's might ironically be that it's been there so long, it's considered a pretty unimaginative choice among the Oakland County snobbery. In a city where there seems to be venue closing or opening every other month, it's not exactly going to generate a ton of follow up conversation or inquiry when you tell your friends you went there on Saturday night, as everyone seems to be familiar with it's inner workings.
You can't deny it's longevity though. Bars have and come and gone, but B's has been there 25 years. At worst, Mr. B's of Royal Oak may not wow you, but you'll probably at least find it ok even if it's not your scene.
It is official! Â I have found the home of the most ANNOYING college football fans in the metro Detroit area. Â I will also NEVER root for Iowa because the urge to punch their fans in the face is too strong.
I met up with a girl friend here to watch the MSU game. Â We should have known better when the minute we opened the door to the place we hear male shrieks. Â I was pretty sure someone's mom was getting their arse handed to them inside the bar area. Â Nope ... in fact ... it was Iowa getting their arses handed to them. Â
It's amazing how distracting it is to hold a conversation with a person, and even watch our football game, when men of varying hairiness are chest beating, beer swigging, and butt-slapping every time someone from Iowa picked their nose let alone make a good play.
The food here at Mr. B's was okay. Â It was definitely overpriced considering most of it is greasy bar food. Â Their waitresses were also annoying. Â No joke, we had a waitress approach us for our order almost every minute for 10 minutes until we finally ordered. Â I felt like they were hawks waiting for the prey. Â Except they pounced every time we even looked at the menus on the table or tried to make conversation with each other. Â We felt bullied into ordering food. Â
At least the day ended well. Â The Spartans won, the Hawkeyes lost (HAHA SUCK ON THAT ANNOYING FANS!), and I learned that I will not be going back here if I can help it.
Good bar food with an extensive TGIF-like restaurant style menu, nothing out of the ordinary, but good extensive menu with a lot of premium and steak options as well as plenty of naughty apps to go alongside drinks. Drink selection is vast, though prices are middle of the road. Plenty of space, flat screen TVs for games, and pool tables. On the weekend nights a DJ plays pop/dance/nostalgic music and a tacky light system flashes on the dance floor. Surprisingly we saw a line form to get in after about 11pm on Saturday night. The security and bouncers here take things a little too seriously, as there are like 10-15 of them parading around with hard looks on their faces and really buzz killing tendencies to yell at people in an unnecessary attempt to create order, even when the place is only half full. This is Mr. B's, not the Marine Corps guys, relax a little.
Overall, a cool bar to make a pit stop at for 30-45 mins. at on a bar crawl in Royal Oak, I would not have fun making the whole night here, though. Plenty of cute girls, but still has a little bit of the typical big sports/billiards bar scene that dubs as a halfway dance bar on the weekend nights. Reminiscent of Main Street Billiards up in Rochester (though I like that place better).
Mr. B's is kind of like Buffalo Wild Wings and Applebees had a lovechild.
Part sports bar, part run-of-the-mill sandwich/pizza/wrap fare. Â I like my restaurants to be restaurants, and my bars to be bars...but Mr. B's just seems a little confused. Â They also seem to think they are cooler than what they are.
The service has always been ok. Â The food has always been ok. Â Drinks are ok, prices are ok. Â But why settle for "ok" when just down the block are a handful of other, better establishments? Â
The only time I've come here is when meeting friends of mine who suggested it...I may come back at some point for the same reason. Â But rest assured if I'm in Royal Oak, I'm not going to be seeking this place out on my own.
I've been coming here a regular basis in my 2+ years of living in Royal Oak. Â Overall, this is a decent place to watch a game and grab a bite to eat.
This place is very spacious. Â Over the last year or so, they got rid of some of the clutter towards the back and put in more tables. Â There really isn't a time, except for very big sporting events, that this place feels too crowded. Â there is a section that is pretty distant from the main bar area, so you can sit there if that is more to your liking. Â 2 bar area ensure fairly speedy times in between drinks.
The food is better than most sports bars. Â I've come here for dinner more than a few times and each time, it's been good. Â Nothing special thought. Â Salads are always fresh. Â The sandwiches are delicious. Â Big fan of california rueben. Â The entrees always seem to be well prepared as well.
Service is always better than average here. Â Sometimes you get a bad apple every once in a while, but it's few and far between. Â +1 for keeping the tabs straight during some Stanley Cup Finals games when 12+ people all on separate tabs are huddled up around a make shift table.
I think the place could actually use a few more TVs or at least optimize where and how they are positioned. Â Most of the table locations have good views, but not all. Â A few more scattered about would do wonders. Â
Overall, I like this place and will continue to come here.
I am a glass-half-full-guy. Go ahead and read all my glowing reviews. But I hate this place. I hate the food. The overpriced beer. The stupid little mugs they serve the beer in. I have never had a meal in this place where I even said, "Man...that was solid." Not once. A few friends used to drag me to this place in my younger days. I'd go, but I wasn't happy about it.
Go to Ye Olde Saloon.
I just went up to Mr.B's this past weekend for the first time for a friend's birthday. Since this was my first time there I didn't go in with any prejudice except that I do expect a good crowd since it is Royal Oak. As soon as you walk in the door you are carded and give your "I'm over 21" seal.
THE BAR:
The bar is split in to three different sections. Once you walk in the front door you see a bar/dining area to your left which has a dark/rustic look it and on the right you can hear the bass bumping (kinda sorta aka needs better speakers) from the mini dance floor and if you walk down the hallway to the back of the bar behind the dance floor there are a few pool tables , 2 dart boards and a few tables to get away from the chaos of the dance floor. There are flat screens all over the bar and most of them are on ESPN or some sports channel so if you want to watching sports with closed captioning at a bar is your thing: u win !
THE CROWD:
I expected Mr.B's to have a younger crowd aka early 20s to late 20s but the Saturday night that I was there most of the men/women were in their 30s and older and on then there were barely legal girls (I definitely think 18 or 19 year olds) grinding it up on the dance floor.
DRINKS:
The drinks are moderately priced for a bar in Royal Oak. It's not as expensive as Black Finn and no as cheap as Woody's. I think tequila shots are priced at around $5.50 and a Crown and Coke is $6.50 (i think(
WHAT SETS THIS PLACE APART ?
Nothing. I don't see anything unique or amazing about this place that would make me want to come here again. I am not saying its not a nice place to go to but is it the a really fun place to hang out ? I would say it all depends on the people who come along with you but if I had to pick between Rosie O'Gradys in Ferndale of Mr. B's...Mr.B.s clearly loses the battle.
The dance floor is small so there is definitely not a lot of room to dance and one half of the floor is taken up by guys staring and visually molesting women lol
However, after coming there I was introduced to professional rodeo-ing on ESPN and now I'm a fan lol
As far as a sports bar goes this is an ok place. Its not ESPN zone or anything.
This is a good sports bar with the drink specials, fried fat kid food, pool tables, and loud noise level. Its an ok place to go and hang out with a group. Its usually crowded, and I tend to avoid places like this, but we've been a few times. Its a good time once in a while.
This is a sports bar. If you want a sports bar, this is a "nice" one. If you want to eat decently, pay fair prices for bad beer, keep your clothes from reeking of smoke, not be the meat at the meat market, hear the person next to you or keep from suddenly realizing that the company you keep lacks enough taste to voluntarily choose to be here, then don't go here. 20 year olds have an excuse but everyone else should know better.
Review Source:I agree with Matthew.. the t.v's are located in really funky places. While they do have quite a few, it doesn't do anyone any good if they can't see them. There are a few select places that are "good seats." If you are seated in one of these said seats, then you can watch nearly any t.v in the place... I thought the point of having multiple t.v's was so that MULTIPLE people could watch.. not just a select few having the luxury of watching multiple t.v's.
One another note, the food is good bar food. I especially liked the Buffalo Chicken sandwich. It's what you expect from a Buffalo Chicken sandwich, but the chicken was still juicy and not all dried out.
Last time I was there, I went to play darts (they have electronic dart boards). Â Nearly all of their darts were mangled to the point of making it quite difficult to play. Â A wee bit depressing when the sole reason of my trip was to play darts.
I also asked my waitress (which I give them credit for having a "mobile" waitress tend to the "gamers") if they carried Bells. She went off on this huge rant about how she had heard the rep for Bell's was such an a-hole (not my words folks--hers) and yada yada yada. I didn't disclose the fact the I am good friends with "the bosses" daughter, but I found it strange that she went off with such a strong opinion to some random stranger about something she had only heard second hand.
They also carry the Big-Ten network if you're looking to catch a game-- just make sure there's not a 'Stones game going on as well because they take precedence.
side note: they also have good ranch.
I like the food here. Â It's good bar food. Â They actually have some good salads if you want to stay away from things like potato skins and chicken fingers and whatnot. Â I prefer to come here and eat or watch a game (that is if it's not a hyped up game that will pack the place), over coming here to go out.
At night, however, the bar picks up and the place draws in a crowd. Â There are lots of tables to sit at, there are some pool tables, and there is no place to dance. Â It's a sports bar, and it's a pretty good sports bar, but it brings a different crowd than most of the other places on Main or Fifth.
I agree with Aaron: EH.
I'll preface by saying that Mr. B's makes a tasty steak. In fact, every single thing I've had there has been fairly tasty... but that's simply not enough.
Part of the problem is with the crowd that Mr. B's attracts. Weekends in Royal Oak can be a madhouse of bikers, and it seems like they all flock to Mr. B's for drinks or food. Now, I have nothing against bikers... but when it gets so loud in a BAR that even I can't stand it (and guys right out front of the outdoor seating of Mr. B's revving their bikes the whole time doesn't help noise either) then it might not be the right place after all.
It can get pricey real quick. As Katia pointed out, the beers are more expensive but bigger. Honestly I don't see a difference between these beers and the beers in Gusoline Alley... except Gus's is cheaper if you get the right brew.
If you like it loud, then Mr. B's might be your kind of place. Me, I'll be at Gusoline!
A great place for lunch. It is a very large location with plenty of room to relax, kick back and enjoy a low-pressure lunch. The menu is expansive and varied with comfortable prices (in the $10 range without alcohol).
My hesitancies are this: it gets loud when it is busy and the drinks are not the cheapest. I like it for lunch, but its not a great draw for me on a Friday night.
