mmm  after reading all the good reviews we decided to try  it since its so close to where i live. I had  2 tacos 1 chicken and 1 tilapia and no i wasn't impressed at all, first of all it literally has 3 small cubes of chicken on it and the tiniest amount of lettuce, now i'm thinking why haven't i taken  a picture? they weren't  really good, thank god i wasn't hungry.
My Bf had a burger... the bun was plain and flavorless and just the meat inside i wonder if it was from a frozen bag because he didn't enjoy it at all.  we will be going back to Lockdown for their  amazing burgers and probably never return to this place!
Bullhead Cantina is a West Coast Big Star. Â More laid back, expansive, and car friendly than its hopped up, energetic, trendier (but still delicious) urbanite Wicker Park cousin, Bullhead Cantina boasts a solid list of bottled beers, bourbons you can bank on, and a taco selection that challenges and surpasses Big Star on breadth and flavor.
The Achilles' heel of Big Star is that you'll never know if you can get a steak taco; many times you cannot. Â You'll have no attack of beef anxiety at Bullhead. Â The steak taco is a mainstay and it is delicious; much more flavorful than a steak taco you'll find at any another neighborhood taco joint. Â I also recommend the al pastor taco, rich with flavor and marinaded pineapples, they are delicious and a cut above the usual taco joint. Â Well worth the $1 premium. Â All the toppings are crisp and fresh, as are the salsas and guacamole.
For drinks, bourbon is front and center here, with all the big names at very reasonable prices. Â The cocktail list is excellent, and I highly recommend the Dirty Old Man, which is a Manhattan plus Amaro. Â Delicious with a punch of bitterness, it is quite aptly named.
The staff is very friendly, and while I have not been here on a weekend night, it is never crowded. Â The music leans to soul and motown and even on a cold winter afternoon I feel like I am hanging in California - don't know why, don't question it. Â Stop by and enjoy some delicious food and drinks and wait for the world to pass you by.
My only complaint here is that all the tables here except two are tall bar tables, with backless stools. Â This seems to be a bar trend, and I would like it to stop. Â Regular tables are more comfortable, and if you must have bar stools, buy ones with backs and armrests. Â See the Captain's Bar Stools at TenCat. Â Those are AWESOME. Â I'll get off my soapbox now.
What did you say? Â Salsa made fresh every morning?!? Â Guacamole made to order?!? Â Taco fillings made fresh every morning or made to order??!? Â Tortilla chips treated correctly, so you aren't consuming too much oil, thanks to the poor frying practices??! Tortillas made to order?? I don't remember the last time I had handmade tortillas. Â Have I died and gone to tortilla heaven?
My friend and I were pleasantly surprised when we decided to grab an early dinner a couple Saturdays ago. Â We decided to start the evening with some cocktails (red wine decent and whiskey cocktails - yum!), chips, salsa, and guacamole. Â What a way to begin the early evening! Â As always, when it got to decide on what else I wanted to order, I felt overwhelmed. Â I asked our server for some recommendations, and she was spot-on! Â I ended up inhaling three tacos: Â grits & kale, grilled sweet potato, and beer grilled chicken. Â My friend decided on enjoying: Â a couple pastor tacos and a grilled portabello mushroom taco. Â These $3 bites of heaven tickled my palate and I found myself wanting more. Â Thank goodness I located my "off" button, or it may have gotten messy!
The space is narrow, long, and dim, with a few TV's mounted on the walls. Â Perfect for watching football games!
All said and done, we had a lot of tasty food and two cocktails each. Â The bill, you say?!? Â Only around $50!! Â What a great way to get some food in your belly, before Saturday adventures, and without breaking the bank!
That's what I'm screamin'!!
This place is amazing. Its our favorite neighborhood bar to walk over to. They are closed on Monday's during the winter months, so be aware of this- we tried on a Monday once and were disappointed. Also, as others have stated, they only accept cash but do have an ATM there for you.
The service is incredible- we love the Thursday night bartender and go frequently. Love the $6 Taco, Whisky shot, Tall boy deal. We have absolutely tried every single taco on the menu- they are phenomenal, made to order, with homemade in house tortillas. Incredible! Have both vegetarian options, and all are farm fresh ingredients that are alwyas fresh. We love the Carnitas and the Pulled Pork Tacos the best. I totally disagree with all the negative reviews. I mean, it is what it is. A great, hole in the wall, neighborhood local that is worth the destination trip for great tacos, great deals, great service, and lets be honest, Tall Boy PBR's and Daisy Cutters.
Eh.
My sweetheart has been interested in stopping here for a variety pack of reasons and so we finally did the other night. Â Unfortunately, I think it'll be our only visit.
The interior was ok. Â It seemed like they ran out of money trying to finish the space out. Â Either that or they sent a friend on a one day shopping trip, "just pick up some old looking stuff, here's some cash." Â All high stools throughout with no backs which get uncomfortable.
No ciders, but I'm pretty used to that. Â Always disappointed, but such is life. Â I was interested in maybe checking out some of their tacos, since that's what they seem to be about, but was bummed that they only came in corn tortillas. Â Yeah, allergic to corn, so no-go on that. Â I thought the hubs was going to get some but for some strange reason he didn't. Â We both had burgers. Â They were mushy. Â The first few bites tasted ok with this seasoning they put on there, but after a few more, it got kinda too kicky and gross. Â The fries, on the other hand, were really good.
Our server was nice but rough with the hard up-sell at every table visit. Â That was off-putting. Â Oh, and fyi, cash only.
Oh well.
The Pama Luna Margarita was incredible. Â I prefer a cocktail that isn't too sweet, so the server recommended easy simple syrup. Â Great recommendation. Â
The appeal of this place is non-traditional tacos. Â The roasted beet taco is the sleeper on the menu. Â Also great were the brisket and southern fried chicken tacos. Â Also, the salsa is mild, but amazing. Â
Great secret off the beaten path.
I really wanted to LOVE this place.
It's not terrible but it is definitely lacking something. Like maybe a better beer list?
A couple of girlfriends and I ended up here  on a Saturday night and I was expecting it to be packed. It wasn't. There were mostly other tables of girls with their girlfriends. Seriously though.
We get a table and were greeted by a lovely server. By lovely I mean he was cute. Â
I knew I wanted to try some of their tacos so I went with an al pastor, tilapia and a southern fried chicken. They are all $3 so I'm expecting a bang for my buck. I also went with a Revolution beer they had on tap.
The tacos come and they look good. I do notice that they are on one very thin tortilla that pretty much makes my taco look like a tostada. Â The tacos weren't bad but I wasn't swooning over them either. They did give us one container of their hotsauce and that was some good SHIZ! Â
I don't know if I'd go back here soon and I really do feel that they need to improve their beer list. My friend likes a darker beer and the only thing they had to offer her was Guinness. Like for reals, yo.
I think most people agree they have the food down pat. But where they consistently fall down is atmosphere or servers. We decided to try delivery last  night. Same thing. They forgot tortillas and took 20 mins to actually bring them ( two blocks). No apology or "sorry", definitely  was made to feel bad for asking for them.
Review Source:3 dollar tacos served on homemade tortillas? Yes please. I tried several: the tilapia, avocado, and portabello mushroom. I thought the portabello mushroom was the best as the marinated mushroom packed the most flavor. The real star of the food, however, was not the tacos but the spinach quesadilla. It had a nice smokey flavor and the cheese they used was really exceptional. I'm a little confused as to why the spinach version costs $2 more than the plain cheese (I can buy a bag of spinach for $2 at Trader Joe's!!!) but I really enjoyed the spinach in the quesadilla so I guess that's the price I got to pay. The vibe here is super relaxed and chill and they have an impressive bottle list of craft brews, an extensive selection of whiskey, and a nice array of rotating taps. It's cash only but you don't gotta be carrying a lot as this place is a real value.
Review Source:The handmade tortillas help set this place apart from other taco bars. I went in on a Thursday evening and sat at the bar. The cocktails are reasonably priced and potent. They have specials daily and a very wide range of tacos to meet your needs. Definitely worth going back for more. Did I mention handmade tortillas?
Review Source:I decided to check this place out because of the positive reviews and because of some of the interesting taco variations they had on their menu. Â
I arrived around 3:35 pm and the restaurant was closed. Â It was posted on Yelp that the restaurant's operating hours were from 12pm-1am. Â The hours weren't posted on the website either. Â Apparently, the current operating hours are from 4pm-12am, but management didn't bother updating it. Â Pretty annoying since I made a special trip from downtown just to eat here. Â
The owner/manager told me to come back in 15 minutes, which I did, but refused to open the door until 5 minutes later - even after seeing me waiting outside. Â He just look pissed-off that I even came back. Â (Tip: If a restaurant fails to update their operating hours and customer returns 15 min. after being told to do so, let the customer inside and offer him a beverage or at the very LEAST give the patron a chance to look at the menu so they could order once the kitchen is open.)
Once inside, no one was very friendly or very accommodating and I didn't very welcome there. Â
The margarita I ordered was weak and tasted like it was made with cheap margarita mix. Â
I ordered 3 tacos and some chips and salsa. Â
-The brisket taco was superb. Â Great flavor and probably one of the best beef tacos I've had in a while.
-The avocado taco was good. But I would probably order something else next time.
-The fried chicken taco. Â The flavors were good overall, but the chicken had been obviously re-heated in the microwave since the exterior was unusually soggy while the inside was screaming hot -- pretty much what re-heated fried chicken should look and taste like. Â
-Chips and Salsa - Good
Overall, I would come back for the brisket taco, but after the terrible customer service, the operating hour debacle, and obvious flaws with the food and drink, I can't see myself returning nor would I be recommending this place to anyone.
I can only speak to the extremely good shot-beer-taco special. Amazing! During Riot fest this year it was offered for $5 but generally is $6 which is still amazing. This deal offered a choice of shots (bf got Jameson, I got apple pie moonshine), choice of a beer (tall boy can of Shlitz, PBR, etc), and any 1 taco off the list. No, this isn't just crappy ground beef taco bell-style! Gourmet taco and 2 drinks on the cheap? Get 2! When each taco is generally $3 and a shot was on special for $3, it's an amazing deal.
I got a grilled tilapia and grilled portobella taco. Both were great. Semi-small but still a great deal. We also got the chips, salsa, and guacamole. All were good but honestly the guac was overpriced.
Our server was very overwhelmed due to the Riot Fest crowds (despite being a Sunday at 3pm it was still very busy since the huge event was just down the street at Humboldt Park). However, she did a great job and was clearly making an effort to remember our orders, provide great service, and stay caught up. I would definitely try coming back to this bar another time.
dude, yeah. Â 3.75. Â good alternative to big star, which i'm sure they hate it when people say that. Â but big star, although extra delicious, is packed, we all know that.
friday night. Â not crowded. Â a massive array of tacos for your pleasure (ha). Â
i had the:
steak
sweet potato
pastor
they had the:
beer chicken
carnitas
taco de avocado
roasted beets
of mine, my fave was the steak. Â it was good, not great. Â sweet potato was not exactly cooked all the way thru. Â as for the pastor, it wasn't like the pastor that i'm used to, so i didnt enjoy it as much.
we did enjoy the beets, chicken and carnitas. Â the avocado didn't go over so well.
5 DOLLA MAKE YOU HOLLA craft cocktails. Â SUPER DANGEROUS. Â we walked in as ladies, and walked out as not ladies. Â whoa. Â oh, they were tasty cocktails, too. Â the humboldt hillbilly was my personal fave. Â
i will definitely be back to try more taco flavas.
Loved it. $3 tacos. Daily specials. Delicious cocktails. No attitude. Plenty of places to park. Ample seating. Humboldt Park. Loved it.
You know me. I am always up for checking out a business in an under-trafficked (relative) part of town. When I started to hear the press about Bullhead Cantina, I had to go check it out and bring everyone's favorite orangehead with me. I mean, if this is a rock & roll kind of place, I needed to make sure that I came with some cred. Luckily for us, we can on a Friday. That means $5 cocktails. $5 COCKTAILS!!! i mean, the prices are already low, considering those bad boys come in a mug and with a heavy pour. But, sipping down goodies like Bourbonade and Sweet Tea concoctions... for $5... why did I drive? Next time, it's all about the California bus... well, in the daytime. I'm adventurous but not stupid. In any case, get a designated driver of some sort, come here on a Friday, sample all of the cocktails, and pass out. 's fun.
Or, if your thirst can't wait to be quenched, sidle up to a table and start ordering some $3 tacos to soak up that booze. These aren't hipster portions. These aren't foodie portions. For $3, you get a tacos that you'll have to take many bites to finish and with every bite, you'll get the chance to taste an explosion of flavor. My favorites (in no particular order): the grilled chicken taco (tossed in PBR and lime and served with lettuce, chimichurri and tomato - hold the sour cream), FRIED CHICKEN TACO (first off: it's a FRIED CHICKEN TACO; HELLO! Secondly, it has cabbage, chipotle chile sauce, jack cheese, lettuce, and tomato; outrageously good), fish taco (tilapia served in a bourbon/tamarind glaze with lettuce, tomato sauce - tastes better than the description - and cucumber; hold the sour cream), and the al pastor (pineapple, cabbage, chile sauce, and cucumbers). My orangehead gal loved the veggie offerings and flipped her lid over the beet tacos. To me, beets taste like dirt, so I gave the plate the sign of the Cross and kept it moving.
Our server was super laid back and very nice. You might expect a bad attitude at a place like this. You would be mistaken. Added to all the great food, strong drinks, budget-conscious options, and chill service is a playlist that makes you want to go into a 46-minute monologue or do drugs or shoot someone or do something else Taratino-esque. With every new discovery at BC, my opinion of it raised and my enjoyment increased. I apologize for the late nature of this review because there probably isn't a better springtime hang out than BC. Well, only six more months to go...
The food, beer selection, and service here is great. And the prices are right. It's really close to 4 stars.
However, on a Saturday night close to midnight, this place was pretty dead. Though they serve a ton of food, the place is set up as a bar/ darkly lit, so it's sort of a weird place to go just for a meal. And weird to go to get your drink on too, given how empty it is.
I imagine it might be a better scene around dinner time, and I'll definitely be back for the Thursday taco special :) Cash only!
Another in the line of places that think just because you throw weird filling in tacos you can charge $3 for them. I get it, Big Star is tasty and hugely popular, but that doesn't mean anyone can do it. We tried 4 different tacos and one was good (pastor), 2 were ok (steak, mushroom) and one was substandard (sweet potato).
it is places like this that piss me off about some of Chicago's food scene, one place does an idea really well and you get 20 crappy imitations of it that just aren't that good.
Dood this place has some dang good taco's!! And for the paleo-hearted you can order the meal for two, which comes as a "build-your-own feast plate" w/o the tortilla's and have some good meat and veggies that's a step outside of ordering a plain old salad. Make sure you add a load of guac on the side.
Love the sweet potato tacos. Comes w/ an avocado sauce that I'm not sure what's in it , but it's a nice treat! *note* Make sure they bake them all the way through. First time we had them they weren't done all the way.
Also love the brisket and shredded pork. Well seasoned and chock full of meat-juicy!!!
Good prices, helpful staff. Win!
My first trip to this place had me a bit skeptical. There was one douchey guy, I'm assuming the boss man of some sort, hanging around. Talking up single women in the bar, talking to the bartenders like they were stupid, the usual Guy In Charge shit. But the bar is just around the corner from my apartment so I gave it another shot. Turns out this place rules. That guy never really caused me any grief again, so I'm accounting that to just being judgmental towards managers and bosses. Sorry dude.
I like it here for a number of reasons but foremost to me is the five dollar shot-and-a-beer combo. I love that kind of shit. It's a shitty shot and a shitty beer, but I'm a man of simple pleasures. And I like to get drunk on the cheap and maybe catch an inning or two of whatever game is on. The staff is pretty cool, the patio is cool, there's usually decent tunes on and the aforementioned cheap combo makes this place a winner.
The beer list is small I suppose, but I'd order a domestic either way so go read one of the beer snob reviews. I do like the cocktail, though. On tuesday and saturday they're only five boners a piece! Beat it!
I don't know about the food though. The one taco I've had (which can be added to your combo for only a buck!) was an avacado number and it was quite tasty. Every one else always seems to be having a good time when they eat the tacos there, so I'm sure the whole list is good.
So in summation, come to the Paseo Boricua and party!
Bullhead Cantina is what I like to call an exception to the rule. The rule being, every other so called Taco bar I've visited has sucked!! Especially when they're located in trendy, hipster neighborhoods. These places dole out bland food served in small portions. It's tasteless food that's aimed towards people who are afraid of a little heat and spice. I like to call it, Hamburger Helper-Mexican food. Bullhead Cantina bucked the trend. Regardless of the setting and location, the food at Bullhead was just too good to ignore.
Unlike the other places I mentioned above, Bullhead actually gives you a good sized taco for your hard earned dollar. The poser, Taco bars I've visited in the past featured taco's the size of a quarter. Bullhead's taco's are hearty and delicious. I went with four different selections. While they were all good, my favorites were the steak and brisket. Not only was the food topnotch, the service was excellent. Our food was out in no time and our server kept our glasses filled.
Here's the bottom line: When I get the hankering for some Mexican food, Bullhead Cantina is not going to top my list of places to get my grub on. Â But if you're looking to experience a different kind of Taco that offers some flavors you probably haven't tried before, Bullhead is worth experiencing.
Impression: Laid back, fun, diverse
Best Food:
*If you like home made corn tortillas this is your heaven
(probably not good the next day, just eat them)
Carnitas
Brisket
BBQ pork
Sweet potato
Salsa- best I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant in Chicago, smoky, flavorful and delicious
Guacamole- amazing
Worst Food:
AL pastor- had a pineapple flavor, maybe someone else might like it?
margaritas - pure water, maybe it was just that night but I'd go there for shots and nothing else
Service:
seated quickly, fairly well attended to, a little slow
drinks quick
food ~1 hour for
Quick Tip: Don't go with a really large group- the food takes too long
*If they're busy just be ready to hang out and don't go there incredibly hungry
Cash only
Drive if you don't live close
Following some serious disappointment and then rage following a fest related debacle, my gal pal and I needed food and we needed a drink immediately. Â Possibly lots of food and several drinks. Â
Firstly, they did not try to kick me out or confiscate the coco helado that I brought in and then ate at the table while perusing the menu. Â I probably would have gone full toddler if they had, so phew. Â Lucky them. Â We settled on the $6 special that delivers a shot, beer, and taco, similar to the PBJ at Boiler Room. Â Luckily you can get a 12oz can of Olympia in lieu of a tallboy of crap. Â I like that touch. Â Unable to stop at just one taco, we tried a number of them from the menu all of which I enjoyed, but the southern fried chicken one was a notable choice. Â Apparently I need to try beet and brisket next time. Â They had plenty of veg. choices for my companion and they make a decent old fashioned. Â
Our service was slow, but someone did apologize and let us know there were some glitches in their computer system and they were writing in all orders by hand, so I won't be too pissy about it. Â
Cash only.
Tacos and booze on the likewhoasupercheap.
The Daily Deals here are definitely where it's at. Allow me:
Everyday Special
PBR Tallboy // Shot of Whiskey // Taco // $6
See? That's special.
Bullhead also has a nice smattering of yummy beers (Delirium, Mad Hatter, Great Lakes, Bells, 3 Floyd's), delicious whiskeys (Oban, Evan Williams, Elijah Craig) and pretty rad tacos (southern fried chicken taco, bbq pork taco, roasted beets taco).
F'realz. Beets. In a taco. Whodda thunk it? Not I said the fly, but I gave it a try. While I didn't love it, the brisket taco with grilled poblano sure did rock my saucy socks off. I think playing it safer protein-wise might be the key here, but if you want to go funky and dig on the grilled sweet potato taco - or are a vegetarian - then the options are pretty endless.
Décor is cute and in-line with the Cantina vibe, service the night I was there was meh with a side of flighty. Luckily, everyday specials far outweigh flakey jakey waitstaff.
Taco Tuesdays just became Taco Everydays. Que Bueno!
Delicious!
Great service, wonderful food, decent buzz walking out.
My friend and I sat at the bar and ordered three tacos each, but only ordered the 6 dollar special twice. The bartender was very friendly and giving us tips on things going on for the weekend.
I got the tilapia, spicy avocado (could be spicier), and the al pastor with pineapple. They are all delicious. My friend got the tilapia and steak, and the steak were equally as wonderful. The variety they offer is great and I can't wait to come back and bring more friends each time they come to visit. Â They have a great selection of veggie options too.
Even the salsa with the chips was awesome! Nice punch of flavor. Would be nice if they just included that with your meal to start as an appetizer as opposed to paying 3 bucks for it. I'm not going to complain, though. It was good.
Watch your step as you walk in! I kind of tripped in front of everyone.
While standing around at the dog park, the conversation among the adults turned to food as it does when it's almost 7 pm and clearly no one is cooking. A new place located nearby was highly praised and thus we found ourselves walking into Bullhead 30 minutes later.
My first impression was certainly a good one. We were greeted warmly upon entering and it was immediately clear that this isn't a typical, overly loud, hipster bar.
We decided on a variety of tacos, because seriously, EVERYTHING sounded awesome. Brisket? Southern Fried Chicken? Roasted Veggie? Um, yes please. This is a great place to go to satisfy both your carnivorous and plant-eating friends.
The cheese quesadilla could have been a meal on its own considering the order comes with 3 cheese stuffed tortillas and generous servings of guac (soooo good!!), sour cream and pico de gallo. Oh, and the tortillas! House made. The BBQ pork was hands down the winner among the tacos, but there wasn't a bad choice.
Our order was to go so we didn't drink, but the cocktail list looked good and whiskey fans should be very happy with the selection.
Would I go back? Absolutely! The food was still good by the time we got to the house, but I can only imagine how much better it would be when served fresh. The staff was incredibly friendly and happy to answer questions. The overall vibe was low-key. The prices were more than reasonable.
Happy belly.
We wandered in upon a recommendation from a friend's hairdresser and we're all in agreement that Bullhead is going to be a regular addition to the rotation.
$6 for a pbr, a shot of whiskey, and a taco? Heck yes! Friendly servers? Heck yes! Non-obnoxious noise levels? Heck yes!
I tried the tilapia taco and the pulled pork taco and both were amazing. Their guac is cheap and delicious. Life is good at Bullhead.
I went here with a friend who had a Groupon, and it was delicious.
The Groupon was for chips and guacamole, Â a whiskey flight, and a taco sampler - 3 fillings, 12 tortillas. Sound like a lot of food for two people? It was.
The whiskey flight was interesting; it started with a bottom-shelf Evan Williams (ouch!) and ended with Buffalo Trace (yum).
For the taco sampler, we picked the carnitas, the tilapia, and the sweet potato. All were great, but I think the carnitas and sweet potato outshined the tilapia, which despite coming with a "tamarind bourbon" glaze, tasted a lot like plain tilapia.
In any case, the food was all really good - even the slightly boring tilapia was cooked perfectly. They served it with a bowl of veggies (cabbage, lettuce, salsa) as well as a few sauces (chipotle hot sauce I think, a creamy-avocado one, and sour cream).
This place is pretty close to where I live so I'll probably be back. It's cash only, though.
Do you like salsa? Do you care to be able to distinguish between tacos of differing contents? Do you enjoy good cocktails?
If you answered yes to any of the following questions, Bullhead may not be the place for you. If, however, you want to eat and drink on the cheap, you should put it on the radar.
Decent food and basic drinks make this a take it or leave it kind of situation. If they'd put some fucking salsa on the table, I'd probably drop a 4 on them. If they also either stepped up the cocktail game (3 of the cocktails utilize sweet vermouth, which I generally like, but found these depressing - so emo) or lowered the prices on the decent whiskey just a tad, I'd probably make it a 5.
Bullhead Cantina is like Big Star's cooler older brother. Â To sum it up in a couple words, it is a Taco/Whiskey bar. Â They have 12 different tacos (4 veggie) including Carnitas, Brisket, Southern Fried Chicken, and blackened sweet potato. Â Each one that i tried was delic. Â
Street parking is easy, right out front, and if you are scared to go into HP, then your loss, nerd. Â
They have a daily special that cannot be beaten. Â Taco (your choice) + Tall Boy (your choice) and a shot of whiskey for $6. Â How do they even make any money on that? Â You will be able to find me here at least once a week as long as I have legs and can leave the house. Â
Boom.
A restaurant that focuses on tacos and whiskey, just a block from my house?! Â what did I do to deserve this?
Went up on a Friday night with a friend and was pleasantly surprised that all custom cocktails are only $5 on Fridays.   The bartenders were super cool, too.  3 old fashioneds (tasty, by the way) and 3 old styles, accompanied with  a spicy avocado taco & carnitas taco,  and we were sold.  We loved it so much, we spent Saturday afternoon there, and brought more friends.
We tried over half of the menu, and not one item was disappointing. Â Everyone had a different favorite, too, which was kind of cool. Â They do not skimp on the delicious stuffing, but the homemade tortillas are what really make the tacos! Â Holy crap they're amazing! Â The owner stopped over and bought us a round, which was awesome, and the sign of a guy who appreciates his customers.
These guys have excellent specials, killer tacos, tasty whiskey, cold beer, friendly waitstaff (seriously awesome). Â What more do you need?
Big Star's got some Big Competition! Â - Â And so does the Boiler Room, for that matter: Â $6 for a taco, beer, and shot. Â Can't beat that!
P.S. I still think you guys should call that special "The Superstation" (TBS).
2.5 stars.
I ate lunch here today. Â It was 12:30 and there was one other patron in the bar. Â I wasn't drinking, but i did appreciate the $3 shot special. Â The menu looked great, with such a wide selection of tacos, but i was also fearful that with having so many tacos, the quality would suffer. Â I ordered the Steak taco, the Beer Can Chicken taco and the Grilled Tilapia taco. Â The bartender said they were fairly large and i wouldn't need more than that.
Well, she was right about the size. Â Three tacos was plenty of food. Â But all of my tacos came out cold? Â What was up with that? Â My friends tacos came out luke warm at least. Â None of the cheese on the tacos had melted. Â One other customer in the restaurant and we weren't getting hot food? Â That is unacceptable (sound the gong!).
Anyways, the flavors were ok, but getting served cold food is just a big no-no. Â My other comment is that for a place that just opened, the place looks pretty dumpy. Â Is it supposed to be a dive bar? Â I didn't get that sense, but that's what it felt like. Â I could eat there again if necessary, but in a city with a lot of good taquerias (sp?), i am not rushing back.
