I like this place so far. A small tap room with selections on tap and in bottles. You can get bottles to go or enjoy there. I like how you can order food from the neighboring restaurants and make arrangements to have the food brought to you or to get picked up. This place is meant to be a tap room not a restaurant so having this option is nice. My only complaint is about this place is if you don't know where it is you will pass it and have to make a u-turn. They are on the side of the building so they are easy to miss from the street. They also don't have a permanent sign yet so it was hard to find the first time. Also the bartender we had was alittle green and needed to be reminded about tabs. I think he was new.
Review Source:This place has a good selection and good atmosphere. Â We've been twice. Â The first time was good except for the jerky group the kept infringing on our personal space. Â The second time was a Sierra Nevada night and it was fun. Â Downside watching an argument between who I am pretty sure was the owner of Capitol Beer and Tap Room arguing and cursing with someone from Tokoyo Fro's about reviews and service. Â Note to owner not a really great thing to do right outside your building. Â Also get your own food service or find a new location.
Review Source:A little hesitant to write up a Yelp review of this place because it's biggest charm is just how peaceful the place was when I visited. Â It's in the same parking lot as Tokyo Fro's and some mundane looking waffle house I may never visit.
It's kind of like Pangaea on Franklin. Â Maybe 20-25 wonderful ales on tap with a bottle shop also. Â No food served there but Tokyo Fro's will send a waiter if you ask the bartender.
The traffic is insane on Fair Oaks and Howe. Â This place is tucked way away from either road and can't be seen at all from the sidewalk. Â Look carefully or you will miss out on a blissful time,
Tony E: Are you kidding me? In which world does "Beer and Tap Room" equate to "restaurant"? There are two dozen perfectly good restaurants within a half-mile of Capitol Beer. If you wanted a dining experience, you should have gone to one of them. Heck, Ruth's Chris is across the street!
As far as my review of CB&TR goes, this place is a gem! They've consistently got outstanding beers on tap and always have something I haven't tried. You don't need to be a beer connoisseur to enjoy your time here, you just need to be interested in trying good brews.
They maintain their social media page pretty well to keep us informed about special releases and tap takeovers. Service is always friendly and the atmosphere is exactly what it should be.
On the bottle shop end, they've got a great selection with many hard-to-find offerings. The bottles are priced well, and you can typically find the local favorites here.
Highly recommended.
OK, for beer connoisseurs, this place may be heaven, but if you're looking for food.......
What a weird setup. Â The "guy" goes next door to get food from the sushi restaurant??
I say, "the guy", because they only have bar service; No table service. Â
I may be old fashioned, but I'd like to have food in the same place; I don't like ordering out to get food, WHEN i'm in a restaurant!!
After about 10 visits I've decided this is the best beer bar in Sacramento. Â Better then Pangaea's over-priced beers, better then the shack, better then anywhere else I've been. Â They always have special kegs on tap, and its never crap. Â I love that all the servers love beer as well and know what they are talking about. Â The owner is cool and will give you the lowdown on what beers they have, and what's coming in new. Â
There is one negative though, they close early! 9 pm midweek, and 6 pm Sundays. Â Friday and Saturday midnight which is good, but extend the hours midweek and Sunday please? Â Right now its not really dark till 9 pm and this place closes at 6 pm on Sunday when I want to wind down the weekend on their porch, and its closed! Â Still, any true beer lovers should make the trek, itll be worth it.
I had always wanted to check this place out, but are rarely in that area. We were out there today, so went there for lunch.
They have a pretty good selection you can buy from the beer store section, and have a pretty nice bar area. They have about 20 or so revolving taps, so a good selection of beer on tap.
The staff are great and friendly, and know their stuff.
They have a very limited in house menu, although nothing is very healthy. They do however make available food from Tokyo Fro's next door, so if you like sushi you are in luck.
Well worth the visit, and we'll be back!
The Capitol Beer and Tap room always has a huge range of fantastic beers that you likely won't find anywhere else. The owner and bar tender are both so knowledgeable about the beers and the breweries they come from. They always provide suggestions based upon your preferences and help you branch out to try new beers.
All around a delicious experience!
My fiancé and I just started looking for our neighborhood bar, and the search has already ended. The atmosphere is perfect (quiet, and feels like a historic Sac building), and the beer list is among the best in town. If you can't find something on tap to suit you, corkage is $1. We'll be back soon, and bring our own food so we can linger without worrying how we will get home.
Review Source:My new haunt.
For a beer lover like myself, this is a great place to hang out and drink beer. They have a constantly rotating selection of local and craft breweries that are all worth a try - anything from ciders to lagers to ales to porters and stouts. And if none of the beers on tap sound good there's still the attached bottle shop, Â where you can get any of a number carefully curated bottles of whatever kind of beer you could possibly desire at reasonable prices.
You could literally come here every night, and never have the same beer twice - the owner, Kenny, is a font of information and recommendations for their beers, both on tap and in the store.
A beer lovers frothy wet dream. It's location may be off-putting for many a grid dweller, but believe me it's worth trip.
I personally only learned about it from a friend who I was having dinner with at neighboring Bandera. We walked over after eating a huge meal thinking there was no way we could pour more carbs on top of it.
But of course I was wrong. Once I saw the beer selection in the refrigerators once walking through the door I knew I would have to brush the angel off my shoulder and partake. Around the corner is a long bar and an ever-changing selection of brews both micro and super micro for your refreshment. I chose a porter by a previously unknown to me brewery and thought it was the best dessert a guy could have.
If you have the time and a designated driver, make the trip and I guarantee you'll be satisfied.
Came in for Sierra Nevada Night during Sacramento Beer Week 2013 and had a pretty good time. If you ever get the chance to sample Ovila Quad barrel aged, do so! I probably need to come back on a regular, non brewery specific night to get the complete picture but with the number of taps available and the owner's obvious love of craft beer, I imagine there will always be something awesome to sample.
The atmosphere is bland, but that's ok, and the no food in house is actually a bonus in my opinion. Focus on what you do well, and here that is serving good beer.
My only super minor annoyance of the evening was the amount of time the owners spent talking about being the owners. Being a new patron, it is always more fun to have the focus be on me. If I feel welcome and wanted, I will always return.
For the serious beer lover, this one's for you! Â Here is a quaint bar that features unique hand crafted beverages straight from local beer farms and micro breweries. Â The wall of taps holds up to 20 different beers ready to pour and serve which should please even the most discriminating of taste buds. Â The beer selections go through a rotating flavor cycle of whatever happens to be available at the time, from lights, darks, hoppy, malts, etc. Â My boyfriend and I decided to stop in and check this place out before going to dinner at a nearby restaurant. Â Joe K. ordered a New Belgian Chocolate Stout. Â The stemmed glassful was somewhat smaller than I would have expected. Â But he seemed to enjoy the flavor and treated it like a dessert beer. Â I don't drink beer and can't comment on them, so instead ordered the barrel aged Woodchuck Hard Cider. Â This bold and strong tasting cider was served in a large glass which I eventually acquired a taste for. Â Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish it in time before we had to leave for dinner. Â Â
The interior lacked pizzazz in my opinion. Â When you first enter, it looks as if you just entered a mini mart. Â There is a refrigerated section that carries hand crafted bottled beers that are somewhat pricey. Â As you proceed further past a desk or maybe it is a checkout stand, you will come upon the small, dimly lit and quiet bar area. Â A short bar is positioned to one side of the elongated narrow room, while tables and chairs are placed on the opposite side of the wall and down to the other end. Â A few flat screened TV's were tuned in to some boring sports programs that we couldn't even hear. Â You can help yourself to complimentary pretzels or order food from the menu at the nearby Tokyo Fro's. Â
This handcrafted only specialty beer bar is a nice place for the serious beer connoisseur.  Despite the lack of décor or visual stimulation, it still does the job of catering to those who are passionate about beer.  I just wish I could be one of those people!
They have a nice variety of bottled beers to choose from. Â They have a nice variety of craft beers on tap. Â The guy that poured my beer seemed friendly and knowledgeable. Â The prices did not seem that out of line. Â I just wished it had an atmosphere that was somewhat better than a break room at work or school cafeteria. Â It did not seem like a pleasant place to hang out.
Review Source:I swing by this place a couple of times a month whenever to try out whatever beers they have on their tap. This is a great place to come and look for great tasting beer that is damned hard to find on tap anywhere else and for some elusive bottles of beer which the big stores don't get to carry. I'll keep coming back as long as they keep the beer pouring~
Review Source:One of the largest variety of beer, both on tap and bottled, with the majority being from micro-breweries, which I like. Â
The ambiance is a bit bland and could use some oomph. Â Went on a Friday night and it was a bit quiet. Â We each had 1 beer and left for a livlier place.
This is a good place if you want to drink beer in a nice, quiet atmosphere.
Capitol Beer and Tap Room is craft beer heaven on Fair Oaks Blvd. Â 20 taps that rotate regularly. Â Wide variety of styles. You can find everything from a hop bomb Double IPA, to a crisp Cider, to a smooth Stout on Nitro. Â Kenny (owner) is pretty well plugged in to the craft beer business because he always seems to be bringing in random kegs of fabulous beer that is either rare or impossible to find in Sacramento. Â
Prices are very fair ($6-$7 for a 12oz to 16oz pour depending on the style). Â If you can't decide on one beer, you can order a tasting flight (5oz pour of 4 different beers) at a reasonable price. Â Plus, free pretzels. Â BONUS! Â They have an arrangement with Tokyo Fro's (next door) by which you can order food if you are so inclined. Â Sushi menu as well as pub fare is offered. Â Waitresses bring the food to you in the pub. Â Very cool.
Another highlight at Capitol Beer and Tap Room is the the associated bottle shop. Â An excellent selection of craft beer in the bottle at very fair prices. Â A lot of styles and breweries you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Â Rumor has it Pliny the Elder from Russian River makes an appearance every now and then (shhh, don't tell anyone).
If you enjoy craft beer, or are looking to be adventuresome, I highly recommend that you check out Capitol Beer and Tap Room. Â The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable, and will take good care of you. Â Take a look at their website for the draft list of the day as well as any upcoming events or Tap Takeovers.
Look forward to seeing you there!
This is a short review.
The Good:
Great beers, not too many, a wide range of everything from nitro-charged stouts to a Strawberry Wheat, but
The questionable:
CB&TR is a bar in search of its crowd. Â It will find it, but just now, it's a little too clean, a little too sterile. My friend dropped her scarf on the floor, when she picked it up, it didn't stick at all. Hanging with friends on a Monday night, it was quiet--save for the omnipresent flat-screen plague--when it should have been hopping. Â Prices were fair, service was excellent. Â
Nota Bene: NO FOOD. But Tokyo Fro's is not only next door, they have a special menu just for the beer room!  I had the grilled cheese sandwich, with bacon, caramelized onion and jalapeño.  This was served with fries for a very reasonable $8.  Pints were $6 and $7 respectively.  Pay for your food separately when it's brought to you by the TF server.
-1 star for missing...something...not sure what. Â But it wasn't there. Otherwise, excellent. Go! Drink beer! It's good! Â Because it's beer!
Full disclaimer: I am not a beer drinker. Â I know very little about beer except for the fact that I don't like the ones that look like piss and have lite in their name, and I tend to like the ones that are smooth and dark and full-bodied. Â Hmm. Â Anyway. Â There's that.
I was invited to go to the Capitol Beer and Tap last night by a friend who is ALL BEER ALL THE TIME. Â His yelp quote is "I'll have the IPA." Â His profile pics on yelp and Facebook generally show him drinking a beer or making beer. Â Yeah, that's right, he makes beer. Â Out of his house. Â Every month, because he needs to keep his supply coming. Â He brews 50 bottles worth. Â I told him he should say he makes boutique beers. Â Sounds far better than some of the alternatives I was thinking (considering he stores the beer making thingy in the spare bathroom. Â See earlier comment about beer that looks like piss.)
Why wax rhapsodical about my friend, you ask? Â Isn't this a review about Capitol Beer and Tap? Â Why yes, yes it is. Â However, I wanted to provide an offset to my disclaimer about my inexperience with beer, with my friend's obsessive immersion in the stuff. Â See, now it all makes sense, doesn't it?
Okay. Â So I had to circle the block (or triangle) of Howe/University/Fair Oaks a couple times looking for parking and finally scored with one right out front. Â The place is set back from the front of the buildings, tucked away on the side, but you can't miss the frenetic energy you sense almost immediately as you approach the patio. Â The place is packed with men between the ages of 24 and 60. Â Score. Â Wait, I'm here for the beer.
I entered the place and it looks like I entered the wrong place, initially. Â I was expecting to be dumped right into a bar/pub area but instead I was greeted by a small grocery store looking place, walls lined with refrigerators and shelves showcasing beers from all over. Â I quickly walked through to the back, where I saw the crowds of people. Â Seriously, ladies, you have no idea. Â Don't hang out at Fats or Sienna or even Bandera next door... Capitol Beer and Tap is where all the men are! Â I saw maybe three women guests, and maybe 3 to 4 female servers. Â That was it.
Anyway, Â Found my friend quickly, tucked away in a prime corner spot with his bud (who deserves a review of his own. Â Really. Â He's a golf blogger. Â Oh the stories that are just waiting to be unearthed.) Â My friend was already pretty happy after having been there since 5pm, and was insistent that I try the beer he had, and what he called the "elixir of the gods." Â Yes, an India Pale Ale, also known to the beer afficionados as an IPA. Â I'm an accountant. Â To me, an IPA sounds very close to an IPO, an Initial Public Offering, which makes me sit up and take notice. Â This, my friends, would have bombed on opening day in the stock market. Â I tried it, and the bitterness settled in the back of my mouth and I couldn't hide my distaste. Â Luckily, my friend, let's call him R for ease, didn't take offense and instead asked me what I liked. Â So I explained what I said up there in my disclaimer. Â He was able to translate that into a glass of a pretty awesome Obovoid (by the Boulder Brewing Company.) Â Dark, nitro enhanced creamy head, delicious. Â Now we're talking! Â Quickly realized that the place doesn't serve food, but you can order in food from Tokyo Fro's next door. Â Pretty accommodating.
Oh...I forgot to mention why I was even dragged over there...for the Knee Deep Tap Takeover. Â Something I knew nothing about until two days earlier, when R explained it to me: when a local brewery brings several of their beers and "takes over" the taps at the pub, and then the pub is swarming with beery men salivating for a taste of the manna from heaven. Â Or something like that.
The place had a great energy, lots of conversations going on, happy, excited, unrestrained. Â So this is what its like when women aren't around. Â Interesting. Â The counter ran along the entire length of one wall, but the bar only came to half the distance...looked a little awkward to me, but the patrons had enough to look at on the wall...lots of little framed chalkboards with great drawings by one of the servers...who draws tributes to the beer being highlighted at the moment. Â Not bad, supporting the arts...I am liking this place more and more!
I stayed for little over an hour, good conversations with my friends, a lot of beer knowledge was imparted (in one direction, to me, the novice) and then I headed off to midtown to meet another group at the Pour House. Â From beer to whiskey. Â That's the life.
I will definitely be back. Â And I'm not sure if I will bring my girlfriends with me. Â Kinda want to keep this all to myself and my guy friends. Â Selfish? Â Maybe.
First visit today...very impressed. Â I didn't go into the tap room (although I did take a look) but I was impressed with their take home selections that are displayed nicely in a cooler out in front as you walk in. Â Obviously Capitol celebrates all things craft beer. Â I am looking forward to visiting the tap room in the evening and indulging in some of the 20 rotating beers. Â I picked up a few of my favorites to take home today (including a very "popular" selection that is difficult to find from Santa Rosa if you get my drift beer lovers!) and I will definitely be back.
The power of Yelp by the way...browsing for beer spots a couple of days ago this place came up and I would never have known about it otherwise.
Yay, yay, yay!! Â Rather than try to make some sub-par beer grub to go along with their Herculean microbrew list, this beer shop and tasting mecca lets you a) bring your own food in (indoor picnic, anyone?!), b) order from Tokyo Fros (and they bring it over), c) order from Eastern Empire (we did a to go order and hung out having a beer in the meantime), d) fill up on pretzels (not advised).
They carry an impressive selection in their shop and no less than 20 (20!) of the finest little breweries wares around. Â Fun, knowledgable bartenders; great patio seating; tap takeover nights where you learn a little something-something about what you're drinking; almost as many tvs as beers on tap, and no dbags.. this place has it all - and in what was formerly a vapid wasteland for no-frippery hangout places (sorry TFro's, you totally are one of those places).
Only thing missing is a freaking safe way to ride your bike down J Street to Fair Oaks; let's work on that Sacramento!!!
PS - park your car around the back in the Safeway lot (off Howe) and walk through; there is NEVER any parking on the Fair Oaks Blvd. side of the strip.
This place is really awesome. They have great craft beers and knowledgable staff. They are focused and passionate about beer, and, unlike some places in Sac that serve "craft beer," they are not pretentious or expensive.
As a "beer guy," this place is more Oregon or San Diego than Sacramento. Those who drink beer will know what I mean :-)
They also have a killer bottle shop!
First, I really like the idea of the place, I love the layout, and I hope to god it stays in business.
However, to justify the prices (and I'm talking the coolers, not the tap room) being higher than Corti Bros, Whole Foods, etc., EVERYONE working there needs to be very well versed on the selection. Â I don't mean the intricacies of how the beer was brewed, but style, taste, etc is pretty basic info.
When I go shopping at Davis Beer Shoppe or Hot City, I barely notice the prices (I generally spend $8-16 per bottle) because I'm getting value from the expert advice. Â Dropping $15 for a bomber when no one there has tasted it or has any idea about the bottle is a bit unnerving and doesn't justify the higher price.
At CBTR, some of the staff are wildly knowledgeable (Thank You!), and some simply have no idea about the products, but it's never consistent.
Please, please stay in business, but to do so, you've got to hire people who LOVE beer and know what they're selling.
Great selection of 20 regularly rotating craft and local brews poured by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Â I love the option of doing a flight of four 5 oz pours for $10 and the happy hour discount doesn't hurt either. Â In terms of location, Tokyo Fro's is right next door in case you develop the munchies while sipping on the quality brew. Â On that note, Fro himself even approached me and my friend afterward and had nothing but glowing things to say about the owners of Capitol B&T.
A must-stop for any and all beer aficionados out there!
Nice place and some awesome beers!!! They have pretty big selection of bottled beer you can buy and drink there or take home. Then there is the tap room which has a some excellent beers. They also have wine and they are next to Tokyo Fros  Which you can order from and they will bring it to you there.
Review Source:I recently went here for lunch and I was not disappointed. Â It's a beer and tap room, so let's start with that. Â There are other places in town that have MORE on tap, however, those other places don't have the unique selection this place has. Â There are (I believe) 21 taps on the wall. Â The beer menu is prominently displayed on the wall, written in chalk (I love this...very easy to read). Â The beer is served in proper glassware and at the appropriate temperature. Â This particular day in question, there was a "New Belgium Tap Take-over" in effect. Â That meant five or six different brews from New Belgium, all of which I'd never had before. Â We tried the Red Hoptober, their Peach Patio Lounger (Saison) and their double or imperial IPA. Â Wow, they were all delicious. Â A flight of four, 5 oz brews costs $10, very reasonable considering the quality and selection.
The staff was very friendly, very knowledgable and good at their jobs. Â The interior of the venue is clean, new and inviting. Â In addition to the taps, they also have 5 or 6 cold beer cases with lots of rare, European and American craft- and micro-brews.
The food: they do not serve their own food, but have an agreement with Tokyo Fro's: they cook the food and walk it over from the otherside of the courtyard. Â Right now, they are having an Oktoberfest menu, consisting of a very tasty smoked bratwurst, topped with grilled onions, sides of ketchup and mustard and fries. Â Honestly, the brat was really tasty, the bun was maybe the best bun I've had in town (why do so many places consistently screw up the bread that they serve their meat on!?). Â The bun was tender, chewy, and held the brat in its place until the last bite. Â A very good lunch for $8. Â
Friends, please give this place a shot. Â It's located right right next to Tokyo Fro's and Bandera, kinda hard to find but well worth a visit. Â Cheers!
I've only been to this place once, but I LOVE IT. It's fantastic! Amazing selection of beers on tap (20 at a time!) as well as a bunch of unique beers that I haven't seen at a lot of other tap rooms. Particularly, I appreciate the selection of beers from local breweries. (I also like that they have cider on tap!)
They were also super cool about splitting a tab for us, which was really nice. Some places are jerks about it, so that was another plus. Also, you can order from Tokyo Fro's Sushi joint right next door and eat at Capitol. That is pretty darn fantastic. Expect to see me there many Sundays for ALL-DAY happy hour!
My only complaint is that they don't really have the seating for large groups. It would be nice to see some larger tables in there.
What a frigging bottle selection, if you are a Beer Snob you are going to be HAPPY!
Nice selection of 20 beers on tap that will constantly rotate, ownership and staff is super friendly and Kenny knows lots and lots about beer which is great if you are a beer rookie.
Give these guys a shot and try something you have never had before and you will be surprised at the complexity of a fine beer....
