Carriage House Dining Room

Have not been there in 8 years. The liver starter was good. The it went downhill fast. Started with Brie en crouton which was average and much rooms on puff pastry, nothing to write home about. The $12 Caesar salad was a disaster, iceberg with a few parmasean shavings, zero anchovies even though it said on menu. Dressing sparse and tasteless. Then had grilled sirloin with horseradish sauce (mayo with small taste of horseradish) steak did not taste grilled at all and fries were again nothing to write home about. Desserts are left out and dry (carrot cake) chocolate cake nothing special. Left Nauseous. Not sure what happened to this place especially for price. Wait staff great and bread great too.

Snotty, horsey-set old school fun! This place is just weird enough in its pompous way that I really dig it. Come for one of the afternoon thingies, and watch the elite of Indiana parade around dressed up, while you skulk in the background (like me) waiting for the small plates of food to come your way. Great sociological observations here, a la C. Wright Mills.
Once inside, the fun escalates. The interior is like a hybrid of Midwest supper club chic, and the room in that scene where the Blues Brothers terrorize the high class diners. Forget all that. Because the food is excellent, and innovative for this forgotten part of the world. Unbelievable wine list, and the sommelier, God bless her, was one of the most knowledgeable I have ever met. Have dined here 3 times, each time a gem. I spend a fair amount of time hobnobbing with pals at Notre Dame, and this is one of the places to be.

Superb! Top notch! The best restaurant I've been to in South Bend so far, bar none.
