I had a Groupon for this place and invited some good friends for dinner of one that had to leave by 9pm to go to work so he thought 6:30 would have been safe enough but wrong it was.
The food is really good but if it is busy be prepared to wait at your table for about 2.5 to 3 hours for your main course. If service was better I would have given all 5 stars. This was the worst service I had ever experienced at a restaurant.
We had 4 in our group We had 2 appetizers Hummus and Spinach Artichoke Dip both tasted fantastic. 2 had the Chicken Kabob dish 1 had Salmon Kabob dish and I had the Stuffed Hawaiian Swai. We all said they tasted great.
If we would have BYOB it would have made the wait more palatable. 99% of the tables did just that. As someone else said the food is not precooked so expect the wait. I watched the cook who I believe is the owner cooks per table at a time.

Like Elkin whose review I read, I do feel bad writing this one, but it must be done.

I live a mile away from this place, and I always see it on Groupon. I finally bought one tonight, wanting to eat out on a Friday night.

My husband and I went here for the first time, and we got extremely disappointed.
It took ten minutes for the waitress to get our order, 25 minutes to serve the appetizer, an hour to serve the entree. After food was served, we had to ask for napkins and utensils.

The food was so tasteless. I love Mediterranean food. I've lived and traveled all over the Mediterranean region and unfortunately, the food here was the worst I've ever had. I am not sure where the four and five stars on these Yelp reviews are coming from.

My husband said I should give them a break, and should give credit to the owner who takes time to talk to the customers. Yes, I can give them credit for that.

But I think there is no excuse for the experience I had tonight - and obviously I'm not the only one. Very slow and poor service, less than tasty and overpriced food.

Went here tonight because of a Groupon, and were really not sure what to expect due to the mixed reviews it received. Well, we were not pleasantly surprised. It took us over two hours to eat! This is a small place that serves simple Mediteranean food, so it should not be this slow. At a point the only person in the kitchen, I think it was the owner, came out and talked with people at a table while the rest of us were waiting hours for food. You can see into the kitchen, and he was the only one in the kitchen cooking. We sat for ten minutes before anyone came to our table, and then when we gave our appetizer order it took twenty minutes for that to come out. The Caspian nachos were tasty, but still not worth the wait. The entrees which were chicken stuffed with spinach and cheese, and crab stuffed shrimp took another hour to come out. My wifes chicken was alright, but the shrimp was terrible. Over cooked, small, and I swear the shells were glued on, but at least the broccoli was under cooked. I love to support small local buisnesses and wanted to like this place, but they really need to learn how to operate a restaraunt. Slow service and dicey food, no thanks.

I gave a 3 star review after my first visit to the Caspian Cafe mainly because I needed to try it again as consistency is another important criteria in a good restaurant.

Don't assume you know what to expect because the restaurant is located in a small strip mall. It is quality food, freindly service and best of all BYOB!

The first time I went with just my husband. This time there was 7 of us. As you see I've bumped up my rating. They had our table ready as promised at 7 pm. Friendly, attentive service considering they had several tables to cover on a Saturday night. The first time we went was a lot slowera dn it was a Friday night. The food again as the first time... DELICIOUS. Crab cakes, a dozen freshly shucked blue point oysters, hummus, stuffed Hawaiin Swai (WOW!), king crab legs all FRESH and perfectly prepared. Other dishes we tried were the the kabobs (can never go wrong with those in this place) and the ribs were EXCELLENT. Good size protions. We topped everything off with a couple of wonderful deserts... a medeterranean cake and a lemon cake. We thought we were stuffed after our main course... apparently not.

Everyone in our party (none of them had been there before) were impressed and will definitley go back. As will we!

I've been meaning to come here for a year and a half, and I'm glad I finally made it over! My family came with a groupon on a Friday night. The owner was so friendly and the food was really delicious. I don't understand all the 1 star reviews.

The hummus was out of this world! I don't know if they are adding parsley or a lot of extra virgin olive oil, but it has a very fresh taste - definitely some secret ingredients and not the norm of chickpeas, tahini, garlic & olive oil. It was really so much better than anywhere else. They were out of falafel that night, but it just means I'll order it next time.

The portions were large - none of us were able to finish, but it's not an obnoxious amount of food. Prices were reasonable, especially for all the fish options. I love that it's BYOB and they only charge a corkage fee if you are using a discount. Fair enough for me!

Please support this gem in Gladstone Park! They definitely deserve it!

Went with my Groupon obsessed friend. Near my home Sunday night . I went in with zero expectations because of the prior 3 Groupon disasters.
The food was defiantly better than I expected. We ordered the goat cheese appetizer, I had the filet kabob and he had the shish kabob. Even though the goat cheese appetizer was mostly tomato sauce it was really good. Scooped it up with fresh hot pita bread. My kabob was so good, meat was lightly flavored nice portion size along with grilled veggies and Basmati rice were yummy.
My only complaint was that even though the place is BYOB, it actually states on the menu that they charge a cork fee for Groupon or other special offers. That alone would keep me from going back. Also, the pricing was a bit high for the atmosphere. Even though the owner and waitstaff were very friendly and attentive, if they just lowered the entree prices across the board by 2 dollars, they would not have to depend on Groupon and other specials.
The food quality was similar to Noon o Kabob, but for the price I will head back to Noon.

The food here is simply delicious. My folks treated my husband and me to dinner there last night. The ambiance may be a little lacking, but they make up for it with the great food and gracious service.

We had the nachos and goat cheese appetizers. Both great. I ordered the beef koobideh and it was so flavorful! My mom had the fillet kabobs. The meat was done just right and super tender. My dad's salmon was perfect. My husband definitely won the "best order of the night" award. He got the beef stew. Gormeh Sabzi (sp?). The flavors were so complex. Desserts - out of this world. My folks got the lemon mascarpone cake and we had the carrot cake.

All in all I say give it a try if you want to experience something new as the food is definitely more Persian than Mediterranean.

My wife and I live walking distance away and we have been here twice, both times finishing all the food (which is key, most people complain yet still eat everything).

The food was excellent both times, I had a pasta dish the second time and the catfish the first. The catfish, my first attempt at a catfish dish not cooked at home, was delicious. Great tasting and flaky like it should be. The pasta was cooked to perfection and so was the grilled chicken in it. The goat cheese in marinara is delicious as is the artichoke dip (I believe that is all it was)

Note it takes a little bit for the food to arrive, expect that since they are actually cooking it, if you want 5 minute meals there is a McDonald's down the street.

The service was a little lacking, but we have gone in there both times towards the end of the day. We both plan on going back again since they have always been great, really helpful when my wife was 8 months pregnant on one trip, and the food is great. I would rather support a smaller, neighborhood gem like this than a run-of-the-mill fast food joint.

We first came here because we had a http://restaurant.com certificate and love BYOB places. The food is good and prices are decent. We've never had to wait for a table, and the staff is extremely friendly. We've been here around a dozen times now, so we've probably tried everything on the menu. I highly recommend the filet kabobs and crab cakes!

I feel bad reviewing this place but it must be done. I came in with decent expectations because of previous reviews. But I was very disappointed.

For appetizer we got the mussels. Not terrible but far from delicious. And the fact that 1 out of 3 were closed, unacceptable. As for the entrees, we got the fillet kabob and stuffed chicken breast... tasty enough. Especially the chicken.

Overall the food was decent. However, one hour to get the food when there were only three other customers.... never again. Service was abysmal. If it wasn't for BYOB and Groupon I would have walked out.

p.s. Never get the fish. Someone else got it and let's just say I have smelled better fish washed up on Lake Michigan

Aye aye aye... where to start on this one...

My lovely groupon addicted boyfriend got the groupon for here. We went on a week day. Maybe we are food snobs, but I mean really... we have simple standards...

Dirty tables and seats. Poor ambiance.

Started out with a young girl as our server... then had the (i think) owner bring out the food (don't know what happened to the girl) and he just went around from table to table asking if "x" was what we ordered... uhm no.... how about you try out table numbers like every other restaurant ever.

+ = BYOB - = $4 cork fee (apparently for groupon holders)

Everyone keeps commenting on these mussels so they seemed like the obvious choice... sorry everyone, but you don't know what good mussels are - these are not them. Bland, boring, blah. Next.

One saving grace was the stuffed chicken - even though you could tell the spinach was previously frozen the combination was really tasty. Pretty sure the mashed potatoes were from a box.

The filet skewer was meh (i thought it tasted funny) - the rice tasted like plastic - the veggies were good (there's an idea... fresh ingredients!).

The fish that came out to the table near by stunk up the entire restaurant - yuck.

To top off the experience the owner outright asked the table of old people next to us that were raving about the food to write a yelp review... well i have your yelp review right here!

Owner:

- Get an appropriate staff
- Get organized
- Stop buying frozen food to serve to customers

We had the Groupon for 2. We decided on the mussels for our appetizer, and they were pretty good. We were given some pita bread to sip in the juice, and we really liked it. Nothing spectacular, but it was pretty good.
For our main course, we did the dinner for 2 and the owner upgraded our beef kabob to filet at no extra charge! The dinner came with chicken, beef and veggie kabob, grilled shrimp and stuffed swai. It also came with a side of basmati rice, and we ordered a side of lamb shank sauce to pour over it.
YUM YUM! Everything was delicous and the owner was very nice and incredibly attentive. The chicken was tender and moist and had an excellent flavor- the beef was juicy and cooked perfectly medium rare, but had a nice char on the outside. The shrimp and swai were both cooked to just the right texture, not too little, not too much, and it was certainly enough food for 3-4 people. We took about 1/2 of it home for leftovers.
We will certainly be back for dinner and will try their lunch specials!

I got a Groupon for 4. It included 2 appetizers and 4 entrees. We started off with the spinach and artichoke dip and goat cheese w pita. I ordered a veggie soup, which I felt had too much celery for me, so I gave to my son, who ate it all. The main courses were blackened catfish 1kids pasta and 2 fillet shush kabob.

I expected more flavor from my blackened catfish. I was quite disappointed. The outer was nice and crispy, but inside was very bland. My son had no complaints about his alfredo pasta (which I did taste and was nice!) Both my mother and sister enjoyed their fillet shish kabobs. I do want to come back and try another dish though.

Yet another groupon review. We were a party of four and understood that the groupon was supposed to be 1 per table. We informed the waitress that we wanted to use two groupons she responds "it's ok we will put it on two checks". Food gets ordered, wine is poured, jokes are told lol! But as we're wrapping up dinner the owner comes to our table to inform us that we can only use one groupon. Even after telling him what the waitress said he lets us know that what she said doesn't matter. After going back and forth he said ok he'll let it go, but we should not have had to argue about it in the first place! Especially when the restaurant was empty and most ppl that come here have some type of coupon.

As far as the food goes...it was mediocre. We ordered the stuffed chicken Breast (ok), filet mignon skewers (good), crab cakes (good). I wouldn't come back here though. Not worth the full cost of the meal.

Went here with a Groupon - we ordered shish-kabobs. They were very tender, and presented very beautifully. Had baklava for desert - huge piece (but I ate it all) which was better than most. Service was good, and we chatted with the owner for a while. We will most likely come back in the future.

So, I went here because I had bought a Groupon, and let me say, I was truly disappointed. It's located in a strip mall (nothing wrong with that) but it is really difficult to find because there is no sign on it. Then when we got there, the place was nearly empty, and the waiter/host took forever to come over to us. We ordered the calamari, and it was the worst calamari I have ever had. The squid was so overcooked it was almost impossible to eat. I ordered crab stuffed shrimp, and it was seriously disgusting. My boyfriend ordered kabobs (which I didn't think were terrible but he hated). Overall, the service was mediocre and the food was awful. I would never go back

What a hidden gem! The mussell appetizer was delish; especially with a side of pita to dip in the garlic butter!! The spinach and mozzarella stuffed swai and the salmon kabobs were both terrific! Also love that it's a BYOB!

It's tucked away in a strip mall so it's easy to miss! But it sure is nice to have off-street parking!

Did you ever think you were going to really love a place and then be sorely disappointed? Yeah, I guess we all have. We brought Mom here as part of her Mother's Day gift. I had a Groupon and the place wasn't too far from home, plus they had good feedback on their seafood. It seemed like a perfect convergence in time and space for a great meal.

We started off with the calamari appetizer. I should know better. 95% of the time calamari disappoints and this was one of those times. It was coated in something akin to ground up Special K, very coarse and dry. I didn't find the calamari itself overly chewy, but Mom did. Anyhow it fell way short of delicious.

Mom loves lentil soup, so we ordered her a bowl. It was beyond tasteless. It was a thick bowl of green puree that had little if any seasoning. We each took a spoon and left the rest. Mom being of her generation, took the rest home and doctored it up with spices and lemon and had it for lunch the next day.

Dinner was odd. Christopher had the shish kabob. The presentation was very nice, but they cook the meat and veggies on separate skewers, so none of the flavor is shared from meat to veggie and back. I tried some of the veggies and again they were totally bland. The meat was tender and well prepared, but once again, any semblance of flavor was lacking.

I had the blackened catfish. Of all the food, I think I got the best of it. The fish was well prepared and there was actually seasoning on it. The garlic mashed potatoes were quite good. On the other hand the presentation was very blah. It was just a hunk of fish and a plop of taters on the plate.

Mom ordered shrimp stuffed with crab meat. The presentation was wonderful and the portion was huge. It tasted ok, but nothing memorable.

We were all disappointed in our overall experience. Service was nothing spectacular. When the waitress asked us how the food was, we told her the soup was absolutely tasteless. Her response was to ask us if we wanted to take it home with us. LOL, thrifty Mom said yes.

Anyhow, I doubt we will be back. I wish them well, but when I buy food, I expect flavor to come with it.

I went there with my wife yesterday for dinner. It is located in a strip mall kind of surrounding. The place is not as big as it looks in some of the pics, but the food is really great. We started off with an appetizer of hummus and pita bread. It was one of the best hummus I have ever had. We liked it so much that we stuffed ourselves with an additional serving of pita bread and had little space left for the main course. My wife ordered the shrimp linguini with alfredo sauce while I ordered the chicken linguini with marinara. Both were perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. But we could not finish it and ordered for boxes to take it out. We signed off with a serving of baklava which was also mouthwatering. I don't know why there was only a couple at another table dining there , when we walked in. This place should be full !!! The service was good but I doubt if they have wait staff over there. It was the owner's daughter who took our orders followed by the owner to catered to us after she left. They were really nice and super courteous, but I think this place needs a couple of professional wait staff if they plan to draw in more people.

So my mom got me two groupons for this restaurant because she noticed it was near my house. My original thought was "hmmm Caspian Cafe, it's two blocks away and I've never even seen it????" Mom came through again! This place is terriffic! It was empty (not usually a good sign) but as soon as waitress (owners daughter) came over the excellent experience started. I got the Lamb Shank PERFECT, and my girlfriend ordered a kabob. I wanted to eat both meals! the Spinich Artichoke dip was the best I ever had, and we've been going there since. The owner, and the owners son were both as kind as they come. As I write this my girlfriend is picking up 3 orders of rice. Best rice ever! Hidden gem!!!!

I would never have entered this place if it wasn't for my http://Restaurant.com voucher, and I'm really glad I did! The service is extremely friendly and laid-back with a sort of Mom & Pop feel to it. The food was delicious- my BF was talking about when we would go back before he even finished eating. My only complaint was the hard booth seat (it's pretty cute and casual inside though) and the lack of baba ganouj on the menu.

Oh- and BYOB with no corkage fee!!!

I went here on a weekday night with a groupon. The restaurant was located in a little mart plaza.

The pictures of the decoration weren't correctly depicted in the pictures. The place had booths that could have came from a gyro cafe with tables that had Ponderosa chairs.

We started with the Caspian Nachos. It was a large, plate sized pita bread that was a little crispy on top with just enough hummus and a generous amount of feta cheese and some veggies. It was really tasty.

For dinner I had the Shrimp linguini with Alfredo sauce. It had 5 butterflied, grilled shrimp. The sauce was creamy and good but not great. The husbers got the Filet Kabob. The filet was cooked perfectly and so was the rice. It was flavorful and we both agreed v. delicious.

The service was a little slow and I wasn't sure why since the place was less than half full. I think the server was the owner and he seemed frazzled most of the time.

One of the perks was that the place was BYOB. With a groupon you face a $4 corkage fee but w/o a groupon or coupon it's free. I LOVE no corkage fee.

Overall the food was was good, the service could use some improvement, the environment was eh, the prices were reasonable (especially with the BYOB). I'd try this place again, especially if I see another Groupon :)

I went for lunch. I went for the cheeseburger special.

The cheeseburger was good. The patty seemed a little small. The toppings were fresh. The lettuce was a better type, not your typical iceberg.

I liked the fries. They were very good fresh cut type. They reminded me of home made fries.

The only problem I had was it seemed very hazy inside. I think there could be an issue with the ventilation.

I think I will return and try some of the other food.

Overall experience was wonderful...food was amazing...both my boyfriend and I had the Salmon and I never tasted a filet that was so moist. Lentil soup was out of this world. The owner was hosting and serving and was so nice to us. We finished this great dinner with a slice of fantastic carrot cake and some Persian tea. Can't wait to go back and try more things.

Came here with a Groupon on a quiet, weekday night. We were the only ones in the entire place. Our waiter was really friendly. The dishes weren't very attractive, but looks are deceiving. The chicken kabob was so flavorful, and wasn't dry as I was expecting. Rice was a little bland though. Calamari was nothing special, but I do appreciate that the food came out in a timely manner.

I only heard about this place since it was the daily Groupon. Since it seemed like a good deal I purchased it. I made sure I mentioned that we had one, so that there wouldn't be any confusion. After that it was all down hill from that. It took the waitress about 10 minutes to take my appetizer order and about 20 more minutes to take my entree order. I know it's a small place and not that many staff members, but there's no reason why people who arrived after me we given faster service. My appetizer, falafel, was burned, but I didn't send it back because I knew it would take too long. My dinner was surprising delicious, I had the chicken kabob. I made sure I informed the waitress and owner that I was treated unfairly and I wasn't sure if it was due to the fact that I had a Groupon or the color of my skin. I would never return nor encourage others to. You can find much better service and food else where.

The wife and I went here last night because she wanted salmon. After seeing a coupon on http://restaurant.com I decide to take the trip and try something new.

When we got there we saw two other tables seated, and my first thought was that this place "looked nicer in the pics." And there was a Definite odor that the wife described as "old folks home," whatever that smell like lol.

Anyway, the ambiance was o.k, dimly lit, it's BYOB which was cool. Kinda looked like a place that you would have to send your utensils back for being dirty and indeed our glass was dirty. Some places I feel comfortable enough to not use a straw, but this was not one of them. There was one guy working the floor, may have been the owner. He had a genuine, good spirit about himself, and I could tell he's the type that would want to remember every customers name.

Appetizers: Wife had ceasar salad, and we ordered Spinach and Artichoke Mini-Bites. I was curious as to what "S&A mini bites" were. Well, I got my answer. A spinach & artichoke /w cheese mixture, placed on a sesame seed hogie roll, and cut up into small squares.......eh. I felt like something I would make at home when the fridge was running low. It tasted ok though. The ceasar salad did taste like dressing out the bottle, the croutons tasted ok, the leafs seemed limp though.

Dinner: Wife had turkey burger w/ fries (even though she came for the Salmon), and I had Stuffed Chicken w/ Broccoli. She said she choose Salmon cause she figured a place like this probably orders in bulk, and their items may "sit longer than their supposed to", so she felt safer with the Turkey burger. I couldn't argue if she was just being to caution or not, but when her meal came and she asked for Mustard, the bottle did have that "old dark yellow/black crust" around and inside the lid......yea that didn't help her view of the place. She ate her turkey burger which seemed average, (i had a bite), seems hard to mess up a turkey burger. My Stuffed Chicken was good, the chicken was well seasoned, but I've had better broccoli from the frozen section at Target.

Dessert: Wife ordered coffee, I had some "Super cake" which had layer of 5 different types of cakes. The place they get their cake from seems ok, nothing stood out as spectacular, but it wasn't a letdown either. The first cream my wife opened up did look like that "sour cream that you forgot was in the fridge", and looked like yogurt. Yea, that about sums this place up.

Overall: We felt like this guy should be on Restaurant Impossible. The Waiter/Owner?, was a super nice guy, and I wish him all the best. I left 20% tip mostly cause I felt bad, and it seemed like he was struggling. Maybe this place will fill somebodies food void, but not ours.

Why 2 stars? Cause yelp said 2 stars meant "I've experienced better"
3 stars = A.OK, which it wasn't
4 stars = I'm a fan, which i'm not
5 stars = As good as it gets, which it isn't

So...

Food -- I decided on the crab cake sandwich but when the waitress arrived she informed me that they were out. :( This is something you should tell a customer before they pour over the menu for 10 minutes. That also means that my other option, the crab cake appetizer was out too. Since I don't eat meat, that limited my options and I went with the veggie sandwich (something I eat everyday and thus, was trying to avoid). They make a good veggie sandwich though so I'll forgive them; the patty is moist & flavorful -- but PLEASE, start offering some condiments to go with it, the rest was very dry.

I also had the "nachos" which were pretty good but not great, they're missing something.

My boyfriend took some Hawaiian Swai to go and I must say, that was absolutely delicious...the next day. I didn't get a chance to try it fresh but, I assume that if it tastes that fantastic after the microwave fries it, it must have been absolutely scrumptious when it was fresh. I think if I were to come back, it would definitely be for the fish as the other stuff was mediocre. However, for $6, I'll take a mediocre sandwich (as long as they start seasoning the grilled veggies!) :) TRY THE SWAI!!

Oh, oh. One thing that did bother me was the stares! I don't know if the two women sitting at the table near-by were the owner's wife and daughter or what but, I caught them staring in my direction a few times while whispering and attempting to look nonchalant-- NOT COOL!

This place is just charming. We went there on a whim and in part because of the great reviews here on Yelp, and I'm so glad we did. It's a smallish place at the north end of a strip mall on Milwaukee. The kitchen is semi-open to the dining room because the last restaurant in there was one of those Hot Brown Food places where you could sit at the counter. This doesn't really work against the ambiance of the place, though; it's kind of fun watching people mill around with your food.

For the rest, the room has obviously undergone a conversion. There are booths and free-standing tables, and several of the tables have nicer chairs and the differences give the room a kind of Bohemian look that I enjoy.

The menu isn't huge, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. There's a distinct emphasis on fish, and for good reason; the owner worked at a well-known local fish house for many years, and he knows his stuff. The grilled tilapia was moist and flavorful as was the Swai (a fish I'd never tasted before, or even heard of) stuffed with cheese and spinach. But there are also a number of meat choices with steaks, ribs and kebabs, and a few chicken entrees as well as a vegetarian plate. There are also sandwiches and salads, and unless you're a far pickier eater than my friends who are notoriously picky eaters, you'll be fine.

For me, the standout dish was the Caspian nachos: wedges of pita spread with hummus and sprinkled with tomatoes, cucumber and homemade feta. Yup, they make their own feta cheese at Caspian Cafe, and I have to tell you that it's, hands down, the best feta I have ever eaten. On top of being delicious and so generous that three of us shared it as an appetizer, it was only $5! In fact, almost everything on the menu is incredibly reasonable.

The service was good, but unfortunately we arrived not too long after a very large party, and the food was a bit slow to come out of the kitchen. Nothing problematic, but it really keeps me from evaluating the service under average conditions. I suspect it's pretty good. Everyone there is friendly and helpful; you couldn't ask for a pleasanter dining experience.

If I have a quibble it's minor. The linguini was more done than I like it, and the basmati rice was not as flavorful as I would have hoped. Neither was bad, they simply didn't appeal to me to the same degree as the rest of the meal.

I checked GrubHub and they do deliver, though not to my neighborhood. I'm sad about that. But I really intend to get back there as often as I can because they make healthy eating delicious, and that's always a good thing.

Okay, here's a real review [rolls eyes]:

Good food. Had the fish, crabcakes are super, meats are good quality and tender. Rice is fluffy and fantastic. Good portions. Would give 5 stars but meats (Shish & Filet) could use more seasoning IMO. Would look forward to working through the menu when in the hood. This place could grow on me.
