I was at Cesars a week ago with a few friends and really liked their lime margarita on the rocks. Â Not too sweet and packs a good punch. Â My friend ordered a few chicken tacos a la carte that she said they were pretty good. Â I ordered the big nacho plate. Â Wasn't very good, but the margaritas were strong enough to get away with it. Â I have to say that I am impressed with the place after I had a bill discrepancy that I noticed while sober the next day. Â They had added the 18% gratuity to our 3 table bill, which I wasn't expecting and had tipped on top of the total bill. Â I only noticed it the next day, since I thankfully grabbed all the receipts and rechecked, because I thought the bill was suspiciously high. Â I called that day and Sergio told me very politely that the manager would be in later and would call me back. Â Steve called me later that day, apologized and took care of the refund, hassle free. Â I appreciate their promptness and attention to customer service. Â I will definitely be back.
Review Source:Cesar's delivered exactly what the boyfriend and I were looking for: hot Mexican comfort food and a delicious margarita (obvious at this point). Â The service was decent, the margs were strong (at least for me, heh), and the mole sauce was good. Â I would say it's a bit overpriced for the quality, but I would still come back here.
Review Source:I have lived around the corner from here for years and been on a number of occassions. I didn't bother to read any of the reviews below so if I am repeating other things that have been said, sorry about that. If you go on a Friday, Saturday night, they will probably be packed and you may have to wait a bit but I would say it's worth it. Their food is your typical mexican food (not horrible, not great) but their margaritas are what they are known for. I normally leave feeling pretty good after one of those but if I have two, it's REALLY good. They also have tons of groupons so if you ever think of going here, you can normally get 50% off if they have a groupon. This is always a good choice in my opinion but go and see for yourself.
Review Source:I am never mad when I go to Cesar's for a few reasons. Â First, I expect it to be decent, but not mind-blowing, Americanized Mexican food. Â I do not expect authenticity. Â I do not expect to be impressed the way I am at, let's say, Frontera. I expect there to be cheese and meat and sauce. Â I expect the margaritas to be strong and for the crowd to be a little pedestrian and unhinged.
I've been here twice, had fajitas and the enchiladas suizas, and fundido to start. Â I was moderately pleased with everything I ordered. Â It met my expectations. Â They are not stingy about chips and salsa, although the salsa is a little thin and over onion-ed. I feel like the margaritas were a lot stronger at the other location on Clark. Â Honestly, last time I was there, I did not need the strongest margarita of my life, but they were a little weak.
Service was decent. Â The cash only lounge is great for a large group or a party. Â And they even scared up a candle for my friend's birthday cake. Â So, in conclusion, as long as your expectations are placed at the right level, you will have a lovely time at Cesar's!
Mexican food is probably one of my fave cuisines. The food here was typical. Not any better than the hole in the wall spot I go to. Usually with mexican restaurants if I don't see it packed with the mexican people or that all the employees speak fluent english I don't go in expecting much. Especially having been to Mexico on a few occasions and tasting the real stuff. Ordered the largest margarita and it didn't kill me which was a disappointment. I'd still go back though.
Review Source:The food at the Cesar's on Clark is bad, everyone knows it but no one cares because they go there to get drunk. Their domain name is http://killermargaritas.… and the huge neon "Killer Margaritas" sign is bigger than the smaller neon "Cesar's" sign on their building. Fair enough, we get it.
Now everyone knows that you can get good Mexican food at one of the thousand taquerias on just about any block in Chicago, but sometimes you want to go to a place that will serve you good-enough Mexican fare and a tasty margarita. Cesar's on Broadway used to be in our Mexican-with-bar rotation in East Lakeview along with El Jardin, El Mariachi, etc.
A month or two ago Lynn K. and I had a pretty bad dinner at Cesar's. Our first at that location. Chalking it up to bad luck, we went again tonight. Same thing. My "steak super burrito" barely had any steak on it. I'm not kidding -- it was all tortilla and lettuce. And the steak I did encounter was bad: Chewy and flavorless.
Looking back, it should've been clear: They've been on Groupon forever. Successful businesses aren't on Groupon. We also go an email from Cesar's a couple of months ago saying that they were making the margaritas at that location EVEN STRONGER. Clearly they aren't trying to bring in people to enjoy their food.
Sadly, Cesar's is now out of the rotation.
If you want strong margaritas, go to Cesar's. If you want anything better than mediocre food, go elsewhere.
We went about 6pm on a Saturday night, so it was fairly busy, but we felt the service could have been better. Â When we were seated we were given shorter menus that didn't have the entrees we wanted after looking at the full menu while waiting to be seated. Â We asked the waiter for the full menu, but he never brought one so we just ordered from memory. Â The waiter implied those would take longer giving us the impression they wanted to get us out quickly. Â However the entrees arrived in a reasonable amount of time and were very good. Â The killer margarita, while good, really lived up to it's name. Â It was so strong that I couldn't even finish it. Â I got buzzed after just a few sips and was feeling pretty drunk by half way. Â It must have had 3 or 4 shots of tequila in it.
Review Source:Had a party in upstairs special seating area. Limited menu. Ordered a chicken torta and passion-fruit margarita. When our food finally came...literally took nearly an hour and the waiter got some of our orders wrong, why the eff did my torta come with a side of mayo??? My torta itself tasted fine, except it tasted like a chicken sandwich from BK. Never tasted anything less Mexican...wasn't expecting Pilsen quality but damn. Then the flavor of my margarita tasted so weird that it actually made me throw up...yeah they're "killer" alright esp. its price. At least the waiter knew she messed up and gave the birthday girl free shots...
Review Source:How have I not been hanging out here the ENTIRE time I've lived in Chicago? Â The margs are killer, in case you haven't noticed, and that's the best way they could be. Â The margs will knock you on your butt, so prepare to public trans or cab it back to your house when you're done.
First, they have a "light menu", which is awesome. Generally, a lot of Mexican food is fried and has a lot of refried beans all over the place, which is not conducive to the "health conscious" folks out there. The burrito bowl (a la Chipotle) was an excellent choice and super flavorful. The price was also totally reasonable (under $9) and you can add avocado for a small charge. Â
The margaritas are really super killer, so be careful. Â I recommend getting a pitcher since it's the most price-friendly, especially if you're splitting with a few friends. Â I love the classic margarita, on the rocks and a glass with tons of extra salt. Â There's way too many choices of flavors here, so go crazy if you want. Â
Honestly, delish. Â Every time I've come, it hasn't been packed, which is nice. Â I could see this place becoming full of Lakeview douches later in the evening, but the 8:00 p.m. hour seems to be reasonably busy without too much douchery.
No idea what all the hype was about. Never been to a place where they charge you for extra chips and salsa, but this place did! Really, I'm not a hard person to please when it comes to food but seriously... The most unauthentic Mexican cuisine I have ever had. Â Their small guacamole is about 5 bucks, you get a tablespoon full. Â The tamales - just don't even think about ordering them - unless of course you like cheese melted on top of a pile of dry tamale mix. Â I've had better salsa from Aldi's.
I know I'm being a complete Negative Nancy but it isn't that difficult to get Mexican right. Â And I really wanted to like them.
Anyway, glad I had a Groupon but I won't ever be coming back to Cesar's - even for the "killer margaritas" which was $11 and you get about 6 oz. of margarita. Totally not worth it. Â Go to Los Napoles.
I am a huge fan of mexican food and margaritas!---not so much Cesars Mexican food and Margaritas though....
For a margarita that was not the best it was I believe $11...... SERIOUSLY!?
I prefer to drive out to the Goldcoast area and hit up the mexican restaurant there called Blue Agave which I recently found out about... Their margaritas are $8 and gets you wasted off of one....
I had the mango margarita on the rocks and it was sour and not something I enjoyed....
I had the Spinach, Cheese and tomatoes Enchiladas and they were ehhhhh...
Thank God I had one of those groupons....
The good thing was that they came around with a cup of this pasta soup on the house! It was actually pretty tasty....
My boyfriend and I love this place. Â We've been going for years now, and since it's a 15-minute walk from where we live, we end up going pretty regularly. Â We never pay full-price for food/drinks, which is nice, because there is always a Groupon or online deal, so make sure to check before you go!
(Fair warning: Though the menus are the same at both locations coupons/Groupons only apply to the Broadway location - I found out the hard way that the Clark/Belmont location will NOT honor them.)
The margaritas are HUGE and DELICIOUS and they come in every flavor (I've tried them all and would recommend everything except the tamarindo). Â Depending on who's pouring, they can be pretty strong! Â Me gusta mucho!
My guy like the fish tacos, I'm all about the chicken flautas, and my brother always gets the super burrito, which winds up being about the size of your head! Â We never go home hungry, that's for sure. Â Sometimes we go with a group of friends after a show (walk-in table of 5-10 people) or just as a couple and are always seated within a couple of minutes.
Service is fast, and leave a little to be desired in the "customer service" department, but when I'm a margarita deep, I never seem to mind. Â Really, doesn't affect the overall quality of my night, so why worry?
Wanna forget a work week from hell?
Stop by Cesar's and to kill the pain with a mango margarita and a flight of tequila.
Yes, TEQUILA FLIGHT.
Three shots of quality tequila are served in fancy shot glasses garnished with lime, all on a platter. Â Finish them off and you won't be feeling the stress anymore. Â Nor will you be able to feel your face, but that's just a teeny side effect!
Cesar's is the place to go when you want to get your drink on. Â The food is OK for the price. Â Thanks to the Killer Margaritas, I don't remember having anything more than chips and salsa the last time I was there.
One thing I do recall --- I'm not a fan of the guacamole. Â There were huge chunks of onion and tomatoes that seemed to take over the poor avocado. Â
I'll definitely be back for more liquid therapy, but if I'm craving Mexican food I will look elsewhere.
I paid $5 dollars for $40 worth of food and drink (first time Grouponing) and will always remember this as the worst Mexican food I've ever had.
The service wasn't polished, but wasn't lacking, and the margaritas were what we really came for. No complaints about the drinks, really.
The food; the chips were either purchased or stale, and the entrees seemed to be garnished with the meat of your choice, rather than filled.
I used to frequent the location on Clark, and remember going back often, so it was probably closer to edible. Maybe margaritas clouded my judgment.
I don't enjoy trashing a business, but I have to go on record and say that this was the most disappointing meal I've had in a long, long time.
Margaritas were delicious! Went here with a friend last night and ordered a pitcher (I think pitchers are $34... much better deal than individual margaritas if you want more than one). We got lime flavored so that we could have a basis for judging their deliciousness... they are definitely not made from a mix.
Chips and salsa were delicious and fresh. We also got some complimentary soup at the beginning of the meal. I ordered the mini burritos with chicken and salsa verde which were delicious. The server was also very quick, accommodating, and helpful with the to-go meal my friend we ordered at the end.
We left full and a little tipsy, the best way on a cold night!
I'm giving this place four stars not because of their food, but because of their Margaritas!!! The drinks there are the bomb!! They taste good and give you a great buzz, but becareful as fruity as the drinks may seem they sure do sneak up on you hehe. Mango & Guava Margaritas are my favorite!! The food is not bad either, but not the most authentic mexican I've had. Chips & Salsa are always fresh and if you are an avocado fan definitely get their guacamole.
Review Source:I have seen this place so many times and always wanted to go check it
out. Finally I went there yesterday for dinner with a friend. We
wanted to sit outside at the patio since it was so nice outside. The
server said that its cash only if we sit outside, and if we want to
pay by card then we will have to sit inside. They do have an ATM
inside incase you want to get cash out (though its not chase). We
ended up going to the walgreens, which was just a block away to get
cash out of chase ATM. I did not try margarita since it was a week
night but I have heard they are pretty good. My friend ordered steak
with extra veggies and a few sides. I ordered the chicken quesadillas.
It was really bland, and just about average. They gave chips and salsa
on the house. Salsa was decent. The ambience of the place was nice,
servers were warm and friendly though the service was a lil slow and
food was plain average. I think next time I go there, I will just
order margaritas and chips and salsa.
I just read a few of the sub-par reviews and I must say, I don't know where these people are coming from!
My friends and I have frequented Cesar's on Broadway for almost 2 years now. The food is fantastic - authentic Mexican. The Killer Margaritas are so yummy! Although, one time my girl friends and I made the mistake of ordering a Mega-sized margarita one night. Too much tequila!
Seriously though, this place is solid. The staff is friendly, the food and drinks are worth repeat visits.
So good!
Overpriced for underpar food and drinks.
$10 for a "killer margarita", are you joking?! that thing was tiny, there's definitely nothing remotely killer about it. Ordered the chicken "super nachos". Once again, nothing super about the nachos. There was 15, maybe 20, chips on the plate.
Only good thing I can say about this place was they have good salsa. Other than that, I'd say skip it.
I was very disappointed with Cesars. They did not have any customer service and my waitress agreed to everything I ask but when the bill came it was a whole different story. I should've listened to the gentlemen disappointed as he walked out. The food is not anything to be excited about. Please drink a whole margarita before trying their food or otherwise it will be a waste. Do not celebrate your birthday there with family and friends because it is nothing special. JUST DRINK AND LEAVE.
Lucky Cesars is on group on, that is the ONLY reason people will try it.
Plus 1 star for being able to manage a VERY rowdy football team on a busy afternoon. Â We were looking for a quick place to enjoy a snack and some drinks and found it at Cesars.
The drinks were ok priced.. The server didn't upsell on the sizes which I found kinda weird.. We would have appreciated the 1 dollar difference between a Jumbo and regular..
The food was pretty good for the most part... I felt like we got different batches of salsa during our meal.. one was mild and another was VERY spicy.. but they didn't indicate that happened so not sure how that happened. Â
I recommend the upstairs lounge and patio for a fun early evening but remember it's cash only up there!
A-Ok just about sums it up...I was neither disappointed or blown away by Cesars. Â I had a friend in town and we decided some margaritas would be a fantastic way to kick off the evening. Â It also didn't hurt that I had the groupon - gotta be economical!
We each got a mega killer margarita...mine was Passion Pommarita and my friend got the mango. Â Both were tasty and quite potent! Â I ended up ordering a small of the Blue Curacao after we ate not because I needed more liquor but because I kept seeing it and wanted to try it! Â We were feeling no pain by the time we left.
The food was okay and it came out quickly so not sure if we just came at the right time or the kitchen has improved from other reviews. Â I had the steak mini wraps and my friend has the spinach quesadillas - nothing wrong with the food but again not particularly blown away by it.
I'm not sure I would go out of my way to come back but I certainly wouldn't say no if someone suggested it.
I came here for the first time today to hang out with some friends, have a small bite to eat, and try some of these killer margaritas... and they killed me indeed, but mostly because I react so poorly to tequila, unfortunately. I'm sure that I was quite drunk after one glass of the orange passion pommarita, and the rest of my (perhaps delighted) friends had to finish off the rest of the pitcher. The $34 pitcher definitely had a good portion and I would say could be shared among four or five people.
The good part, I would say, pretty much ended there.
We ordered the super nachos starter, which on the menu stated would be a meat-topped "larger portion" of the regular nachos. I'm not sure how small the portion was for the regular nachos, but based on what we had, I think the regular nachos appetizer probably would come with four tortilla chips.
The waitress was awkward. She did not smile once at us or make any attempt to engage in conversation at ALL, not even a generic "how are you girls doing?" We had to wait an extraordinarily long time to have our check processed, and then we had to wait some more to get our credit cards back. During that time, another waitress came up to us and offered us a menu. What?
I've definitely had better food and service elsewhere, and the supposedly killer margaritas are not amazing enough for me to want to come back.
I purchased a Groupon for this location and brought my friend from out of town on his first night in Chicago. I was embarrassed when the service was slow (took more than an hour and twenty minutes to get our food) and the wait staff was neglectful and rude. After our treacherous dining experience, we asked to have our bill split and were told that they would not do it. We asked to talk to the manager and this joker wearing a puffy vest approached our table, claiming to be the manager, and treating us rudely.
I will never visit this location again and neither should you.
Cesar's....where should I start?
It was supposedly an evening to bid farewell and speak of futures and dreams. Cesar's is on a completely different theme. Our original intentions was to dine at L**** but only to realize they are no longer open on Sunday evenings. Bummer! My friend then suggested trying out Cesar's since they're almost always packed on weekends.
We arrived and I noticed the full name: "Cesar's: Home of the Killer Margaritas." Hmm...okay.....word of advice is to never entrust your dinner options to a friend who is food-illiterate....
To move on, we were promptly seated and we had: complimentary nachos, complimentary soup, Cesar's taco dinner, and handmade tamales. The complimentary soup was a light chicken and tomato broth simmered with angel hair pasta and topped with cilantro. It had a very limey flavor and the angel hair was in tiny shreds. I probably finished half of the cup. As for the entrees, I had my hard-shell tacos served with steak. The steak was well-marinated and a bit chewy. The taco was filling and stuffed, and average in an overall sense. My friend had the handmade tamales served with chicken. I didn't get a chance to try it but she really enjoyed it.
On a lighter note, we didn't get a chance to try their killer margaritas. If we had, it would've probably been a more enjoyable evening but it was a Sunday evening and we weren't in the mood for alcohol. Some of the other tables around us disagreed and helped themselves to several rounds of margaritas and rowdiness.
We didn't know where to go in Lakeview for dinner one night that would be kid-friendly. We were a party of 4 with a small child and saw a stroller in the window of Cesar's, so we figured what the hell, we'll try it. I had a very mixed experience here, but finally decided on only two stars because, yeah, "Meh. I've experienced better."
First, the pros: We were seated right away on a Saturday evening. It was early, like 5:30 or so, but we did not have to wait. The service was good. Our waiter was attentive and friendly and made suggestions -- when we weren't sure what to order -- that turned out to be great. The margaritas *were* "killer." I had one mango, frozen margarita ($10 for the smallest size, the "large"), and was tipsy before my dinner arrived. We had lots of chips and salsa, and the salsa was quite tasty. I know it's hard to mess that up, but I've had crappy salsa. This has cilantro, which I love.
The cons: When we got upstairs, it was a madhouse. Children were crying and screaming, and I felt like maybe we'd been seated in a section set aside specifically for people with kids. I realize that the parents are responsible for their kids, and the staff at the restaurant can only do so much, but I seriously considered just turning around and walking out after a couple of minutes. I hesitated by my chair for a while before I could decide if I actually wanted to stay. Lastly, the menu said "cash only" but they aren't, and no one bothered to tell us.
The neutral: The food was so-so. My fish tacos were meh (dry, and the sauce was tangy but sort of flavorless), but my husband raved about his giant burrito, our friends said their dinners were pretty good.
I'm still trying to decide if I would actually return. On the one hand, I have a kid, and I try to be sensitive to other diners. So would I go back, considering it was pretty kid-friendly? I don't know. Another peeve is that their menus have "CASH ONLY" printed in huge, bold letters. My husband and one of our friends took money out of the ATM to pay for dinner after we ate because we didn't have any cash. Afterward, we found out they take credit cards, but "just haven't printed new menus." That's irritating.
With margaritas as big as your head in so many flavors, a drink is a plenty good reason to go to Cesar's.
The food is pretty good and they have some great brunch options. Â The mole is very dark and is far better than you would expect!
They usually have a groupon available and there's plenty of space if you have a larger group.
Absolutely best Mexican I have ever experienced! First off before we even walked in, I said I wanted to sit upstairs so we could look at the street from above and they actually sat us there without me even having to say anything, which was really cool.
The chips and salsa are so good! Dig into that for sure! We came for a Groupon which also helps make it a great experience because our bill was $55 down to $15...awesome right?!
We had a pitcher of the killer margaritas, they were amazing, which I think is the usual here :) After a few of those we had our dinners, I had the taco dinner...soooo good!
We stayed until closing on a Sunday night but they didn't seem to mind. I would definitely check this place out!!!
I think its funny that the two Killer Margarita joints are like 10 mins away from each other....
The only difference I see between the two is that at this location there is an upper and lower level. I got a seat at the bar on the lower level and were joined by two friends. We did the damn thang on some big ass margaritas and left with a nice buzz...the way a Saturday nite should be done!
Not a place I would think about trying the food though.
I've been to Cesars, and this specific location, many times. Â In the past, I would have given it 1 or 2 stars. Â BUT, I don't know if they changed management or are just turning over a new leaf but it has greatly improved!
The food isn't the best mexican food. Â I'm sure you see that in other reviews, and it's true. Â It sure isn't. Â Kinda surprising, but whatever.
The drinks are good. Â They are a little expensive for what they are, but their still good. Â Kinda sugary, but still good.
And the service is very good now. Â My waiter was very attentive, very nice, very hospitable. Â This was my biggest gripe in the past--the service used to be terrible. Â In the past, it would take forever for everything; rude servers; and they upcharged everything. Â Now, it really seems like they got rid of the bad apples. Â The place was packed, and no one seemed to be unhappy from my view. Â Definitely a good change. Â If I go to a Cesars, i'd go back to this local (bc I used to go to the one on Clark to avoid this one).
