Overstuffed, small table approx. 20"x 48", big enough for 4 adults, but tickets sold for 6 adults plus all the ice chest, bags etc. we had seats 3 &4 at table 34. we got to our table 45 mins before the concert only to find the table was full of 4 people and there gear. I told them we had seats 3&4 on the ticket. They said, sorry, but its 1st come 1st serve and that we would need to sit on the other side of the table either with our backs to the stage to use the table or without use of the table but facing the stage. We really could not do either. If we turned our chairs to face the stage, we had nowhere to put our feet because of the people sitting at the table in front of us. I went to the ticket office, the lady was nice, but said it is 1st come 1st serve at our table. She said she could move us to the very back of the Amphitheatre. I told her I paid $472 for the two tickets on stub hub and was not will to sit so far away. I went back down to table 34 with an usher. The people sitting at the table moved some of there gear and moved a little closer. This allowed us ( with special permission) to set back to back in the asle. Chastain Park should never sell 6 tickets on a table that will only seat 4 adults. Very sad.

I like that it's nestled away in a neighborhood. And, it also has pretty accessible parking, though I'm sure the artist performing can radically change that. Overall, it's a nice place!

Chastain is a polarizing experience.  You can see from the negative reviews that, if you don't know what to expect from your fellow concert goes OR if you know but feel strongly against their actions ... you're going to have a bad time.  Please, know what to expect before going there and decide to spend your money accordingly.

For myself, Chastain is a uniquely beautiful concert experience that I love to repeat whenever one of my favorite artists end up playing there.

So here is what to expect in one slightly run on statement - the audience at Chastain is there to socialize, eat dinner and enjoy themselves while being serenaded by whomever is on stage.

The majority of people who come to Chastain bring coolers full of food.  They'll get there early and after taking everything out, upend the cooler and use it as a table.  If they've booked one of the tables they'll usually bring candles, table clothes and flowers as well.  It's a whole thing and it's tradition and you have to respect it.  It's what Chastain is.

Yes -- WHILE the artist is playing the concert, people will drink and talk and laugh and make merry.  The way I see it, this is the one concert venue where we ask the artist to entertain US.  I think a lot of us go to someplace (let's say, The Fox) and we feel that WE'RE fortunate just to see the singer.  Chastain holds to the reverse attitude -- if you're the artist, ENTERTAIN me.  If you play a boring song from your newly released CD that no one knows?  I'm going to drink some more, rummage in my cooler and chat with my friend.  If you play that hit from 10 years ago that made me fall in love with you?  You have my undivided attention.

If you come to have an intimate experience with a few thousand other people -- to enjoy the camaraderie of good food and good company under the stars -- then that's what you'll get.  I have never met friendlier people.  Every time I've gone everyone around me is sharing food and helping everyone get to their seats and being friendly.  This last time it started raining and I had several offers to share umbrellas from those surrounding my stupid-wet-"no it's not gonna rain"-self.

If you come to Chastain to have an intimate experience with the artist - it has to be a GOOD artist.  Case in point - taking my mother to a Harry Connick Jr. concert for her birthday I was treated to one of the best experiences at Chastain that I've had.  But ya know why?  Because Harry is a partier.  He understands.  We're there to have fun, he's there to have fun.  Case in point - before one song he addressed the audience, "I've been playing Chastain for 20 years now and I know how it works.  I've never asked for quiet from y'all in those 20 years but for this song I'm asking it.  This is a special song dear to my hear and for just this once, I would love for all y'all to pay close attention."  Silence.  I've never heard Chastain be completely silent before.  Pin drop silent.

    ...

Then Harry couldn't remember the lyrics to the second verse, had to start over twice and said the silence flustered him. :)

A good time was had by all.

Quick Tip - for my money, the best seats in the house are the "box" seats surrounding the middle tables.  Between the middle table setup and the outer stepped risers there are five little rows of seats and I love them.  They're close enough to the stage to feel a connection with the singer but they're not the crazy priced tables.  Especially if you're just going with one other friend - they're great.

It's a beautiful venue, no doubt about it. I despise this place with a passion. I generally only go anymore if I'm comped. It gets a one star review because the audiences are almost always disrespectful to the point of distraction. For some reason many of the people who attend shows at Chat-stain seem to think that overpaying for a ticket gives them the right to chatter incessantly through the show until they hear a familiar song that they can stand up and fist pump to (usually while still yammering). And God forbid there's an opening act you love, because that performer will be competing with all the latecomers arriving and setting up their freaking feasts and candelabrae (as per Levon Helm opening for John Prine a few years ago).
True story. About 20 years ago I somehow ended up spending a day with Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal before their Spoleto Festival concert at the Cistern at the College of Charleston (during which show you could hear the proverbial pin drop, by the way). We were walking to the venue after dinner and I asked Rosanne if she had ever played at the Chastain Park Amphitheatre. She stopped dead in her tracks, wheeled on me, and hissed through gritted teeth, "I HATE that f***ing place!".
Lyle Lovett to Chastain audience, 1993: "This is lovely. I can hear your voices but I can't hear your words.
This goes on at concert halls and bars and movie theaters all over the country. There seems to be a generation of people who grew up in front of a television thinking that their every utterance is a pearl. And dear God, don't dream of shushing one of these a**holes. Even the ones who aren't completely alcohol besodden are likely to get belligerent. It doesn't seem to matter if it's a younger crowd or a bunch of Buckhead Betties with dyed blonde hair and store-bought t*ts and their cargo shortsed Grecian Formulaed corporate titan husbands. Feh.
Oh, and the parking and traffic situations are a nightmare, and the beers and wine are overpriced.
I'll take Red Clay Theater, Eddie's Attic, and occasionally the Variety Playhouse, thank you.

Saw a concert here a while back and have tried a few times to revisit the venue but the timing has not worked out. There is something cliquish about the place and also I am not in ATL very often. The parking situation is a nightmare. For an outdoor venue it is OK. Seems aged, could use some renovation.

I so much enjoy the experience at Chastain Park!  My husband is a big music fan.  Me, I am a big fan of spending quality time with friends and family.  This venue allows us to to BOTH at once.
If you prefer a concert where the music is too loud to think, much less chat comfortably with the person next to you, don't go here
If you prefer overpriced bar drinks while you stand up and wait for the show rather than having your own wonderful food and drinks that you brought in and set up on your own table while you are comfortably seated, then don't go here.
If you prefer waiting for some undefined period of time until the band decides to come on stage (racking up the cost of those expensive drinks!), rather than knowing when the music will start and end, then please don't go here.
Me, I happen to love-love-love an atmosphere that allows me to chat with friends, bring my own food and wine, along with linens, candles, and flowers.  Do I bring my best things?  Of course not, but it is nice having a pretty environment with things that are visually appealing while tough enough for outdoor use.
Yes, it is outdoors!  How lovely to sit in a warm Atlanta evening outdoors, listening to music, chatting with dear friends, eating yummy cheeses and sipping delightful wines in softly fluttering candlelight!
One of the comments below rating Chastain low and made some comment about 1%-ers.  I'm certainly not in the top 1% of income or wealth, but I am guessing that 99% or more of the country doesn't have the delight of a place like Chastain!  I'm very happy to be in the 1% that does.
    Highly recommend!

Won free tickets to see Big Bad Vooodoo Daddy here. Awesome!!!! This is an entirely outdoor venue so prepare for rain if it is in the forecast.  it was this evening, but luckily it never materialized.  Parking is not so fun.  There are a number of pay lots, but not many free options. I luckily got to the Park really early and there was some free parking left. You can bring food and drink into the Amphitheater.  I really wish I had known that. The do have a concession stand.  I got some popcorn and a hard blueberry lemonade. I rarely find those hard blueberry lemonades so I was quite happy. Prices are overpriced, of course. There was an open dance floor this evening and people took advantage of it.  It was a very fun evening; everyone, including myself, was enjoying themselves.

Come here if you want to be harassed and assaulted by entitled middle-aged people who have no manners and no class. I have been to plenty of concerts around Atlanta in plenty of venues (Masquerade, Phillips Arena, Tabernacle, etc), and I have NEVER experienced such bad behavior from an audience.

I came here for a concert. It was my first time there and I thought it'd be a great experience. The venue is beautiful, in a safe and clean part of town, and I had really wonderful seats facing the stage. The amphitheater itself has plenty of space. I was also super excited for this concert because it was my favorite artist and I saved up my money to buy these tickets.

The cons began right away with the  parking. It was $15 with no other option at all. At least allow a little competition for that.

People talked all throughout the opening acts without regard for the performers. I could barely hear the musicians because a group of drunk middle-aged women were babbling on about completely superficial things.

The worst part came when a fat drunk guy with glasses, his wife, and their group of friends came and sat near me. They continually harassed me and my friend personally even though we had only asked them to quiet down a little and let us hear the main act. Then, someone spilled water on them and they thought that we had done it to them on purpose. They immediately began physically threatening us and screaming at us, calling us immature like their "8 year old son." If that's the example they're setting for the kids, it's no wonder that people say the next generation is hopeless.

The group went off and apparently security moved them somewhere. But the main offender of the group (the fat drunk guy with glasses) came back and actually assaulted us by holding us in place and dumping drinks on us.

Shaken, my friend and I went to security and the police, but security said they could do nothing unless we knew the guy's name. They offered to move us, but it was too late. The concert was completely ruined and we left an hour early because we felt so threatened. I am very bitter about the whole experience - especially since I missed my favorite artist performing my favorite song.

Had not been there for a while--it looks terrific.  They put nice wide well-maintained sidewalks and there is a walking trail that starts behind Galloway and goes all around the park, a couple of miles.  Lake with little mallards and sunning turtles  Very peaceful, good spot.

You can get glimpses of the therapeutic riding program in action from the road, good to see.

I love Chastain Park! Pretty scenery, clean, nice trails and a great concert venue. There's nothing better than a good run through the park early in the morning.

There are some drawbacks, but don't let them scare you off. These are more of an FYI...

    1. The kiddie baseball/flag football programs that meet in the afternoons. I don't know why, but during this time, people walk across the road without looking for oncoming traffic. I've had to slam on my brakes more times than I'd like, so keep your head on a swivel if the programs are happening when you're there.

    2. Parking for the concerts is terrible. Come early, and don't be afraid to walk. It's never been more than a quick ten minutes for me - you're not THAT lazy, are you?

    3. The moms walking three and four across the path with strollers who shoot YOU a dirty look when you try to pass them. You are not entitled because you're a parent - be a good neighbor and share the path, please!

The positives still outweigh the negatives - Chastain Park is wonderful!

How could I not have reviewed Chastain before??

It was the locale of choice for teenage outings with our beer and wine coolers. (Upper level, above the playgrounds, in case you're wondering - nice secluded gravel parking areas!)

It is the park I've walked and run around since coming back to Atlanta after college. That loop is one of my favorites!

It has an amazing horse park that the Junior League partners with, where children with special needs learn amazing lessons.

It has the tennis courts where my friend worked one summer and since I didn't have a job, I could pick up queso and tortillas at Taxco and visit her for lunch!

It has one of my favorite concert venues in town - Steve Winwood, Drivin' and Cryin' and Harry Connick Jr being three of my earliest memories there - then ABBA last summer! Can't wait to figure out what I will see this year . . .

As a local, this is a special place to me. Whether it's spying the kids playing baseball as I round the park on a workout, or just drive past the old clubhouse and see folks getting ready for golf, this is one snapshot of Atlanta for me that I love.

I saw Fiona Apple at Chastain during a storm while sitting on the lawn. Lightning sprawled like jellyfish through the purple sky. It perfectly matched her anger.

Not to mention swaying to Dolly Parton in the rain amongst old married couples smacking each other's butts in perfect harmony with writhing gay partners.

Santana even moved me with his spiritual between-song banter, a gigantic dove flapping on the huge projected screen.

Why the three stars, then? Upon my last visit to Chastain, I hoped my friends and I would be allowed into the Bob Dylan show about halfway through. We peeked through the fence's wooden slats during the first several songs, sad to see the amphitheater only half-full. Perhaps the steep ticket prices accounted for the lackluster attendance. The staff wouldn't let us in, even when people who left the concert just a couple songs in handed us their tickets. I finally scored an unscanned ticket from a generous old man, just in time to watch the encore misty-eyed.

I feel like Chastain doesn't care about the music, or passing a love for classic musicians such as Bob Dylan on to younger generations who can't afford $100 ticket prices. It's not about the music - it's, as always, about the profit.

This update concerns only the playground :

As expected for the neighborhood, this is one of the fanciest playgrounds in the area.  It's got lots of regular rubber swings (6 I think), 2 buckets swings, and very fancy wood/plastic/metal play ground.  The coolest feature of the play set itself The area is covered with mulch, but it's pretty small mulch, and it's well worn, so it soft and safe. The bucket swings are at a good height for parents to push, (maybe a little low, but then again I'm taller than many mothers), and they're off a little bit so that you've got a good view of the park while pushing your little one.  There are also lots of family park bench style swings and picnic tables.  There is no covered area at the playground itself, so it's hot and bright in the summer months, but there are some beautiful old trees.

As for parking, there are only a few spots close by, but the playground is directly off the walking path and close to W Wieuca.

Chastain is a GREAT place to go walking on a nice day. The golf course is a nicely groomed background for your trip. This is also a great place to just come sit and read a book on a swinging bench in the woods.

The area is kept up and always clean. This is a great place to bring kids (awesome playground) where you can take a break and let them wear themselves out.

If are an early walker, id feel pretty safe here. The boot campers are normally at it by 6 am and provide quite a bit of entertainment when your spirits could use some lifting (comon, nobody is thrilled the first 5 minutes of their 6 am workout)

The one thing I would say about this place is that there are areas where the sidewalks can get pretty thin on one side of the park. In these areas, if you need to pass somebody, your options are run into the wall or busy street on the other. It can make it hard to walk any decent size dog when people are constantly passing you.

I normally cant bring my shepherd because it becomes more of a hassle than an enjoyable walk or job.

Not too far at all from the hustle and bustle of Roswell Road sits good ol' chastain.  I love the benches along the trail, the stationary ones near the creek that runs through the park, and the swinging ones that make you feel like a kid along the trail that runs alongside Lake Forest Drive.

Speaking of kids, you're likely to see softball or little league football on the fields in the fall that you're able to watch on those benches, or you can keep walking along the trail.

We did just that, and along the way we passed lots of runners with friends, walkers with dogs, and moms with strollers, on over to the annual arts fair located  near the Arts Center off W Wieuca.

On a fall day it's a fantastic alternative to Piedmont park, a little less crowded, a little more intimate, even on a Saturday afternoon.  I haven't walked the entire park, but i'll be back.  Check this place out if you're in the area!

Just so happened the weekend I was visiting Jill Scott was performing and my friend who lives there scored two comps, so I probably would have liked Chastain Park regardless! But this really is a great venue.

As a frequent visitor to Ravinia Music Festival in Chicago's suburbs, I'm a big fan of open-air music ampitheaters. I love the idea of setting up your own little picnic and getting good and juicy and full before the show starts.

The sound system was better than I expected and whether you're sitting near the stage or in the back, folks seemed to enjoy their seats and sight views.

The only problem with the seating is the long rows with no breaks in them -- got a little sick of folks asking us to get up so they could hop down via our seats instead of having to go all the way to the end of the aisle.

The other problem is traffic and parking. HUGE crowd for Jill Scott, horrendous traffic, and yet zero traffic control except for the block(s) right next to the park. Ravinia and Highland Park police have spoiled me, and I'm accustomed to efficient traffic control, particularly for huge shows. It literally took us an hour to park. We missed Mint Condition and some of Anthony Hamilton's performance not because there was traffic but because of POOR, virtually inexistent traffic control around the park.

Other than that, it's a beautiful venue and I see why Atlantans flock to it. If they get the traffic and parking control together, it would truly be a 5-star facility!

Chastain Park is a wonderful piece of green space in Atlanta. I love how the park is used for a multitude of activities such running, walking, tennis, baseball, playground for the kiddies, relaxing in the green grass, hitting golf balls on the course or across the field (take caution when doing so), and even concerts. You name it and you can probably do it at Chastain.

The park feels like a very safe place as it is well lit at night and has a nice sidewalk that surrounds the park. It is abundant with wildlife, which is rare to find in Atlanta (outside of bars).

This treasure is nestled in a nice neighborhood of million dollar homes off Powers Ferry and open and free to the public (excluding events).

Love sitting out in a park and listening to music!!! Here are some tips to get the most out of your ampitheater experience:

    1. Take powers ferry road and come in the back way to avoid traffic. Don't pay $15 for parking in a lot, just drive downhill from the park entrance and park on the street for free.  Instead of walking uphill with your cooler, people drive around with carts and give rides to the entrance - they work for tips so bring singles if this is your plan!

    2. Don't buy your tickets in advance unless you think the show will sell out.Ticketmaster has a $10 service charge. If you pick up your tickets at Woodruff Arts Center it's only $6 but there's no charge if you get them at the venue.

    3. Bring a picnic! - Your picnic can include adult beverages. The web site says no glass so think boxed wine and canned 6 packs. Beer at the venue is $6 - $9.

    4. Bring binoculars if you're sitting in lawn seats.

    5. Don't bring chairs - they may make you leave them outside the venue.

Note: the sound isn't as good as it should be here. They have monitors on the sides of the stage but they weren't on last night for Diana Ross so it was hard to see.

Overall if you have a blanket, good friends, good food, some spirits and some bug spray, you should have an awesome time!!

The place is beautiful and could be a great venue. There are so many corporate tables that send people who don't care to these shows. People talk over the performers and have NO RESPECT for people who are sitting around them. The last time I was forced by my GF to go see Jewel at Chastain, she had to turn around and hush a girl who was trying to talk over Jewel. I can't explain how mad we were to hush someone. I don't believe my partner is over it yet! That's how mad you'll be!  I cancelled my membership there a long time ago and will not go back again.
The concert series at the Botanical Gardens is Chastain-like and you'll have a great time.

I love, love, love this music venue.  I love that it is a small amphitheatre tucked away in a residential area, there is ample parking whether in a paid lot or for free in the surrounding park, and that they have two concert formats - table set-up or reserved seating.

The table seating is the coolest experience allowing you to bring in food and beverage and dressing up your table however you like.

For me, Chastain is a must do every summer.  It's like reuniting with a long time friend - you are guaranteed to have a great time.  And, if the music doesn't entertain you, the people watching will!

I boycotted this place years ago.  If you are going to see a band you really, really need to make sure you spend enough money to sit very close to the stage.  The outdoor cocktail party combined with the noise ordinance from the nearby neighbors means that musicians are drowned out in a din of clinking glasses and chatting yuppies who are only there because they have season tickets and aren't really interested in hearing the artist on stage.  Sometimes it is a "rock and roll" setup where they ban people bringing in coolers, but the volume is still just missing the oomph you want to hear from a great rock and roll band.  Numerous artists have been put off by the inattentive audience.

Beyond the acoustic problems is the absolute nightmare of obtaining a beverage, bottle of water, or simply using the restroom.  Due the the small size of the venue, all of the amenities tend to be overwhelmed by the crowd.

I recommend staying away from this place unless the high priced tickets are free, or you are just going to enjoy the atmosphere.   You probably won't hear the music very well.

I enjoy just about everything about Chastain. The ampitheater in the summertime, the walking trail on those unseasonably mild days (or maybe ATL is just always mild?!), and just the greenness of it all.

The golf course is the most played course in Atlanta, and it shows. It's usually a lovely mottled shade of brown rather than the lush green one would expect, leading my brother and his friends to refer to it as "The Stain."

Luckily the rest of Chastain makes up for everything else, as the walking trail is impeccably maintained even on the busiest of days. Don't bring an unfriendly dog or fearful children here: it's dogtopia among these parts any hour of the day.

This is truly one of my favorite places in Atlanta,GA to work out and almost  do everything in one day!The 158-acre park is tucked into one of Buckhead's lushest residential areas. The reasonably priced 18-hole North Fulton Golf Course and one of the city's best jogging paths are the highlights. The paved path follows the park's perimeter, offering good views of the golf course and the latest joggers all out full of plenty of energy. A mix of hills and curves, along with several foot bridges and wooded spots, makes it the city's best short jog at roughly three miles.

What is so appealing also about Chastain Park is the nine tennis courts which fill up quickly. There's also a swimming pool, basketball court, baseball fields and several picnic areas. The Chastain Art Gallery, located on the park grounds, regularly puts on cutting-edge shows and is free. If you like to make your own art, check out the Chastain Arts Center's year-round programs.

I don't know about concerts, but don't come here to walk your dog(s).  We ended up at Chastain because Piedmont was crazy busy due to the AIDS walk.  Whose brilliant idea was it to have a park that loops around Powers Ferry Rd. with a very narrow sidewalk and cars zipping down the street?  And walking two rambunctious dogs was probably not the best idea either, especially when one of them narrowly escaped being hit by a speeding car.  Coupled with runners, strollers, other dogs going in both directions on a sidewalk meant for one person...and if you are clumsy like me, please don't trip on the Powers Ferry Rd. side.  Splat.

The nice thing about Chastain is that the other side of the trail is far far away from the road so chances are if your dog escapes or if you trip, you will still be okay.  I also like the length of the loop.  And I am thinking maybe I would like it better at a concert with a beer.

For dog walkers and runners, I would suggest Piedmont Park (much safer, bigger, and better) or Grant Park...something that is not dangerously close to the road that can make road kill out of my dogs and me.

What a civil place to see a show.  Went to the Allman Brothers on Saturday night and thank God for the Allman Brothers.  Chastain itself is as average as it gets for shows.

The acoustics are decent but not exceptional, much better than Hi-Fi Buys but nowhere near Verizon Amp.  The beer selection is as bad as it gets...and the layout is just brutal with narrow passageways, etc.

The positive is that it is smaller and you have a good seat pretty much anywhere.  Don't bother with lawn seats because the sound barely makes it there.  Not worth the savings.

I'm just thankful it was the Allman Brothers, and people were there to listen to a great band without being surrounded by candles and picnic baskets!

This has got to be my favorite place to watch a concert!  Sitting outside, packing a picnic meal, bottles of wine...*sigh*  I usually head out to watch a concert here at least once a year and you definitely get a great deal if you purchase a table with a group of friends.

I went to the Enrique "I can be your Hero" Iglesias concert this past Friday!  It was a lot of fun and he was really amazing!  I always feel that every seat at Chastain Park is a good seat.  Good acoustics, two large screens to watch the performer on stage, lots of room to stand/dance/store bags, and just the friendliest people around you.

If you did not bring food or are at a performance where you are not allowed to bring food in, they have a caterer where you can order your food online and pick it up there.  In addition, there is a Whole Foods and Starbucks available!

The only downside is the parking...either get there early or be prepared to walk and park at one of the many schools around Chastain Park.

Chastain is a unique place to see a concert. There is plenty written about what makes this place different. But the very thing that makes Chastain cool also makes it suck. They do a great job of creating a social environment in their venue. It is really something to experience. But once the lights go down, that social environment continues despite the performance on the stage. It can be very frustrating. Let's say your favorite artist comes to Atlanta and plays Chastain. You blow a bunch of cash to get good seats in or near the tables. Chances are good you're gonna have to deal with talking and chatty conversations among your neighbors.

The artists either love this or hate it. The last show I saw there was Prairie Home Companion a few years back. Garrison Keillor was visibly upset with the talking and interruptions during his show, and even was quoted about it in the AJC the next day. Yet other artists relish this environment and return year after year.

So just be aware of all this. It is still a unique concert experience that I've never experienced elsewhere. Go ahead and bring your candle, bottle of chardonnay, sushi, hummus and pita bread, etc, and have a hoity toity time!

This is a beautiful venue for seeing a concert.  I saw Erykah Badu here and the view was great.  The seating is set up so that even if the people in front of you get excited and stand up to dance, you can still see the stage!!  Nice.  It's an outdoor venue so bring bug spray in the spring and fall.  Although, as the opening artist was playing, I did see some bats flying overhead catching the insects.

Parking was OK for me.  I parked in the neighborhood adjacent to the venue and walked right in.  We also brought food and wine and had a great time enjoying them before the show started.  Definitely a welcome change from other indoor venues.

When I heard Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick were coming to town, I grew out my mullet and stache, strapped on my jean shorts and denim vest, and put on my headband.

Ah yes, the Summer Concert Series, which brings a lot of regular acts back to Chastain every year. These 3 are some of the said artists that make the trek back to Chastain each summer. The venue is pretty cool but can sometimes be hoity-toity. They arrange tables for certain seats and allow coolers to be brought in. The thing is, it's not just beer and wine in the coolers; It's full on 5-course meals, with silver candelabrum. I'm not exaggerating. Yup the 40+ white crowds at these events like to get down. No literally, get down on some rack of lamb with some vintage Chardonnay. And seriously, the candelabras are in full force.

Rich folks aside, this venue is pretty great. Located in an affluent neighborhood in what is more or less Buckhead, Chastain is a smaller outdoor amphitheater with a pretty decent sound system. Also seating is pretty roomy so you won't have to let the 400 lb redneck with a mullet and B.O. sit in your lap.

My one complaint is this: Line management. The bathroom situation is terrible. One is funneled through a single person wide path to get to the bathroom. This line also takes you by the beer/food stand for even more confusion and time spent in line. Employees of Chastain-please take down the banister to allow for better line flow. PLEASE!

That aside, I highly recommend checking out a show here of your favorite 70's or 80's artist.

Let me preface with this: I have never seen a concert here and I have only heard good things about the concerts - this is a review for the runners, joggers, and bikers out Yelping.

3 stars.  Not the worst place to run or bike through, but, far from the best.  Piedmont Park is a better destination.  The park has a nice (not scenic) atmosphere.  It is very clean and natural.  I get to smile at several pretty girls every time I run here.

Here are the things I don't like:

    - Running next to plastic fencing (to protect from golf balls).
    - Several strange road crossings.  I wound up running through several paths/parking lots - maybe I deviated off the path (multiple times).
    - The path has a couple blind turns up (or down) a hill before reaching a baseball field.  Some moron on a bike used this as an opportunity to collide into me while I was running.  Fortunately (for me), I am solid and don't allow bikers to bounce off me - I walked away unscathed.

I don't know if he took my advice to get riding lessons, put training wheels on his 'jackass' carbon fiber bike, or take his head out of...

I like Chastain because it is a smaller venue, it's outside, and it looks like it is in the middle of the woods.  With that said, I think the traffic getting to Chastain can be absurd, as can the parking (unless you have a parking pass, in which case the parking is a breeze).  I like the whole picnicking concept but I do not really like having to lug my cooler down all the steps.  But, it is nice to bring in my own food and drinks so I won't complain too much about that.  I also really like it when I get free tickets to go to Chastain!

I have to say, even though the tables are close to the stage, and you have a table to put all your stuff on, I don't really prefer sitting in the tables section.  They are the priciest, most premium seats, but it is super crowded in there, hard to get in and out, and hard to maneuver your way into a standing position so you can dance or applaud.  Some people sitting at other tables take up much more than their allotted chair space which really cramps the other tables.  I know I will sound like a concert snob when I write this but the only other seats I have sat in are Box seats, which were fantastic (I was just really lucky to always get these tickets).  Some concerts here seem to be very disjointed between the performer and the audience where the crowd is really not engaged or interested; however, I have seen this place looking like a big dance party when the right act was performing.

It seems like every time I go to a concert at Chastain, it rains at least a little.  Perhaps this is the real secret to solving Georgia's water problems.  Chastain is not fun in the rain - the acts still perform and the crowd just gets soaked.

Ah, Chastain. I was there last night for the first time in eons for the True Colors/ HRC tour. It has hands-down the best atmosphere of any venue in town. Good seating, lots of walking space between rows, & oh yeah, you can sit at tables & bring candles. And food. And coolers. And of course, it's outside.

Why just three stars? (1) I haven't been in so long because tickets are always expensive (2) Parking - and the traffic to get there - is horrendous (3) You have to wait in awful lines for concessions or bathrooms (and when you get to the bathroom, you have to pee in a trough. That's just gross.)

I can't believe I've lived in Atlanta for 20 years before I saw a concert here. If you haven't been, you are missing out. The intimate setting provides for a thoroughly entertaining evening. It's great to actually be able to see the performer vs these other venues where you actually see the performer better on a monitor than looking at the stage.

You can also bring food and drinks in as well. Personally, I think it's great to bring a bottle of wine, but I prefer to eat before getting there. The problem is, you have to park so far away it is a hike before you actually get to your seat, so you can imagine how not fun it is to be carrying a cooler with food for a mile before you can actually sit down.

Now, I've only ever seen 2 concerts here, but both were phenomenal. Mark Knopfler (singer for Dire Straits) and the Black Eyed peas. They have a vast group of performers, so everyone can find someone they would want to see here.

This place would have received 4 stars if the seating did not divide people into sections based on their financial wealth.  It felt like high school all over again, except people sitting at the cool table were there only because they were wealthy.

Chastain is a small cozy park located in between Buckhead and Sandy Springs.  Considering the area is in an upper-class part of town, I expected it to be really nice.  My expectations were accurate.

Their are a number of different attractions at Chastain Park.  Jogging and walking enthusiasts often take advantage of the sidewalks and wooded trails along the entire community.  The park also has a beautiful golf course.

The main attraction of Chastain Park though is the Amphitheater that hosts hundreds of concerts a year.  The amphitheater's unique qualities like its small size and tabled seating offer a special experience for any visitor.

The small venue allows the audience to have a more intimate experience with the artist performing at the amphitheater.

The tabled seating is a nice touch, except for the fact that they only put the tables on certain rows.  The individuals sitting in front of me might as well have turned around and given me an upper class slap in the face. They were dining and drinking wine on a candle lit table, while I was squeezed between the other individuals on my row drinking a bud light and munching on some crackers.  I know they probably paid a lot more for their seats, but I felt like the seating arrangements rubbed their luxury in my face.

The concert experience at this venue was good though, despite the yuppies in front of me.

Chastain is great.  If you are rich.  Which I am not.

The perks- if you are rich (like my pops) you will spring for the very close, but expensive parking, and the great seats, and all the food and drink you want.

When you go without pops, it isn't so great.  The food and drink are overpriced, and a seat up front will cost you, sometimes, in the hundreds.  And for parking- I would advise getting there early, or not wearing heels, or both.  Because you might have to do some serious walking.

But once you buy your expensive drinks and sit in row ZZ, you will be in for a treat- Chastain has this coliseum-type feel that ensures a good sound even if you can't see who is talking on the stage.

But they do have two giant screen TV's on each side, but the dudes who run them pick some weird things to focus on- I went to see Steely Dan recently, and I wanted to see Donald Fagan up close, and the dude working the camera for the TV's kept focusing on his hands playing the keyboard- what is that??  All I can say is that he better not be working when I go to see my beloved Morrissey!

The cool thing about this venue is that, for certain events, you can buy tickets for the up-front area where you can bring your own food and drink from home, and set up candles and other romantic stuff if you want to have a chilled out concert experience while enjoying your own (cheaper) food and drink.  But it will cost you a little more than the normal seats.

Chastain is pretty cool, nonetheless,  it's an outdoor venue where you can enjoy the summer air while listening to your favorite band.  But if the forecast is for rain, bring an umbrella.  But if you bring one of those giant stadium umbrellas you might get your butt kicked by some drunk fan who can't see the stage because of you, and keeps chanting "free bird" when Lynrd Skynrd isn't even playing.

As far as the music venue side of things, Chastain is truly unique. If you can snag a table (and it will definitely cost you) for a show, I highly recommend it. Being able to bring your own food, wine, mood lighting, etc. makes for a change of pace from the usual standing room shows at small clubs that I go to. Of course, the kind of act that plays Chastain isn't a scream and yell kind of deal anyway...

There are a few good caterers that sell boxed meals or special packages for tables at Chastain (Affairs to Remember and Proof of the Pudding are two of the bigger ones).

The only drawback to Chastain is the noise curfew that has been imposed on shows in the last couple of years. Concerts have to end by a certain time, no matter how long the act on stage feels like playing. A few years ago they pulled the plug on James Brown when he felt like going long and playing some encores. Horrible...
