Consistently solid food. Prices are very reasonable, portions are on point, and everything I've ever ordered (too many items to list) has been satisfying. I've never had anything off the menu which I felt I could have handled on my own at home - to me, that's deliciousness. To my recollection, Chelsea's is one of the few places Bar / Restaurant locations with a outdoor patio -- and an outdoor patio with a comforting view. When I'm here, I love to sit outside, drink a pint, and chat it up as long as my attention span desires. The draft beer selection is healthy and the bottle beer list more than decent. Â Oh yes, bathrooms have always been pristine. And who has ever said I hate clean bathrooms! No one, not never.
CONS - CLOSED ON SUNDAYS --- I feel like this is such a bad business choice being that I know many of BR folks long for a Sunday drinking spot-- a la New Orleans where Sunday drinking is the norm ------ ***also, there is serious lack of diversity re the server side of things - I've been frequenting Chelsea's regularly since it was located right off LSU campus (10 years ago) and I've only seen one person of color working there ( a black waitress) Â this entire decade-- I'm not such a fan of this...the times...they are..a changing....
I told my girlfriend I was craving a grilled cheese one day, and then I ended up in cheesy heaven the next day. I have never had such an amazing grilled cheese sandwich. The cheese was perfectly melted and the bread was toasted to perfection. I am drooling about it by just writing about it. The place is a little bit divey but I like the atmosphere and all of the servers seem to know what they are doing. I will definitely be back there soon, hopefully to catch a live band!!
Review Source:Whenever I'm in Baton Rouge, I'm at Chelsea's. They've got it all: a great crowd, killer food, live entertainment, and local charm. There are other intangibles in the mix as well, such as outdoor seating, charming bartenders, and one of the more unique spaces in the city. There simply aren't many places like it.
As a restaurant, Chelsea's hits on all cylinders. There is a rustic quality to the establishment during the day and it is quite the festive place at night. Some would argue that the food here is their best asset and they might be right. The local seafood and Cajun options are some of the best in the city; highlights include the calimari parmesan po'boy, burgers, and various pasta options. They have a pretty robust vegetarian menu on hand as well, which is a plus for our plant based food loving friends.
When the sun sets, Chelsea's morphs itself into a bustling bar. During the weekends, crowds of BR folks are here for everything from late night drinking to small concerts. Whenever the place becomes excessively crowded, it is no longer fun. Ventilation gets a bit stuffy, and the concerts are typically standing room only. At least the drinks are good and the bartenders are a sweet bunch if you order often and with a smile.
As one of the city's most revered local spots, I'm happy to come out to Chelsea's for a stellar meal and a great time.
4/5 tilapia special was about it bout it.
so i'm late to the fun train, since i'm not always in BR, but my coworker took me here on a thursday for lunch and the special was just calling my name. it was a huge, substantial filet that was coated and fried, served under a warm sundried tomate and olive tapenade, WITH a side of sauteed mushrooms and greens WITH a side of couscous. i was way too full and wobbled out, but it was so good. i've heard all the raves about the tomato soup and grilled cheese combo, and will definitely be stopping back in for lunch in the future!
While in Baton Rouge, we wanted to find a local spot away from the chains. Yelp reviews sent us here. Like others said, it was hard to get to but worth it. Outdoor seating, spacious dining room, lots of space in the bar area. That's where we sat. It was around 3pm so the atmosphere was quiet and laid back but the place looks like it could be the happening spot during peak hours. Loved the unfinished wood floors. Bathrooms are clean. Our waitress was super nice. Seems like all the staff is happy to work there.
Now the food... I had the grilled cheese sandwich and basil soup. Very yummy. Had my favorite beer... Abita Amber. They serve it it a large, cold glass. I had a hard time finishing it.
So glad we found this place. The whole area seems relaxed. It's under the overpass but away from the chains. Near LSU. Found us a new spot while in Baton Rouge :)
I had wonderful fried shrimp here- but the place looks and feels dirty. A good cleaning and I will be there with bells on.
It would be nice to have some other option than french fries. I allow myself fried shrimp but I don't like a mountain of fries to go with.
I like that it is a casual place and the service was good.
I saw an ad for Chelsea's Cafe in Dig Magazine and the picture looked so amazing I decided to try it.  I got the grilled cheese and tomato basil soup and it was as amazing as the picture looked.  The focaccia bread  is soft and buttery and the blend of cheeses is simply fantastic.  As the Dig article pointed out the soup has a hint of spice that you wouldn't expect but when you dunk your sandwich into the soup it makes for the perfect combo.  I will definitely be back again!
Review Source:Best casual restaurant in Baton Rouge. Every item on the menu is unique, and a lot of them you can't get anywhere else. I have several "go-to" items but my favorite is the veggies over focaccia bread with cheese and tomato basil sauce. They make their own bread (what restaurant does that!?) and it really takes their dishes to another level.
Tip: they're famous for their grilled cheese but if you get the tomato soup mixed half with the creamy artichoke, it creates an orangey creamy soup. Mmmmmm
This is the best restaurant in Baton Rouge, hands down. Their menu isn't all that long, but every option on it that my friends and I have tried has been fantastic. Some of the highlights include, the grilled cheese and tomato soup; the shrimp, Parmesan and calamari po boy with marinara sauce; the rib-eye -- all amazing. The service is very pleasant and speedy, and there beer selection is prime  as well. They truly can adapt to any party size with their giant dining room, as well.
The outdoor areas (both front and back) are pleasant as well. Such a dependably delicious option for Baton Rouge!
This place was an awesome find. It has a great atmosphere. Very laid back. My friend and I are from out of town and driving through, found this place on here and it was a great experience. Our service was a little slow but they were very nice. Great beer selections and awesome food. Hummus was incredible! I had the pesto ravioli and it was amazing. My friend had the grilled cheese and that was great too. Definitely recommend this place!
Review Source:Chelsea's is a great bar/restaurant located in the eclectic neighborhood surrounding the Perkins Overpass in Baton Rouge.
During the day it's a great place to go for lunch. At night it's got more of a bar feel with live music and a large (and often crowded) bar area.
It's a casual feel, with down-home food in a bohemian atmosphere.
Prices for entree's range from about $10-$16.
I am a vegetarian and they have many vegetarian options on their menu.
The service has always been great as well.
Live music, better than average food, crappy parking, no margaritas. That about sums up Chelsea's for me. I got the calamari and parmesan poboy. There was nothing special or imaginative about it. The restaurant's website said it came with tomato and basil on the side; turns out it's a tomato basil dip. The order came with a measly quantity of fries, which thankfully weren't over-salted or over-spiced. I also got a decent cosmo with my order. My friends ordered a variety of things including a couscous dish and the crawfish risotto. The coscous looked good, but my friend said it had too many tomatoes! The indoors was reasonably crowded when we were preparing to leave--around 9. The outdoors on the other hand could do with some TLC to make it more diner-friendly. Mosquito repellents and more comfy chairs would be a good start.
Review Source:Love this place! Â I ordered the chicken fried steak, and fell in love with it at first bite. Â I stopped in while visiting the LSU campus and found this place through yelp. Â Everyone in party loved what they ate and beer selection was excellent. Â Place looks like a fun live music place, but I was there for a late lunch and too early to see what it was like after dark.
Review Source:Interesting location. Food better than expected. Artichoke mushroom soup is different in good way .... sour and hearty like Swedish meatballs without the meatballs. I loved it! Asian sesame salad dressing a bit too strong for me but my father in law loved it. Stuffed mushrooms were delicious. Best thing we had. It had a Vietnamese sweet chili dip that my hubby and father in law loved.... the dip too sweet for my taste. The same dip came with the crawfish cakes which were just ok. Crawfish risotto was a bit surprising. Tomato sauce base did seem to match (first bite was like eating sphaghettios) but later bites got better.  I think it would have been better with a creamier base. Remaining food that we ordered was the typical Louisiana bar and grill food. Nothing spectacular. Grilled cheese was delicious with hearty wheat bread and tons  of cheddar cheese. Great!
We may try next time when a band plays.
The fried green tomatoes are the most amazing things I've ever eaten!!!! This place is great. It has typical Southern Louisiana foods. The grilled cheese on foccacia bread paired with the tomato basil soup is another favorite. It's a restaurant by day, bar by night with live music, tvs for sports, outdoor patio, etc. Very close to LSU's campus.
Review Source:Yelp Success..!! Loved this place..! It has become my favorite place when I am craving non Indian Veggie food.. think grilled veggies, couscous, tomato soup.. omg!!
The Tomato soup they have is the BEST thing ever! Loved every sip of it.. it is warm, filling, hearty, peppery and yummy, all at the same time!
The Veggie couscous come with a bunch of grilled veggies (which I love), on a bed of yummy cooked-to-perfection couscous, and a yummy marinara kind of sauce which gives the whole dish a yum yum tang!
A friend had the craw fish risotto and that is great too!
Love the whole vibe of the place - very Louisiana laid back, jazzy, hole in the wall-ey kinda feeling. I guess that is because this place is tucked away right under the overpass, and I never know how to get right to it while driving.. lol.. I always park in the lot near it and then walk to it.. The place is pretty big on the inside.. and you will see ALL kinds of people sitting and chilling.. from the Oldies who sit at the bar, reading a newspaper and sipping Jack n coke at 1 in the afternoon, the road junkies with long disheveled hair.. to the properly attired consultants .. they will all mingle here for good food, and good service.. LOVE the place! :)
A good solid 3 stars. Nothing to write home about. The crawfish cakes were pretty good and the dipping sauce was tasty, too. Â I had the ravioli. Not that I'd expect freshly-made pasta at a place like that, but it didn't taste (nor have the texture) of something delicious.Very bland and very blah.
Service was pretty good. Not bad, by any means, just not wonderful.
Sitting outside (in the front) was very nice and charming.
It was a nice stop on the way to New Orleans, but kinda wish we would have tried one of the other restaurants within a stone's throw of the place.
The beer list here is pretty damn good. Â I think I consumed my weight in Oyster Stout and Young's Double Chocolate Stout while visiting here. Â The food is pretty damn good. Â The stage setup is pretty damn good, as is the ownership of Chelsea's. Â
I look forward to visiting Baton Rouge again, and hopefully making another stop at Chelsea's.
Great place for lunch or a casual dinner with drinks or watching a band with drinks. Obviously, if you are dining you have to get the Grilled Cheese (with my creative addition of pesto) and the tomato basil soup. There's nothing I can say about this that hasn't already been said 3000 times so just trust me and order it, even if its 100 degrees outside. The Pesto Bread is ethereal, as is the Chicken Mojo (salad or sandwich, it matters not). Oh AND they have the best burger in Baton Rouge.
If you come to Baton Rouge, this place has to be on your list of restaurants/bars to visit because its under an overpass and its one of the most unique places we have in our little chain restaurant oasis.
The ladies hosting me in Baton Rouge highly recommended this place, so I was excited to have lunch here with them. The back patio was just about the perfect setting for a sunny Saturday afternoon. (I'm coming from overcast Pittsburgh, so that's why I've brought up sun in quite a few of my Baton Rouge reviews--love it).
I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with the tomato basil soup, which my hostesses had raved about, and wasn't disappointed. I'm a little wary of tomato soups in general. Sometimes they're too sweet for my tastes. But Chelsea's version has spicy kick to it, which makes it a winner in my book. It was the perfect complement to the grilled cheese, which used 6 different cheeses. Yum. I might have preferred a less pillowy, more crisp bread for the sandwich, but I still ate every bite.
Who knew that an eatery located under an overpass could be so good and have a laid-back ambiance? I could have sat on that patio for hours, if we hadn't had other missions to tackle.
Who went to Chelsea's on Highland before it got grown up and moved under the overpass? You?! Me too.
Well, they still have a great night life and excellent food. Â My best friend and I try and come here as often as we are in town, especially to eat the chicken fried chicken, green beans and smashed potatoes. Â My best friend has titled this her "last meal", it is that good. Â And it is, and I'll tell you why. Â Perfectly fried chicken breast covered in chicken gravy served with fresh and precisely cooked (still green with a slight resistance) green beans sauteed in lemon garlic butter and served with smashed potatoes. Â Does not get better than this.
You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you I've had every item on Chelsea's menu....but I have. And I will continue to visit one of my favorite restaurants/bars in Baton Rouge as long as they'll continue serving me!
Appetizers...my favorites: Hummus served with perfect pita bread, feta and fresh cut Roma tomatoes. Spinach & Artichoke dip NEVER fails. Calamari served with the crowd favorite tomato basil soup.
Main Dishes: Three words...Chicken Bacon Swiss (go all out and get cheese fries..!). You can never go wrong with the Grilled Cheese on Focaccia, or try the Grilled Veggies on Focaccia...it's served open faced topped with melted cheese and on top of the tomato basil soup. Chicken Fried Chicken - perfectly fried chicken breast with sauteed garlic lemon green beans and mashed potatoes. Anything that has to do with their Chicken Mojo. And last, but not least, Artichoke Pasta Salad.
Great ambiance, local art on display, always good music playing, consistently good food and your drink will always be filled. Great place for lunch or dinner. VERY reasonably priced and they feature a mid afternoon happy hour. They even have a late night menu they offer during shows. It's always a place we bring out of town friends...for the food, music and patio. You CAN'T go wrong with Chelsea's.
My new roommate took me here for our first meal out together since the place is right in our neighborhood and she said the food and atmosphere was really good and laidback. We went for dinner and sat outside on the back patio. Service was good, they have a variety of different types of foods on their menu that cater to the healthy or not-so-healthy eater. veggie and non-veggie friendly. The prices were start around $7, so if you're on a budget, there's something here for you too. I had the grilled cheese on ciabatta with tomato basil soup. The soup was a little spicy. I thought it was a great dish - simple but tasty. My roommate had the artichoke ravioli, which I tried, and I thought it was great, but they put a little too much sauce on it.
I can't wait to go back and try something else! I love places where there are so many options that look appetizing.
I'd always been to Chelseas to catch shows (namely Ted Leo). Ted Leo loves playing this place because they're super super friendly, and they take good care of him. He claims that the vegetarian (vegan?) food is really awesome and on point, but I wouldn't know since I decided to indulge in Chicken Fried Steak.
WOW. Just WOW. Completely utterly 110% amazing. The green beans were cooked so well, the mashers amazing, but goodness the chicken was fried so perfectly. The gravy was just lagniappe, but oh the best kind of lagniappe. Unbelievably good, and completely worth the $8.95.
My friends all enjoyed their dishes too. But it's nice to know that this place has super solid food, as well as is an amazing place to catch a band. Oh yeah, as for service, it was kind of really slow, but all things considered, there was also a LSU College Baseball game on, and there were tons and tons of fans. That made getting seated and getting food longer than we'd have liked, but I'm sure this place is just fine on a normal day, so just beware of LSU gamedays.
How can anyone not love this place? It's too good.
Every time I come back home to the Big BR, I try to eat at least one meal at Chelsea's. I love the laid back atmosphere and of course the Chicken Mojo sandwich. The live music is also great!
Although I love Chelsea's, I'm docking it one star because the of the wait time at the bar and because it is not open on Sundays. I know I know, keep the Sabbath holy, but when I'm in town just for the weekend and can't get my Chelsea's fix, I'm a little disappointed!
Over all, Chelsea's is one of those places that you have to go in Baton Rouge -- whether it's to grab a bite to eat or to catch a show, it has become a staple in the Red Stick.
Whoever gave/gives Chelseas less than 4 needs to get out of Baton Rouge right now and never come back.
Their food is creative, delicious, and SOOOOOOO perfectly priced! Great laid back atmosphere, SUPER FRIENDLY STAFF, and I love love love that the owner himself isnt too big time to serve you himself. What a champ. Plus, great live music and cool folks who come in. It's a diamond in the rough. Â It's not some fancy pants place with fancy perfect food - its just a comfortable place to go to have good eats and a glass of beer with friends. Â
I suggest the fried green FREAKING AMAZING tomatos.
I come to Chelsea's every time I'm visiting, and it's one of the highlights of my trip. I usually go for lunch, not the night time thing.
Baton Rouge, you should be so happy that you have such a wonderful , non-snobby, easy going, tasty food sort of place....you need it like you need all the people who leave after college to come back...you dont want to run this one off, too.
A friend took me here and I was pleasantly surprised due to the location being kind of odd, but whatever. It's Baton Rouge.
Crawfish cakes. Awesome salad. I like the atmosphere (I hate light, hahaha). The musicians were chatting with us while they were setting up. It's intimate but open. Very easy to chat with people here. Good to watch a game in the back. Staff is friendly.
Food is excellent. Nothing is lacking, really.
Definitely okay for a first date if you're not uptight people and you like to have fun, otherwise...go to Mike Anderson's or something.
Located under the Perkins Rd. overpass, this isn't an ideal spot to take a girl on a first date, if she's never been there. She'll think you're taking her under an overpass.
When you walk into Chelsea's, there's a giant chalkboard neatly written upon in bright colors, and with the old, hardwood floors and cool, clever, musically-themed paintings on the walls, the whole place exudes the sort of vibe you would look for, culturally, from this part of the US.
Chelsea's offers live music (see website for event calendar) and  a menu which includes such items as Crawfish Cakes ($6.95), Chicken Florentine ($9.95), and, of course, a Fried Catfish PoBoy, dressed and served with fries, for just $7.95.
Yes, I will definitely probably be back. ,': D I just made myself hungry, looking over their menu.
Chelsea's is the quintessential college resturant/bar. They're very eclectic with exposed brick walls as well as fun paintings and art. The new location also did a great job with the double bar areas and the increased area for shows and readings. The outside area is nice to sit in if the weather is good but not so much if it is rainy because there's no roof!
Chelsea's, for the most part, has fabulous food. The sandwiches, pastas and everything else is wonderful. Their salads are HUGE! I'm also impressed with their range of vegan offerings (even though I'm not even a vegetarian) which are just as tasty as their meaty counterparts.
My only real complaint is the waitstaff, which can be a little flakey at times. But I've never had a bad experience there and its a great place to hang out and eat.
