I've been here twice for their lunch buffet. Â My experience was better the first time; but that's because I liked their buffet selection better that time. Â They had this warm carrot/coconut/curry mash that was out of this world along with the other traditional Indian dishes. Â The second time the chicken in the Butter Chicken had some tough/rubbery bites. Â Otherwise, everything was fresh, tasty and satisfying.
Review Source:I would give this place zero stars if I could. This is the WORST Indian food I've ever eaten and I'm INDIAN!
We ordered food to be delivered from Curry House tonight and we were beyond disappointed.
We got the Palak paneer which was tasteless and the paneer was old and rubbery.
We also got the hara bara chicken kebab which was dry and tough to eat and not to mention heavily lacking any sort of spices.
The dish came with rice and we ordered 2 Lacha parathas on the side. The parathas were huge and dry. Parathas are supposed to be nice and flakey but whatever they sent us did not even closely resemble a paratha.
Lastly we ordered the gulab Jamuns for dessert. These were the worst gulab jamuns ever! They were dry and crunchie and nowhere near nice and soft like they are supposed to be.
I'm so upset that this places poses as an Indian restaurant !!
Save your $$$$ and go to Devon Street if possible. There are plenty of authentic Indian restaurants in Chicago and this isn't one of them.
I have eaten here a couple times now and its nice to have decent Indian place on the South Side. Â They have a huge menu of all the usual favorites plus some Nepalese dishes too. Â The basic curries are great, Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, biryani, etc. all delicious. Â Now here's something awesome. The rice is INCLUDED. Its such a pet peeve of mine in Indian restaurants when they charge extra for rice. Â Everything I have had here so far has been great. They also have a lunch buffet, which is pretty much the best thing to ever happen to Indian food in America.
The service was excellent. Our waiter took great care of us and was very helpful regarding recommendations on spiciness. Though, I think he underestimated us. I suppose we could have gone hotter, though not by much. Our waters never went empty, thankfully.
Just thinking about their Naan bread makes my mouth water; that stuff is amazing!
I've been here several times for take out and it's always been ridiculously fast and the food perfectly cooked. Â If it's your first time, definitely go for the Chicken Tikka Masala or Chicken Makhani. Â They're both overwhelmingly good, but the Chicken Makhani has succulent pieces of dark meat rather than white meat with a sauce that is absolutely to die for.
The Mango Lassi pairs great with anything to ease the spiciness of the dishes. Â The Vegetable Samosas are enormous and deep fried to perfection.
Try it! Whenever I have an aching for Indian food in the South Loop, this is the best place to stop by.
Went here on a dinner date with my GF. Â If it were a lunch date I probably would have given more stars. Â But our dinner plates were high-priced, thinly disguised buffet items.
For paying entree prices, the food quality was not great. Â The Palak Paneer tasted like the spinach came out of a can. Â It was very salty. Â The samosas were crispy on the outside but tasted bland. Â But I have to give it to them - the Chicken Vindaloo was very spicy and still had good flavor. Â But not worth coming back for.
If you want good Indian food for dinner, try Cumin up on Milwaukee. Â You'll get your money's worth on the entrees. Â Glad I tried it but won't be going back to this place.
I always have to remind myself when thinking of how much I liked a restaurant: was I really hungry? Had I not had this type of food in a while? Was it cold/hot/raining/extreme whatever outside? I could answer yes to any of these...but Chicago Curry House is a good option for South Loop Indian food.
First time: Chili Chicken extra spicy. Delicious, and full of sliced jalapenos. My eyes watered. My nose ran. My ears steamed. But this was not just spicy - it was really, really good. Not watered-down, whited-out, Lakeview spicy, but flavorful, yummy spicy.
Other orders: butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo, lamb curry, goat stuff, garlic naan, all naan, non-naan, both of soups on offer.
Sheer convenience (across the street from my condo) may make this food slightly better to me than it is. I used to live off of Devon and had my favorites, but CCH is a good secondary option.
This place is kind of hidden, but the smells are soo yummy!
I may be biased because my mom makes SERIOUSLY good indian food...but this restaurant seems to pale in comparison to the better restaurants available on Devon St.
I got the okra curry, and felt like it was something I could throw together in a short amount of time. It was literally just average. I think I just ate it cause I was hungry.
Check in on yelp and you can get a discount!
It'll work if you've got a serious need for some Indian buffet. Â Cheap and a decent variety of items.
It's been a while since I was there so the only thing that stood out for me was the goat. Pretty much since then, I've been craving goat.
....not something I'd ever think to say.....
Do the yelp check-in! Save 15% on the already cheap buffet.
I find it frustrating when a place of business posts hours of operation and then turns out to be closed. Â
For some small family type places where the food is outstanding, I'll put up with it. Â In this case, I may never find out how worthy the food is because I don't find anything very inspiring in the yelp reviews and I was unable to put in my to-go order to try it myself. Â The doors were locked at 9:40pm on a Thursday night.
So if you are determined to try and eat here, I would suggest calling ahead to check on the real hours.
I got the gosh (lamb) biryani here and really liked it. Â I probably should have gotten mild vs medium, but I still thought the quality was great and the portions of everything were really big. Â The biryani was slightly different (in my opinion better) than the typical north Indian style and I'm guessing its the Nepalese influence.
Its also open at dinner time whereas a lot of other restaurants in the area aren't. Â I'd definitely come back.
Went for dinner with my girls...
Butter chicken was the star of the night!!!!!
Chicken tikka masala was so off....i've had better at SO many other Indian restaurants...
The vegetable pakora was okay...again i've had better at other places....
The vegetable yellow curry was okay...nothing special
Tandori chicken was so so...the seasoning wasn't really as "red" as other places...the dark meat was good...the white meat was so dry......
I would definitely suggest going elsewhere if you like authentic indian food....perhaps india house...
Naan was just like everywhere else....large portion of naan...nice and fluffy & buttery
If you do go....get the butter chicken & butter naan...i would actually go back just to get that
Decor is nice & service is excellent
Granted I went in already knowing I would dislike Indian food. Â I just do not like the spice profile of Indian food, but I was ready to give it a second chance. and yes, I've had what is considered some of the best indian food while I lived in London.
We did the buffet option so we could try everything. Â The items that stood out were the butter chicken and garlic naan. Â
All the other buffett items were just too overspiced with clove. Â ruined it for me. Â
We might give them another try and just order off the a la carte menu and hopefully there are less clove-y selections.
The butter chicken is so good!!!! And the bread compliments it very well. I love the mango lassi!!!! Â Chicken makhani is the bombizzzeeelllll :) Â the goat is a definite must to try. Next time I'm in the area ill definitely hit this place up.
Mr. Bohj was very polite and made the experience very enjoyable great service!!
After lunch last Sunday, my friend and I left feeling super stuffed from all the goodies at this restaurant's buffet for only $11 + tax and tip.
Most memorable items:
*My personal combination / sandwich of roasted tandoori chicken; fresh sliced cucumber, tomato and onion; cool yogurt sauce paired with spicy kick of the green cilantro/mint chutney sauce within a thin crusty naan bread pocket. (I picked up a habit of my husband to make a wrap or sandwich out of varied items when applicable.)
*The goat - It's an unusual meat item at any rate so I had to try it. The saucy chunks of meat on the bone had the most flavor of all the entree choices.
*The Chicken Makhani - Comforting, buttery sauce enveloped tender pieces of chicken
Did not go back for seconds of these:
*Crunchy chicken noodles - It seemed out of place from the description in an Indian restaurant and because it felt reminiscent of an oddball Chinese dish.
*Mixed vegetable soup - Had a good kick but few veggies / lentils within the broth
*Mix Pakora - assorted fried veggies became less crunchy and more soggy over time, which I'm not too upset about because it's a natural result of buffet style serving
P.S. I later discovered the Yelp Check-In offer of 15 percent off, so make sure to utilize that to add on to an already affordable price for an Indian buffet!
The only Nepalese restaurant near Loop!
Weekday lunch buffet is $10.99. Â Daily selections are same or similar plus/minus a dish or two. Â Buttery original naan is served. Â Limited selection compared to River North competitor.
Space near kitchen (location of buffet) can be cluttered. Â Scene behind the bar area can be a deterrent. Â
Enticing ethnic wine brand selection.
$11.95 lunch buffet. They have a good variety of items, including yummy samosas, and my only wish is to see an okra dish (when I worked in Oak Park, I would eat at Kyber Pass and sometimes they had this delicious okra dish there).
Anyway, they make your naan fresh for your table and it's some of the best naan I've ever had. This is a decent walk from the south part of the loop, you can work off some of your huge lunch.
I came here for the lunch buffet today and although the food seemed to be pretty standard fare, for some reason it just didn't taste as good as it did before. The tandoori chicken was dry, there were only two meat dishes and the meat in both were tough and more like scraps. The sauces were okay but too thin, flavorful though. All in all, I wasn't very excited to spend $15 on lunch that just wasn't that satisfying when I had been craving Indian buffet for days.
Service though as always was good. And the naan was also fluffy and chewy, perfect consistency.
Amazing food, interesting twists on typical indian food, generous portions. The staff was friendly, and the food took an appropriate amount of time for the quality.
The kofta was ok, but the other dishes we got were delicious. The kasmiri naan was pretty interesting and matches well with some of the spicier dishes. The kulfi was also really good.
We left with a large amount of food and had a great lunch the next day. We will come here again.
I don't know what to think about this place. They had buffet style for lunch for about 11 dollars per person, which we decided to try out.
Although I am a girl, I'm going to admit that I'm pretty much a carnivore at heart. I love Chicken, and I love meat in general. Roar. Most of the stuff on the buffet menu were pretty vegetarian, so if you're a vegetarian, you should really like it here.
I really liked their tandoori chicken, although it was hard to eat because its thigh meat still attached to the bone. Their saffron rice is good too, but a little dry. I also thought that their samosas were pretty dry too. They also have goat meat for you to try, but their Chicken Curry was absolutely delicious. Their naan was also unlimited, which made everything 10 billion times better.
Oh, and seriously, I can eat their Kheer all day long.
All. freaking. day.
It's so goooood.
The 15% discount off the total bill also really helped! Thanks Chicago Curry House & yelp check-in offers!
I love Indian food. My guy.... not so much. Â Usually my suggestions of an Indian delivery are met with a meek smile and a slight shaking of his head saying no.
But tonight was going to be different! I had convinced him that he should give Indian food a chance. Tonight, I was going to turn him into a believer!!
I found that the Chicago Curry House would deliver straight to my door.
I placed an order through grubhub for dinner here that night.
I placed my order and was quoted the standard delivery time of an hour. Twenty minutes later I was notified that my delivery time would be 15 minutes later than originally quoted. Alright, thats cool. I understand delivery service can get hectic sometimes.
Flash forward to an HOUR past the delivery time. I had called the restaurant to inquire about where my food was and whether I would receive a discount because of the super late food. The person on the phone had asked what my order was. When he discovered that I had used grubhub, he flipantly said that "Because I already paid, I should call grubhub and complain to them"
Wha?
I told him that, I HADN'T already paid and was paying in cash his tone changed remarkably. He said he'd give me five dollars off. WTF? I'll take the 5 dollar discount, but he only gave it to me because I hadn't prepaid. If I had I'd be shit out of luck.
Finally close to two hours after the quoted delivery time, the delivery guy shows up. Hacking throughout the entire transaction. I told him that his restaurant had given me five dollars off and gave him the discounted rate sans tip. Yeah,I know. I hate not giving tips. I have worked in the service industry for close to a decade and i tip well, but when you show up TWO HOURS late and possibly could give me TB, frankly you don't deserve a tip.
After I closed the door and started to unpack the food, I hear a knock on the door.
My boyfriend goes to answer the returned disgruntled delivery driver. The driver started to harassing my boyfriend about the absence of tip and the discount we included. But when he saw that it wasn't me who answered the door but my super manly boyfriend he backed off.
I can't help but wonder what would have happened if it were just me ordering food and handling a scary stranger at my door.
SERIOUSLY?!
Worst service ever.
mediocre Indian food that was cold did not convert my boyfriend into a believer.
Delivery orderer's beware.
This review is for their takeout only bc I have yet to dine in.
My friend had told me abt chi curry house and since it's just a few blocks away, I thought it was time to try it (that and who wants to drive all the way north to devon??)
We got the chicken pakoras, chicken makhani (butter chicken), and garlic naan. Â Everything was packaged SO nicely, which is quite a change from other indian restaurants! Â They even packed up some chutneys which were awesome.. and also some "paaper" as an appetizer, which is this crispy type thing- fine i actually dont know what it is but growing up, we always used to have it with meals. Â Chicken makhani was perfect and ever so rich.. I would have preferred it to be spicy tho.. i'll have to tell them next time. Â Garlic naan was uhhhhhhhh-mazing. The chicken pakoras were a nice concept as well.
My husband who went to get the food said that the people who work there are really sweet and the lady at the front was super friendly. Â Again, quite a change from other really rude men manning the front of other indian restaurants!! She let us keep our coupon for next time too :)
Can't wait to try some Nepalese dishes next time! Yaaay for a good indian restaurant in the south loop!
I've eaten at this place several times, mostly for dinner...but when my fiance had a taste for Indian on a Saturday afternoon, I thought...hey, why not? Their Nepalese dishes are yummy and their curries never disappoint.
However, an unexpected lunch buffet greeted us on this chilly Saturday. I typically would only expect these during the week, when work crowds in the neighborhood are probably looking for a good deal and a warm belly. I'll compare this to other Indian food lunch buffets I've had. Hands down, this one is phenomenal. More choices than your typical lunch buffet. Fresh...like I feel like we were the first one dipping our spoons into these hearty dishes. Steaming hot curries with chicken, goat, beef...there was something for everyone. And for someone new to Indian food...I ensure you...you'll find at least ONE thing you'll want to try again. From mild to spicy, there's something for everyone.
I just want to note also...that at a typical lunch buffet you don't really expect a server to be attentive to your needs...after all, they don't have much to do. This place was an exception. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive, and really seemed to care if we liked our food or not.
Two full bellies for under $30? I'll take it!
I am really only giving this place 2 stars because they attempted to fix the issue we had with our dinner.
(Insert Law and Order Dramatic Sound)
Part 1 - We arrived late, around 8 pm for a last minute dinner. Â We were ushered into our seats and munched on the complimentary crackers and sauces when BAM a hair was found in my boyfriends mouth. We didn't say anything just stopped eating the assorted sauces. Â
(Insert Law and Order Dramatic Sound)
Part 2 - We order the Chef's Assorted App's. An assortment of strange looking fried foods. Â A yogurt dip of some sort would of complimented the under-cooked chicken we had perfectly. Â Nothing was offered or recommended. Â I mean you serve a bunch of fried foods with no sauces? Â Noticeably under-cooked at that. Â They took the platter back into the kitchen to recook the chicken, and returned with hot chicken, and everything else ICE cold. Â At this point we were ready to just say forget it and leave. Â The staff and manager did not understand at first why we were returning the dish, which is even more frustrating. Â It took them about 10 minutes to figure out that our dish was cold, after they had to reheat the chicken. Â The whole ordeal was aggravating. Â So they took back the whole appetizer.
(Insert Law and Order Dramatic Sound)
Part 3 - Our Chicken Tikka was delivered, on the cold side. Â There were burners underneath it, but yet it still was cold. Â They brought out some lentils for us about 5 minutes after our meal was delivered - in an attempt to make up for the appetizer disaster. Â The lentils were okay. Â The sauce for the Tikka was okay. Â The naan was probably the best part of our whole meal. Â
After we finished our meal, we sat there for NO LIE 20 minutes after asking for our check twice. Â They were trying to figure out our bill. Â It took everyone in the restaurant, even the cook from the back to adjust the bill properly. Â
In the end, we were only charged for the Chicken Tikka and naan - which still ended up being $17. Â Honestly, Trader Joe's microwave Indian dinners are much better. Â If you are going to pay $17 for one dish, I recommend you go to a fancy Indian place. Â I will not be returning, thank god Standard Indian and Taj Mahal are around for the time being.
There's a reason I'm the Foursquare Mayor AND The Yelp Duchess of this fine establishment: It's that damn good!
Time has only deepened my affection for Chicago Curry House. The buffet is still one of the best, most delicious bargains around. I'm still in love with the lamb curry, the butter chicken and the yellow lentils. I've branched out and tried some of the Nepalese dishes as well and have never had a bad meal.
I've brought several different groups of friends and from out-of-towners to neighbors who'd never tried it before, they all loved it.
The food is, of course, outstanding but the service is also impeccable. I was here recently and witnessed an unreasonably irate customer (not a regular) browbeating the owner for forgetting to add her social media discount into the total. Now, mind you, they don't have to offer that at all, but to yell at the man like he killed somebody was just out of order. The owner didn't flinch, didn't patronize her, didn't yell back, didn't kick her out (which I would have done!) I don't know what he said to her but he managed to talk her off the ledge, quietly, deftly, and that raised my respect level for the establishment even more.
Exceedingly rare, these days, to have good food and good customer service...
Restaurant Week made me realize I needed to update. Restaurant Week gave me the opportunity to try the lobster curry. *faints* Just when I didn't think I could gush about this place anymore, they give me lobster curry. Out_stand_ing!!
Your Mayor and your Duchess has spoken: Get yourself to Chicago Curry House -- and tell 'em I sent you!
I say 2.5 stars.
Here's what I felt was "meh", the service leaves something to be desire. I don't get to hung up on service unless it's brutally bad, the servers at CCH are mildly annoyed and equally as interested- in other words they're not going out of their way for you.
The food was "meh" for me, there are so many great Indian restaurants in Chicago that blow this place out of the water. Not to be harsh, it wasn't bad it just didn't taste authentic. Places on Devon- obviously authentic, there's a big difference.
Indian food takes a lot of care and precision, the food at CCH again wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable either and the dishes we had reflected that.
I say try Gaylord in the loop, it's fantastic.
Unlike quite a few Indian restaurants off of Devon Avenue, Chicago Curry House is open before 5:00 PM. While in the South Loop section of Chicago, I figured I would have lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. On entry, the restaurant was empty and it was half past the hour of opening. Different.
The buffet was outstanding. There was a wide selection of food and one thing I was glad of was that the spiciness of the food had not been tempered to mild only.
Black eyed peas and potatoes. Butter chicken. Samosas. Spinach pakoras. Daal makhani. Saag paneer. Mango lassi.
I will have to make time to return on of these weekends to see if they change up their buffet. If not for that, then to simply indulge myself again with what they have. It was just that good.
We were really excited to eat here and went out of our way to go because restaurants that serve Nepali food are hard to come by (in the Midwest at least). But the whole experience was very disappointing.
We went for lunch and because there was a buffet, we were discouraged by the staff to order from the menu as the server insisted that the what's on the menu was available on the buffet. Of course...NOT all of it - and not the items I wanted to eat. This was just the beginning of the awkward interaction with the staff, who for us totally ruined the experience. They were distant and aloof; not friendly at all. And although the restaurant was not busy (only 3 tables at lunchtime) the service was slow and reluctant. Some of the dishes were good, but it was difficult to get over how uncomfortable the meal was so we will not be returning, nor will we be recommending this place to friends.
On a random side note, there is no parking for this restaurant. So you have street parking or a lot parking one block away as options if you drive ; just fyi.
The flavors are fresh, buffet is decent (NB all chicken dishes are dark meat)
Samosa-potato to veggie ratio is off and a bit overspiced
Butter chicken- fresh tomato taste, well done. Don't expect white meat
Naan- well done, not out of a bag
Chai- good milky rich chai. Not watered-down
Why only 3? B/c the management, consistently (yes, I've been here more than once) abrasive and aloof. We used our yelp coupon and he asked "you want to use this today?" in disbelief. No, we just wanted to show you how pretty it is, why would we use it on our 3-person buffet? Also the aftermeal condiments at the door are pretty... Rough. We (south Asians) tend to eat "mukhwas" which is a combo of different seeds to aid with digestion & freshen breath, they just have an assortment of whole spices like clove, fennel, and I forgot whatelse. C'mon curry house, do y'all eat that at home like that? Then why are you trying to pass it off to your unknowing customers like that's traditional?!
Too bad I didn't check Yelp before my recent lunch at the Chicago Curry House. Friends and I arrived on a Sunday. We were promptly seated but then the clock started ticking as we waited, and waited, and waited for someone to approach our table and get our drink orders and ask us if we wanted to order from the menu or the buffet. It was an amazingly long time - probably 15-20 minutes before any of the wait staff approached. And, he only did so after one member of my party happened to make eye contact with him. Oh, they were not busy as only about 6 tables were filled. The tables around us were getting attention as the passed right by our table to serve them.
Finally, a waiter approached and asked us if we wanted the buffet or the menu. I said that I wanted a masala tea to which he replied, "I asked if you wanted the buffet." Admittedly I did not answer his question but after walking all over downtown Chicago and then spending another 20 minutes getting pissed off while waiting for service, I wanted a masala tea. I thought his response was very rude.
We ended up taking the buffet, which had a good selection of appetizers, main dishes, salads, and desserts. There were 2 meat dishes and the rest were vegetarian or vegan, which was great for us as we are all vegetarian. The food was fine. Nothing spectacular. The naan was dry and kind of cold. The palak paneer, usually a favorite of mine, was not good. They skimped on the paneer as there were only about 5 pieces in the entire thing. The dish itself was much too creamy and bland. One member of my party referred to it as "sludgy."
This was was my third visit to Chicago Curry House over the past year. But I can definitely say it will be my LAST visit. Â There are too many Indian restaurant choices in Chicago to waste my time and money on sub par service and food that is simply OK.
I'm not sure why this place has bad reviews. The service was excellent - very prompt. It was nicely decorated and seemed very clean. It looked like they had a full bar, although our party only ordered beer so not sure if there is liquor. Parking wasn't bad - we found a metered spot across the street.
I ordered the special Indian vegetable meal. It was South Indian style with little servings of a bunch of dishes. Everything was great. It was a ton of food, so luckily I had people to help me finish it. My father asked for shrimp vindalo which wasn't on the menu, but they happily made it for him. It was my least favorite dish, as I thought it was too sweet - probably made to please the American palate. He liked it and didn't find it too sweet. The palek paneer was my favorite. The naan was great.
Glad to have an Indian restaurant close to the city, and where parking isn't a hassle. I would likely return.
