My friend and I were ecstatic to find this gem yesterday after a round of golf on an unseasonably warm Chicago afternoon ... particularly once we saw the backups on LSD. Â The food was so good and interesting for what we thought would be just a burger and dog shop. I had the fish tacos, and they were about the best I've ever had. Â We both had white wine and couldn't stop commenting on how it was better than most supposed wine bars ... at half the price, too. And the service was exceptional! Â Cornell is a lovely, thoughtful, and really attentive caretaker busting to please his customers and grow this business!! Â I would come back even in inclement weather to enjoy this wonderful place.
Review Source:The kitchen is uneventful, unimagineble and I don't think ever took cooking lessons. Â The $12 burger is a plain burger with fries - not even made here, but a pre-packaged patty. Â Tons of ice in drinks, so little 'drink'. Â Extremely poor service. Â Very dirty floors, floorboards, everything. Â Wait staff totally clueless. Â They only put umbrellas up if people are there. Â Very lazy staff, standing around joking with one another. Â Coming and going. Â Very very sad that this lovely establishment is so very very poorly mismanaged. Â The only good thing is a view from the patio. Â
P.S. they don't open until 10am despite having a huge breakfast crowd off the golf course. Â Who marketed this place? Â Who even researched the vast options????
I've been here twice now. The first time, I just came across it as I had no idea it existed. Yesterday I saw they put up a little sign by the bike path, which is a good idea.
The first time I went, I sat at the bar with a friend after a rousing game of tennis. Cordell was our bartender and he was da bomb! He mixes great drinks, and we trusted him to choose for us. I also had Coronas and they were ice cold!
The 2nd time I went was on the Sunday of the air and water show. I sat on the patio which overlooks the golf course. Service was slow, but they were also more crowded than when I went last, and I didn't mind because I was relaxing. However, even though I didn't mind waiting, I do have to note that the wait staff attended to and served us after a couple tables that got there after us. She kept missing our table and we had to flag her down every time we needed something.
The staff is very friendly, and they'd like to be open all year round. I wouldn't mind being a regular here, but will forego the patio in the winter.
The food is terrible, I would rather that they charged more and gave you some actual food - I ordered the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad - it came in a side salad bowl - there were about 5 pieces of lettuce - it was wilted and dry - I definitely do not think that they cook their chicken there, they must order and buy it. Â If you have golfed or ridden your bike in this 90+ degree weather the last thing I want is a slice of lasagna - I wish they would revamp the menu, hike up the prices and give you some good basic food. Â They are always running out of stuff and seem to have crazy rules, we asked them to cut our Grilled Chicken Salad Stuffed Pita and they said no, then they returned w/ some chicken salad and four cut pieces of pita, when we asked they said that they had run out of pita???? Â Great location, good place to grab a beer and enjoy the view, hope they get it together.
Review Source:Decent food. Great deck overlooking the golf course and views of the lake. Â I did order my burger medium, it took some 30 minutes to come out and when it did it was very well done and the fries on the plate were skimpy! Â I mean you could literally count them!
The server was eager to please she offered a new burger but I said I did not want to wait another 30 minutes. I did order another side of fries and when they came out, again a skimpy order! Â Most places I eat burgers at give you an ample amount, that's an automatic.
Anyways she said the fries were on the house and Chef will discount burger 20% which she did not. Â When the check came the fries were comped and the burger was full price. Â I didn't make an issue I paid my check and left but left thinking WTF...
I more than likely will go back! Â Give them another opportunity if they read this seriously what gives with the fries?! Â I am certain I am not the first and only to notice...
Partner and I met here for lunch recently. I had ridden my bike from the south loop, he from our home at the other end of the golf course. It was hot; I was sweaty. I sat down at the table on the deck with my ubiquitas bottle of Powerade. Our server greeted me promptly with a tall glass of ice. While I may be a gay man, I can honestly say I loved that woman that afternoon. They have a nice selection of beer on tap which I guess is par for the course. Their menu is relatively small but it is well executed. I really enjoyed my Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy and 1/2 pould burger. Partner liked his chicken sandwich with chipotle sauce. It may be just a tad pricey for what one gets but then again one gets to eat very good food on a deck overlooking a green at the golf course on the lake.
Review Source:I moved to Chicago in 2009 and have played at the Waveland golf course countless times. However, the little brick building by the 9th hole has always been unused. Last year the appearance of a deck was an exciting development, but it remained unopened. Â This year the Clock Tower Cafe finally debuted. My wife and I stopped in after a round of golf and loved it. Â It's great to have a place to have a drink, watch sports on one of their several great TVs, or have the options to watch softball off one patio or golf off the other.
It seems like the service seems to be a popular complaint here, but I sat at the bar and the service there was perfect. I had the grilled cheese, a bloody mary, and a Heineken. The grilled cheese was quite delicious, with three different types of cheese. Overall, the prices were less than what I would have expected and the food was better. Although, be careful ordering mixed drinks, because I think the bloody mary was $10. I'll stick to beer next time.
I'm just really excited that there is a place to have a drink and watch some golfers come up to the last hole, and the fact that it exceeded my expectations is just icing on the cake.
Adorable little spot to take a break from a bike ride or head to after a round of golf, playing softball or tennis. Â The only drawback for patrons is I imagine this place will stay VERY busy over the summer. Â I plan to visit again and again. Â Simple menu, good food, cool bar and good service. Â I'll be back.
Review Source:Over the years, I have witnessed  the many reincarnations of this little brick house next to the Waveland Golf Course. It's been Brett's Cafe, a breakfast place, a dreadful hot dog stand, and a nice little sandwich shop. But the golf company who manages the pro shop here has really done a bang up job of renovating and enlarging this space to something more befitting a golf course restaurant or concession.
To begin with, the interior has a new U-shaped bar, surrounded with nicely designed, comfortable dining tables and chairs. The outdoor terrace to the south has a new disabled ramp. From there you can view the folks playing softball or lounging on the grass. But they also opened up the north side with windows, and there is a back patio, which gives out to the golf course. Great view, and so totally different from, say the Oak Street Beach restaurant, with its palm trees and South Beach vibe. Sitting on the back deck at the Clock Tower, the trees are of the deciduous variety, and the scenery is out of a Merchant Ivory film.
As for the menu, it is your standard casual dining choices of appetizers ($5.99-9.99),Two burgers ($11.99) and a hot dog choice($4.99). There are also sandwiches and salads, mostly with chicken, like the familiar Chicken Caesar line up. Sandwiches are all reasonably priced in the $5-7.00 range. Full dinner items are available in the $12.99-15.99 range.
I chose a "Jack-in-the-Hole" which was similar to a Croque Monsieur. Generous sliced ham, cheese on thick square toasted sandwich bread, with a gently cooked egg (yolk still runny) embedded in the top slice. Best eaten with a fork, I think. Nice moderate serving of very good thin crispy fries with a seasoning salt.
I thought the service was excellent. The staff was really welcoming and friendly. There were only a handful of tables on this holiday weekend. That why I LOVE holiday weekends here. Everyone leaves! I took the opportunity to order a pitcher of draft Heineken ($12.00,) since two beers would have been $10.00. And I had all  the time in the world to stare at all those golfers, and eavesdrop on the handful of dining companions. Again, like Oak Street, not as much a culinary destination as a great summer hang. But I will return to try some other items.
I had done most of my lenthgy lakefront  bike ride before I stopped here, but I still had to bike home. All I can say if there is such a thing as a BUI, or biking under the influence, I deserved it after that pitcher. I must have washed down a good six mugs of that icy cold Heineken in the couple hours I spent here. Tough to find a "designated rider."
I am very excited about a new full service bar & restaurant  in this spot. It really adds to our collection and variety of waterfront cafes here in Chicago. And this one has hours from 10AM to 10PM.  So no breakfast service. But lunch or dinner all day. Great place to hang out with a good friend, work your way through a couple of pitchers and into a DUI, a BUI or even a WUI. Whichever suits you, and depending how you got here.
