There's 313 bars in Lakeview. According to a statistic I just made up. For this place to proclaim themselves as the Town Hall of the bar epicenter of Chicago is a bit presumptuous.
I don't fathom why some say in reviews its a rarity for being a dive bar in this area. There's several dive bars in walking distance with more character. This just has a weird layout, is a bit dead, and lacks the quirks and personality other spots have in this neighborhood. Is it even an effective dive then I ask, my dear reader? And $4 Miller Lite bottles....hello if we are paying that price for it I'd expect a more lively, or at the very least, interesting atmosphere. I don't care about their pudding shots or booze soaked Gummy Bears. I don't dislike pudding, candy, or booze...but it feels strange ordering (to ME) absurd, silly dessert shots in a place that reminds me of an empty, dark converted rec room.
Since it's an area that's an embarrassment of riches for drinking spots I felt this is a "skip it." unless of course you're in a time crunch and need an attitude adjustment ASAP.
I love this bar, no wonder it's been voted as one of the Best Dive Bars in Chicago. Went here on a Saturday night and the atmosphere was just perfect. The bartenders were awesome (Chris makes the best Strong Islands and they are only $5) and the people were just really friendly. The drinks are cheap and I surprisingly liked the pudding shots.
I actually like that it's cash only. Helps you keep track of how much you spend and you'll always have some cash to tip the awesome bartenders!
