Oh, Coast. That beautiful beach view. Oh, Coast. That disappointing food.

I brought my family to Coast for dineLA. We ordered everything off the dinner menu.

APPETIZER: The citrus poached prawns is a salad with shrimp on top. The problem was that 2 of the 3 of us who ordered it only got two tiny "shrimp" on our salad. The shrimp were smaller than the ones in a mini shrimp cocktail. And TWO shrimp? C'mon. What it really brought it to light was the fact that my dad's salad had 5. Why do the other plates only have 2? That's a problem. The marinated heirloom tomatoes were another story. Light and refreshing with a balsamic vinaigrette.

ENTREE: The grilled swordfish was cooked just right, but it didn't have any flavoring. The fettuccine was slightly undercooked, but the chunks of short rib were a nice addition to the dish.

DESSERT: The stone fruit cobbler was meh. I should've opted for the chocolate brownie, which my dad loved. He said it was the best he's ever had. The salted caramel ice cream contrasted nicely with the sweetness of the brownie.

OVERALL: I'd give Coast 3 stars, but those damn prawns pissed me off. Skip the meal and come enjoy the view with dessert and coffee.

Stopped by this place after our beach event and had some lunch! Everyone was extremely friendly and beyond helpful! It was a very pleasant and welcoming place to dine! We had amazing smoothies pineapple coconut which tasted just like Hawaii! We also ate the chili and corn beef hash and eggs! It was super yummy. More importantly the customer service was beyond amazing! Thank you!

The location is beautiful, but that's about it. The shrimp cocktail was $18 and only had 5 prawns. Our party of 8 all agreed that the price of the food was way to high for the low quality-- it just wasn't that good. And the over priced Margarita and Bloody Mary were pretty weak.

Really glad I stumbled upon this gem in Santa Monica. Love the location and decor and it's just upscale enough to keep the riff raff out.

On both evenings, the service was awesome. From the hostess to the servers and managers, everyone was really extending themselves to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. Service was prompt and attentive and friendly.

So why only 3 stars?

The food.

Their selections for cheese and charcuterie were excellent, as was the wine list. However, prepared dishes fell a bit flat. Anything with mussels in it smelled and tasted a bit too gamey for me and most of the other dishes we tried, again, just fell sort of flat - like they were missing something.

If you're in the area and want a great view of the beach in a really inviting decor with top notch service, Coast is great. Turn it up a notch with the prepared dishes and this place would be a home run.

A friends suggestion of a bucket list place for brunch... As I was not told where I would be going I couldn't say I would prefer to go somewhere else in Santa Monica that was not on the beach on a grey gloomy day with nothing to see nor attached to a hotel and was twice the price I planned on spending for brunch for ok food.

Anyhow, as I said the day was not a beach day. The restaurant was mostly full (of tourists) and we decided to sit at the bar and split the $17 Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and the $15 egg sandwich. The service was timely and pleasant.

The food was just ok. The pancakes were the star, served with mixed berries. The egg sandwich wasn't so great - the bread could have been toasted more - and the sandwich was a little bland.

A great location on Santa Monica beach with a beautiful patio. There was construction on the beach that made the location a little noisy, but that is a VERY temporary issue. I fully plan on returning here for drinks.
The service was great on a Monday afternoon. I sat right down and was brought some tasty chips and a bowl of nuts to much on while I enjoyed my cocktails. The bar staff can talk intelligently about the drinks they serve, and recommended I try the E&O, a surprisingly refreshing bourbon drink that was perfect on a sunny June afternoon. I also tried their spin on a Manhattan/Old Fashioned called the New Yorker which was also not a heavy drink at all, and was almost floral (they put elderflower in most of the cocktails on the menu).
Highly recommended if you have some time to sit and contemplate while enjoying Santa Monica beach.

This place charges more because it's in a fancy hotel. I've had several meals here, and it's been hit or miss. The seared tuna with bean salad was great. The lobster in the lobster salad was overcooked. The steak was decent, but the accompanying sauteed spinach salad wasn't really sauteed, and was about 50% bad, yellowing spinach- a real shock. Good cocktails. Good oysters. Great atmosphere. If you dine here, choose wisely.

Went to this place for lunch and I loved it.

Service: Service overall was good. The waiter was very attentive and always came around to fill the water glasses up.

Atmosphere: Great atmosphere. Restaurant is in a hotel on the coast with an ocean view in the back. Very nice patio set up.

Food: My group all had the shaved roast beef sandwich. By far the best roast beef sandwich I had. Bread was perfectly toasted and the au jus and horseradish sauce that came with it was delicious. Fries went very well with the meal as well. We had the 7 layer chocolate cake for dessert and it was delicious! Very rich but worth every bite.

Refrigerated cold fish tacos, that should have been hot. Slow night on Tuesday and slow service to match.. wtf?

Two stars-extra star for the cute decor. Other than that-YUCK.

Ordered: Two orders of the fish and chips, one calamari and one Caesar salad. Fish tasted like frozen stuff from a grocery store. Fries were stone cold...sent both back for a hot plate---was brought fries that were lukewarm. Calamari was good, but serving was pretty small. Salad was average. very difficult to get attention for refills on coffee, coke, etc....

Did this place change hands? We use to come here when it was called Pedals and it was much better. Sadly, we won't be back. Poor quality food, poor service and high prices----there are too many other places to go in Santa Monica.

My friend had been wanting to try Shutters and called to make a reservation. When we arrived, we realized there was a formal restaurant inside Shutters hotel (and they didn't have have our reservation) and then we realized we must have reserved a table at their more casual restaurant downstairs, on the beach - Coast! I'm so glad we ended up here because it was great. It's super cute and beachy, still extremely nice and high class but a little less formal than the other restaurant there. I believe there was some outside seating available. But we sat indoors and had beautiful beach views from the windows. Our service was very good and the food was delicious. I had the salmon and they had no problem swapping out asparagus for spinach instead. I'd recommend trying to go around sunset for the breath-taking views. Definitely a nice spot and I'm sure I'll go back!

I love this place. Their happy hour is from about 4 to 7, which means you can enjoy your drink while watching the sunset.

When it comes to the food, I suggest the farmers market dinners on Wednesday nights. Basically, for $25, you get a 2 course dinner prepared with fresh ingredients that the chef found at that day's farmers market. Since its all impromptu, you never really know what treat you'll be getting that night. I think its the perfect meal for a date, since the meal will give you a lot to talk about and anticipate.

On Thursdays, they have a bbq and blues dinner for $25. Again, you get 2 courses, plus get to listen to local blues artists. The decor is perfect for romance, and again, I think its great for a date.

These two options are definitely cheaper for a date than going to other nice restaurants, plus, you can always take a nice walk on the beach after your meal.

When it comes to the regular menu, I've only eaten there during dinner so I can't say much about the breakfast or lunch menus. What I really like about Coast is that its a nice restaurant, with gorgeous views and elegant vibe, all at an affordable price.

However, I recommend you try:

APPETIZERS

The fried calamari $12.50, its a simple dish, but when done as meticulously at Coast, really stands out.

The crab cocktail $16, its a classic cocktail done right.

Fresh oysters, $11 for 6.

ENTREES

The Nicoise salad with seared ahi, $22, is delicious.

The grilled swordfish, $25, is a good sized piece of fresh fish as is the....

....Broiled halibut with a champagne sauce and asparagus, $26. Both are highly recommended.

As a side, I prefer the garlic bread, $4.

This review is a little late in the posting--I was here 12/30/2012, but I'm pretty sure nothing has changed...

Anyway, I presume that the high prices here are due to the great location because the food was on par with any number of sports bars I've been to--good enough if you're not paying close attention to the food. I didn't expect to look down my nose at anything I ate in the greater LA area, but this one surprised me. I hear that menu prices jumped after rumors of celebrity sightings cropped up over the last couple of years.

So anyway, there was the calamari for $15 from the appetizer menu (I really should upload the photo--it's really moderate and not impressive), and I stopped there as my friend had to leave, and this appetizer was taking forever to to arrive. C'est la vie.

Our waiter was a great guy though. Good staff.

note, there is no happy hour on fridays. boooooo.

came here recently on one of my rare days off from work (good friday) to celebrate. we opted for the small shellfish platter since there was no happy hour. also note, the dungenous crab is not a whole crab - rather, it's a bit of chunk meat in a shotglass. slightly dissapointed about that too.

dont forget to have your parking validated for the valet!

Meh, okay. Pretty stuffy and pricey for food that's fine....but really nothing spectacular. $28 for a lobster roll with oily potato chips. $25 for a crab louie salad. Kind of a let down. I get a feeling you're paying for the view

Summary from an LA resident: The Coast has good looks and sights but that's not what LA is about.

Everyone can agree that the beach / pier / ocean views are beautiful and the interior is well-composed. Bummer the sights become miniscule when the service is sour from start to finish. Brief explanation for dinner, 4/7/13:

Firstly, please bring this to your web master's attention:

" Join us on the Coast patio every Sunday for a movie night! Show times begin at 6:00pm. Food/drink specials from 6:00pm-9:00pm. "

CORRECTIONS
* Show times begin at 7PM
* NO food or drink specials (at least that's what we were told)
**Reservations highly suggested to ensure a seat on the patio

We arrived w/o a reservation but well before the movie time (5:30pm) trusting the info on the website (6pm), in reality, 7pm. When inquiring about getting a table w/o a reservation, the hostess was reluctant and unwilling to accommodate our party of 3 due to an expected "full house", which later turned out to be a 75% capacity on the outdoor patio. (We were in no mood after the overpriced dinner to stay.)

Next, the hostess was unhelpful and subtly condescending when we asked for suggestions to pass the 1.5 hours before we'd find out if a table would be granted to us. "Well...some people sit at the bar...if they're old enough." no comment.

Since we wanted our valet to be validated, we got a table in the dining room. Our waiter was impatient and irritable from placing order to getting the check. Even with the fairly acceptable, fresh guac and chips (14$), and lightly crispy but greasy calamari (14$) appetizers, the service was just heavily impolite.

Coming from experience in customer service, I understand people have sour days on the job, but hopefully those who work here can wear a pleasant enough demeanor (at least a light smile) to meet the minimum expectation for a $$$ restaurant, ESPECIALLY since this is a popular tourist spot.

Tonight's service is not an acceptable way to represent LA.

I still left gratuity, but that doesn't mean I have respect for the Coast.

Ever since I saw a highlight of Heidi Klum and Seal re-do their vows at the Coast I had a fantasy of dining here on a lovely sunny morning for brunch. Last year, it finally materialized! It was perfect...beautiful day at the beach and my friend and I practically had the place to ourselves. We sat indoors by the glass windows with an amazing view of the beach/ocean and our waiter was handsome, witty, and charming! I had the lemon ricotta pancakes with fresh berries and my friend had the eggs benedict. Both were perfect ~ the pancakes were a splendid mix of slight sweet and perfect lemon essence. I savored every bite and every moment of being there! I always think back with fondness as one of my dreams had come true.~

Lunch was ok, nothing special. Basic lunch fare. My friend had an average sandwich. I had a fish salad, just ok. I had to ask for bread, it was way too stale to eat. We had to keep asking for more water & beers.

Nice and cozy restaurant with a beautiful beach view of Santa Monica! I like the color scheme and the layout of the restaurant.

Staff was fast and friendly.

Way over-priced for breakfast though. $60 for two people. I think OJ was like $8! Someone better be squeezing those oranges as soon as I ordered the damn drink!

This was one of the highlights of my trip to California though. Good times!

We went for diner during the dineLA week. Food was great: crab toast, clams pasta, the location is awesome with sunset, but the service was bad.

They forgot our reservation! We went to the front in person and made a reservation for a half hour later. We came back on time and we saw them give our table to somebody else. The person who took our reservation was not there anymore and the second person could not find a trace of our reservation. Then we had to wait 25 minutes. A bit messy.

Also the waitress was a confused person. We would ask for things and she would forget. She would not come for a while but we could see her inside having a chat with other staff. A woman next to our table had to walk inside to ask for tabasco. I've never seen this before!

I hope they will fix their issues, it's a bit of a waste at this point.

It's your standard brunch menu.

Ordered: Eggs Benedict, Eggplant and Spicy Tomato Skillet good but don't expect it to knock your socks off. The Lemon Ricotta Pancakes on the other hand is delicious! It was just right, light, a little crispy on the edges and the tartness of the fruits accompanied it very well. I'm always skeptical of ordering any ricotta pancakes because of the grainy texture. Don't know what they did here but there was none of that.

Ambiance: Classic California beachside interior. You can't help but feel relaxed and happy sitting here. I'm a big fan of the Shutters' decor already. But they did such an amazing job with this section. It's cozy and unpretentious. I adore all the little details of this restaurant- the leather bar stools, marble tables and the striped upholster seat nook outside.

Service: Was great!

I've been to Coast a number of times, mostly for brunch and a few times for dinner. I've been heartily disappointed each and every single time I've eaten here.

I do love the atmosphere-- I'm from the northeast, so the Maine-style decor really makes me feel at home. Even the waiters are all wearing Vineyard Vines belts and ties.

It does, however, go all downhill from there. The menu, first of all, is completely astronomically priced. Any entree you might order for brunch is approx $20 a plate. A very standard 2 eggs, bacon and potatoes will cost you $18, just as the Grilled King Salmon (?) will cost you a similar $20. The food is never impressive and on par with something I could pull together at home for much cheaper, be it the french toast, the lemon-ricotta pancakes, whatever. The burger is fine, but only because I don't typically get pretzel buns when I make burgers at home (and, seriously, its $18; not even Father's Office is that pricey). One time I ordered their pineapple coconut-smoothie, foolishly thinking it would be fresh-made, only to catch the person behind the bar doing nothing more than pouring it out of a carton from the fridge.

Even worse is dinner.

Guacamole alone is $14 and that's the cheapest app on the menu. No bread, but you have pre-wrapped breadsticks off the supermarket shelf waiting for you to make a mess of crumbs with. If you look at the very bottom of the menu in the side dishes list, you can find a basket of garlic bread for $5, so go for that instead.

I admittedly can't even remember what I ate the first time I had dinner here, which is a bad sign in itself, but I did get the jumbo shrimp the last time I was there a few weeks ago. I cannot begin to say how disappointed I was with the shrimp. They were horribly overcooked and with little flavor. I did not send them back only because, after a year of not eating shellfish, my boyfriend's mother also got the shrimp and loved them and I didn't want to risk her changing her mind and continuing her ban on shellfish.

For those of you who do want to still give it a try for yourself, the best dish I've ever tasted there is the steak-frites. But in the end, it's just skirt steak and french fries. $28 but.... if you must, you must.

The service is fine, but never spectacular. They're often too busy to pay that much attention to you.

Maybe I'll save money up to go their clambake or something like that one of these nights, but that would be the only reason I would go back and spend my own money. The Boyfriend knows not to take me there; now if only we can get his mother to figure out that it's not worth it as well, we'll be all set.

Wow. Exceptional place.

RIGHT ON THE BEACH. Practically tasting the ocean (that would suck, tho).

First of all, I must say, BEST wait staff in LA. Nicest people I've ever met. So many ethnicities. White, black, Latino, Latina, Asian...you name it, they had it. I really liked that about this place. I got to know a lot of the workers at this place because they are so friendly. Alex, Dylan, Justin, Liz, Nikki, Katrina, etc. . these guys were great. Even the busboys were kicking major ass. I bet their manager really appreciates them and takes care of them.

Secondly, the food and drinks were great! We ordered a few drinks from the bartender. His name was Flip (his real name is Felipe, but he liked us so he let us call him Flip). He was concocting some delicious Mojitos, bloody Marys, and Colorado Bulldogs. He nailed it each time. Best bartender in LA. The kitchen also comped us a plate of chips and guac! Wow, who knew? Delicious. Very thankful.

Thirdly, the atmosphere is great. Right off the beach. Right off the strand. Oh, wow. What a restaurant atmosphere. Gorgeous. Celebs in there all the time. Very fun place to sit down and enjoy yourself and the sun!

Lastly, this place is always busy!! SOOOO busy. I like that. The hustle and bustle of this place is great. I'm sure the waitstaff hates it, but I enjoyed the running and gunning of this restaurant.

Side-note: Pretty expensive. It's like 30 bucks for a lobster roll that looks like a crab-bun or something. Drinks are a bit pricey, too, I recommend checking out happy hour.

The managers are also very cool. Daytime manager's name is Christopher. He's a big guy from Newport Beach. Classy gentlemen. You'll never see him in a tie. You'll recognize him. He'll take care of you. Other manager is Manuela. She is also a breath of fresh air.

PROS: SERVICE IS AWESOME
-Friendly
-Right by the beach
-Valet parking
-Not too stuffy
-Always a good time
-Tasty treats and drinks
-Best waitstaff in LA

CONS: Pricey
-Pretty busy

CHECK OUT COAST. NOW. Tell them Sean sent you.

Enjoy the sun,

Sean

This place was great; the location and atmosphere have a lot to do with it!

I met my family here who was in from NY for breakfast. As many other have reviewed, the Lemon Ricotta pancakes were to die for! I want to make the drive from Long Beach JUST to have that dish! haha (I guess I could try and make them at home)

Anyway, this is a great spot. It's nice to be able to take a walk after you have had a hearty breakfast as well. Nothing beats a restaurant on a beach!

I had the greatest meal at Coast last night! It was just around 5 and we were really too hungry to wait for One Pico to open for dinner at 6...so glad we chose to go downstairs instead! I had eaten at Coast before for brunch but never for dinner. On Monday evenings they do a traditional Clambake for 1 or 2...complete with an oyster shooter :)

We started with a beet salad...nothing remarkable but delicious none-the-less...just pure, fresh ingredients...a mixture of beets, goat cheese and arugula. Again nothing remarkable but tasty!

The oyster shooter was served atop a shot glass of pickled vodka (you have your choice of vodka or gin) and was surprisingly tasty.

We ordered the Clambake for 2 and it nearly took my breath away when it was served! A beautiful large bowl of clams, mussels, large shrimp, a split lobster and fresh crab meat. Along with all of this fresh seafood, there were ears of corn and fingerling potatoes swimming in a delicious broth of wine and herbs! We did ask for some bread for "dunking" and our waitress was kind enough to bring us some perfectly grilled bread. (We even suggested that the bread accompany the meal on a normal basis...it would be a shame to let all of that delectable broth go to waste!)

Feeling indulgent, we decided to end the evening with a slice of coconut cake and coffee. The coconut cake was perfectly moist and sweet and had bits of fresh pineapple interspersed throughout...perfect ending to a great meal!

I will definitely make it a point to return another Monday evening for Coast's clambake!

**On a side note-You really can't ask for a greater location at sunset than Coast...right along the bike/walking path and Santa Monica beach. Also, the person I was with was a bit on the chilly side and they were kind enough to bring her a cozy cable knot blanket to wrap up in so she could enjoy her dinner...nice touch!)

I thought this was a nice little spot for breakfast or brunch. You are going to drop some coin as a side of bacon will cost you 7.50. I had the egg sandwich which had crisp thick bacon, fresh bib lettuce, with egg on chibata bread. Really nice and not to bad at 15 bucks. Came with a side of breakfast potatoes which were seasoned very nicely. You can sit out on the beach or stay inside. This restaurant is right on the beach so you can't beat the scene or views. A must try if you are in Santa Monica.

Came here for dinner.

Parking - Valet only, honestly I really dislike places that ONLY valet (NOT for $ reason). It's $7.00 with validation, plus tips $12.

Seats - Very comfy. We sat by the window that looks out and is next to the beach and sand. Very pretty view.

Service - He is so-so helpful, but didn't seem to be very friendly.

Food -
Grilled Swordfish - It came with asparagus, it was nicely done, but you can't really mess up on just grilled fish as long as the fish is fresh.

Rib Eye - Asked for medium, came medium well, not so tender or juicy, not very tasty.

Portions were very small, I need to eat two entrees to feel anything. Price was reasonable on the menu, but not if I need to eat two entrees.

If I ever come back again I want to try dishes that require more skill to see if it's up to standard.

Had the worst experience here. I took my mom here for brunch today. We had just left and paid for for our meal when a server, who was not ours, ran after us and asked us if we had paid. This server profiled us because we are black. There were other patrons there who left at the same time who were not harassed and followed. They were white btw. Our server was still on the floor at the time and if this server thought we were walking out on our bill he could have asked her. I've never felt such racism before in my life. Not something you expect in Santa Monica or anywhere for that matter. I would love to believe we live in a post-racial world. But racism is alive and well at Shutters on the beach.

We loved it!
I went there with my husband and our 4 yrs old for lunch while visiting SM.
The boy had the ravioli with tomato sauce with slow cooked veal.
We had the Medium platter for the raw bar and the roasted beet salad with pinot grigio and beer.
I loved it! exactly the place i wanted to be that day, the decor is great, very beachy!!! The workers were all amazing, very attentive without being over polite, which I appreciate. I am not from this country and I do not like people talking to me as if I were a little 5 years old princess. I am an adult and you dont need you to suck at my .... to be treated right.
Next time I am in SM I would like to go just with my husband for dinner.
Loved this place!

Great location. This place is on the ground floor - beach side in the Shutters hotel. http://www.shuttersonthe…

I've only dined here once but I will be back. It's off the walking path (at the beach) just south of the Santa Monica Pier. I visit the beach there often.

I walked in and was greeting by a cute girl and she seated me right away (next to a window with a view of the beach).

My server came quickly, greeted me politely and with a great smile. I ordered.

Ice tea and bread sticks came out quickly. The bread sticks are pre-packaged, and they set many packs on the table in a tall glass. They were fine but with the prices here, I would expect fresh bread.

I had the lobster roll with french fries. Loved the fries! I probably won't get the sandwich again. The lobster itself was great! Fresh and lots of big chunks. The mayo sauce was bland and not exciting. The bread didn't fit well. It's a bit big and dense. I think it should be served on a softer roll. Also, the flavor almost overpowers the subtle flavor of the lobster.

Service was outstanding.

It's a nice looking place and if you're lucky, you can get a good view.

FYI - Iced tea $4.00 Lobster roll (with fries or salad) $26.00 Tax $2.78
Total = $32.78 + tip

This was my fourth or fifth visit. Location and atmosphere highlights have been outweighed by a truly mediocre kitchen.

Steak Frites had the worst presentation I've ever seen in a dish - in fact, their presentation is worse than most cafes that are 1/2 the cost; at least pretend to care! I was also extremely disappointed by the impoverished scotch offerrings (they had one - Dewars'). Total Fail.

I've been to Coast 4-5 times now and consistently find myself thinking, "Why did I chose this place over One Pico? What is so great here that I'm paying more for?" Although the food is fine, I think it's time to lower my rating - consistent & blatant mediocrity deserves to be avoided.

It was a nice night, so after dinner at The Misfit we walked to Coast located at the beach side hotel, Shutters on the Beach. Coast has a very "airy" and "beachy" feel to it which compliments its location on the sands of Santa Monica Beach. We sat in their enclosed patio. We came here for after dinner drinks.

Cayla went with red wine as usual. As many of you know I am a big fan of the cocktail, the Old Fashioned. So needless to say when I saw a "New Fashioned" on their specialty cocktail menu I HAD TO try it! It was very good, much lighter in taste than an Old Fashioned. Dare I use the word, REFRESHING! This of course is due to the St. Germain Elderflower, a Parisian liqueur made from elderberry flowers.

Cayla and I both enjoyed Coast's atmosphere and good service. We didn't order any food, but we enjoyed our drinks.

I know it's a little late, but this place was one of the highlights of my Valentines Day evening. I got off work early and the boyfee did the same. However, our reservations weren't until 9 pm so we figured COCKTAIL TIME! Cocktails overlooking the sunset somewhere in Santa Monica because it's V-Day and when else can you demand something like that?

The long and the short of it: terrific location, view and wait til you see the bar area! This place reminds me of an Old World beachside town. We had two manhattans and, seeing as we didn't want to be Tipsy TInas on our empty stomachs, the happy hour ceviche. The ceviche was damn good - garnished perfectly. The price is a little sassy, but you totally pay for the view.

Good service, awesome location, etc. I'd definitely recommend this seaside restaurant.

This place is a complete fail. If it weren't for the ambiance, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The wine list is sad. The wines I had were sad. The beet salad was sad (arugula was tough and the beets were dried out). The raw seafood platter was the only highlight of the dinner compared to the other dishes we had. My fish of the day (halibut) was tiny and grilled into a dried piece of cardboard. My boyfriend's steak (he asked for medium-rare) was pretty much well done. The lobster bisque was more like a lobster broth. The pot de creme for dessert was OK. They serve grissini sticks here, no bread basket.

Service was sub par. Waiter forgot we ordered coffee. She couldn't find a steak knife for the steak. Didn't ask if I wanted another glass of wine (such an easy sell, especially when I'm feelin' good from the first glass). Water glasses weren't filled unless we asked for a refill. I have to add that this place wasn't even busy, so no excuses.

I doubt I'll ever come back. If I do come back, it'll be during sunset by the beach for only a drink and maybe a seafood platter.

No Shutters, just no.

This place is awful, but its constantly busy from people staying at shutters who are too lazy to read Yelp and find some amazing food nearby.

Its expensive and the food is really diner food being surved in an "upscale" restaurant.

I had a bowl of yogurt with fruit ($13) an orange juice (I believe $6, and it wasn't fresh squeezed) and my BF had an egg/sausage/potato dish which I think was roughly $15.

The quality was on par with Denny's, and I'd highly recommend using Yelp to find something but better and cheaper close by - like Cora's Coffee Shop!

If Martha Stewart had a restaurant along a beach boardwalk it would look a lot like this. Wait? Does she have such a thing? Maybe this is hers? It's not, but come to think of it, why doesn't she have a restaurant?

Anyhow, no beach views from this cafe located right along the Santa Monica beach boardwalk, but good breakfast food in a very pretty, airy, white-washed ambience. They get a good crowd on the weekends but you may be able to snag a counter seat as this part of the restaurant is first come-first served.

I really enjoyed my coffee and my "bull's-eye" breakfast skillet" ($17) which was roasted eggplant in a deliciously savory, spicy tomato sauce topped by two sunny-side up eggs. If I had a complaint it's only that I was left a bit hungry and would've liked more food; the dish didn't come with toast or potatoes. (I know... no carbs; it's L.A.).

They sell a nice looking cookbook here that would make a great gift for someone who enjoys yummy sounding recipes and mouth-wateringly pretty photo accompaniments. It even includes the "bull's eye" recipe. If you make it at home you can serve it up with some carbs to complete the meal.

I've walked by Shutters a hundred times but I never walked inside until yesterday. I'm so glad I did!

Two girlfriends and I decided to check out Coast Beach Cafe & Bar for happy hour (takes place every day from 4-7pm).

Absolutely gorgeous setting, so fresh and so clean with a cool beach breeze and lazy late afternoon sunlight streaming in through the windows. Amazing view of the ocean and people strolling by on the boardwalk outside.

We were seated promptly in a comfortable booth, poured water and given crunchy little breadsticks in individually wrapped packages to nibble on as we perused the happy hour menu.

- $5/order: mussels in garlicky butter, mini crab cakes, pulled pork slider, nachos, calamari ahi tuna w/unagi sauce and lemon, parmesan garlic fries, etc.

- $1.50/ea mini tacos

- $6/4 or $9 for 6 fresh oysters

- $4 beers and $7 mixed drinks including a mojito, pomegranate pineapple wave, etc.

Amazing prices in a beautiful setting for tasty food! We tried the mussels (FANTASTIC, our favorite - I wanted to drink the leftover butter in the bowl), mini crab cakes (fantastic and flavorful but very, very small), oysters (fresh and yummy), fish tacos (awesome!), and drinks (mojito, wave and wine).

Service was excellent, our drinks were strong and our water glasses were always filled. They had a tendency to clear things away a little too quickly (some before we were done!) but other than that everyone was friendly and everything was impeccable.

We read over the dinner menu (VERY pricey) and opted to stick with happy hour specials. The total for three of us for drinks and tons of appetizers was $51, we left $60 and were all happy and surprisingly full. I'd definitely be back but probably only for happy hour or a special prix fixe menu night. Highly recommend for the happy hour, see you there!
