I'm not really sure what the appeal of this place is, especially with the far-superior Tortilla West just down the street. I stopped in with a friend one night and we had some sort of flautas special and a bowl of vegetarian chili. The flautas were disgustingly greasy and the chili was inedibly bland. Oh yeah, and it was expensive to boot. Their beer selection was ok, but certainly not enough to warrant another visit to this place.
Review Source:Excellent food! Fast friendly service. Really interesting combinations of tacos and the burritos are enormous and delicious. I only took off a star because of accessibility issues in the bathrooms. Couldn't get my wheel chair in the bathroom at all. Love the habanero mango salsa. Mojito was pretty good too.
Review Source:Colley Cantina is my go to for TexMex in Ghent. Â Ok, well, it is also the ONLY place I know for TexMex in my little corner of Ghent, so maybe it isn't really a fair fight after all...
About a year ago, CC closed its doors with no indication of what was next, other than it would possibly come back as Colley Cantina with a new menu or it would come back as something completely different. Â We got Choice Number One, which was a relief to me. Â For some reason in my head, SoCal Beach Vibe works really nicely in Ghent, even though it should not.
The new menu was worth waiting for, especially the salsa menu. Â Mango Habanero is one of my favorites, the corn salsa is worth it as well. Â Plus, you can get any of your favorite dishes made with any of the signature salsas!
This is also a good place to stop in for a drink, it is casual and usually a great place to run into an interesting conversation. Make this the first stop of the evening for drinks and appetizers, it will be the start of a pretty decent night.
They have karaoke here as well at least one night a week. Â Take heart, though, I'm usually out of town that night so your eardrums will be safe.....
I have been hearing and reading about Colley Cantina since I moved to the Hampton Roads area, but hadn't convinced my husband to try it with me until a couple of weeks ago. I know I'm writing this review late, but I figured I needed to since the delicious food is still on my mind!
The place is small, a very local-feeling place, and I bet it feels packed in the warm weather when everyone is out on their patio area and the inside is full as well. We went on a cold day in March for dinner and sat at one of the really small tables towards the back. I could tell my husband felt cramped but he seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere (AKA a few basketball games were playing on the TVs). It took a minute for a waitress to get our drink orders, but she was knowledgeable about the vast and ever-changing beer selection, and I ordered the beer on tap that she recommended to me, some kind of dark vanilla beer. Â It was yummy and was nice to sip on while we had chips and salsa (also very delicious!) Hubs had sweet tea as usual, and it was pre-sweetened (as he feels it should be in the South!). The menu isn't incredibly big, but you can certainly mix and match tacos and toppings enough to get what you want. I had the fish tacos baja style, so with shredded cabbage, cilantro and lime, and hubs ordered the jerked chicken meal. He was sweating so much because it was so spicy, but he clearly loved it and ate the entire plate. I tasted some and found it pretty good, even though I usually am not a fan of jerk chicken. My fish tacos were REALLY flavorful and not overly fishy. The only downside is that you get two of them unless you order corn tortillas, and it's not a particularly hefty meal to match the slightly expensive price. We had a good time and we'll likely go back, although we might try to go during a happy hour or some kind of special deal day, to avoid paying so much. I think for what we ordered we paid over $40 plus tip.
I would be interested to know if they do take-out, as well, since I have friends who live really close in Ghent and it would be a good meal to eat outside on thier deck at their apartment instead of being concerned about being cramped or waiting in long lines at the restaurant.
Doesn't taste good, but at least it's expensive.
CC used to be a dump with cheap chips and beer, and crappy food.
It is now very nice inside with a SoCal vibe. The chips and beer cost more, and the food is still crappy.
I don't know who came up with the menu but its a poor imitation of whatever "fusion" style it is they are going for.
The burrito I ordered sounded fantastic on the menu, and I was excited to try it. I told the server it must be the wrong burrito since I couldn't taste any of the flavors the menu described. The manager came out and argued with me instead of trying to make it right.
Another chance for ghent to get one right, flushed down the tubes. Sucks.
My mom and I went out for dinner. My mom suggested the new Colley Cantina. The new digs are quite nice and tropic. The suffer swag is everywhere, which makes the feel very laid back. The patio has a overhang and an open area.
The food is typical bar food. I was hoping since it was revamped it would have been different, but no the food and drinks were still the same.
It is the typical bar feel if your just looking to kickback.
I was happy that this restaurant reopened, because I never managed to eat here before it closed a few months back. I came here a few nights ago with my parents. It has a good selection of local and esoteric beers. The waitstaff has more of the grungy look to them; but don't let that appearance fool you, because our waitress was awesome. My mom got the korean BBQ tacos, I got the pork burrito, and my dad got the fresh catch of the day fish jerked style. There is also 4 or 5 varieties of salsa that you can choose with your dish. The ingredients were fresh, our food was quickly prepared and hot. The prices are cheap ($8.99ish). I liked my mom's korean BBQ tacos better than my burrito. You don't get any side dishes with your entree (e.g. rice), but you will be able to eat your entire dish and feel satisfied.
The ambience is laid-back. There are different areas to sit at: outside, underneath an open window porch, or inside. There's also a bar area with high stools and tables for the people wanting to just drink.
Overall a cool place to hang out and lounge. My mother, who normally doesn't like this kind of food, wants to come back here again. And I'm all for it as well.
I liked it better under the previous management. After San Antonio Sam's closed, this was my favorite happy hour spot. They used be known for their delicious $4.50 mojitos during happy hour when they also had cheap tacos and free homemade salsa and chips. Sure it was bar quality food, but it's a bar! Now there are no food specials for happy hour and the drinks are much more expensive. Even chips and salsa cost extra! The chips are very greasy and over salted. Ick.
The previous owners didn't keep it as clean, but again that didn't matter much when it was a good watering hole. Now they're trying to make a restaurant out of a bar, but the space just isn't laid out for it.
I didn't really do much Colley Cantina before they switched owners. Â Since the switch I've been back several times and really enjoyed overall atmosphere and food. Â
The beer selection is pretty good. Â On two occasions I had to order 3 times before I found a beer they weren't out of, though. Â I won't hold this against them as long as it doesn't become a common occurrence. Â
As far as food goes, this place really does it for me. Â They have a tex-mex type selection that feels more like bar food than your typical tex-mex place. Â Don't let that throw you off, though, it's delicious. Â I really like their pulled pork burritos (don't forget to ask them for hot sauce--they've got a good selection of that too).
Bar. Bar bar a bar it's a bar BARRRR!
From the website it seems to be a "baja" place. Don't think of it like anything you'd eat in California or Mexico though (if you've ever been there). Semi-slow service, creative menu, not-very-tasty-food.
The groupon seemed to be a great way for them to attract business though.
I'm a BIG fan of the new menu. I went with my boyfriend and some friends this summer the last weekend the old Colley Cantina was open, and understood why it was closing their doors. I didn't think that I would ever go back; when I saw that there was a Groupon for it, I mentioned to the boy what a shame it was that the place had been so gross over the summer. I guess he had dropped in at one point and said that the updated menu was actually pretty good, nothing like the dive we walked into this summer. Skeptical, I purchased the Groupon.
And I was very pleased with my purchase! The new owners have done a fantastic job overhauling the menu and making the place a bit cleaner. There are lots of great options on the menu, too - we recently went with a friend who can't eat carbs, and while she usually hates resigning to just ordering salad whenever we go out to eat, she was also very happy with the choice to go there! The Kobe short rib quesadilla was really good, as were the pork tacos that I had. If you get the tacos on the three corn tortillas, you'll discover that the tacos are actually each wrapped in two tortillas, making them much easier to eat. The presentation was really beautiful, too, which was admittedly a nice touch.
I can't comment much on the drink specials or anything else, but it looks like they have a trivia night, karaoke night, and a few other specials throughout the week. I'm excited to go back soon!
I was not a fan of the old Colley Cantina (previous owners), but I saw a groupon since it was renovated and wanted to give it a chance. Overall I'm glad I did, but would rate it closer to 3.5 than 4.
The atmosphere was the first change I noticed, which is now a California-style mexican theme (complete with videos of surfing). The other welcomed change was the plethora of drink specials! It seemed like every day had some type of special, and on the Friday we came, there was $1 off (might have been 2?) any alcoholic drink. This was great in theory, however we got a pitcher to share and I only noticed when I got home (aka sober) that they didn't take it off on the bill. Not cool!
The menu has completely changed also! The waitress said the highlight was the fish tacos, but I got a burrito. Tacos and burritos pretty much dominate the menu, and they can be customized to your taste! The best part of all (for me) was that the burritos were very affordable (I think around $7-8) as were all of the tacos except the grilled fish tacos ($11! o_0). Everyone was happy with their food and the burrito was much more unique than Chipotle at just a little more money. The tacos seemed a little small portioned if you were hungry. They had a few appetizers, but we got the chips and salsa/guac--you get free refills (but not the guac), and we shared with a table of 6! A+ for value.
tip: I noticed they have trivia night once a week (which has a drink special)!
Bottom line: If you left unsatisfied at the old CC (or never tried it in the first place) and are in the mood for Mexican and a drink, give this place a try. It's not the best I've ever had, but the prices are right and the atmosphere is cool! Just be sure to check the bill carefully to make sure any specials are applied.
Did I mention a wide variety of vegan options!
Tried the tofu and daiya quesadilla which was so tasty! Unfortunately the order came out wrong the first time but our server was an absolute gem and totally took care of the mishap. Both visits have found a bustling crowd here and every time I walk by on Colley they always seem to be pretty busy.
Woo!
New Colley Cantina is delightful. We had a bunch of people in town due to a family funeral. It had been a really long day for everyone and we needed a place to grab a drink and relax. This was a hit.
The Good:
1. $4 local brews. They have a wide selection of beer including several locals.
2. The food was tasty. Get the tacos or burrito.
3. Service was great.
4. There is a wall of hot sauces.
Only thing I would change is the lack of music.
I would go back!
This place is really awesome. Not your normal heavy 5 pound burrito mexican place where you leave feeling like a brick. Its very well done mexican, street tacos, fish tacos, salads, etc and also a hand selected choice of craft beers which seems rare to me in Hampton Roads compared to where I am from in DC/MD area. This place is really good and I highly recommend.
