Great bar with great prices. Might be my favorite bar in Astoria. If only it were a little closer...

By the by, if you've never seen the bartender putting on a magic show - it's awesome.

It's nice in here!  You wouldn't guess it until you walk in.  There's seating for diners, and a nice long bar for the folks who just want a drink and TV / conversation.  We just came in for dinner.  We ordered the fish and chips.  The moment it came, I was disappointed.

OILY, unseasoned, undrained fish.  Burnt, undrained fries.  There was burnt oil on our plates underneath the food.  I tried a piece and shook my head.  So we asked to get the Shepherd's Pie instead.  Now that's a dish!  Good, not overly salty on the first bite, but it builds pretty well.  I think it'd go well with a side salad, something crunchy and fresh to balance out the rich flavors.  But it's definitely worth coming back for.

The homemade scones they give at the beginning are great.

Service was so-so, only one or two other tables in the joint and I had to get up to ask for water.  But the girl was nice and didn't give us any problems (besides implying we weren't used to beer-battered fish) during our visit.  I should've left a smaller tip now that I think about it.  Oh well...

This is my PLACE! Love love LOVE Cronins. The owner is the best! He always walks around and visits with the customers to make sure they are having a good time. The food is so good, great flavors and HUGE portions. And the variety behind the bar is fantastic. As a whiskey drinker, I like to see some good choices back there and Cronins delivers on that end. They also have a magician/karaoke show every Saturday night (free).

Not only one of the oldest drinking establishments in Queens it's also one of the best. The food is simple home style cooking with hearty portions cooked to perfection. You will be taking a doggy bag realize that now. Service is great. Dave the Bartender is very funny and freindly and is also a Magician. Just say, "C & P Abracadabra" and you'll C what I mean.

Richie is a riot. He looked good in Drag on Halloween. Wow what a place. It's even better now since the renovations. Two Dart Teams and they welcome new team members.

Since I am an Irish native, I am always skeptical of places that have place-mats with a picture of the country on them and have an Irish menu as it can be very hit and miss as to what is the American-Irish stereotypical food and what you actually get in Ireland.
This place doesn't disappoint. Anywhere I see bangers and mash on a menu I have to have them (aahhh the taste of home..) and these were deliciousness! And the waitress brought extra gravy. NomNomNom..
    Tasted -"Just like mee Mams!"
The atmosphere was nice and relaxed and the place was lovely. In fact the front facade is very misleading as its a little run-down looking. I would have never went in only for a friend was with me who had been before.

One of my favorite places in Astoria. Great people and great food and drinks. It's an Irish pub plain and simple. Reasonable priced food and drink. You can catch a game anytime or enjoy karaoke on a Saturday night. Dave the bartender is the best. Friendly and always quick with a joke and a magic trick. Richie, Katrina and the waitresses are also great and friendly. I come here once a week at least.

The first time I ever went here a couple friends and I stopped in for a drink.  The bartender, Dave, was super friendly and did some magic tricks for us.  We went in about a week later and he remembered all three of our names.  May not seem like much, but that's pretty impressive, especially around here.  Since then we've gone here regularly.

The food is generally what you'd expect from an Irish pub.  I've been pleased with everything I've ordered and the portions are always massive.  The bartenders (Dave and Richie especially) and owner are awesome and always make sure you're having a good time.  There are plenty of TVs, and I've always found them to be very accommodating about turning a TV to a particular sporting event, even if it's on some obscure channel and you're the only one who wants to watch it.

My only knock on this place is that the service can be hit or miss.  There are a few servers who have been around for years and they are great, but there seems to be a rotation of newer servers (some who seem to only last for a short time), many of whom can I've found a bit disappointing.

Probably my favorite spot in Astoria.  I can say that when I come here for a night out, I always have a great time.

I love this place. The food is great and they also have a good section of beer. Never too crowded or have waited too long to be seated. Also a great place to watch sports!

Went in for a beer after the movies. Bartender was incredibly rude to an older woman at the bar who wanted to order food ... I am sure she is a regular nuisance, but he didn't have to work her up into a frenzy. Class it up Irish bartender guy.

Came here last night after a movie date for dinner. The boy said he had been here before and really enjoyed the food. I'm always up for newness (especially in the borough I now call home and with company that I fancy) and so we came here for dinner. He had Coors draft with their bangers & mash platter and I had Sam Adams Oktoberfest with a cheeseburger deluxe. He was happy with his bangers and mashed potatoes, I tried his beans and I wasn't impressed...I thought they were quite bland (mind you I'm Latin and I make freakin' awesome rice and beans...also I've never consumed just beans, there's always been rice...this to me is simply foreign and odd, but I understand the culture difference but I still like my beans seasoned and more flavorful), still the bangers and mashed potatoes looked good.

I ordered my cheeseburger medium rare and was disappointed with it came out kind of medium-well. The meat was good, just drier than I prefer and not pink...like I also prefer. The fries were fantastic, crunchy but with a good "potato to fried" ratio. They provided us with A1 steak sauce, ketchup, mayo (which I mixed to create yummy pink sauce!) and malt vinegar. I fookin' love malt vinegar, anything vinegar is my ISH.

This bar looks like your standard Irish pub and had well placed TVs for prime sports viewing. It wasn't very loud (although it was like 10pm-ish when we arrived) or crowded which was great for conversation purposes. The waitress was nice, efficient and the food didn't take too long to come out (which is great cuz I was staaaarvin'!). I liked this bar - I'd totally be open to coming back and trying some of the other stuff on their menu (maybe brunch one day!), especially the stuffed potato skins on their app menu - that certainly caught my eye.

This place is great! Everyone's so welcoming and friendly here, staff and customers alike. I went in to watch the Euro Cup 2012 final, and it wasn't overly crowded and rowdy. The bartenders and this friendly old man took their time to make a small talk and ask if I needed anything else.

The bar area is really long and spacious with extra chairs. Across the divider is a cozy seating area with lots of tables to accommodate groups of various sizes. I saw a couple babies and kids, so I guess it's kid-friendly. The TVs were all around the entire place, even in the garden.

Good beer selection, nice atmosphere, apparently delicious food, so why not?

Update: I really do love this place. It is a gem, it is great food, it is irish, it is everything wonderful. BUT. What has been going on with the SERVICE lately? The waitresses have been grouchy and mean, ignore us and do not return to check in or get refills. We probably go 1x a month, so not weekly regulars, but I'd say good supporters....but why such cranky pants lately?

Very nice Neighborhood Bar with the BEST TV placement for viewing sports.

Cronin & Phelan's is an awesome place to have a drink, meet friends or watch some sports. The Bar is on the right as you walk in with 20 plus seats. It is very roomy and comfortable. It has a six foot high divider in the middle of the room that separates the bar from the main dining area with a dozen tables and waitress service.

What makes this place a gem, are the placement of TVs. They have about 8 or so 42 inch TVs along the length of the wall on the back bar. They are all align perfectly with excellent eye placement. You then have 3 larger TVs at each end of the space. Basically you can sit or stand anywhere at C & P and catch a great view of any of the games. Their not a bad view or spot in the place.

Bartender service is friendly and efficient. The place has a large regular clientele and you will find someone always willing to talk sports. I have only had soup here, but they seem to serve some good "comfort food". Its your basic meat and potatoes place which isn't bad when your watching a game on TV.

Overall, if you want to catch a game Cronin & Phelan's is as good as it gets. They seem to have all the sports packages and with so many TVs you can always find your favorite team or sport. I seem to order a Bud Draft for $2.25, but they do have a large selections of beer and liquor. You certainly will not go thirsty here.

When I was pregnant I didn't have any crazy cravings. I never sent hubby out at 2am for a pint of mint chocolate covered pickles with a side of sour cream and onion pancakes...but oh how I craved the French onion soup at this awesome Irish pub. So a few times a month you would see me wobbling into this seedy looking bar ( seedy looking from the outside ). I'm sure some people saw me and thought about calling ASC, but no, the food here is better than any cocktail ( to a preggo, at least ). Everything we've ever had here was excellent, shepard's pie is divine, burgers are always delish, open faced turkey sandwich rivals the best thanksgiving meal I've ever had. I can't speak for the drinks, but the food is phenomenal, the waitresses are super sweet and the owner Mike is so cute I just wanna hug him.

Was in the neighborhood and went with my hubby. Heard great things about this neighborhood establishment, great food, great service. It's just a Irish pub with a bar and table seating and even a party room in the back. The owner of the bar is super nice and made sure everything was good. Food was delicious, I recommend the fried ravioli's-those were my favorite!

Amazing, cozy Irish pub with great food and beer selection. I've tried almost everything on this menu! The specials are reasonably priced and always changed up. From traditional Irish dishes (the best Shepard's Pie known to man!) to American (burgers, steaks, etc), this place is wonderful. The dishes just have that "homemade" vibe that I like. The waitresses and bartenders are also very polite and I have never waited longer than 10 minutes to be seated here.

Suggestions... Definitely the Shepard's pie, the burgers, shell steak, chicken sandwiches... it's all good here, trust me. I've been here too many times to count! Every time is better than the last.

What fun departure from the upscale Manhattan scene! I really like this place, It's American-Irish pub charm was prevalent the minute I walked through the door. There was music and rustic wood. I asked the manager/bartender (who was Irish) for a beer list and he looked at me like I was crazy! LOL Guess I came off as an amateur but I loved the attitude.

I attended a b-day party, so we had the entire room in the back to ourselves. It was brick and large with lots of room to circulate and keep the party contained. At the end of the night, I was delighted to learn that the same manager who I met when I came in also moonlighted as a magician. He took the birthday book and staged a series of really funny and clever tricks using the b-day boy as the guinea pig. He had a captive audience (by this time, we were moved out to the general area) and he used playing cards, a ventriloquist mask, and a straight jacket for all his tricks. It's something I really can't explain; you have to see it yourself. So, get out there! This is not your ordinary pub.

People better than the booze, but they are open late which is great when you work late.

Lots of TVs - at least one will show soccer.

    Staff are excellent
Being from Ireland, I can safely say, this is the best, most genuine Irish Food in Astoria. The staff are excellent, and seem to never forget a face. '

Irish Breakfast are the best I've had in a long time.

Off the dinner menu, I've had the liver which was OMG.. Delicious.
I've also had the cabbage and bacon, just like home....
and the steak, well, while it wasn't bad, it was my least favorite.
I've also had burgers from here, and they're tasty.

If your in the hood, you should try this place :)

Been here a few times and the most recent was last Saturday after my friend Anthony F. and I decided, in an entirely sane manner, to run NYRR's 4M race + another 4 miles (in order to complete our 8 mile training run for the Brooklyn Half) in the torrential downpour that was New York City last Saturday. In order to recover, we opted for the following: hot coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Dunkin, Swedish meatballs at Ikea, and dinner at Cronin & Phelan's (notice how everything revolves around food with us?).

I think I've had breakfast here before, and this time I opted for a simple old cheeseburger with fries. When it came out I swear the circumference was either close or equal to that of a small frisbee. It was tasty, but it could've been seasoned a little better as it would've tasted kind of blah without the cheddar on it. Coupled with a Smithwicks, this made for a perfect meal after this kind of day.

The atmosphere in here is great and the servers are all really, really nice. You can easily relax in here and not worry about high-strung managers or busboys trying to rush you through your meal so they can sit the next table. Overall, I like it here.

Let me say that the food tasted good going in. But then it took up residence in my stomach and sat there for hours.

Maybe it was due to my flu, which was on the back end, and maybe i will give this place another chance.

But my gut feeling (ba-dum-dum) is that this place is good and greasy. Tastes good but you take your chances.

I have been here twice and I have to say it's a great Irish pub.  The service is good and very friendly.  The inside is old school pub style but it is brightly lit and has a more then decent amount of tv monitors at the bar. There is a divided seating area where you can enjoy some delicious food and there is even  addition seating in the back.

On to the food.  All the traditional Irish dishes are great here.  Weather you order the shepherds pie which they pipe the potatoes for a nice touch, or  the fish n chips which come with a great beer batter, or the bangers and mash you can't go wrong.  They also have a large amount of specials everyday.  Along with a nice selection of beers on tap you can't ever go wrong with this place!

This is one of my favorite pubs to grab dinner at in Astoria. Staff is friendly and dry humored (win).

I was a huge fan of their roast beef sandwich (covered in mozzarella and on pieces if garlic bread), which was recommended by a friend. Holy hell. And I mean holy hell is that thing enormous and flavorful. I rarely cannot finish a sandwich but this one did me in. Having the rest for lunch the next day it was still delicious even after being microwaved. I also must recommend getting a burger with cheddar and Irish bacon. Damn, Irish bacon... If I could have that every day (and not risk serious health issues) I would. Amazingly done burger, the sharpness of the cheddar worked so well with the bacon to lend flavor favor to that mighty burger.

Other than that, fries are pretty damn good. Nothing special but they do the trick. They also pour an amazing Guinness. A place that takes special care and pride in their Guinness pour (and keeping a clean tap damnit!) earns extra points in my book. Add on the reasonable prices and you cannot go wrong.

You rule Cronin & Phelan's, you rule a lot.

This bar is criminally overlit. There's nothing more offputting than seeing every minor detail of you own mug as you swill Jack Daniels from a highball glass.

Aside from that, there's hardly anyone in CnP's, ever, unless you count a 75lb geriatric barfly as a "person," which I personally don't.

I consider this to be a standard Irish pub because the waitress has an accent and the level of hygeine is questionable. That said, one of my favorite local pubs.

We typically stick to drinking Magners when we visit, but ALWAYS order dinner. The bangers are perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. I hear the french onion soup is the stuff of legend.

Cronin never gets incredibly busy, but it's a great low-key environment for a group of friends to grab a few pints.

My boyfriend and I stopped in for burgers last night. The weather was gorgeous, so we opted for the "garden." Although it's not exactly picturesque, it was nice to be outside.

We both had burgers...and we are still full. The patties are thick - maybe more than an inch. They will put you in a protein coma.  Delicious, but very filling.

    Twas a late Wednesday night
    I was craving a pint
So I dropped into ol' C&P!
    Then... car bombs and gin
Made for a night full of win...
I'm sure all my friends would agree.

It was a quarter past one
    I was thoroughly done
    Inebriation had been achieved.
    I paid my bill
Since I had drank my fill
And headed home to take 12 Aleve.

    So, would I go back?
    You bet your ass, Jack.
Drinks were strong and the service top notch.
    With Dave at the bar,
    A beverage was never far,
So go there and enjoy a good scotch!

The food here will put you to sleep from overeating (cause it's great).  I had their special Pork chop plate loaded with vegetables, gravy and mashed potatoes.  (I'm getting hungry thinking of it).  I had also tried their their Irish grill, which is sort of a sampler of all their grilled meats.  Good stuff.
True Irish pub where your 3rd is a buyback.   Atmosphere is family'ish but it's cool to just sit there and nurse your pint.  This place is truly 'come as you are' and not 'what you wear'!

This may be one of the neighborhood's best kept secrets.

I consider myself an aficionado of the Astoria restaurant scene, and my visit here over the weekend really surprised me.  If you like authentic British/Irish pub food, I don't think it gets any better than this.

My first visit was Saturday night, where I had the Irish mixed grill and my bf had the Shepherd's Pie.  The friendly waitress started us out with the most delicious Irish soda bread rolls, and from that moment on I was sold.  I have not had soda bread like that since my Irish grandmother passed away 10 years ago. I learned later that Cronin's bakes them fresh on site, so that alone sets this place apart from your run of the mill pub.

As much as I love British food (and I truly do!), I usually go for fish and chips rather than the potentially iffy greasy meat products served at most pubs.  I am so glad I didn't here- the flavor of the meats on my mixed grill plate were fantastic!  The Irish sausage was a particular standout- so delicately flavored and tender. The Shepherd's Pie was great as well (huge portion!), as well as the authentic Irish beans (in tomato sauce of course).

I have never been to the same restaurant twice within 24 hours, but somehow I found myself back there the next afternoon.  It was the soda bread...I just couldn't get that taste out of my mind.  And it was just as good the next day!  This time I had the bangers and mash, which were generously portioned at only $8.50.  My bf had the roast beef sandwich, and the roast beef was the best I have ever tasted.  It was perfectly cooked- tender and just the right color pink.  Not to mention the fact that it was HUGE!

Aside from the delicious food, the staff at Cronin's shows a commitment to good service.  On my second visit I ordered a Guinness from one of the three rotating servers.  Before I had a chance to take my first sip, one of the other servers happened by and picked it right back up again.  Apparently she was displeased with the pour and wanted to make sure I was getting my money's worth by letting it settle and refilling it.

They really believe in the true pub experience there, and I can't wait for my next visit!

Definitely one of my favorite local Irish pubs! The food is GREAT!! Especially the shepard's pie! The waitresses (all Irish) are extremely friendly and well, awesome. They have an outdoor patio in back which is really amazing during summer!
I will say the one negative thing I have ever experienced here was the butter. The kind that come in little packets? It could have just been me but it tasted slightly expired. No one else seemed to find it wrong, so could have just been my taste buds being stupid. Other than that I love this place! Great for a Sunday brunch!

Cronin's is my home Irish dart bar and I'm proud to say it! It's great atmosphere is filled by locals and new comers alike making it a whole lot of fun whether you're here for drinks, food, or both!

Having just been renovated, you have big screens to watch all your favorite sports on while sipping back a Guinness and joking around with Dave the Magician-Bartender! Be sure to ask for a trick or two when you come in, but don't forget to tip for the entertainment!!

The friendly atmosphere is overflowing here and when they know you're having a good time buy backs are not uncommon!  Be sure you bring your darts or appetite because both will be challenged upon entering!  I recommend the Shepard's Pie but I've had all kinds of dishes here and even their curried chicken was amazing!

What a great place to have in Astoria. It's cozy and feels like the perfect place to hide out on a cold night. Alas, we nursed our beers for at least a half hour to get a table last night. Apparently people like the place so much they don't leave!! But the bartender and waitresses were all so sweet and apologetic about it that it wasn't a big deal, and once we sat down the service was amazingly fast.

We ordered the shepherd's pie and fish 'n chips. They came in mammoth portions. I really liked both dishes but the fish was a little mushy.

This pub is fantabulous...Great food at reasonable prices and they give you your money's worth. I've had the Shepherd's pie on numerous occasions, the fresh ham is very tasty and even something simple as a burger, you could never go wrong.

Dave the bartender is not just a bartender, he is also a skilled magician.  He will entertain you with card tricks, while you have a drink at the bar.

Don't expect an extensive beer list, but they do have Brooklyn Lager on tap, along with Guinness, Bass, and the usual other beers like Budweiser, Coors Light, etc.

Cronin's also has entertainment....Karaoke, Open mic nights, Halloween parties, Toys for Tots benefits around the holidays, etc.

This pub has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember and it's a place that you keep going back to.

You would pass the place and never think about going in, but once you do get passed the death trap doors your tummy will thank you.
I have tried everything there and its terrific, I especially love there 16 oz. Steaks, and they make it perfectly. Nice thick, seared, and very juicy, love it medium rare. But if you like it well done, don't order it.....actually, people that eat steaks well done, should not eat steaks at all. :P
As someone else mentioned, those turnips rule, I ask for it all the time but some days they don't have it. Since the days are getting colder, I'll be there soon for some sheppards pie.  This has been our  secret get together place for many years now,  but we fear the secrets out of the bag 'cause its been a little harder finding seats some nights.
Oh, and the pricing is great. Like the steak I love so much..like, $16-17 bucks with mash and veggies on the side.

It's dark, a little dirty, sometimes a little musty, but oh my god the shephard's pie is soooooo good.
There is nothing better after a long days work than walking into the cozy confines of a fine Irish pub, ordering a pint and a burger and forgetting about the world outside.  You can also leave those cozy confines for a spell and enjoy the outside garden if fresh air is more your speed.  But whatever your poison, make sure that you try at least one of their pub dishes.  They're all you expect and more.

Recommendations: Shephard's Pie; Onion Rings; Fish and Chips
