I really wanted to like Daddy Cool's - I'm always down for a good burger, and who doesn't love a good milkshake.
Unfortunately, while the staff at Daddy Cool's was really nice, I thought the food was just average. Â I wasn't expecting Kuma's or Bad Apple or anything, but it was just, as the rating suggests, meh. Â
The place itself is nice - kind of kitschy and fun - but it couldn't make up for the lackluster food. Â I hope they work it out - I'd love to have delicious burgers nearby.
The Dude and I took a rare Monday night trip into the city to see the Nightwish show at the Congress Theater. I hadn't had a bite to eat since lunch and was famished. I needed sustenance, and fast - and lo and behold, like a beacon of light from above, there stood Daddy Cool's.
I entered and gazed at the menu board in wonder. Now, I know this is Chicago and one can't fling a dead cat without hitting a hot dog stand, but this place has a serious selection of hot dog toppings. I was a bit overwhelmed and just went with the classic Chicago dog. It didn't disappoint. The toppings were fresh and snappy and I scarfed the whole thing down. In retrospect, I wish I had chosen a more adventurous dog, but we were in a hurry to get to the show and I just couldn't make up my mind on any of the other tantalizing options.
I also noted that Daddy Cool's has veggie dogs for the non-meat-eating folk (like the Dude). Bonus points! Also worth loving: the low, low prices!
The decor is adorable inside, as well. It's got a fun, kitschy, retro vibe going on.
Stay cool., Daddy Cool's!
I really wanted to like this place... its close the house, logan needs a quality Hot dog stand but this is not that.
The chili was pretty good but the hot dog was cold, seriously. Â
i was excited for the crinkle fries but they over cooked them... mind you i was the ONLY person in the place.
I didn't love the menu and the staff was not very knowledgeable nor were they interested in helping  wont be back - sorry
Stopped by for a dog, a burger  and some onion rings. I was super hungry, ok? While nothing mind blowing, I'm going to guess that most everything comes into the kitchen from a Cisco truck. Boring crinkle cut fries, frozen  battered onion rings.  Nothing against the folks that run this place, but if you're going to be in the hood of Kuma's Corner and Hot Doug's, you best step up your burger and dog game.
To be fair, I didn't try any of their special dogs. There are a few to choose from, but I figured a Chicago dog should be a baseline. If you fuck that up, well then... forget it. The relish wasn't quite right, either. It was like getting a Chicago dog in Minneapolis or somewhere else... same ingredients and idea., but just off the mark.
So, not terrible but if they tried a little harder to make some stuff in house, and make their ingredients fresher, they might get a higher rating.
It's like Coolsville, Daddy-O.
I stumbled into this place after a street festival one night and was immediately blown away by its rock n' roll decor - they have a poster from James Brown's 1994 "I Feel Good Again" concert in Pittsburgh in 1994 -, great food and friendly service. They even have those retro coca-cola coolers for their bottled drinks, a nice touch with the rest of the skateboards and other stuff nailed to the walls. This is what every TGI Friday's is trying to look like.
I consider myself a connoisseur of Chicago hot dogs. I've been eating them at just about every Vienna Beef hot dog stand in the city since 2001 so this is not my first rodeo. These guys KNOW how to make a good hot dog. The char is just right, not too undercooked in the middle and the perfect amount of carbon on the outside.
The variety at Daddy Cool's is, dare I say it, right up there with Hot Doug's. Sure, Doug's has a bigger menu with more variation, but DC's signature dogs such as the Southern (coleslaw, chili and mustard) and the Clevelander (BBQ sauce and coleslaw topped with fries in the sandwich) are all tasty, well-thought-out dog meals in their own right. This is the foundation that a future Hot Doug's is built on. Try the Sonora (bacon, shredded cabbage, chihuahua cheese, avocado, pico de gallo and chipotle mayo) for an excellent south of the border taste. It will take a little while for DC's hot dog artists to prepare these but it's totally worth the wait.
I look forward to watching this excellent business grow in my community.
Daddy Cool's has the making of a great little eatery. The staff is fabulous, the place has a cool retro vibe that I really enjoyed, but the food was Blah!! The Hot Dogs were the same thing you could find at any local Hot dog stand. They are creative with the toppings, but the Wow factor is lacking. The Dogs at Daddy Cool's cost more than your typical Hot Dog shack and to be honest, they really weren't worth it.
I really liked the interior. The walls were filled with an eclectic mix of Pin-up Girls, sports memorabilia and concert posters. It reminded me of my Man-cave. The guys working the counter were really nice. They were quite helpful when we were trying to sort through the different menu selections. Everything was great until the food came out. My dog selections were all carefully considered. Here is the breakdown.
Southern Dog: (Three stars). Came with Chili, coleslaw and mustard.
Sonora Dog: (Blah!!), Bacon, cheese and avocado.
Texas Chili Cheese: (A mess), Beef Chili, crushed Frito's and Cheddar cheese.
The dogs were all decent, the ingredients were fresh, but I kept thinking that I could make a better dog for myself at home. The kicker was my wife's burger. I can't remember which one she ordered, but it was quarter sized. Quite small. It didn't even fit half the bun. The burger was also dry. I was wise to order the hot dogs. The burger was a total dud.
Here's the bottom line: I enjoyed my visit to Daddy Cool's. The staff, decor and vibe were all fun and welcoming. It's the food that was a bit disappointing. If my friends in the area tell me they made some changes and stepped things up a bit, I would gladly go back. But until then, Sayonara.
My boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try since we walked by one night and noticed they offered veggie dogs! As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to see this. Â I ordered a veggie dog and cheese fries. Â Unfortunately I wasn't as impressed with the food, but the strawberry shake was delicious!
Overall the fries and veggie dog were pretty bland - the strawberry shake was the highlight of the meal.
Tried Daddy Cools and unfortunately the highlight of the meal was the fries. They were very crispy kind of like out hot dog buns that were clearly on the stale side. The francheesy dog was good but the Chicago style was bad. Also I thought that it was a little pricey considering it was just hot dogs and fries.
At least hey have a good starting point which are the fries. Hopefully they can build from there because someone definitely invested some money in this restaurant.
this place is pretty standard. Â unfortunately the burgers are really bland. Â i had the "cowboy"-grilled onions, bbq, cheddar & bacon. Â made it a double. Â it would have been smarter to keep it a single. Â the patty has no flavor so two just made that fact worse. Â the dogs are standard, chocolate malt also standard-with plenty of fake whip cream on top. Â will i return?
no.
I went here after a hard morning of scouring yard sales and it turned out to be a good choice.
First of all, the menu prices top out at $4.99.
Secondly, the hours are pretty good and close to local drinking holes.
Thirdly, the Chicago dog is pretty tasty.
Other things I liked:
- The decor, which reminded me of a dearly departed road side diner near where I used to live in Texas.
- Outdoor seating!
- The chili cheese fries, even though they are most likely conducive to having a heart attack.
The one thing I was a bit disappointed in though was the chocolate shake. I think it was just the chocolate sauce they use. I'd probably try a vanilla shake before writing them off completely. Pro tip- ask for it without the fake whipped cream and "cherry".
We went here this weekend to get a cheap dinner and had heard good things about this place. I had the Sonora hot dog and my friend had a cheeseburger, and we shared fries and onion rings. Â The hot dog was delicious, with bacon, chipotle mayo, cabbage, chihuahua cheese, avocado, and pico de gallo. A lot of toppings = a lot of flavor, and I totally recommend this one; it's unique. The burger was pretty tasty but nothing out-of-this-world (but he also just had it plain, so, you know), and the fries/onion rings were decent.
I'll most likely go back; it's pretty inexpensive (both of our meals were less than $6 each), close to my house, and the food was really good.
Hopefully this place will do well.
Pretty a-ok. This place sure took a long time to open up, but everything looks brand new and has a good feel to it. The prices are very reasonable and it's open late... Definitely it's two best qualities and they're important ones. Â I got the New Yorker dog and they forgot my sauerkraut but were nice about it. I'll be back!
Review Source:This place is a ok in my book. Delicious dogs, cool atmosphere. Still working out the kinks. First time I went there I called in my order, didn't start making it until I got there. Menu said they had shakes, but they wouldn't make one for me. Second time, they say that they open at 11 but didn't open till 1130 and we where in serious needs of some dogs! So we walked over they let us in and were more than nice. We had the New Yorker, Seattle Dog and some chile fries. Excellent
Review Source:Tiny everything. It tastes ok. But, if I'm going to pay almost $5 for a burger and $3 for a large mac and cheese, it had better be a decent size. Seriously, ask them how big their sizes are and then laugh, and then turn around and walk out while you're still laughing. Oh yeah, get your money back if you can, too.
Review Source:Great burger place. Got the avocado burger and excellent pico. My friend got the blue cheese burger, which was also le tasty. I'm definitely gonna have to work my way down their menu because they all sound tasty and are quite inexpensive. They apparently also have wifi, which I guess is a perk? Nothing like some Cute Overload with your burger, eh?
Review Source:I hope this place sticks around. We checked out the newly opened Daddy Cool's this past Saturday evening. There was a small crowd, which was heartening. There's a wide array of hamburgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, and other items of that ilk. We got an obscene amount of food for 3 people for less than $20, which is also a plus. I had the Sonora dog which was really good. Nothing super spectacular or unique about it, but it was tasty and I will definitely be back. The atmosphere here is really fun too. Definitely check it out!
