Worse than what I remember and that wasn't great. Â Don't let it touch your lips unless it's boiled or popped out scalding hot from a deep fryer. Â If you eat the greens or order runny eggs, write your will, then call the undertaker and mutter your prayers. Â Or, just go blind drunk and so hungry that danger registers dimly enough to ignore.
Review Source:I love this place! Â My boyfriend and I come here on a regular basis. Â I always get the California Skillet (two eggs over medium, Monteray jack cheese, hash browns, avocado, with a side of pancakes) and he always get a Turkey Club. Â The skillet is delicious as is the club sandwich. Â We have had the onion rings (yum), pancakes (my favorite), cinnamon raisin french toast (not worth it), biscuits and gravy (average). The servers for the most part are fantastic and friendly. Â On weekends the food does take a little longer to get to the tables as the restaurant tends to be a bit busier. Â The only down point is the bathrooms (small, not clean).
Review Source:Hand cut cheese sticks!!!! Â That is all that I can strongly recommend here. Â Everything else seems to be standard diner fare. Â We got the Starving Student Sampler, and it included chicken strips, steak fries and one hand cut cheese stick. Â The chicken was dry and a bit chewy, the fries were unexceptional, but the cheese sticks, Oh My Lord... they are perfectly crisped on the outside and composed of pillow-y soft cheese on the inside. Â The cheese was not so gooey that you couldn't take a bite out of it, but it very soft and just... cheesy. Â
We didn't get from the menu that only one stick comes with the sampler, so they were nice enough to gift us with a second cheese stick. Â If we are craving late night food, we will return and just order cheese sticks.
Otherwise, it appears to be what you would expect of a late-night diner. Â They have a long menu with lots of diner favorites and different sandwiches and snacks. Â They are open 24 hours and it's a great hang out for students and folks craving junk food after a party.
After hitting the bars, a few of us were hungry. Â
Since we were in the area, we decided to stop here. Â
Just like any other greasy spoon, it served the purpose... Soaking up liquor with grease..
Late night breakfast after drinking is great. Â Definitely had less of a hang-over after eating my meal.
If in the area, after drinking, and it is late, I would go back...
Like other people have mentioned, I don't know why people are giving this place such bad reviews. I've ordered delivery probably 5 times from them now and every time the food was delivered relatively quickly (and I live far away), hot and delicious.
The menu is HUGE. Prices are very fair for the amount of food you get. I love their BLT with amazing steak fries, the messy nachos are terribly bad for you and terribly delicious.
Really, everything I've tried has been above average quality. Give this place a shot.
YUCK! Â Who starts a review that way? Â I do, after eating here. Â I walked in and the place was empty-ish. Â It's a fairly big space so if only one other table is occupied, that's noticeable. Â I'm not superstitious so I figured, it's the day after New Years and people are eating leftovers or something except me because I'm the quintessential non-cooking bachelor. Â Whatever. Â I'm giving the place two stars because I'm trying to think about this wholistically--my food was HORRIBLE but the waitress was beyond pleasant and I had a decent milkshake. Â I ordered a chicken burrito and I felt like I was Gordon Ramsay in an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Â Burritos are hard to mess up in my opinion and fairly easy to execute with a few fresh ingredients. Â The chicken was breaded and bland, probably the same chicken breast used for sandwiches. Â If it tasted like anything, that might have been an inventive twist for a burrito under different circumstances. Â The refried beans were also bland and tasted like they were "fresh" from the can (pun intended)...that's been sitting in your cupboard for ages and bordering on the expiration date. Â Good luck. Â No cheese inside but they were thoughtful (or thought-less) enough to put two slices of cheddar cheese on top of the burrito and melt it for me...awww, thanks! Â The dish came with a side of sour cream, hot green salsa and a lettuce and tomato garnish. Â Again, some how these ingredients didn't make it inside the burrito. Â Again, it was too thoughtless to be an attempt at a deconstructed anything. Â Maybe they're better at other things but I can't say I'm willing to give this place another shot. Â I'll let you YELP it thank you very much.
Review Source:I don't understand why people are ragging on this place so much. It's really not that bad. The selection is fantastic and the portions are more than reasonable. I have never been to the actual location, I have only placed delivery orders from here and it has never been a hassle.
People ragging on this place are expecting too much as if it was a place for fine dining and served 3 courses of the most elegant cuisine. Get the fuck out of here. It is what it is, a diner and that's the type of food you're going to get. People writing reviews on here are eating eggs while drinking a beer and then ordering a piece of pie. How can you review a restaurant when you combine consumable items like that? I know it has nothing to do with the establishment itself but that is possibly the worst combination of edible items ever combined. Sorry the food YOU chose to eat together, should NEVER be eaten together and your experience sucked. That's your fault. Just because this place has a lot to offer, it doesn't mean it sucks. Be reasonable with what you order. Yeah, you can order beer & eggs from the same menu but don't be an idiot.
Anyways, back to it. The sandwiches are big, the fries are good (both steak and waffle), and if you get the cheese sauce it doesn't taste like all the generic liquid cheddar sauces. It's richer. Many places do not include fries with their sandwiches so having Deluxe Diner do so is a major plus. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich recently and it wasn't that bad. The sauce could be better, much better, but the chicken itself wasn't dry and it came with lettuce, onion, and tomato. Many other places will charge you for that. Other than the actual buffalo sauce, I enjoyed the sandwich very much. Take a hint from me, Deluxe Diner, just dip the chicken breast in Frank's Buffalo Sauce after you deep fry it and this sandwich will be out of this world.
All in all, it's not spectacular but it is good for late night ordering. Don't expect the best but don't expect the worst. Give it a shot when your regular spots are closed or for some reason have exploded.
My husband & I often order for delivery when we both work 12+ hours days. The food is decent, but not too memorable. Honestly, the only reason we order from here is because it's open late & has a large menu variety. We only order 12a & later because there's nothing else better open.
I do feel as though the prices are a bit high for the quality of the food. One thing that kind of annoys me is that they advertise their pancakes as coming with maple syrup & instead use "breakfast syrup", which is basically colored high-fructose corn-syrup. Why am I paying maple syrup prices for total garbage? I've since stopped ordering the pancakes & stick to items they can't really "mess up".
Also, unless they've just sent us the wrong pizza every time, their deep dish is a joke. It's barely even 0.25"!
Now I am all for diners, but this may be the most disgusting one I have ever been in. I caution to everyone: do NOT go near the restrooms. I almost lost my lunch trying to just walk into the ladies' room.
I understand that these sort of places don't have 5 star quality food, but the eggs benedict I ordered was practically inedible. I will never understand why people visit this establishment. Ugh!
This place really should get zero stars because it's just a horrible place! Both the service and the food are the worst I've had. The only good thing about this place is the music that they were playing. I came in for breakfast/lunch on Sunday. It took at least 20 minutes after we sat ourselves to get anyone to pay attention to us, but it was for the waiter to say he'll be back, which didn't happen for another 15 minutes. After we ordered, we sat there another 30 minutes before I flagged him down to see when we'd get our food. Another 10 minutes before he came out with runny eggs and a soggy Monte Cristo with onion rings. The food was absolutely inedible! I wished I had the sense to get up and left, but stay and was punished with the worst food I'd had. Be warned, never, ever come here...unless you want to punish someone because that's what the whole experience felt like.
Review Source:I end up here a lot because its open late and nearby. but it's not good by any means. the food is okay I guess but the staff is pretty trashy and often can be heard talking about things they have no business discussing at their workplace, in front of customers, whether they're on break or not. I can't really recommend it for more than what it is.
Review Source:Ok I would give this place 3.5 stars if I could. Went here late on a Thursday, diner is open 24 hours which is great. Our waitress was extremely friendly as well. Got a couple beers, my friend had the veggie wrap which she said was pretty good. I had the egg white omelette with veggies which was actually pretty great and a huge portion. Onion rings however were overcooked. Also, got a free piece of pie with yelp check in and it was pretty terrible. Seems like the food is hit or miss but I can appreciate any place that allows me to have a beer with my eggs at absolutely anytime of day.
Review Source:If i could give it no stars i would.
Went here with some friends...horrible service, had a bbq chcken sandwich that was nasty, fries was nasty, etc. this was probably one of the worst restaurants i have ever been to. trust me, don't ever go to this place...EVER.
P.S.- only positive thing i can say is that they do have big portions, buts that it.
This is a classic Chicago diner. The red and black decor is nice, and they accurately capture the design and ambience of the 1950s diner.
My husband and I are always looking for a good breakfast place, as going out to eat is our usual Saturday (and sometimes Sunday) morning routine. This place is quickly being added to our repertoire. The breakfast food there is great--I'm particularly fond of the french toast (one of my staples). Mind you, my husband and I have both been eating at Chicago diners since 1999. We have a small selection of places that are our regular haunts. So, if this place makes the list, then you know that the food is good.
If you're used to suburban chain place where the waitstaff have 37 pieces of flare, you might not like it, but if you want a good diner with good food, this is the place to go.
"Deluxe" Diner? Â How about "Cheapo" Diner?
Memo to management: Â When someone orders a sandwich, don't just plop it onto a waxed sheet in a plastic basket. Â It would be so simple (and not expensive for you) to schmaltz it up a bit with a little paper container of cole slaw, a few chips, a pickle. Â I felt that you were doing the absolute minimum to fulfill the order.
Got the munchies looking for cheap place to have lunch after enjoying a movie. Their menu is an amalgamation of everything you think a greasy spoon should have: even the Mexican cooking crew!
So, you wonder why your burrito tastes just like your eggs benedict? Yup, it's the paisas in the background. Oh, and the staff needs to cut down on the phone conversations while a customer is sitting next to them. WTF? Maybe I should find out when your break is so I can come in with my bluetooth and have a schizophrenic moment while you stuff onion rings in your mouth?
Sandwiches are a tad overpriced; 9 bucks should get you two sides. Sorry. Food was overall tasty, filling.
Sad indicator of the times or ongoing maintenance: sat at the counter and one out of two benches were removed, just gone. Like O--x--O--x--O. Have we as a country become such incredibly huge, disgusting fat assed stable animals lined up at the trough feeding centers of this ilk?
This place is good for an all night diner, some of the food is pretty greasy, and the mozerella sticks are out of control in size. I had the chicken and waffles and for $8 you can't beat two pieces of white meat and a huge belgian waffle. The prices are decent, food is decent, and the staff are pretty friendly. Can't expect much more out of a 24 hour diner.
Both times I've gotten delivery from here have left something to be desired, but that's usually because the food gets in and is already cold and a little soggy. Unfortunate, certainly, but eating in isn't a bad idea.
So while this spot might not be a 5 star joint, I'm not here for the decor. It's a diner not fine dinning. That being said, it obviously earned its rating by alternate methods.
just to put things in perspective, I'm not someone who tends to order out. That being said this will be my 3rd time getting food from here, I'm putting in my order as we "speak" --and I've gotten the same thing each time. Farmhouse Skillet is where it's at. 1st time I went, my friend got a burger, which was just eh, but hey you can't win em all. My skillet took the cake.
As for the comments on the neighborhood, I live down the block, so trash talkers can shove it. There may not be 20 restaurants in a 2 block radius but I definitely have dining options, even more if I choose to hike it over to Sheridan a few blocks down.
If you're in the neighborhood, give this place a try. U might not be disappointed.
I came here on the recommendation of a friend. She said the mozzarella sticks were huge, and I just wanted to see for myself. The mozzarella sticks were pretty huge and filling. And pretty good.
I think I made a mistake ordering fried chicken there though. I've been missing Southern food a lot lately and thought to order the chicken there. Eh. It was good, but it didn't meet my expectations. Their side dishes were also a little bland.
I'd come back here and try other stuff. They have a pretty extensive menu, so I think there are tons of ways to make up for the non-Southern style fried chicken.
They have a lot of breakfast options, so I think I'd come back to try those out.
I really wanted to like this place, but I just can't.
We ordered off of GrubHub and food came promptly... That's why it gets 2 stars.
The food was pretty ok. My wife had a burger and fries and she couldn't finish either. Not because the portions were so huge, but because the quality was minimal. My wife is one to finish her fries too
I had a steak burrito and it was alright. Nothing spectacular, but serviceable. We won't be ordering from here again. There are plenty of better greasy spoon options out there.
I really wanted to give this place 5 stars. But I can't. I decided to finally try it since living in this pit of a neighborhood for over a year. Planning to move soon - so thought I'd give it a try. I needed some soulful diner food after being led astray by a landlord (how improbable) -- waiting for a showing on an apt advertised that not only doesn't exist, but when they didn't show up for the "open house" they advertised, they weren't even polite about it. They just said "Oh, I'll send someone over."
After I determined that what they did have was not what was in the ad -- actually, hundreds more, I left. On the way back to the apt I will soon be leaving (that is, if I could find an honest landlord that tells the truth about what they are offering) - I stopped in at Deluxe Diner -- because guess what? This neighborhood is so shitty that the only place you can even get food at all -- is this diner and a bar across the street. Â
But I digress. Sorry, I need to vent. In any case, this will give you a perspective on this diner and you'll know why it is so popular because there ISN'T anything else here. If you're in a car, fine. You can get over the adjacent Andersonville to find something. Quaint little restaurants. A subway. Not this dumpy neighborhood.
Okay. So on with business. They are very attentive when you arrive - the waitress was cheery. She too my order right away. I know this is not fast food and will take longer. That's fine. What is NOT fine is leaving my food set on the counter while you take people's money. People who have already eaten, while my food gets cold. Common sense says that food to go needs to be dealt with fast. I was lucky that food was even lukewarm when I walked just 2 blocks home.
The burger was great. So large that I cut it in half. Plenty of condiments. Fresh lettuce, pickle, onion. Â The onion rings were mushy. Not cool.
I'd go again, but I hope to be out of this vicinity before I ever get the urge.
Ok you guys. I have been coming here since it was called stacks & steaks. I have been going here longer than I have been able to shave. I have been here and witnessed homeless men eat cigarette butts & the waitress treats them the same as the yuppie in a northface windbreaker http://qkme.me/35u6ea.
I love this place. There was one homeless guy who used to come in here that we nicknamed "The quarterback" cuz he would intermittently yell out, "HUT HUT! " and then spike a coffee mug on the floor.
When you are a teenager, this is one of the few places we could go into at midnight, smoke cigarettes and not get harassed. Remember when you could smoke in restaurants? Man, that was awesome. This place was made to be smoked in.
But I digress, the food is good. And here is a shocking reality, when you order food for delivery, and live further away than say a block, the food may not be as fresh as if it comes straight from the chef to your plate. I don't understand why this place delivers, my guess is to make money, which shocks me. I thought they were in it for the love of the game.
This is a diner people, they serve diner food. A 24 HOUR DINER. Not a fancy place where you get creme brulee and a goat empanada, come here drunk and hungry at 2am, leave full and less drunk at 3am. I believe I have had everything on the menu at least once, and I would do the following:
Don't get a salad. But do get a milkshake, fries and a burger. You look great, your body can handle it.
Here is a fun Friday night plan: Go see too much light makes the baby go blind down the street, or go to the Raven theater, get drunk in Andersonville and hit on lesbians, then stumble over to Stacks & Steaks, I mean the Deluxe Diner, and order something. Now walk down Devon ave, where if you can't hail a cab, you must be a moron, because everyone on Devon ave is Indian and owns a cab, even the guys running the restaurants.
My wife and i were looking for some diner food. We were growing weary of going to the same old diner spots and decided to give this place a whirl. I am glad we decided to take a little drive up here as we were very pleased with our experience.
It was very clean and decorated just as a diner should. Our server did an OK job. She was very friendly but the only complaint that I had was that her mind seemed to be elsewhere. Since there were only three other tables occupied when we went here, it did not seem all that bad. She forgot our cornbread and seemed to dissappear for LONG stretches at a time.
I ordered the chopped steak off of the dinner specials menu and it was solid. It came with two sides and I had cornbread with it. I had onion rings which were also very good and chicken soup. the chicken soup was VERY tasty! It was not as smoking hot as I normally like my soup, but it was so good that I could forgive a little drop in the temperature. For dessert we split a piece of aple pie and a scoop of vinilla ice cream which was also very good!.
I am looking forward to our next visit where I can try some more stuff!
The food has never been great, but I've let that pass for the most part since its the only place still open as I stumbler home from the 4am bars. Â What really got my goat tonight was waiting 15 minutes after I was finished eating - if not longer - just to find the server was hiding in a corner playing on the internet. Â I'm sorry butt there's just no excuse for that.
Bad food. Â Bad service. Â No eats.
I'm sad I've given this place as many chances as I have. Â Never again.
I admit I can be super harsh at times, but 2.5 stars?? Jeesh! Granted, I had my food delivered from here via http://GrubHub.com, but my roommate and I loved it!
I ordered a club sandwich, my roommate ordered a BLT, and we each got onion rings. Hankering for some more comfort food, we got the spinach artichoke dip too. It took about an hour to deliver, but we did order it at about 12am. Late night hunger and no groceries in the house.
The order took about an hour, but it was worth the wait! Obviously the onion rings weren't as great as if we had sat there and ate, but that's to be expected when you get fried food delivered. It just doesn't travel well. The spinach artichoke dip came with pita bread and regular chips. YUM! Overall, we were pleased with the food and will definitely order from here again in the future.
ICK! Â This place sucks. Â My roommate and I ordered from Deluxe Diner tonight, and yeah... gross. Â Here's what we got, and how we felt about it: The veggie burger- boring and bland, but it actually was the best of the bunch; the mini-burgers- tasteless and soggy; steak fried- BAD! Unsalted, squishy, just plain gross; cheese sticks- super weird! They're like four times thicker than your normal cheese stick, and the breading on them is really thin and squishy... they were disgusting.
So yeah... I definitely don't recommend this place!! Â Gross. Â Plus the delivery guy needed to (as my mom says) lose his 'tude!
The bad and the good:
Bad: We ordered chili-cheese waffle fries, spinach bread, and a banana chocolate shake. The quality of the food was relatively in line with the other reviews (poor). The fries were okay, basically par for a diner like this. They should have cooked them a little longer too. The shake was mixed in a way that made it only slightly cold upon serving, and was pretty lacking in flavor.
The bread was horrible. Low quality bread made very soggy with some sort of tomato sauce. My girlfriend loves spinach but it was horrible. She believed it hasn't been washed, leaving it with a dirty taste and flavor. It was slimy and foul. She was unable to finish it even though she was starving. But that brings me to...
The good: the service was excellent. On a basic level everything was timely, fast drink refills. We complained about the bread and they took it off the bill no questions asked. When we went to pay they gave us the drink and shake for free as well. Not to bad.
Overall, this place has potential. Good atmosphere and service but most of the food is terrible. There's got to be something good on the menu but I'm not going to try and find it.
You know, no one expects this place to be amazing. It is what it is: a cheap, quick, 24 hour greasy spoon.
And while I recognize that it is a bit of a dive, that doesn't excuse the fact that a giant mouse ran past my table tonight. When I went and told a waiter he looked at me with an incredibly bored expression and said "What do you want me to do about it?". Â His point is sort of fair - there wasn't really anything that could be done about it at that moment.
But his disinterest seemed to indicate that nothing would be done probably ever. Â My mouse phobia had me curled up on the bench, praying the check would come, and he sort of hemmed and hawed about how places have mice, it isn't perfect, blah blah blah.
Gross. If you could as effectively get rid of your mice as you got rid of this customer, maybe you'd have more people in your restaurant.
I remember the place when it was Steaks & Stacks. It was grimier- but much better.
The place has gone down hill- even in the past few months. Supposedly they had a relatively recent change in management. They may need another for the daytime: it was all around crappy.
A friend and I headed here for a lunch/breakfast. Â It was labor day- but hey- one would expect that they would be staffed for it. Yeah- wrong. It took over 20 minutes for the server to get to our table. Â It took another 40 minutes for our food to be cooked. When it finally came- the eggs were over done on both dishes, the hash browns the exact OPPOSITE- way undercooked. Bland, tasteless, yuck. No complaints, and not because we are quiet people, but because we never- ever saw our server again.
Yeah- someone else gave us the ticket when we flagged him down.
It took close to two hours from start to finish for this pathetic breakfast. Not what we were looking for.
It was bad enough that I called and talked to the manager on duty- later today (the evening manager). He was pretty cool. He offered to give us a comp meal, and apologized. We talked for a bit; I explained that it not about the comp meal, it was really about the fact that the service and food was both horrible today. I will give them another chance (yeah- I am like that), I doubt I will take them up on the free meal. It would be nice to see this place get it together. Really nice. Who knows?
I had - literally - the worst meal I have ever been served, served to me on Saturday at Deluxe Diner. Â
My husband and I ordered meatloaf (I know... it seemed like a good idea at the time...), mashed potatoes and salad to split. Â
-The salad came out and each vegetable was seriously old - the carrots were shriveled and brown and the ends were slimy. Â The lettuce was brown, and the celery was flaccid, brown and dried out. Â
-The meatloaf was served with the vegetable of the day which was - literally - the vegetables from a can of vegetable soup drained of it's broth. Â
-And the meatloaf - seemed as if it had been frozen so long that the cell structure had deteriorated leaving a slimy and pockmarked mess with gelatinous edges. Â I took one bite and spit it out - it had the gummy texture of seitan, but it was meat.
YIKES. Â All I could think about was that show Kitchen Nightmares. Â If the quality of the food was this bad, what on earth weren't we seeing? Â The waiter was wonderful and gracious, and I hope he finds another job soon - I can't imagine that this place will last much longer.
Where to go for a 24 hour diner when one must avoid Lakeview (Market Days madness)?
Back to the days of yore, Deluxe Diner.
Kinda dark, but they have a parking lot, a lot of seating, and you cannot beat the people watching at Clark/Devon. Cannot. Be. Beat.
The chicken soup is pretty good "sickie" food, and had I been feeling better I would've gotten my standard Butterfinger shake, but alas I could not stomach it...a shame, it's a damn fine treat.
Skip the raisin french toast (skimpy) and just get the regular (much better).
Deluxe Diner: always there in a pinch, with parking. And soup.
It's all about the shakes and cornbread.
Nice little spot, slow service, Â but friendly at least. Not very cheap, not very expensive. The menu has a little something for everyone. It creates those situations where you wind up craving four things that don't go together.
Good coffee, decent pancakes, good chili, but really, it's all about the shakes and cornbread.
Yes, I have ordered those things together, no, I was not stoned.
Yes, it was delicious.
Deluxe Diner is owned by Leona's so expect a similar experience in terms of food that not completely unlike faux gourmet. But they're open all the time and I've found myself playing nerdy collectible card games until the early morn many a night so I can vouch for their friendliness towards the more eclectic crowd.
Food wise I am a big fan of their skillets for breakfast fare, otherwise their pulled pork sandwich, while not authentic BBQ, is very tasty served on a flaky, moist bun and topped with fried onion strings.
In the end, it's Deluxe Diner. Oftimes crowded, other times desolate and barren. But they're always there for you at Clark and Devon, leaving the light on and a refill for your Pepsi. no Coke.
I had been there a few times and the food was pretty good BUT Be Aware that it was shut down for health code violations in April 2005 and was cited again in Jan 2006:
