My parents came to visit me and my dad has a pretty limited palate, so I was guessing by the name that this place would have something he could handle.  We walked in and were immediately greeted by the owner, who proceeded to walk us through the entire menu.  He was very friendly and helpful, and made us feel very welcome.  I was excited that they had a buffalo chicken wrap on the menu, but then I looked over and saw one of the space age coke machines where you can create a drink from over 400 flavors...and proceeded to lose my mind.  I got so wrapped up in making crazy drinks that I forgot about the food I ordered, which arrived 10 minutes or less after being ordered.  On top of that, it was delicious!  My mom got a burger and she said it was great, and my dad had similar comments about his tenderloin.  It's nothing fancy, but for a diner/grille it is top notch.  The service is great, the owners were VERY friendly, the setting was very clean and well designed, and the food is delicious.  I highly recommend it.

This place has AWESOME burgers... I had a girlfriend recommend it during a day of in law gift shopping... While looking over the menu, the two gentlemen seated behind us started talking to us... come to find out the spicy Steve was named after one of them and the other was the Whistler. I love when you can meet the owners of an establishment and they are funny and natural and not overly hoity toity. They actually joked about how unsuccessful the place was.  If its not successful the only reason I can think of is location... its in the same strip as Flemings, across from the Fashion Mall, and tons made in a bag then overpriced restaurants.
How good was the food? My friend and I ate lunch there and then I took my man back for dinner that night.  He enjoyed it as well.  Staff was very friendly and the place relaxed and inexpensive but still offers great quality.

I really liked the concept of the place, and the service was great.  The food was okay, nothing I'd be craving to come back for but I wouldn't be opposed to trying this place again. I've had better burgers, but it wasn't terrible. The flatbread was better than the burger.

We love the food at Detour Express.  the hamburgers are the best and the shredded chicken is excellent.  We have visited there four times in three weeks.  We have also been bring friends and family with us.  It is one of our favorites.  We thought the kid meals were a little expensive.

Great place! Been craving an Italian Beef since my last trip to Chicago. Couldn't find one in Indy until today. The menu is amazing for that quick yet fresh food. One if the owners (Matt) met me at the front door to guide me through my experience. Already knowing want I wanted the Italian Beef, I also indulged in the fries with blue cheese crumbles and Cajun spice. These were extremely delicious. Thanks Matt! You guys are doing a great job and I will spread the word.

Our first visit was really good.  The hubs had a problem with the way his Italian beef was sliced, spoke to a guy and they took the suggestions very well.  Super friendly and good flavor!  We'll be back!

Boo Hoo, I really wanted this to be a favorite.  If you've followed any of my posts, I started a conversation thread asking where are the BEST burgers in Indy.  --Still taking suggestions & still trying to find -
We tried Detour on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago.  The place was pretty  empty but the manager was there in front to greet us.  He asked if we'd been there before and started explaining the posted menu.  We made our choices, paid & grabbed a seat.  It's a nice place with some flat screens and room for enough people to host a rowdy Colts game.

Our food arrived shortly and after we had taken a few bites the manager came by & checked on us.  We had no complaints for him at the time.  We were ravenous.  We did our reviews to each other, later when we got in the car.
FF-   crisp as we ordered & just OK
Buns & accompaniments-  bun fresh, tom. ripe, lettuce wilty, not cold & crisp
Beef-  It's gotta be 'all about the beef'  for a burger joint!  We weren't crazy about the flavor of the beef.  Both of our burgers were way overdone.  I ordered med. (which in a beef or steak joint is usually pretty pink in the center) mine was brown cooked thru & thru.  His was ordered MW & was well, even crispy around the edges.  Both were "extremely" dry.  I had read a review about a "juicey" burger & wanted to taste the meat so I didn't get any condiments,  Well, I was glad the tomato & lettuce moistened it a lil.

I realize that the meat temperature that comes to your table is totally dependent upon the grill chef or grillmaster.  This one seemed to be horsing around a lil maybe due to the emptiness of the place.  The manager would have definitely replaced our burgers if we had complained but we had to keep on moving that day.  I haven't given up on them & want them to succeed.  I will probably give them another try sometime.

Oh, huge & great unbelievably juicey burger with tremendously great flavor, & fresh crisp accompaniments,  I know you're out there.  We're patiently waiting.
    Come to mama & papa!

Thanks so much Matthew W for your response!  By all the other yelper reviews, we just hit a bump in the road.  We will definitely give the burger another try.  Everything else was okey dokey.  Ya got a nice place there & we're rootin for you to be on top.
PS--If you're the mngr or owner that employs the mngr:
I knew you were a great mngr when I saw you leveling the tables in your spare time!  That's unheard of!  good job

A group of coworkers and I checked this place out for lunch pretty soon after they opened.

Do they have some kinks to work out? Yes, but it sounds like they are doing just that based on a local blog that I recently read where the owner responded to comments from folks about pricing, options, etc.

This is what's called a fast-casual place, which means you order at the counter and they bring the food to you.  So, no servers, but the food came out super quick.

Most of us ordered a burger and fries, but the menu looks pretty extensive with American fair (burgeres, chicken sammys, salads and the like).  Based on our first experience alone, Detour Express definitely earned a spot on the work day lunch rotation.

Also, they have one of those fancy Coke FreeStyle machines (I personally love people watching...it's fascinating to see people work these and watch as they smile in delight of all of the options).

This place will be sweet in the summer when they can open the garage doors and they have a bit of outdoor seating.

This place has excellent burgers. I had lunch here about a week ago with some people from work, and we had a great experience. The food is a little pricey, but it is well worth it. Only complaint was that the avocado on my burger was not ready to be used yet. This place has one of those new touch screen coke machines, which is pretty awesome. I like that you can add flavoring to about any drink. The service here was outstanding for the type of place it is. We were treated great at the counter while ordering, and management came around and asked how our meals were. I will definitely be going back here.

Great menu consisting of American fare, burgers, fries, black bean burgers, hand-breaded chicken tenders, salads, wraps, soups, and more. Sports bar atmosphere but family-friendly too. Nice sunny patio out front. On the day we went, the wall separating the patio was lifted to give an open-air dining feel to the indoor diners as well. Food was great! Service was great! My husband and I were trying to get to a movie in less than an hour and really appreciated the speed at which we got our meal.  Will definitely be back!

    Opening Weekend!

We decided to check out the place because we heard they were offering free food. Free always sounds good, so we packed up the family and headed on down into Castleton. Unsure what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised that the free menu consisted of 6 different choices: Italian Beef Sandwich, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Breaded Tenderloin, Chicken Sandwich, Cheeseburger, and a Salad for those wanting to eat light. I was pleased with the selection, because while dining with children, it's hard to explain that they don't have any choices.

The husband and I decided on the tenderloin and the boys were happy with the cheeseburgers. We all love using the touch screen coke machines that gave us a plethora of options on what to drink - and for those non-soda drinkers McAlister's sweet & non-sweet tea were also offered. Our food came out hot and timely - we all enjoyed our meals. The burgers were too big for the boys so we had to go boxes waiting on us upon departure.

The free dinners were being served on behalf of a young man who was burned in an electrical accident and consequently didn't have insurance at the time. They were collecting free will donations on his behalf. The food was so great, we didn't think twice about giving a hefty donation to the cause.

I only rated the Detour Grille a 4 out of 5 because I wasn't able to really see or try the full menu - upon return I will consider raising my rating to a 5 star review. So far, I'm definitely a fan!

My teenage daughter and I stopped in to this new place when we were headed to McAlister's, but were swayed by the enthusiastic guy with a sign on 82nd St. A guy who was probably the owner greeted us as we reviewed the menu, which was creatively displayed on 3 flatscreen TVs up front. He described his favorite items clearly. Ordering is at the counter up front. Drinks and condiments are self serve. They have the Coca Cola Freestyle machines, so if you ever wanted to try a lime Diet Dr. Pepper, this is your opportunity. I had the pothole burger, which was thick and juicy with plenty of A-1 and not enough bleu cheese for my taste. My daughter had three Mexicali Chicken Sandwich, which she liked. The fries are thin cut with the skins on, and were quite good. Subtly hidden on the plate was a little cube of brownie, which was a nice light finish. We'll definitely stop by again to try some other items. I was impressed with the speedy service, especially since I think they've only been open a few days.

Visited for the weekend opening. I ordered the pothole burger because I love blue cheese. The burger was outstanding, juicy and cooked to perfection. I did skip the tomato and red onion on my burger. My surprise was the macaroni and cheese. I never order mac and cheese but couldn't resist the looks of this  tempting adult version. It did not disappoint. Cheesy but with layers of flavor not mushy or overcooked. Definitely an item I've always considered kids menu fare but this is a surprisingly adult version. Also, this is the only restaurant that I've been to with the coolest coke machine EVER! It has like 100 different types of drink you can make. Decor is sports bar but the open front makes it perfect to stop in after a ladies day of shopping at Ulta. Next time trying the stoplight salad. Huge portions, great prices, nice addition to this location.
