The one negative was the blond woman behind the window where wait staff picked up their food and where people apparently could order takeout. This woman was so loud, so very loud it disturbed our lunch. The people seated next to us thought there was a fight going on. Tape her shut please!
The food was surprisingly good. We didn't expect much when we sat down, considering the location and the plastic utensils on the table and the drinks served in plastic cups as well. The waitress was most pleasant, the turkey burger nicely prepared, and the calamari decent.
my girl & i ate here cuz she saw the fried jalapenos as an appetizer. however nothin else on the menu sounded appealing so that was all we had. the service and the food were both jus ok. i love navy pier cuz i like bein outside & enjoyin the nice sunny chitown weather but this restaurant is not that great. will come back to navy pier but not to this restaurant.
Review Source:Would give 2 1/2 stars if an option but had to round down over one major item. Metal hard chairs that leave ugly waffle marks on the back of your legs if you're wearing shorts.
Went here for dinner yesterday after an amazing day in Chicago. They were pretty busy but our waitress was right on us for drink orders. One friend couldn't make up her mind & I think that irritated our waitress. She was short & snappy the rest of our meal. All servers seem young & unpolished. I imagine there is a high turnover there.
Smallish but adequate menu with very good prices for a touristy location. Good prices on everything except water. No free tap water here. You must buy a $2 small bottle of water. There excuse is that there are water fountains inside the pier. That excuse doesn't "hold water" for me.
Anyhoo... I had the Italian Beef sandwich with the beer sampler. ($16.99) It was a ginormous sandwich with a pile of tasty waffle fries. I asked for a side of ranch for fries & didn't receive with my meal. Another friend asked for a side of blue cheese dressing & didn't get it either. Instead they put blue cheese crumbles on her sandwich and charger her $1.00. (subtracted from server tip) Blue cheese friend had the steak sandwich and was unimpressed. Too "bready". She asked to sub fries for onion rings for $1.99 and when her food came out there were no onion rings. When they did come out it was a very small portion for $1.99. Hello people! One onion costs 50 cents max! 3rd friend had a panini that was unremarkable. She did have the Dreamsicle drink & it was too strong for her so they do put booze in their drinks.
Great location & the price is right, just buyer beware & wear pants. ;)
I am shocked at all the bad reviews. Â We went to Navy Pier last Monday for Winter Wonderland. Â We stopped at Dock Street for lunch. There was NOONE there. Â It was after 1:00. The atmosphere here is nice. Windows run along the entire eating area which allows for a nice view of the lake and city. Â I bet it is crazy busy in the summer.
We were seated quickly by an interesting and friendly waiter.
His knowledge of their beer list wasn't great but he was quick to find answers. Â The beer list here goes beyond your typical lite domestic but not extensive. Â
I ordered a chicken wrap which was great. It was spicy and had great flavor. Â Claire had the appetizer of four small sandwhiches. Â Pulled pork, chicken, hamburger and pulled beef. Â I thought they were all good. Â Pork and Beer were the best. Â
It is strange that there isn't a kids menu however the waiter told us they had chicken tenders, pb&j and a couple other things. Â
We will certainly go back.
There were seven of us piled into a corner seating on the outdoor terrace of Dock Street Cafe, after we had served as volunteers at a Navy Pier expo. Although I can't say that our dining experience was stellar, at least no one at our table crabbed as much as the whiny tourist lady at the next table complaining about wanting to leave if they had to wait one more single minute for their order (they never did leave - they stayed until their meals were finished). The Guinness I had was ridiculously flat - and served in a clear plastic cup (I gotta be more careful in where I order a Guinness). The turkey burger was rather bland, but it did come with packets of mustard and mayo. The waffle fries were flavorful and saved the day. Oh, and it was very nice outside.
Review Source:Wow, I'm shocked that this place has gotten such bad reviews! Every time I've gone there I've been really pleased. As a local I usually avoid tourist areas but my boyfriend works just down the street and during the summer we like to hit up Dock Street at least once a week. The outdoor seating is my fave because I love to people watch and it's so nice being right on the water.
We ususally just stick to the wraps and burgers seeing as how we're only ever there for lunch, so I def recommend trying those. Also, the drinks are yummy and the prices are decent... But the thing that really keeps us coming back is the service. I swear they have some of the nicest servers of any restaurant I've been to on the Pier... Dealing with tourists all day would make me want to rip my hair out!
I have been living in Chicago for 6 months, Dock Street Cafe is the WORST restaurant I have eaten at so far.
Well, my expectations were not high since it is at the super touristy navy pier. However, it was a sunny day, and we decided to go there because we knew they had outdoor dining.
Lets start with the food. I had a Veggie burger with thier Waffle fries. The food tasted alllright, but it was cold. And if I wasnt practically starving for waiting for the food, I would have left.
The service was sooooo slow, and I thought it was because they had an indoor seating area too, that also was packed. But when I went to the restrooms I saw that there was no people sitting inside. They were 6-7 people in total outside the kitchen, and it was MAX 10 tables that was occupied. This should be very easy to handle. However, they made a huge mess, gave people cold food, and didnt come check by us before after 25 minutes after sitting down. When I asked another waiter just if she could get me a soda, she answered rudely that our table was not her responsibility, and left.
If I could give 0 stars, I would.
I just wish I had seen these reviews before stopping here.
Took ten minutes for them to even seat us despite empty tables and no line. Â Then for about fifteen minutes we waited for our server. Â Finally one of the waiters came over and says "I'm not your server, but can I get your drink orders?" Â That was the one and only semblance of customer service that day. Â Asked for water because it was hot and didn't want to drink just beer and were told "we don't have tap water" only the bottle water at 3 dollars a bottle. My friend got the jerk chicken wrap and upon biting into it noted there was no jerk sauce, just dry old chicken breast. Â Apparently you have to ask for the sauce.
He got about two bites through and stopped because even with the sauce it was hardly edible. Â Got our check and left. Â The party next to us got there just after us and never even had their order taken while we were there. Â They left without ordering at about the same time we did.
SKIP IT.
Let's just make this easy. Â Save your money and go to McDonalds. Â The Dock Street Cafe has bland, tasteless and otherwise below average food. Â
Our food was served cold and the fish and chips was horrible. Â We even asked the waitress if she recommended the fish and chips; which she said were rather tasty. Â Needless to say, they were anything but delicious.
Just don't go... if you are visiting from out of town there are a lot of better quick bite places in Chicago. Â And if you live in Chicago, then you know better than to try and find a decent bite to eat on Navy Pier.
The food was Edible that's about all I can say for it. What really made me mad about this place is they won't serve you tap water. You are expected to pay $2.00 for a bottle the sodas are 2.99 and each refill costs $1.00. I would highly suggest you hit up a different restaurant at the Pier!
Review Source:I just got home from a lovely afternoon walking through the city. Â We wanted to hit the beer garden at Navy Pier, but walked all the way to it only to discover that it is under construction. Â This was the next closest place.
OK beer selection.
OK service. Â
Pretty bad food. Â OK, really bad food. Â I had the shrimp plate and my boyfriend had the jerk chicken wrap. Â We both walked away saying it was the worst meal we'd had in a long time. Â Way overpriced as well.
Two stars for the great view and people watching.
um, yeah, this place is not so great. Â good place to kick up your heels after you've walked all the way down Navy Pier. Â But the food was gross:
* "mini tacos" = deep fried small crescent shaped tortilla shells with some mysterious brown goo filling. Â blech, one star.
* my friend got the turkey burger which he says was good (+1 star)
* but there was a short little hair at the bottom of his fries. gross! (-1 star) Â
* they apologized and comp'd his meal (+1 star). Â
total= 2 stars.
In a sea of mediocre food offerings at Navy Pier, Dock Street Grill does nothing to stand out. Â But it was the closest place with outside seating to the beer garden, so what the heck.
First bad sign was a restaurant at a touristy, family-friendly location having no kid's menu. Â Second sign was that we had to buy bottles of water - no freebie water here.
The food was bland. Â The BBQ chicken sandwich was a patty of white meat (it actually looked boiled) with a spot of sauce on it. Â Two in our party had the fish and chips and said it was pretty good.
I did find the service amusing - all the servers were sitting together at one side of the patio waiting to get flagged down by their tables.
Next time I'll walk a little farther to Billy Goat . . .
