Good neighborhood pub indeed! Â We all know how much I love this particular neighborhood, and Dougherty's is exactly the kind of place that belongs here. Â It's simple and basic, nice relaxing decor, and booze and food. Â No frills, no gimmicks, just a neighborhood hangout.
We came here Sunday for some drinks and to exchange Christmas presents, our server was really friendly. Â The downside is the TVs aren't strategically placed, so you have to pick your spot well if you're looking to catch a game, but that's not terrible. Â I haven't tried the food here, but I probably will have the chance as I'm coming back.
Cheers!
I love this place. Â It's a great neighborhood bar. Â The staff is wonderful, the owners are truly invested in the quality of the business, and it's a great local crowd. Â The food is delicious and comes in large portions. Â I'm sad the Guinness Ice Cream had to go, but still, love the place.
Review Source:2012 Review #300:
Our only experience with Dougherty's was not a very pleasant one, but it had nothin to do with the bar. Nonetheless we weren't wanting to run back too soon but a group of people wanted to go. It's a dive, but it's not a creepy dive. It's the type of place that makes S Broadway interesting and I hope doesn't get razed for a fancy wine bar.
Basics:
Daily drink specials.
Large space.
Nice bartenders.
Billiards.
Female and male differentiated restrooms. I point this out because I somehow didn't catch this at first. Whoops.
Food menu until late. Including super spicy Irish nachos. They were strangely cold, though. We also tried a crab cake, which was better than I was expecting.
Dougherty's also has Hammerschlagen, a very German game with a high potential for bodily injury, which also means it's fun and good for a crowd. I'd never played before so maybe this is one of the few places in Denver to offer it. All around, this is a good, down to basics place that's refreshing in the onslaught of shiny new offerings.
My check-in list keeps reminding me off all the new places I've tried, but have yet to review... some were good, but none has prompted me to get on here and start writing again - until Dougherty's.
My sister and I walked in here during happy hour on a Monday. We were immediately greeted and told that we could sit wherever we like. We headed to the right - Dougherty's is divided into three sections: pool and seating on the left, bar in the middle, plenty of table seating on the right. We found a comfy table, sat down, and checked out the menu.
I was shocked. This is a neighborhood bar? Well, the prices certainly reflected that - Dales on draft was BOGO for $4.50 (so, $2.25 each). But the menu! They have a fantastic assortment of food, including your traditional pub fare (wings, fries, onion rings), all the way to awesome choices straight from the UK... including Shepard's pie, bangers and mash, and Belfast chicken.
Well, we were ending a three day bender (bday weekend drinking) and opted for none of the above. We asked the wonderful server for the beet salad, which we'd be splitting. It was brought out on two separate plates, one for each of us. Each plate was presented beautifully and came with its own side of dressing - all this for no extra charge. The salad was fresh, and the beets were incredible! We also had a few Dale's - during happy hour, they give you a poker chip to hang onto until you order the next one (which is free when you turn in the chip).
In fact, Dougherty's was so good we went back for lunch today. My sister, a vegetarian, ordered the BYOB with a garden burger, and loved it. My bangers and mash was awesome - I just finished it for dinner.
I'm so, so glad that Dougherty's is just a few blocks away from me. It is definitely my new favorite neighborhood bar.
Made it down to the hipster-esque neighborhood that is South Broadway to meet up with a group of folks yesterday, and I have to say that a some previous Yelp reviews made me a bit nervous. Â Specifically, we had the kids in tow and the - Good for Kids? NO - rating had me thinking that we would quickly be in and out of this place. Â While I would agree that this place is not really GOOD for kids, the staff and other patrons were wholly accepting of our well-behaved 3-year old and chubby-cheeked 5-month old. Â It was a Saturday afternoon and there were only a few other folks in the place. Â Our server was cheerfully accommodating with the cutest old-school wooden highchair I had ever seen and a handful of crackers for the baby. I was especially glad that the bathrooms were anything but divey and I did not have to precariously hold my preschooler above the seat to pee.
The hubby and I were cheerful to find that they had Harp on tap - and it was on special for happy hour. We didn't stay long and never got a chance to try the food, but it's certainly a place I'd like to come back to - sans kiddos.
I have to say that this seriously made me sad.
I haven't been to this place in a long while and when I ordered the burger that I used to get every time I went here I didn't expect to get anything but an awesome burger...
which it wasn't.
I had ordered the burger medium rare and it came out looking like a slab of charcoal... and almost as impossible to cut through, or chew for that matter. And the bun that it used to come on had now been replaced with what seemed like a dry dinner roll--the whole thing was so dry! I couldn't drink enough water to get the whole thing down. And even my boyfriend said that the fries that came with it (that had once been a wonderful compliment to the burger) resembled something he had gotten at a dive bar on Colfax... not good.
Needless to say, I don't feel like coming back anymore... and that is really disappointing to me.
So my girl used to live two blocks away from this restaurant and needless to say we visited alot. probably too much as I loosen my belt. This restaurant used to have one of the best chefs in town in my mind RJ. He made everything from scratch and the specials were just that special! I have tried to locate him after he and the owner seemed to have disagreement over something and he was let go. This restaurant is still good brew pub restaurnat but nothing what is used to be in regards to food quality. They have made several improvements to this pub/restaurant as they added new tv's and epxanded certain areas to better accomodate people but lost a little of its hoel in the wall feel which I liked (but to each their own).
Also I would like to reach out to all the yelpers out there if anyone knows RJ's contact information my girlfriend and I would love to talk to him about possibly catering our wedding...so fellow yelpers would love your help.
I will NEVER visit this restaurant. Â I wish that I could give it zero stars!
I spoke with Manager Wes today to book an event for my social club. Â We host College Basketball game watches across the city and our members drop a nice amount of money on alcohol. Â I called Doughtery's to inquire about whether or not the restaurant could accommodate our group. Â When Wes answered the phone I asked for a manager. "This is Wes," he kept repeating. Â This went on about three times before I asked him if he was the manager. Â "What do you want?" He asked. Â I then asked him if this was a joke. Â I really thought I had dialed the wrong number. Â Wes went on to be very rude telling me that he gets about 20 sales calls a day asking for a manager and he thought I was another sales call. Â He then went on to chastise me and tell me I should have identified myself on the phone.
I promptly let him know that I would inform all members of my social club to not visit this establishment and I was appalled at how he treated a customer. Â Wes went on to tell me that I wasn't a customer yet and hung up the phone!
If this is how they treat people who want to rent out a large space for an event, I can only imagine how they treat their customers. Â And I won't find out. Â I suggest you take your business to one of the many other reputable Irish restaurants in the city!
We walked to Dougherty's on a chilli night and I ordered a Irish Coffee.... YUMMMMY! Â The bartender did a great job mixing that one up. Â The bartender that was working that night was SUPER nice, I wish I could remember his name. Â
After sitting at the bar for the first hour we decided to play a game there that I have never seen anywhere else. Â I called it Stump, I'm not sure that is the correct name for it. Â Each person has a nail and you have to be the first to hammer it into this giant stump. Â It is really hard after 2 Irish Coffees.
Every time we have been there is always a nice crowd there. Â They have an outdoor patio out front which i think is a nice touch!
This review is to reflect on the sudden and unexpected change in the breakfast menu prices.
I know I am not Dougherty's target group. I don't like to get drunk and I'm not out to meet guys (though the ones who haunt the patio are consistently grungy-cute when I erase the cigs from mind). I rarely crave their type of menu, though it is done very very well.
What I did have here fairly often was a $6 or so small breakfast plate. A single benedict with potato soup was my weekend morning treat many a time. Those days are over. I guess they lost one customer they probably never really cared about.
Do try the stuffed burgers. They are mad-messy but delicious. And order it med-rare. A well done burger is no burger at all.
Love this little neighborhood pub. Â Great food, bar, beer, ambiance and service. Â A win-win-win-win-win.
Be careful with the nails game.
Food- try the Peter Piper or the lollipop appetizer deal. Â If you go on the weekends their brunch is delicious and $5-6 per plate. Â I go with the biscuits and gravy but have heard it's all good. Â Eggs benedict, french toast, etc... Super duper.
I've been to Dougherty's a few times over the years. Their drinks are reasonably priced and they always have a decent number of beers on tap. Their food is amazing! While their pub food is good, I'm a big fan of their home style meals. Their pecan pie wasn't bad either. Being from the South, I never joke when it comes to pecan pie.
If you want a seat on the patio, get their early. It's very "intimate." It is narrow and fills up quickly. Since it's between Broadway and Lincoln it can be a little loud. But, inside there is plenty of seating and I dig the decor. Old vinyl record covers line the walls.
I don't visit this place as much as I'd like because it's not within walking distance of my apartment. However, it is definitely work the drive (or bike ride). You'll definitely see me there again...
Came here on a wed night before a seeing a band at the 3 Kings. I had the Peter Piper burger which was stuffed with Jalapenos and Cream Cheese, topped with Pepper Jack cheese and a smoky chipotle mayonnaise. The bun could of been a bit more sturdy as I ended up having to use a knife and fork but it was still an awesome burger. I was actually torn on what to order as they have a great looking menu and next time I am over that way I wont hesitate to grab a bite to eat there.
Our server could of been a bit more attentive on drinks as I found myself staring at an empty Guinness glass a couple of times tho the food taking forever to come out wasn't his fault!
To cap off a Sunday afternoon of bar hoping, my buddy and I wondered in with hopes of one last enjoyable moment to the weekend before Monday morning. Â Already on Broadway, we ventured to Dougherty's where we had never been before. Â It looked much more quant than the standard bars right on Broadway, and the open patio was calling our name. Â
I ended up ordering a couple Guinness drafts and my buddy ordered a pair of beers and their Rueben sandwich. Â After having been to Breckenridge Brewery just the day before, I was a bit let down by the draft selections, but that is just preference. Â The food menu, however, was sufficient in incorporating your Irish pub fare and by the look of the Rueben, I imagine all is relatively authentic.
The patio, although not huge in size nor anything extravagant, was perfect for an uninterrupted meal and conversation. Â Since it sits on the side street of Broadway on Ellsworth, you can avoid the clutter, noise, and chaos of Broadway traffic and crazies. Â I may be biased in my reviews on our waitress, but as a native Minnesotan, she is one of the few that have ever acknowledged or appreciated my North Stars t-shirt that I was wearing. Â All in all, along with her willingness to tolerate our constant banter, she and the bar itself were awesome!
I am on a quest to try all the restaurants in my neighborhood so last night I dragged five friends to Dougherty's to knock it off the list. I had run by it several times and after reading reviews I was totally excited to check it out - it looked really divey but then the food was supposedly really good so that is just cool to me. Anyhoodle we went last night and it was not super busy but it wasn't dead either. The waitress was very nice even though only a few of us were drinking.
The food was excellent, I mean wow!! Really not what one would expect!! I had the goat cheese salad with chicken and it was delicious. The goat cheese was crusted and fried but not too much. And the chicken was really nicely done. At the table we also had a Reuben, a chicken sandwich, a stuffed burger (that looked incredible, next time I think I will try it), and two Shepherd's Pies. Everyone really liked their food. Thumbs up!! Now I may need to start drinking a bit more often to make this place my neighborhood pub.
My only negatives were that the seating was a bit uncomfortable and they don't take AmEx. But that is not so bad really.
I drove down Broadway thinking there were some lunch places to check out. Â Turned the corner, and there it was, I heard of that place. Â There were some scruffy lookin youths outside but that did not deter me at noon midday. Â I went in, a bit overdressed for me and the occasion. Â
The service was great--pleasant, gracious, helpful  The beet salad was solidly good, and the crab cakes fine, if a bit salty.  Clearly these appetizers were meant to consume with a beverage.  I would go again because the unusual items are worth a trip back and the quality delivered beget confidence in the future.  Small businesses are the backbone of community and culture.
This is a fun little place with a nice focus on simple eats that exceed your expectations.
Had a hamburger stuffed with corned beef and cabbage that forced me to decide between eating with a fork or eating with my hands. Â I chose the former because this was one juicy and delicious burger and I didn't want to risk wasting some by having it drip down my arm. Â The fries were nice and crispy too which was a good off-setting texture.
I'll try the more 'Irish' flavors next time like the potato soup and the Shepard's pie.
Whether eating in or getting it to go, they serve some of my favorite burgers in town. My level of adoration for the Pied Piper is almost obsessive. Stuffed with cream cheese and jalapenos, this is the JUICIEST burger I've ever had. You need to cut this burger in half so it doesn't squirt all over your face. The fries are amazing, thin and crispy. They have the best food for any pub/tavern/bar I've had in a good long while.
The service here is friendly and efficient. I'm not a huge fan of charging a dollar for takeout, and once a customer almost puked on me while I was waiting for my to go order, but the food here is worth it!
Downing cold beers on the patio will be a favorite of mine this summer.
Its Saint Patrick's day and I wanted to go to the Irish Snug but in my old age I forgot I was going to help the Folks at a cabinet spot load some drawers and cabinets etc. One place we did check out was the Habitat for Humanity place off of I-25. Which was around lunch time, so I fired up my handy Yelp app on iPhone and found this Doughertys.
Very cool spot, I could see kicking it here drinking Guinness and Jameson while eating a shepherds pie and flirting with Redhead waitresses, yes there were 2! I ordered a O'mally which is a burger stuffed with Corn Beef and Cabbage since it is St Pats day I felt obligated even though I wanted the burger stuffed with cream cheese and jalapenos! Bro in law ordered that one instead and Folks got the fish and chips.
My burger was real tasty and fitting for the day, plus it accompanied Guinness quite well. My Folks fish and chips which looked like Gorton fish fillets wasn't that good I and my Bro Inlaw did me a solid and left me a bit of his burger and I have to say my first choice in the O'mally was on point his wasn't to tasty.
Overall this is a spot I will come back to, for the Guinness, Jameson, Shepperd's pie or to flirt with Red heads!
I love this place! Â I've been about 5 times now after a coworker raved about an "amazing" veggie sandwich that "you'd never expect at an Irish pub!"
The service is always prompt and friendly. Â There seem to be a lot of regular customers here... a nice, friendly vibe.
They have 25-cent wings and 2-for-1 beers during their weekday happy hour (4-7 or 4-6, can't remember exactly) and drink specials even on the weekends ($3 Harp on Sat. night is my fave). Â If you don't get your 2nd drink during happy hour, you get a chip to redeem for your free drink on your next visit.
I highly recommend the Guinness mac 'n cheese, fish and chips, the burger stuffed w/corned beef, the burger stuffed w/blue cheese, the onion rings, and above all -- the Sundae, Bloody Sundae! Â It's a warm brownie topped w/Guinness ice cream, hot fudge, and Bailey's whipped cream -- YUM!!!
I first heard of Dougherty's from their ad in The Denver Daily News. There was a line that caught my eye. "Best Shepard's Pie in Denver."
A friend and I went there for lunch. Very cozy decor. It was noon, but we were the only customers. The waitperson was knowledgeable and efficient. I had a chicken dish and my friend a salad. Food? Mediocre at best. A disappointment to say the least. Would I go back? Probably not. Too many other places that take more pride in their food. Hmmm. Maybe I should have had the Shepard's Pie.
My momma suggested Dougherty's, and it was a great pick. Â They have a great menu with a variety of tasty vittles, as well as specials (Mamma had some awesome mussles - yum!), and a decent happy hour with 2 for 1's on draft beers and perhaps mixed drinks (not positive about that).
Here's another plus: Â Free shot of Jamesons on your birthday, and a free shot if your last name is Dougherty or any variation of the name...
After reading many reviews on yelp, we decided to take our chances and check this place out this last Friday night. Â As soon as we walked down the street, we were greeted by the owner who was standing outside. Â He asked us if we were just stopping in for drinks or sitting in the dining room, then he walked us over to the entrance to the dining room to avoid the crowds in the bar.
After sitting us down (with no wait, on a Friday!) at a makeshift table for five, we learned we'd have one more in our group. Â Where most restaurants would get annoyed with you at this point in time, they were quick to pull another table over and jokingly tell us to "bring more! We've got room!". Â
Our waitress was on the ball. Â Everyone at our table got anything from beer to Jameson to vodka, and it wasn't skimping. Â You didn't have to order another drink after a few sips, and everything was priced reasonably. Â
We ordered two appetizers for the table, the irish lollypops and the four cheese torte. Â The irish lollypops were absolutely incredible, and the torte was pretty good, but when I asked the waitress for a suggestion, she didn't hesitate to make sure we ordered the lollypops first and foremost. Â
For dinner our table was spread between the stuffed burgers and the guiness mac and cheese. Â Everyone shared though, so I can give a first person account of everything. Â
The burger, the Pepper Piper, or the Pied Piper, was absolutely incredible. Â A burger stuffed with cream cheese an jalapenos with chipotle mayonnaise and pepperjack cheese. Â Everyone at the table had this one melting in their mouths. Â What an invention of a burger! Â The waitress was nice enough to explain to cut the burger before eating it so the juices got on the bun and not all over your face!
The guiness mac and cheese was just as good. Â It had an amazing flavor, not too strong on anything. Â Just the perfect amount of creamy. Â
We figured we couldn't stop there, we had to see what some of the desserts were about. Â We got the irish cream cheesecake with bailey's whipped topping and the sundae brownie sundae, guiness ice cream on top of a brownie also with bailey's whipped topping. Â The cheesecake actually didn't suit us very well, it just wasn't up to what we were expecting - but the brownie..... it was probably one of the best desserts I've eaten at a restaurant in a long time. Â It's such a simple concept, but the flavors were simply to die for. Â
After all is said and done, this place is a gem in the middle of everything. Â The owner came around to the table several times to check on us, as well as the chef! Â They are on the lookout to make their customers happy, and they are great at it. Â With their reasonable prices and amazing service, we will be going there often.
I have been in a couple of times. Â So very good. Â I wasn't looking for anything heavy but after reading the review of the Leprechaun Lollipops in Westword that week I knew we had to try them. Â So delicious. My only complaint would be that there are only three on the plate...fine if you have three people but what if there are two of you? Who gets the last one? Lucky for me my dining partner shared. Â But adding a fourth wouldn't be a bad idea.
I ordered the warm goat cheese salad which to my delight was exactly what I was wanting. Â The goat cheese was lightly breaded and warmed and put on a bed of greens with other delights. Order it and see! My dining partner got the Black and Blue stuffed burger and it looked amazing as well. The fries were salted just right with what felt like sea salt...nice big crystals. Â Both entrees were prepared very well.
My question is: Â for an Irish pub... why the Red Hook and Rum and Coke drink specials? That seems to always be the special when we are there. I like a good inexpensive Red Hook but it was amusing to have a Jamaican beer offered as a special. Â
Great neighborhood feel, friendly people and great food. Â Will gladly return.
We got here at 11:20 on a Friday. The kitchen closes at 11. Somebody who worked there, not sure who, saw us standing around looking all famished and said he would talk to the chef and see if he would make us something. He did. We were grateful.
I got the guinness mac and cheese which was pretty alright. Boy got prime rib and mashy tatoes.
They were definitely rushing us out after we ate but thats ok, I understand they were supposed to be closed ages ago. Didn't stay at the bar as it was standing room only.
Everything that makes South Broadway great is here. Friendly people, good food and the holy beer. It doesn't hurt that we can walk here....
Stuffed burgers. I know, take a minute. My friend and I shared "The Fallen Drunkard (AKA the Black and Blue)" which by no means is in reference to our state as we wandered out, and the "Dougherty's Cheese Steak" sans green peppers (icky). I had a side salad instead of fries, yummy mix of various greens, cheese, cherry toms, cucumbers, and croutons. A nice mix and more than a generous portion.
The burger was goopy and yummy and oozing with hot blue cheese and fat pieces of bacon - a truly beautiful thing. Be careful if you cut it in half, that cheese is molten and will explode, I would warn the same if  you decide to just bite in. The cheese steak has a nice kick from jalapeno slices thrown in. It had great flavor and served on soft bread. I couldn't finish my halves and have enough for a whole other meal. The onion rings were fat and the blue cheese very bluesy - stocked with chunks of cheese.
Service was great and the place is full of regulars. Every one seemed to know everyone, even on a lazy Monday afternoon. Everything that makes South Broadway great is here.
Yelp, once again, did not let me down with this place. Â Reading the reviews after the mac & cheese tour informed me they have stuffed burgers. Â I immediately thought that I *needed* to try it. Â When I checked out their online menu I saw that one burger was stuffed with jalapenos and cream cheese. Â Excuse me?!?! Â That was it. Â I had to go.
Fast forward 1 month later, and my husband was in the mood for fish and chips. Â As I am not a seafood fan, I racked my brain, knowing that there was an Irish Pub I wanted to try for some reason. Â Finally I remembered the infamous stuffed burger...and we were on our way.
I fell in love with this place immediately upon walking in. Â Such a chill and laid back atmosphere. Â I felt comfortable right away, as it has a great neighborhood bar feel. Â The service was great, and I appreciated the honesty of the bartenders when asked a question about the food (i.e. informing my husband that the fish comes frozen and already battered, when he asked how good it was).
And now the food: unbelievable. Â I started with an order of Jamaican Jerk Wings. Â I usually only eat boneless wings, but for some reason I was in a wing mood (which NEVER happens). Â These wings were exactly what I was wanting: perfectly cooked (well done and crispy), with an amazing sauce (great jerk flavor, spicy and a little sweet). Â
A mimosa (only $3 on Sundas) and a Newcastle later we decided to order our entrees. Â I ordered the The Peter Piper Burger: Â Stuffed with Jalapenos and Cream Cheese, topped with Pepper Jack and served with a smoky chipotle mayonnaise. Â One of the best burgers I have EVER had! Â It had such a great grill flavor...reminded me of summer, grilling burgers in the backyard on a little charcoal grill...absolute happiness. Â The bun was a perfect match: toasted Ciabatta bun...not too much bread, and just soft enough to soak up the juices without falling apart. Â The chipotle mayo was a perfect smokey partner to the spicy and creamy filling. Â Their fries were also pretty fantastic: freshly cut and perfectly cooked (crispy).
I kept talking about how awesome that burger was for the rest of the night...and the next day. Â I can't wait to go back to have it again. Â My husband also really liked his food. Â Couple that with the ambiance, and we have found a new favorite place to grab some pub food and hang out...while quizzing each other using the Trivial Pursuit cards on the bar.
It was a Sunday afternoon and we were supposed to go to Buenos Aires Grill for its last day and despite loving that place, I just wasn't in the mood for their food.
I wanted Fish and Chips. Â I wanted to go to GB's, but got vetoed. Â Which was fair since I was deciding to ditch Buenos Aires. Lacey then mentioned an Irish place she had been wanting to try ever since missing the Mac and Cheese tour.
Nice call. Â The food was far above my expectations. Â The place was quaint, and I appreciated the division between the Tables-esque dining room and the pub/bar. Â I had the crab-cod cake. Â Again, an unexpected mix that I really appreciated.
I then had the Shrimp Basket. Jumbo tiger shrimp, home made batter, home cut and cooked fries. Â Excellent.
Lacey had the stuffed burger... Look for her review. Â I'll just give it a 'wow'.
The service was good, the place had a great neighborhood feel. Recommended.
So I've been back...
The atmosphere is better with the addition of some Irish-landscape artwork, but it still doesn't work. Somehow, Capone's pulled it off, and their replacement, Dougherty's, just can't.
I understand Guinness is served warm in the UK. More power to y'all, but I'd appreciate even a "cool" Guinness if not cold. The warm beer didn't do it for me.
I can see what others might like about the tasty, greasy GIANT sandwiches, but this place just isn't for me, and I wouldn't recommend it like other restaurants I've not liked.
My husband and I got the opportunity to go out to dinner tonight, not a frequent occurence in our house. Â Sometimes we are like two ships passing in the night. Â I didn't ask where he wanted to go, I told him we had to go to Dougherty's. Â He sounded sort of apprehensive, but I explained that they have stuffed burgers and homemade fries. Â
I ordered the corned beef and cabbage stuffed burger, which sounds so wrong in theory. Â It was oh so right though. Â I just wish there was more filling. Â The burger was plump and juicy with the usual toppings; lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. Â I put a little bit of ketchup and some of thier chipotle mayo on my burger and it was so tastey. Â
My husband ordered the T-Bone steak with "champ", which is mashed potatoes with butter and chives. Â He loved it, I didn't have more than a bite because it was medium rare. Â
For dessert we tried the Irish Cream Cheesecake with Baileys Whipped Cream. Â It was fabulous. I really like homemade graham cracker crust and that is just what I got. Â The cheesecake didn't have too strong of a flavor, which I liked. Â
My husband was happy that I suggested this place and he was already looking at the menu for the next time.
I really like this place. The bartenders are really swift to say hi and get you a cocktail. The servers are sweet too! They were quick and happy! I liked the interior quiet a bit. It was cute in the dinning room. The table cloths were striped and cool tones. The little fresh flowers in shot glasses at every table made me think I was in a coffee shop rather than a bar.
I have been here before the mac and cheese tour and I can not be happier. Everyone is SO nice!!
I am SO coming  back for the stuffed burgers.... Cream cheese and Jalapenos!! SCORE!
I liked the mac and cheese.... better than I could make... : )
Needed a little more something but I am not sure what that was.... i will agree that the little crumbs on top made it awesome... I wish the whole dish had the crumbs... not just the top....
They have smithwicks on tap and for that I will be back.. SO tasty!
Very cool spot! I am a fan!
$2 mimosas on Sunday! Their mimosas and service were great here!
MAC AND CHEESE TOUR VERDICT: Â Guinness Mac and Cheese - Blah! Some reviewers said that they could find a hint of Guinness but for me, being an avid Guinness drinker didn't taste any Guinness, the cheese gravy had a brownish color to it but no taste.
This place is another great place to spend some time with friends but definitely not for mac and cheese.
Went for leg one of the mac n cheese tour! I thought Dougherty's went out of their way for us making individual portions of their mac n cheese. The service was the best I have ever experienced here before and I hope they keep it up! As for the Guinness mac n cheese it wasn't may favorite, but I did enjoy trying it! The noodles were elbow macaroni and the Guinness flavor was present and not too bold which was good. I just wished it was a bit more cheesy. Plus I thought the noodles were a little to overcooked. I did enjoy the bread crumb topping though!
I am still a big fan of their ruben's.
Cool little spot. On a uye mac and cheese tasting this was our first stop.
The mac and cheese was a Guinness specialty made especially for us and it was good...very good.
The crowd was typical S. Broadway cool mofo's.
Very diverse.
Great servers - attentive and bouncy.
It was cool - not very warm and inviting, but cool.
Excellent service while sitting on the patio on a perfect Saturday afternoon.
The blue cheese burger is a killer.
The onion rings are real onion and very good.
The Reuben is very tasty.
French fries are just average.
It is a neighborhood place. You go to enjoy good to excellent food and have a few beers.
Place rules.
They served mac & cheese with cut up hot dogs for dinner. Â I don't think it was on the menu, and instead was a daily special, but it was delish.
Also, drink specials for every day of the week are displayed on a chalkboard in plain sight of the bar. Â I like to let drink specials diversify my pallet for me, and I feel like less of a cheap-o when I can just read them instead of asking.
Friendly wait-staff as well.
I spend a lot of time at Sputnik. I also am a smoker. And thus, I spend a lot of time on the sidewalk at Broadway and Ellsworth. Â It was during one of these smoking breaks that I saw possibly the most hilarious fight ever, happening in front of Dougherty's. Two very large, very inebriated men, swinging like sissies on the smoking patio, neither connecting with anything, and a crowd of drunken jennies trying to pry them apart. Â I thought, man these guys are so drunk they couldn't probably fight a sixth grader, but that's probably for the best... watching people really fight is scary. Â And then I thought, hey, I wasn't that place was called Capone's, or something.
So there sat Dougherty's for months before, on a suggestion from a friend, I made my way over to try one of their signature stuffed burgers. Â Snowy early Saturday evening, accompanied by my friend Matt who also has a cheeseburger problem. Â
The first thing I noticed is man, I really dislike the color motif in here. Â Feels too new, too seafoam. Â I get tense in places that are too painty, sort of lacking in character. Also places that are too bright. The ambience here is just not to my liking. Â But whatever.
The bartender and chef were both amicable enough. Â The Black and Blue stuffed burger was reasonably acceptable, actually cooked to medium rare like I prefer. Â The 'blue cheese mousse' as the chef calls it leaks out everywhere making for a messy sort of deal but hells bells who really cares about that. Â But all in all, it was just good. Not great. Hey, I don't mind my toppings on top of the burger you know?
I'm sure if I continue hanging around south Broadway I'll eventually make my way back to Dougherty's. Â But something about the combination of factors in my experience there leaves me a tad disinterested in hurrying back.
Oh yes, on the plus side, they do have little bowls of jelly bellys on the bar. I love those buttered popcorn ones.
Just off the beaten path sits Dougherty's, a new addition to the booze-soaked stretch that is central Broadway. Tucked in behind Freaky's, it's close enough to the strip to include it on your Broadway Pub Crawl, but far enough off so that it feels like a neighborhood joint. Either way, I dig this place.
And OH MAN is the food good!! It was a cold, windy night and I was feeling the need for soup. The bartender steered me towards the potato leek and it was perfectly creamy and delicious, served with a tasty side of grilled flatbread. I'm a sucker for good bread. I also got the fried goat cheese salad... mmmm... fried cheese. But as good as these items were, I couldn't keep my hands off my husband's plate. He opted for one of their "stuffed burgers" (they have several options to choose from, or you can Create Your Own Stuffage) and fries. Now, I'm certainly no burger pro, but this was one of the BEST DAMN BURGERS I'd ever tasted. Cooked perfectly and served on a bun that was both crunchy and chewy in all the right places, dripping with the "stuffing" (he opted for jalapenos, bacon, and pepper jack cheese), and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I'm drooling just thinking about it.
Friends of ours who'd been there before also raved about the cheese plate. It's a PLATE OF CHEESE. Good cheese. Does it get any better than that?
Aside from the good food, the place sports a separate dining and bar area (we ate at the bar) for busier nights, plus a couple pool tables and a cool jukebox. Bonus points for super-friendly staff (both the owner and head chef came out and chatted it up with us as we enjoyed our dinner). We'll definitely be going back, if not for the phenomenal burgers, and cool vibe, then for the PLATE OF CHEESE. Because nothing beats good cheese...

We came back to Dougherty's this afternoon-- the Sunday of St. Patrick's Day weekend-- for a friend's birthday celebration, and things were definitely still as awesome as they were the first time! I had the Fish n' Chips for lunch, and they may well be some of the best I've ever had. THICK chunks of perfectly cooked white fish (cod or halibut, I assume, though I'm not a fish expert), battered light and simple and served with a homemade take on tartar sauce (think similar taste, but chunky and awesome) and perfectly horseradishy cocktail sauce. I also had a bite of my friend's Four Cheese Torte-- layers of cheesy goodness atop crispy triangles of phyllo dough. OH MY GAWD was it good!! So yeah, Dougherty's is batting 1000 so far!
One thing to note: even though the crowd on the bar side (our side) was mildly rowdy, the noise barely filtered into the separate dining area at all. Really nice, for those who want more of a chillout experience.
Another thing to note: it's SO COOL that they have homemade mix CDs on the jukebox! Scour those playlists for some serious gems. I played "Sister Christian" twice... just because I could.
