Love. Love. Love.
Seriously good sushi. Not just good for NWI, but good good. Five minutes from home. Ah-mazing! And they deliver?! Holy smokes, I've found heaven.
My favs:
Red Dragon Roll
House Maki
Godzilla Roll
anything with tuna
I've been here at least a dozen times since I found it and I've yet to have something I don't like. I agree with one of the previous posts though, if you order a meal, what you get with your order seems to be a little inconsistent. Sometimes it's a salad, sometimes an eggroll, sometimes more, sometimes less. Maybe it's the difference between lunch and dinner? I don't know. I do usually have to ask if I want anything other than water, but the service is always friendly. Honestly though, they could put the soup nazi in here and I would still go cause it's that good.
Eat here if you like to play Russian Roulette. Â Everything is inconsistent from the food to the service.
- Â I ordered the spicy basil dish three times. Â The first time it was great. Â The next two times it was a completely different dish. Â Disgusting!
- My veggie and avocado sushi rolls were always old and not very good. Â My boyfriend says the fresh fish is great.
- We had decent service a couple of times. Â One day, there was a lady in there (the mom maybe?) and the service was wonderful. Â But the majority of the time, the service was so terrible I wanted to walk out. Â One time we ordered and 30 minutes later when we still didn't have food, we saw the sushi chef come in to work....so it took 45 minutes to get our food. Â They could have told us he wasn't there when we ordered. I think they took our orders and then called and woke him up. Â Every time without fail, they would forget or mess up something of mine. Â When, all I ordered was a salad, I got my food 15 minutes after my boyfriend got his. Â We regularly had to go searching for the waiter so we could ask for our bill.
- The whole restaurant is dirty and gross.
- You could never guess what came with your food or how much you would get. Â We always went for lunch. Â But we could order the same thing over and over and occasionally we would dinner portions and occasionally lunch portions. Â Sometimes they came with an eggroll....sometimes they came with soup and salad....sometimes they came with all three....and sometimes they came with nothing.
- Most days I would freeze while sitting at the table. Â They would keep the AC set to very cold even once fall came. Â One very hot summer day we went in and the AC was off and the door was open. Â It felt about 100 degrees in the dining room. Â I was so miserable and hot that I couldn't even eat my food. Â Maybe the AC was broken or something, but it was awful.
I only gave them so many chances because my boyfriend loved the fish so much and we couldn't find any other sushi places in the area. Â Also, it was walking distance from my office. Â But I finally ended up refusing to ever go here again.
A bit baffled by this restaurant more than being completely turned off.
The following parts of the experience confused me so that I'm not giving this a terribly low star rating nor a high one In fact, if possible, I would give it two and half stars instead of three -
*I (wish) I saw the sign ... (the lesser-known Ace of Base classic)-
Getting off the freeway and driving into what seemed like a quaint town, we were intrigued by the area. But then the signage on this business made it look abandoned compared to everything else around it in the suburban plaza . My husband and I drove around for a little bit until we realized that this was our intended destination. Because of the tired red awning that once said "Fried Rice Express," Â the shadow of that former restaurant's wording was on clear display with no trace on the outside of the currently residing "Dragon Bowl."
*Don't judge a restaurant by its sign (just as I advise students not to judge a book by its cover) -
From first glance when walking into the place, I thought "OK - maybe it was just the outside because the inside actually seems to have it together." With uplighting behind the sushi bar, flat screen TVs playing Chinese dramas and Asian-inspired decor with plants and white screens. However, upon closer inspection, my husband and I slowly became turned off with the random grocery bags of stuff peeking out underneath our booth, the worn down wood benches and the mismatched salt and pepper shakers.
*Service with a smile (and a to-go with a touche)-
Service was courteous and consistent through our meal, which made ordering easy from such a huge menu that boasted "healthy style" Japanese, Thai and Chinese. However, we were later disappointed when we got the incorrect order for our carryout bag and sadly didn't realize this until we got home. (We ordered the Summer Roll app to go, but instead got some other sushi roll.)
Deal breaker or money maker?
Eh, in the end, the food didn't completely turn me off so I would be willing to give Dragon Bowl another shot.
Our app was the Tuna Tataki, which was rare as it should be BUT swimming in a pool of soy sauce. The Windy City Maki roll was beautifully presented with the carefully laid thin slices of avocado mimicking a fan, but the filling wasn't consistent through out. And the Chicken in Green Curry had a solid kick but was a little odd with the unexpected potato and bit too watery of a sauce altogether.
I would really be willing to come back for the Chinese because I bet that will be the best out of the three categories of Asian cuisine offered here.
I was starting to despair of ever finding a Chinese restaurant around here that wasn't scary or made me sick. Â And then I got a flyer in the mail for Dragon Bowl. Â YAY! Â And the best part is that you can order online for delivery!! Â I'm too tired when I get off work to deal with driving through traffic and being around more people...I just need food and quiet time! Â This is the perfect solution! Â Their website is easy to find, easy to order, and the delivery driver is really nice!
Review Source:Dissapointed. Â We've ordered from here quite a few times before and liked it... and today was very lackluster. Â Fried rice had virtually no flavor...really no seasoning at all. Â Our "Thai" dishes were just overly sweet...not flavored with fish sauce and balanced like last time. Â Sushi bar was closed so not able to get sushi...I think we ordered too late at 8:30 and they just wanted to throw together our food and leave. Â They close at 9:00. Â Bummer.
Review Source:The food is delicious, but the wait staff is poor (although nice). Any time I've gone there, I've had to wait 15-20 minutes to see anyone about ordering food or getting the food. I'm echoing Felicia here when I say that I don't think anyone ever asks us for what we want to drink.
As for food - most of it is usually delicious. The shrimp low mein is my favorite. However, the gyoza seems to have been baked (rather than steamed), and the green tea ice cream tasted kind of like bubble gum ice cream. The sushi has been pretty good, though.
Overall, it's good if you're not willing or able to get out to a nicer place in the city or outside the region.
My boyfriend and I love sushi, but usually when we want it we have to drive into Chicago. So I was pretty excited when I found this place on Yelp. I think it's accurate to say that when you want sushi, but you don't want to go into the city, Dragon Bowl is a good choice.
But first--the service is beyond terrible. We were seated and given glasses of water promptly, but it was about fifteen minutes before anyone paid attention to us again. We put in our order and got it a fairly short time later, but no one came to check on us or refill our water. Come to think of it, they never actually asked us if we wanted anything to drink. It took too long to get the check, too. Most of our time there was spent waiting, rather than eating. We went about an hour before they closed, so maybe that had something to do with it.
The sushi was surprisingly good for the region. It wasn't the freshest tasting sushi I've ever had, but it was still quite good. Like I said, good to satisfy a sushi craving without having to make a drive to the city.
Go if you like sushi, but don't expect to be waited on very well.
Well, I have to admit... my favorite spot for Chinese food is Triple Crown in Chicago, but when I can't make the drive - this is where I go. Â
The mongolian beef is great, best in the region. Â I've had sushi here 3 times, never disappointed. Â Waiter told me they get their seafood in on Monday's and Thursdays - so if your trying to time the fresh seafood, come on Tuesday and Friday. Â
Overall very pleased with the food at this place, it will be a stop on the way home from work when I have a sushi craving.
I thought it'd be ok, but it was pretty underwhelming. It looked more or less fine at first glance, like a typical casual pho place as far as appearance and atmosphere goes. It took probably half a minute for anyone to greet me when I walked in. The employees at the sushi bar just stood there staring at me, as if it wasn't their job to take care of customers. After I ordered my food, it was probably 15 minutes before I even got my drink, and that was after I asked for it. I was never even asked if everything was ok, even though I was the only person there for most of my visit. There seems to be a culture of it just being a job and that service doesn't really matter. And they have probably 10 people working there mostly doing nothing.
As for the food, the boba (pearl milk tea) tasted okay. Maybe a bit sweet and obvious that it was powder, but that's normal. The pearls were way overcooked though and not at all chewy. The tuna donburi was... not in a donburi bowl but a shallow oval plate. There was something slightly off about the fish, maybe it was slightly dry from being improperly frozen? The texture of the rice was actually pleasantly good. I'm used to drier rice at restaurants, but this had more moisture. There was what looked like furikake on the rice too though, which was kind of strange.
Food: mediocre
Service: terrible
Service - 2 stars. Â I'm not sure how they were so busy or what they were doing. Â Maybe they were just short handed. Â It seemed like a normal / light amount of work and waits were pretty long. Â We waited for ~10 minutes to be seated and workers walked by us a couple of times. Â Other things took a little while. Â It wasn't really terrible, I just couldn't tell why it wasn't prompt.
Mango shrimp - Great but not at all what I expected. Â Presentation was 10/10. Â The flavor was like coconut shrimp but with mango on the side instead of coconut shavings in the sauce. Â The shrimp size and texture was perfect.
Spicy tuna had great presentation and good flavor. Â Crazy roll - good flavor and presentation. Â Salmon sashimi - really good. Â Plenty large of a piece and sliced thinner. Â Great flavor and texture, very fresh.
Interesting thing - the sign in the window says Chinese & American. Â Not sure what that is supposed to mean but for the facts it gives it is well disguised.
Rice / noodle lovers may go crazy here though. Â Big selection.
01/18/12 My husband and I went for lunch. Wow, what a delight. We had the Dragon, House Maki, and Hot n Sour soup. All very good. We also purchased the Green Turtle, and Chicago Moonlight to go. Place isn't much to look at but who cares. If you like good Asian food, this place does not disappoint. We also had a order of pan-fried noodles with pork. This was good as well. We had no room left to try the Sushi, but reason to return. Nice option to Schererville's House of Kobe. Not that that place is bad, but this place is very GOOD.
Review Source:I've had the menu for this place stashed for some time now so last Thursday I decided to give it a go as I had a hankering for some sushi. There's not many options for good sushi in NW Indiana. At least there weren't. The sushi was as good as any I've had. The sashimi tasted very fresh to me. We also had a california roll and a "red snapper nirvana" that I was very pleased with. Prices are definitely reasonable and I'd say better than all the sushi places I've been before. The sashimi combination and california platter are definitely good options to try everything. I will come back here for sure. Place was really empty, I hope they get a lot of business or take out. The service was really excellent...they were definitely aiming to please and came to ask how everything was multiple times.
Only recommendation I would make is to maybe get some different hot tea choices besides Lipton....nasty!
This is not elegant dining but......prices are good while both sushi and non-sushi food are great.
The service is.......weird. They seem frantic and lost even if you are the only table in the restaurant and they are slow to serve. Go when you aren't in a hurry. My favorite menu item is the ahi-poki tuna appetizer. It's wonderful.
Very good food!
I am pretty picky when it comes to my Chinese food; always concerned about the quality of meats, cleanliness, and preparation. I also am usually concerned when a restaurant offers both Chinese and Japanese cuisine.
Dragon Bowl exceeded my expectations and continues to deliver excellent food, both Chinese and sushi! I am a big fan of their gyoza, sushi sample platter, and their traditional Chinese dishes; such as orange chicken, general tso, etc.
The only drawback to this restaurant is that I found their service to be slightly unfriendly and off-putting. However, for affordable and fresh food, I am willing to overlook it.
Went for lunch and was the only diner. I've had delivery but decided that good sushi would do the trick. Decor is somewhat spartan but pleasant as was the staff, who seemed very eager to please.
Ordered sashimi lunch special ($9.95) and was surprised to find the lunch special, which often has 'extras' such as soup, etc, was 8 thin slices of fresh fish. But besides the shaved carrot, ginger and wasabi, that was it! To their credit, I asked for some rice and they threw it in gratis, along with egg drop soup. It's refreshing to have a good sushi place nearby. There's really nothing else good in the area (sorry, House of Kobi). Â I would certainly go back...and will.
This is my go to Chinese place in the area. Haven't ordered anything here that I haven't liked. My only complaints are very long delivery times (pickup wait are usually minimal) and I wish the dinner specials didn't come with soup. There's more than enough food without it and I generally end up just throwing it out. I'd much rather they make the meal cheaper and leave the soup as an option. Overall, if you live in the area, I definitely recommend it.
Review Source:I recently moved to Indiana and didnt know too many asian restaurants in the area but my bf suggested this place he noticed (kind of hidden). Â He is asian so I took his advice on trying it out. Â The decor kind of sucked and i was ready to walk out but my guy said to jst give it a chance so I did and I dont regret it! It is my goto place for sushi and smoothies.. I love this place they have redone the whole dining area since so it looks way better. Â the appetizer sampler is a must we always order it when we go and they deliver..
Review Source:Yelp helped me find this place, so I'm leaving a review in return.
We were visiting family in Illinois/Indiana recently, and we stayed primarily in Lansing, IL with my grandmother. She loves Chinese food, so we had to go at least once during our trip.
She has a favourite Chinese restaurant in Lansing, but last time I was in the area and ate there, my experience wasn't great (they switched owners I believe). So, I jumped on Yelp and searched for alternatives. Dragon Bowl popped up, and I think it's pretty new. It's in Munster, but it is the same distance from her house as the other restaurant in Lansing. It made sense. She wasn't too happy at first, since she is very stubborn, but I convinced her to trust Yelp! After our meal was over, she thanked me for suggesting the place and admitted that I was right ;)
This place wasn't very busy at all, which was actually very nice. Not a lot of people know that this restaurant is there, since it's kind of hidden away. The service was excellent, prompt, and polite. We pretty much had 3 people waiting on us. They weren't trying to rush us or anything, but just checked on us frequently to make sure we were okay.
The food was excellent, and there was a lot of it! I think our dinners were only about $7, and we got an entree, egg roll, rice, and a huge bowl of soup. Everything was in rather large portions, especially the soup! We had no idea we'd get so much food, so we couldn't even finish everything unfortunately. We also had some delicious hot tea with our meals. I checked out lunch prices, and the same entrees during lunchtime are about $5 each. If I lived nearby, I'd definitely stop by during lunch all the time! :)
Good shushi in the suburbs??? Well before I went to this place it thought I was only a dream. I have to say that Dragon Bowl has suprisingly good shishi. Of course it's not a five star restaurant, but I am definately a fan and will be goining back.
My only negative critique is that the ambiance is lacking. It looks like they had some cool design ideas and were almost finished, but didn't. Also the bathrooms are kinda yuck.
Wow.
This place has really good sushi--and not even just for Indiana. It's pretty dang good.
I'm not sure what sort of ambiance you expect when you want to eat sushi, but for me, I don't really care. If it's good, I'll eat it out of a dumpster. So this place isn't the fanciest of restaurants, but it isn't a hole-in-the-wall either. It's kind of a typical Chinese restaurant that rarely has more than two tables full of people (I really hope it doesn't close!).
Lately, I've been only eating sushi at Asian Harbor in Homewood, which is awesome, but sometimes I don't want to drive that far. Dragon Bowl is super convenient, and they deliver too!
They DO have a Chinese menu, but I haven't tried anything from it yet. I generally order the same thing every time, substituting in a different "special" roll whenever I go. The crab rangoons are HUGE and delicious--probably the best I've had anywhere. My favorite special rolls are probably the Arizona Summer and Spicy Windy Maki which both have a lot of spice and cilantro, giving them a bit of a southwestern zing. The sweet potato roll is a cheap addition to your meal for $2.95 and these things taste like candy. They're awesome. Don't even bother to put wasabi or soy sauce on them. They're sweet, crunchy, and they come with a sweet sauce that might make them more of a dessert than a savory dish.
I've been eating at this place like twice a week. It's just that good and reasonable. I just I hope I don't get mercury poisoning.
FINALLY! I HATE House of Kobe's sushi, so when I drove by and saw this place in the oddest of locations, I had to stop in! I was a bit weary at first, but after going in, I was welcomed by very good service and a very friendly staff. My party and I ordered quite a bit of food that ranged from sushi to General's and Orange chickens, etc. Â The waitress brought us all complimentary egg drop soups, so we thought, "Hmmm, this place is great!" Â The combo dinner plates with chicken were large and the sushi was very good (not the freshest, but much better than anything else in the area). Â I really enjoyed everything about it. Â I ordered the Green Turtle Roll, and the sushi chef adorned it to make it look like an actual turtle :-) I really like this place and recommend it to everyone around. Â Do not be thrown by the location. Â Also, they deliver for $2!! Â Check out their menu online ahead of time, as I did, and you wil see that the prices are very fair...especially once you see the portion size!
Review Source:after reading the reviews on this place we tried it one night. Â the decor and atmosphere was good and after some of the best edemame I have had I was thinking I had found a hidden treasure.
well... lets just say that was the highlight of the experience.
the service was horrible.. Â when you order soup it should come out before your meal.. or at least WITH your meal.. not after the entree.
the Miso soup was totally flavorless... we had a shrimp tempura roll, Philadelphia roll and a Caterpillar roll... the ST roll was just OK.. the Caterpillar roll was better but the Philly was horrible.
we also had some beef & broccoli and it was average.... they have a coupon special where you get a free fried rice with a $25 or more purchase so I got the shrimp variety and it was actually decent.
we never got a refill on our drinks even the water and we had to track someone down to get the bill and then again to pay.
the place also has a full Chinese menu on which I can not review but based on the service I would not go back again to try it.
who knew? Â somebody needs to tell me these things.....a little place in a strip mall.....next to a tanning salon....cheap video store.... a papa johns ( shudder ) Â and an old mexican place that has closed ( goat tacos on sunday will be missed ) and a over priced liquor store.......
so i decide to go in, get a take-out menu just to check it out...... holy crap...im staring at a shushi bar.....hmmm ... i say to self.... *self why didnt you  know about this place?  .. took a sniff.....clean and fresh air..no fishy smell..... ok i have to try this.....
check out the menu....chinese AND japanese food along with the sushi.....i love potstickers....but notice gyoza on the menu..... kinda like japanese potstickers...... 4 pan seared little dumplings.....filled with chicken and veggies.... very good... $3.95 a good deal
then i hit the sushi menu.....Nigiri..... tataki seared tuna...2 for $3.95....also ikura salmon roe.... again 2 for $3.95 ....... seems to be a thing $3.95 here .who am i to complain?? Â
take em home and chow down...... some soy and wasabi and im making my tummi happy......
sushi i can wok too from my house :-)
im a big new fan
table seating also..... plus the cool smoothies with the tapicoa pearls in them..... yumm again
dragon bowl, i will be back soon :-)
