I picked up some carryout tonight. We had the Greek style chicken that comes with broasted taters and rice. I also got a small Greek salad that Mom and I split.

The portions were plentiful, in fact Mom and I shared one chicken meal and shared the small salad and there was still plenty of salad left. The food was pretty good but not great. The rice was fairly average, but the chicken had a nice flavor and the taters were taters.

The salad was refreshing. Aside from the usual feta cheese, olives, etc, they also put in one dolmates which was kinda cool. I could live on Greek olives. Wish there had been a few more.

We seem to stop here every few years and I always make a mental note to stop again and then I forget about it. This time for sure!!!!!

There are a number of ver good places to hit in the area for this type of "real" fast food: West of Edens, Franks, Papa Chris, that Edens place on Cicero . . . but for me, my two go-to sandwiches are: (1) a polish and (2) a gyro.

For my tastes, which obviously differ, East of Edens hits both of these in the right places.  My wife is an Italian Beef afficionado and East of Edens is also her favorite place too.

Ehh.. I tried to really like this place and it's just dissapoints time and time again. I've ordered food here twice and picked it up since it's close to work.

I usually don't like to venture out and try "new things" so I stick with ordering the Chicken breast on a pita. And I phone in my order twice and both times I've gone I've yet still had to wait additional time once I am there for it to be done. Kinda defeats the purpose of callin my order in ahead of time.. frankly the people on the phone aren't very friendly either .

ANYWAY.. the Chicken breast on a pita does not wow me.  It's ok a bit dry and bland and usually a lil too char-broiled for me.  For being a greek place I expected something a lot more juicy! and flavorful.

I am on a sour note with this place since I've ordered not that long ago and got my order deliver and it was completely wrong after waiting an hour to get here they expected to me wait an additonal order to get my food correct?...

Not a happy camper!! Really not sure if I say i'll never eat here again but it will be a while before I think about it again!!

East of Edens is our go-to carry out and we go to it about once a week.  Love the chicken bob sandwiches and the half roast chicken.  The rice and potatoes are prettty awesome too.  I wish I could get that flavor out of my own kitchen!

Chicago is interesting in that it prides itself on it's hot dogs and gyros.   So many of these road side places you pass have "GYROS and Hot Dogs" prominently displayed on it's signs, written on the walls, it's all over the place for everyone to see.

My big issue is, it's all the same brand stuff. Everyone uses Vienna Beef Hotdogs and Kronos brand Gyro Meat.. They all use poppy seed buns and the generic sort of pita bread..

What is the difference, why is one place better than the next when everyone uses the same product.. It's all just average tasting stuff that is as good or as boring as the next place..

Here, i walk in, i speak with the owner.. He is clearly Greek.. I think to myself, ok, this is exciting, he must make his own Gyro Meat.. But, no it's the same as meat that i had the last time I ate a gyro in this area.. Good but, boring..

They serve you way too much meat to fit in the pita or for a human being to consume.. The fries are ok, some frozen brand.. There is a cucumber sauce, a few onions, a couple of out of season tomatoes..   Enjoy your meal..

This is a cop hang out for sure.. Perhaps there are other things on the menu that they make from scratch..

After growing up in Edgebrook and living all over Chicago, my dude and I have found ourselves moving from Ravenswood to Sauganash. Now, we've been used to having Byron's next door and realized tonight that we need to find the nearest gyros so we can get our fix.

Solid 3 stars with the possibility of moving on up.

The dude got the gyros plate. It was solid, lots of meat. I was needing a plate of deep fried goodness and went for the shrimp. Mediocre. Don't think I'll get it again. The lemon soup is delish though.

Maybe next Friday we'll give it another go. The $4.55 chicken leg dinner is calling my name, gotta give it a try.

we heard god things about this place so we gave it a try...NEVER AGAIN!!! the gyro was the driest Ive ever had. The white gyro sauce was gritty like it had a powder base! The fries were dry as hell and cold. I really wanted to love this place but it was horrible....

    In a word - uninspired.

I'm not normally one to pick a fight with other posters, but if this is your idea of a "good," or better, Greek place - you need to get out more.

East of Edens is cute in that it is certainly a neighborhood joint. You can tell the staff and owners care about the place; it's clean, pleasant and there's a cute shrine to Harry, a beloved 102 year old. This is the place that sponsors your local Little League team - which is all commendable.

Just don't eat here and expect to have a great meal.

I want to be nice to this place, but the food was terrible. I had the gyro plate which came with a bowl of lemon rice soup, on Saturday, it's the only soup available (and it's their standard soup, available every day).

If you were in the hospital and received a bowl of this soup, you would be horribly disappointed. You would think someone designed it to keep you in the hospital longer by depressing you to the point of illness. The texture was like warm wallpaper paste and it coated the spoon. It tasted of lemon bars made by sad people. One taste was too much.

I already tire of writing about this place, but I will let you know that the gyro meat was so overcooked that it was like a interpretative take on tree bark. Ugh.

I love you Greeks for giving us East of Edens.
The food here is great, and the staff is always very friendly. I think you can order pretty much anything off the menu and you won't be disappointed. Gyros, french fries, hot dogs (Vienna's of course), chicken and rice, pitas, kabobs, you name it, it's all good.

For the great quality of food the prices are very fair.

It's a great place to bring kids and families, they have a really great clean atmosphere going on.

Picked up some gyros and lemon rice soup. The lemon rice soup was a little thicker than home cooking but very delicious. Gyros was fresh and just the way I like it. The tzakiki sauce is not the best out there although tasty, I like mine super think like it would be made with sour cream or something.

In any case, I really like this place. The food is always fresh and is served with a smile and the chicken everything is awesome!

These are the 5 words I say when I am ordering at the counter.  Oven Baked Chicken Legs Dinner, okay well maybe a few more words but this dish right here is my meal of choice.  It comes with 2 pieces of chicken legs (if i am lucky they might even have a straggler in there so ill end up with 3), potatoes, rice and a roll of bread.  But here is my trick that I love to do and I love how they can do it for me.  I replace the roll of bread with garlic bread, replace the potatoes with french fries and turn the chicken into BBQ chicken.  All for the same price of $4.95!  Add a water and you have got a perfect meal for anyone's budget!
Sometimes I'd be full off half the meal and I could get a box to go and take the rest to go. The outdoor patio is perfect when summer/spring is here.  The same nice staff ever since I have been going here.

Overall good and I have been coming here since they opened. Good hot dogs and steak sandwiches. My only complaint is that they have shrunk the size of the steak in the sandwiches. They also cut their chicken too thin where it is about the same thickness as a pita. i tried a chicken wrap which was about 90% lettuce with barely any meat.

The food tastes good, I just wish they would get back to their old portions for meat. Maybe when the economy improves?

You cannot diss on this place at all...

Used to work at a restaurant right down the block (Bennigan's).

Of all the short order "greek american" venues, this place's chicken kabob blows everyone away...hate to say it...but even blows west of eden's away for some reason.

I can't vouch for much of their manu that ISN'T greek...but everything that is Mediterranean on their menu is badass.

East of Edens is my local go to place when I'm hungry and can't think of where else to go.  While that may sound like faint praise, East of Edens is actually pretty good.

I can highly recommend the "Chicken Leg Special" plate.  I usually like chicken white meat instead of dark meat, but this plate is really good.  The chicken is cooked Greek style and is delicious.  They serve it with bread, roasted potatoes, and simmered rice.  If that is starch overload for you, you can sub steamed veggies for the rice or potatoes.

Service is polite, if not friendly, and parking can always be found in the either the east lot or the bigger west lot.

This place serves its purpose as the decent Greek place to go to in the area. I think Hubbs is better, but I could not wait any longer for Greek potatoes and rice. Opa.

I was extremely excited to experience "East of Eden". And to tell you the truth, for the longest time I assume that the name is in reference to east of the Garden of Eden, the biblical paradise. This is something that I clearly over analyzed. The person behind the counter simply stated that they are on the east side of the Eden's expressway. If you ask me, I like my exotic meaning. A taste of paradise, now that sounds awesome!

Excited and ready to sink my teeth into their wonderful juicy gyros... hmmmm... While I was waiting I notice that their décor has a very strong appeal and presences to the local neighborhood. The seating area resembles of a 1990ish burger king or something along the lines of fast food. They took a while to make gyros, but whatever... I wouldn't want them to rush perfection.

    [Long pause]

I was truly disappointed... I really don't see what the all the rave is all about? How hard is it to make gyros? The cucumber sauce too watered down. The meat was extremely salty. To tell you the truth, I was thinking how much better McDonald is, as to speed, service, and sad to say -- their food...

Excellent Greek-y spoon fast food; don't expect any creative grub. Slowish service but that was OK since the food was well prepared. You can find some good healthy choices here, too, including a nice grilled chicken breast on a pita with varied vegetables plus a side of rice. Their tzatziki sauce (Greek cucumber yogurt sauce) was just OK, nothing like The Works in Niles but again, everything else was really tasty and freshly prepared.

I will definitely be back when I have a taste for this kind of fast food.

Holy spinach Pie!!! This place is a Must if you're hungry for chicken or lemon rice soup....

Look I'm going to be very straight forward with you, everything else here is mediocre at best. Its Menu is no different than any of the other greek/hot dog joints on any other corner of any other Chicago neighborhood.

Hot dogs... cant really screw those up
Burgers ... they have the char grilled flavor you either like or you don't
    Gyros .... i wouldn't know a good one from a bad one.
and the list goes on and on

    BUT!~!!

They have the most incredible Special that gets over looked constantly by the average eater.

The Chicken Special!! its 5 bucks... and you get two huge pieces of chicken, an overly generous portion of rice, three large Greek style potato slices and garlic bread!! Its the Pocket busting Price of the century (please note this is an extreme exaggeration, yet it really is a great deal)!! Moneys tight these days and you gotta eat, and if you're willing to make the drive over I highly recommend it because there just aren't many specials like this in the city, and when you find one, you have to hop on it!

Part hot dog/hamburger joint with a big heaping side of Greek stuff. The specialties are their Greek style baked chicken, a true bargain. However, my favorite is the egg lemon soup and spinach pie, make sure you get some lemon wedges to drizzle on it.

Hot dogs are pretty standard, the burgers are charred so they're a cut above most places like this and the fries are lightly seasoned.

Overall, it's a three star place with an extra star for being open on Saturday until 9 and also Sunday I believe also till around 8 or 9, which in this neck of the woods is pretty rare, so it does deserve that extra star.

Great Food! Cops are always there, so you know it has to be great food and a great deal. I've been going for the last 18 years. Family Business that has been serving up gyros and one of the  best hot dogs in the Chicago Area. Say hi to Gus, the owner, when you go in. They are really involved in the Sauganash-Edgebrook community. East of Edens is  truly a Sauganash staple.

    I don't know how I forgot this!

I've been going to East of Edens ever since they were open.  One of my most memorable visits was when my baby brother was about 2 years old and forgot his blanket there.  He cried up a storm and the workers were nice enough to hold it for us.

    Anyways..on topic...

East of Edens has been an area staple for probably 15 years or so now.  It's owned by a Greek family, and they serve a few greek things, amongst your normal burgers, dogs, beefs, salads, and shakes.  All of the food is pretty good, but they do the best on chicken, ribs, gyros, and dogs. The burger isn't bad, but it isn't stellar.  Stay away from the beef.  It's kinda rough and chewy, and definitely over cooked.

One of my favorites is the Chicken Special.  It's $4.45 and you get several pieces of chicken, roasted potatoes, rice, and garlic bread.  They've had this special ever since I can remember and it's always sold real well.

Another favorite is the ribs.  They're juicy, tender, tasty, and fall off the bone.  I don't eat ribs anymore, but if I did, this would be the place I'd go.

They're pretty nice in there, and they know the menu quite well.  I've ordered over the phone numerous times, and they always get my mother's "pita on the side w/ my salad" request wrong.  It's no big deal though just so long as you check the bag before you leave.

East was remodeled about 5 years ago or something, and it's really nice for a fast food place.  Although I kind of do miss the nostalgia and sentimental value of the original location, this new one is super nice and I never question the cleanliness.

Try east of Edens.  Really, you can't go wrong.  Their motto is "Just Good Food" and I don't think that's terribly far from the truth. East Of Edens only has two locations, this one, and another one that's the same thing about 3 miles away called "West Of Edens."

    Thanks for reading!

A pretty good Greek hotdog/gyro/etc type of place.  I would stop back if I was in the neighborhood, or hungry as I was going by on the Edens, but probably wouldn't go too far out of my way for it.

Umm... I've been going to East of Edens every once in a while for about four years. FUNNY STORY that happened to me today.. I managed to leave my keys where the people who are waiting for thier food sit. My friend and I go to our table for about 2 hours to talk and eat. As we were leaving I noticed the keys to my car/house were missing. As we looked around, they were nowhere to be found. I go to the counter to ask the man in his possible 70s and ask if he has seen a set of keys anywhere. He quickly responded "No." and walked away. Not very helpful... Didn't even seem to give a flying crap.

Anyway, there were 3 staff members on thier break eating. As my friend and I search the place top to bottom, these guys keep glancing over at us and laughing... okay? Whatever, I didn't think much of it. As I see one of them get up and start speaking spanish to one a woman working the cash register with the old man. I see her look at us and take something from the man under the counter. My friend runs up there asking again did you find a set of car keys? And the old man answers again, "No, I told you before..." and as he was saying that my friend sees the black lanyard that was connected to my keys halfway shown from under the register. My friend grabs them and gives them to me.

The ENTIRE staff knew they were my keys. I was making a huge scene about it the entire time, asking everyone if they have seen them. You may think, oh maybe they didnt know the keys were yours. They all knew they were, EVERYONE even the customers knew they were. The customers were 10 million times more helpful than the staff.

I would never go there again. Unless they had an entirely new staff, or was under new management. Everyone can still go there, just dont leave your shit around because the assholes there are sketchy as fuhk.

Simple dog stop menu, decent food.  I'm not a real fan of this kind of place because everytime i think its the front door slamming shut, i realize its another of my arteries.

Not worth a special trip, but good food nevertheless.

There is only one reason I go here...  The Greek Baked Chicken meal.  Grilled just right.  The skin of a grilled chicken is always the tastiest, but not here.  You can taste the flavor throughout the meat of the chicken.  Not too salty and not too oily.

Fast and Great service.  If you need something quick, something healthy, something tasty...  Go here.

During the spring and summer time, you can take advantage of the outside seating and bask in the sun while eating a great meal.

Its a decent char house.  Not one on a list of my favorite top 5 greek char houses, but, if your in the area, don't want to go too far.  Its doable.

Check out late springs or summers, sit in the garden area.  Try between the hours of 11am and 3pm.  Its just the right time to miss traffic and just enjoy sitting outside under the canopy in the shade of the leaves and enormous hanging cucumbers and other produce actively growing onto the canopy and fencing of the garden seating area.

Not a bad place at all. I used to go here for lunch (it's right off the expressway). It has been here forever, and has really reasonable prices. I either order a hotdog or Italian beef. The Italian beef is the best in the area (Not better than what you will find on Taylot St, but again, the best for the area.)

My favorite gyro spot by far.  Clean, fast, efficient service, even when they're busy.  Most of the time they already know my order.  Just be careful because they will occasionally screw up your take out.  That's the only reason I can't give them five stars.  Great gyros, burgers, Italian beefs, hell almost everything I've had here has been good.  The fries are pretty ordinary but no one's perfect.  I mean, you really can't screw up fries.  I'm not a big fan of rice but I could eat theirs everyday of the week.

Parking lots are kind of awkward to get to and their location isn't the best in town, but it's worth the drive.  Oh I love their super bright red fruit (or lack of fruit) punch.  Fantastic.

My dad LOVES this place, so I've been going here ever since I was 10.  It has the BEST Greek chicken in the city.  The 1/2 chicken comes with choice of potato, rice, and soup/salad/or coleslaw.  Huge portions at a cheap price.  The menu is vast, so there's something for everyone!  Friendly owners and staff, too...That's an additional reason that the customers keep coming back here! ;)

The name given for this business is misleading: they do have quite adequate seating and you can eat there.

This is a fast food place with an emphasis on gyros and other Greek items.  They have a good menu, portions are very generous, and prices are good.  Low-carb combination plate are an interesting option here.  Cute patio decorated by the owner with gourd vines in summer.  In addtion to standard fast-foot stuff, they also have ribs.  I have never tried them but have seen a number of customers ordering them here.

This is a very well done take out restaurant that serves good, tasty food. Make no mistake this is not a sit down place with waitstaff. You walk in, place your order and when it comes up you grab it and go, or sit down in the bright dining area and chow down on chicken, sausage, burgers, or italian beef and more. Hearty portions that would make mama blush.( For some reason I don't really recognize the photo's posted here.)
