I have been to the Egghead twice, once for lunch and once for breakfast and was very satisfied.  I definitely feel like I am in an old school typical diner, however, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

Welcome to the hood, Egghead! I never ate the Alps and wouldn't have recommended it...scary waitresses, even scarier food.

Egghead Diner hit the spot with their hangover chilaquiles! You have the option of soy or pork chorizo and the spice level was spot on.

There also was a variety of patrons on a Sunday morning....which I appreciate. While I love babies (and Northcenter has it's share), I don't want to be stuck eating with only them when I am fighting last night's drinking.

I love this place and will be back again! Stopped in the other day and really enjoyed my breakfast. Reasonable priced and i am a fan of the potatoes and the sausage patties were awesome!! Another perk was the music they had playing was at an audible level, where most places dont do this. No five star here just because i am not a fan of the "only open till 3". I am a breakfast type of girl throught the day and will be forced to go the The Lincoln since there are no other diners around.

Been there twice now and loved it. The service was friendly and the place cleaned up nicely from the old Alps East. Nothing fancy, the focus is the food.

It's diner with an emphasis on Mexican, so you can get anything from chilaquiles to eggs and bacon to pancakes. The best I had so far was the chorizo hash, which was a plate of chorizo, beans and chiles topped with eggs and really good toast. Better than average coffee as well.

My girlfriend and I have been making the breakfast rounds for a couple months, trying a new place every weekend.  This is one of the better diners.

The space is pretty basic/standard diner.  However, the booth where we sat was comfortable and every other seat looked like they were in good condition.  The carpet, seats, and table tops were clean.

The food was pretty tasty.  I had the hangover chilaquiles, the woman had the three pig benedict.  Both were quite good (we traded bites of each other's food).  As a bonus, the food came out hot and surprisingly quick; especially considering how well-put-together it looked.

Service was spot on: attentive waiter, but not obnoxious and overbearing; friendly hostess; clearly seemed like they cared that you had a good experience.

Gripes: seemed a little pricey, but was not over-the-top.

Overall: if you like a clean, friendly, tasty diner experience- this is your place.  Much stronger than any other breakfast spot in the hood (Marmalade, Lincoln Restaurant, etc.).  We will be back for more.

Nothing special. We thought it is overpriced for the area and the food they offer. No sides on the menu and the food had no distinct flavor specific to the geographic area they claim to represent.
We will not be back. There are better breakfast restaurants in the area.

I have been here multiple times and it's been amaze-balls.

    - The wait-staff is excellent, if not over-zealous in refilling your drink when it's less than 3/4's full. Be prepared to pee alot. The bathroom is nice though.

    - Coffee is solid. Better than most diner-type places.

    - Pancakes = gluten free since '93

    - Get the veggie hash.

    - Or the veggie burger (I'm not a veg-head, I swear!)

I've been twice and loved it. They are incredibly friendly and welcoming, give great service (as a former waitress I tend to notice how things go in that department) and the food is terrific. I had chilequiles w/ steak the first time and the brocolli-bacon hash the next. Both were so good and i had enough food for another meal when I was done. And they poured me a ton of great strong coffee. I will definitely be back regularly!

This new diner opened in the old Alps East space, it does look similar but they cleaned it up a ton - which was very needed. The staff and ownership is all new, and friendly. The food is excellent, although I thought all the prices were slightly higher than the average for diner fare.  I think they are banking that the quality of the food means they can get an extra buck or two per entree, and they might be right. We'll definitely be back.

We loved the Egghead! Just moved in the 'hood about 5 wks ago and trying all the new places we can - but by far - this is the best breakfast/brunch restaurant yet. The service, fresh food and variety of the menu was tops. Once we knew the chef was from What's Cookin we knew we were in good hands. Kudos to the chef and wait staff. We will definitely be back! thanks for being in the Lincoln Square area.

The staff, service and food at Danny's Egghead Diner left me smiling this weekend. I was in the area for a trade show and stepped outside to grab a bite for lunch. I walked up and down Irving and found this diner. From the moment I walked in I knew I had found a great spot. The wait staff was delightful and when I was indecisive between two dishes, they actually brought me out both (after I had only ordered one) and said they had just wanted me to try the other. So sweet. Both delicious! One was a tamale on special for the day and the other was their enchilada breakfast. Yum! Wish I lived in the neighborhood. I would go back regularly.

Went there for lunch last week excited to try out a new breakfast/lunch spot and found the Egghead Diner to be pretty decent but not great. Given that it just opened, I'm definitely willing to give it another shot. Its a pretty simple space mostly filled with booths and has a breakfast and lunch menu with a slightly mexican twist. I had a veggie hash topped with eggs. The hash was pretty good, but the eggs on top were overcooked, meaning that there was not that much yolk to run all over the hash. I did find the staff to be friendly and helpful.

First let me say: I know they have just opened and are figuring things out, and they are going to have to if they want to be in the same category as places like Glenn's, Over Easy or even Marmalade.

They have a decent menu but there are no sides! I had the mixed berry pancakes (which were good) and really wanted a side of bacon or sausage but there is no section to order this on the menu. I feel like that is something a diner should have. I like the set-up with the booths, but the decor is pretty bland.

My other issue was with the staff. They weren't very welcoming, they seemed afraid to talk to me and afraid to speak English. There was no music at all. They seemed very awkward. They weren't mean or rude at all, it's just that they were so timid. I did not see one of them even smile. They just did not seem to feel comfortable around the patrons of the diner. I live in this area and I feel that in general people are much more welcoming at other establishments.

I do hope they are able to tidy up the rough edges, I live very close and it would be nice to have another decent brunch place in the 'hood.

This used to be the old Alps East restaurant.  It still is, as they've done no renovation and removed the little touches that made it an old-timey diner.  So, basically it has all the warmth of a cafeteria.  Also, it's really quiet which makes having a conversation kind of weird and whispery.

The food was okay.  I had chilaquiles and they were pretty good.  My wife had a breakfast sandwich that came out like a BLT with fried egg in it.  She did not care for it.

I assume this place is still trying to find it's footing and I wish them the best but I can't give them a strong recommendation.
