Driven by this place tons of times, finally decided to actually give it a shot. I was thinking Moe's for a while, but wanted real Mexican food. Ordered the quesadilla's, tacos, burritos, and a dinner item to share around. Food was actually pretty decent and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We got the food to go and they did a really nice job packaging it all up. I would definitely recommend this place to people but it wouldn't take the place of El Cid or Spanish Tavern.
Review Source:New Jersey is odd. People here beat on the location, but it's very much in line with typical Mexican mercados. I actually really loved the feeling. The tacos, though, not so much. Carnitas and al pastor like nowhere else all on stale tortillas. I knew I should have ordered the torta! Carnitas were cubed and dried out as if they were sitting. The al pastor really was seasoned ground beef, but not a hint of any al pastor seasonings. The odd naming aside, that really was the best filling.
Anyhow, it satisfied a fix in interesting New Jersey.
I think this is the best (Americanized) Mexican food around. Â Made extremely fresh. Â I just wish they had real restaurant seating. Â Right now, it's basically a take-out counter with a few tables like you would find in a take out pizza place. Â The owner is hoping to get the business going well enough to move to a bigger location. Â I've ordered the take out half a dozen times and never been disappointed. Â Great, fresh guacamole. Â And the owner, who is always behind the counter, will make a dish any way you ask.
Review Source:I stopped here for lunch. There's some parking behind the place and meters on the street in front.
The place doesn't look like much - in fact it looks more like a deli at first. There's only a few tables...
The guy at the counter suggested a burrito; said people like their burritos. They have chicken, beef, maybe a few other varieties etc I had a chorizo burrito.
I can honestly say it was probably the best burrito I've ever had. It was perfectly constructed; just right amount of rice, beans etc. It really was awesome. Chorizo was just spicy enough not to require any salsa etc. I'm getting hungry as I recall the flavor... really good stuff
I might not be bold enough to order a more complex mexican meal - but the burrito is enough that I am dragging a co-worker there this week.
You have probably driven by El Azteca a hundred times. Â Me too.
If you did see it you probably thought it was a deli. Â Me too.
You probably thought.."where the heck would I even park?" Â Me too.
Well, I found out that they have an extensive menu for takeout or eat in. Â They have 3-4 tables in the restaurant. Â
The owner and staff are very friendly and eager to please. Â Everything is made to order and it takes a while to get the food. Â They did start us out with a complimentary dish of homemade salsa and chips. Â The salsa was outstanding.
Not knowing about the free chips and salsa we had ordered nachos. Â The chips seemed homemade. Â Lots of refried beans. Â I wish the cheese had melted a bit more.
My wife ordered the botana which was a combo of quesadilla and chorizo tacos. Â Unfortunately, the tacos were hard shell. Â The chorizo was pretty bland.
I had wanted to try the lengua (tongue) taco but they were all out. Â So, I ordered two chorizo tacos and a chicken mole sopes. Â Unlike my wife's tacos my tacos were on the small size soft tortilla. Â They were bland. Â I was really looking forward to the sopes. Â I had never had one with chicken and mole before. Â It looked great. Â But, was bland.
I just want to point out that my wife's botana did come with small containers of both red and green sauce. Â They helped out with the bland flavor issues a bit. Â
With Cinco de Mayo a very short ride down the road in Hillsdale I doubt that I would return to El Azteca.
