Ordered carryout ONCE after a colleague recommended but NEVER AGAIN! Completely overpriced and the food was bland. We work across the street and the food wasn't ready yet when I arrived (but it took a host a good ten minutes to even realize I was at the door waiting). When the food FINALLY came out in containers and I opened it less than 5 minutes later it was COLD. So the food I paid close to $18 for was cold, expensive, and BLAND. Should've gone to Chipotle instead
Review Source:This place is so close to getting 5 stars from me, but it just falls a little short. Â
Let me start out by saying that of the 200 Â to 300 restaurants I've eaten at in my life only 2 would rate 5 stars in my book. Â That's how close to exceptional El Meson is.
Sigh.
So close, and yet so far!
Let's start out with the good first:
1. Â They have the best fajitas in town. Â Our favorite, the Fajitas El Meson. Â Steak, chicken, shrimp, AND chorizo! Â A flavor explosion. Â And the fajitas for 2? Â Enough food to feed a platoon of hungry marines!
2. Â Every entree we've ordered has at least been good, most very good or great.
3. Â Big portions. Â You won't go away hungry!
4. Â Excellent decor and ambiance. Â Del Sol (did I get the name right?) on East Washington might have better decor and ambiance, but on certain nights El Meson has a guitar player going from table to table. Â Damn, I wish I would have gotten him to play "Tequila" and "Never on Sunday"!
The so so:
1. Â Chips and salsa. Â Not bad, not good. Â Just so so. Â Why in the h___ can't any Mexican restaurants in Indy serve salsa with some bang?
2. Â Service. Â On the whole, good, but I've had a couple that were eh. Â On the other hand, I've had one that was outstanding! Â He couldn't speak a lick of English, and my Spanish is minimal at best, but there wasn't a single problem communicating what we needed!
The bad:
1. Â The worst Margaritas in town. Â Chi Chis is 2 steps up.
2. Â They run out of Mexican beer often. Â When I'm having a Mexican dinner I want a Mexican beer. Â I want a Dos Equis, not a Miller Lite damn it!!
Quality - 1 star
Quantity - 1 star
Ambiance - 1 star
Price - 1 star
Service - 1/2 star
Total - 4 1/2 stars
Minus - 1 star for the bar
Overall rating - 3 1/2 stars
But so easily could be 5!
While this isn't my favorite place for mexican food-wise, their service is amazing. All of the waiters speak very good english and we went on father's day and all father's at for free! It was also my parent's 40th anniversary and they treated us to a free dessert sopapilla on the house on top of my dad's free meal. They are pretty darn awesome. Also, went here for my birthday and they gave me free dessert and a drink on the house. They are definitly one of the best places for mexican food in town. My entire family loves it and doesn't stop talking about it every time they come to town.
Review Source:STAY AWAY, FOUND RUBBER GLOVE IN FOOD!!!!!!
The food was good, good price. Nice drinks, however, when I brought my foood back with a latex glove in it (finger part), they tried to cover it up and acted funny when I wanted my money back. Whne I called , the person I spoke to already told me they used those gloves in the kitchen.
When I got there I told the manager what happened and he turned to the workers and said, in Spanish "Who told her we had these gloves? Why did you do that? Do you know who had the gloves on today? Do Not say Anything else!" Â
He turned to me and started to tell me in English That theyy didnt use those gloves and If I was sure it wasnt mine. I told him IN SPANISH (He didnt know I spoke the language,
"I am staying in a hotel, where would I get a glove. I heard what you said to the workers. Give me my money back before I call the Health Department, the News staion AND the Newspapers. Next time do not think that all Peopel who are not Hispanic do not speak the language. You never know!"
The whole staff jaws dropped when they heard me saying this is spanish and thier little cover-up was ruined.
BTW....I called the health department anyway. If they tried to cover this up, I am sure their practices are very nasty in the back.
My gf and I have been looking for a good, cheap, and fun mexican joint since we've moved to Indy. Â We had just about given up...after trying numerous failures. Â That is...until we came upon this little GEM. Â El Meson is the best mexican cuisine we have had since we've been here. Â The portions are quite large, but very tasty and the prices are undbeatable. Â Abigail is very picky about salsa and rice (because she is a vegetarian) and absolutely loves what they have to offer. Â Their cheese quesadilla is SO good and is not greasy at all. Â They can modify orders and are SO accommodating of all their guests.
I give them 5 stars!! Boo YA! Â They RoCK! Â Go in on Fridays for live music!!!!
This is one of our favorite spots in Indy. The food is incredible and very reasonably priced. I can also get a giant 32oz draft beer for $4.00, which you can't beat. Order the fresh guacamole and they will make it from scratch right at your table.
The first time we went was actually on a Saturday night for salsa night. We had an amazing time. It was packed, standing room only, and the dance floor was full the entire time. I hope this doesn't come off bad, but we were literally the only white people there. No one seemed to mind that we didn't really know how to salsa though, and we were laughing at ourselves trying to keep up with everyone else. We got there early for dinner so we didn't have to pay the cover, but at some point they started charging and had metal detector wands. Kind of reassuring but also a little weird as it makes me wonder if they had problems in the past. There was great music though and everyone there seemed to be having a great time.
Also, if you do decide to go on salsa night, it does have more of a "club" atmosphere, so make sure you dress appropriately.
We haven't been back for salsa night but eat dinner there at least once a month. The food is delicious and well priced, so do yourself a favor and stop in for dinner some night.
Good comida @ a good price. Â Colorful atmosphere for family & kids. Â Chicken fajitas exceptional with generous servings: chicken served separately on a sizzling hot skillet. Salsa chips were a slight disapointment: a little bit on the greasy-side. Went there for lunch so did not experience the night scene but the physical layout looked good for the salsa, merenge e.t.c. DJ music. Â Next time I vist Indy for the NCAA Final Four 2010, I'll pay them another visit.
Review Source:It's tough for me to review Mexican restaurants here in Indy. Â Growing up in Tijuana North (San Diego), I've got a pretty rigid definition of what Mexican food is. Â It's definitely NOT the Tex-Mex that you get here. Â Where are the flour tortillas people?
Anyway, El Meson is alright. Â We stopped here for lunch one day when my fiance was craving a carne asada burrito. Â The carne asada marinade is different from place to place, but it wasn't even remotely what he was expecting.
Corn chips, heavy salsa (more like sauce than the fresh tomatos we are used to), lots of cheese. Â I will say, for Tex-Mex, it was decent food. Â Oh - and the portions are gigantic. Â The place was pretty dead on a weekday around 11am, but it's decent sized so I imagine there's a big crowd some nights.
It's true that this place heats up for salsa nights each Saturday, but unfortunately I've not attended for a late-night party. I'll need to do that soon. But I have had lunch here a few times. It's a convenient, easy spot to go for lunch--especially if you have a larger crowd. It's great for all the workers out for a quick lunch break on the Northwestside.
I've had a few different things for lunch, but I always come back to my favorite, the chicken quesadillas. Chips and salsa are great here...seems very authentic.
Love the colorful dining room area--I'd like to sneak out the back with one of their tables and a set of chairs. It's a fun place!
Hot damn. Â This is the place to be if you want an upscale elite Latino club in Indy. Â The feel of this would rival any uppity dress-to-impress velvet rope Hispanic place in Phoenix or Chicago.
El Meson, a Mexican restaurant near the Pyramids on Wesleyan Rd., was down the street from my hotel and I spotted the spectacle this place is on Saturday nights. Â Towncars and limos hovered in the filled-to-capacity parking lot.
What would be an ordinary chain-looking restaurant transformed into a roped-off $7 cover charge sort of place. Â Curious, I rolled in to check it out, but balked knowing I was already wasted and didn't want to spend cash to get in only to drink half a beer and waltz (or salsa) into my hotel room next door. Â No idea what the food or restaurant is like, but the club looks hopping and incredibly popular.
