    One word: Yum!!!!! I(my boys)
I  want to pack up the place and staff and take them home to my neighborhood. (me)

I wasn't too adventurous on my first visit. I ordered the carnitas burrito smothered, and it was delicious! I love the beans inside, and the green chili on top was great. There was plenty of chili to sop up at the end. I will be back soon when I am craving some authentic mexican, and I will try the cabeza!

Fast service, although not exactly friendly.

We loved the authentic atmosphere, Spanish-speaking servers and cooks and flavorful food. My smothered burrito (vegeterian) had just the right amount of heat.

I am not as adventurous as I would like to be!  I came here fully intending to try tongue and cheeks meat but I couldn't dissuade myself from the safe and flavorful marinated pork tacos and chili rellenos.  The shame of chickening out is big so I must try again soon.  Maybe I will have to join in one of the infamous "taco tours" and build my courage.

Never the less, the tacos and rellenos were tasty and affordable.

This place is serving up savory Mexican ambrosia - it's that good.  If you're debating whether or not to give it a try ... GO FOR IT! Have a breakfast burrito with bacon smothered in green chili. It's incredible with a spicy kick!

Prices are more than fair, portions are more than enough! Try it out !

My co-workers have been talking about getting breakfast burritos from here before work (we open at 8:30am) however they do it every sunday when i don't work so i decided to go and check it out for myself. I tried what patty recommened the chile relleno burrito and i do like it. I had it 2 nights in a row and for some reason i found the first one i had a lil more spicier then the second one. Don't get me wrong i still liked it but i did noticed a difference. I also had the tacos i order los de asada y los del pastor. Los tacos al pastor were my favorite!!! I did take out the first night so i felt like that made the asada tacos be less good because i didnt get the sauce they put on top when you actually dine in so that was a bummer. As a Mexican- not Mexican American but just Mexican I love horchata and i know when an horchata is dam good and thats not the case here which made me sad because then it would all have worked out perfect!!! I guess i just expect mexican restaurants to have home made horchata since thats what i get when i go over to my grandmas. I haven't tried anything else to continue judging the menu but i will say i wish service was better. I still leave a tip because i always do when i eat out but the ladies working don't seem do care if we leave tips or not. Im not sure how they get paid there maybe thats the reason behind the service i don't know. i do want to try the rest of the menu though so i might be back sooner or later.

It's okay. Not as good as I was hoping... regular good beans & rice. Burritos are a good hefty size and the carne asada meat was a little too hot for my liking.

Bf got the 3 Taco meal... 9.90!? that's a little bit pricey... and the tacos weren't that big.

I don't know what it was... but it was just missing that extra flavor and yuminess. It was good, just not great....

Also, if you ask for cilantro... you'll just get a little pile of onions with cilantro sprinkled in it. So that kind of sucked... oh well.

To put it simply, I think this is the best Mexican food in Denver.

No fucking around, just delicious authentic stuff. My regular is to order a burrito with half lengua, half cabeza, smothered. They're the only place I know of in town that can cook lengua right. And the green chili is awesome.

I really miss living down the street from here.

I go to this place every Sunday. Best AUTHENTIC Mexican food in downtown! The prices are great, the food comes out FAST. Smothered chili relleno burrito with the green chili is the best! Their tacos are very filling and always come with a large portion of rice and beans. Just remember to bring cash :].

This has got to be my favorite home-cooked style Mexican restaurants in Colorado!  Five Stars!

The restaurant is owned by a cute little Mexican grandma and is staffed by many hard working family members and friends.  There are about 5 tables and about 10 seats at the counter.  The menu is written in both English and Spanish.  Tons of seleection - from burritos to tacos to enchiladas, and more.

I ordered the Pork Burrito, smothered in Green Sauce.  HEAVEN!  I got a plateful of delicious burrito made with rice, beans, pork, and it was topped (SMOTHERED) with the famous green sauce.  The pork was tender and juicy, and the fillers inside of the burrito went so well together!  I tried my hardest not to eat the entire dish, but I couldn't resist.   I washed it all down with home-made horchata!

After years of being told to go here for tacos, I finally caved in at the the suggestion of a trusted friend who is an Asian foodie.  Weird but I trust his opinion.  We got there 10 minutes before closing.  We played it safe and ordered marinated pork and beef tacos.  They were out of beef.  Our fault for being late night diners.  The two ladies were efficient and chatty but just not friendly.  Again our fault for being late.  The tacos were good, the pork well seasoned and everything, but it was lacking something.  I tried it with the cilantro/onion mixture and with salsa and had it plain.  Yep still good but not right.  I usually like cheese and lettuce on my tacos as well but I don't think that was what it was. For the price, it's an okay value.  I'll just have to visit again and again till I get it right.

    Scene from a Mexican restaurant:

White person 1 (Talking slowly while smiling way too hard): I would like un burrrrrrito, (she really rolls the Rs in burrito) por favor with just rice and beans.

Nice Mexican Lady Behind Counter (NMLBC): Smothered?

White Person 1: How hot is the chili? Does it have meat in it?

NMLBC: Yes it has meat, but not too spicy.

White Person 1: Never mind..just beans and rice.

NMLBC: Would you like onions and salsa?

White Person 1: Is it spicy?

    NMLBC: Not too spicy.

White Person 1: No that's okay then, but I will get guacamole with it because I am vegetarian and my favorite Mexican thing that is vegetarian is guacamole.

NMLBC (not quite understanding): Ok..then. And you sir?

    White Person 2: I'll have a margarita.

NMLBC: We don't have that here.

White Person 2: What is that then? (Points to green liquid circulating through a  beverage dispenser)

    NMLBC: That is aguas frescas..limon.

White Person 2: Does it have booze in it?

NMLBC: No it's like a sweet juice drink.

White Person 2 (to White Person 1): I told you shouldn't have come here. What kind of Mexican place doesn't have margs?

White Person 1: No, this place is really good. They are really authentic. Their refried beans, rice and tortillas are much more authentic than the stuff we can get at home.

White Person 2: Fine! I'll get that aqua whatever stuff and a couple tacos.

    NMLBC: What kind of tacos?

White Person 2: Lengua..what kind of taco is that?

    NMLBC: It's tongue.

White Person 2: Tongue?! That's gross. Don't you have like ground beef like they have at Taco Bell?

NMLBC: Si, we have cabeza tacos, they are kind of like that.

White Person 2: Okay..I'll get that.

    NMLBC: Okay..that comes to $9.45.

White Person 2: Don't worry babe, I got this! (Pulls out credit card from wallet and hands it to Nice Mexican Lady Behind Counter).

NMLBC: (Points to one of the dozens of signs that say "Cash Only"): Oh I'm sorry, we only accept cash here.

White Person 2: What kind of place only accepts cash?! This place is stupid. I'm going to remember this when I yelp about it later!

White Person 1: It's okay. I'll pay for it. (Hands over $10 bill). Keep the change.

    White people eat.

White person 1: Oh my god..these beans are so good. They are so rich and delicious.

White Person 2: Yeah, this taco is pretty good too. I wonder what kind of meat it is. This aquas stuff is good but it could use some tequila.

    White people leave.

    Julio: ¿Sus frijoles tienen manteca?

    NMLBC: Por supuesto.

    Julio: Muy buen. Son sabrosos!

    NMLBC: Gracias.

    Julio: De nada.

This place was recommended by a local friend.  We faced the challenge of finding cash to pay as we were unaware of the CASH ONLY policy.  There was an ATM across the street. (The Wells Fargo ATM down the street was behind a locked door, for some reason...)

The food was decent.  I ordered torta de milanesa, which was pretty good, but not the best I've had.  My partner ordered a burrito con carnitas.  The meat was sparse and the flavor somewhat bland. I would be up to returning to the restaurant to try other menu items, particularly the chile relleno burrito, which seems popular.  The aguas frescas were enjoyable.  The cost seemed fair.

Service was minimal, just taking your order and placing your food on the counter for you to claim.  Not much to speak of, but no complaints either.

I wouldn't eat here again if it was free. I can't say my real experience because yelp removed it already. We are in a world of censure ship. But trust me, avoid this place. All the good reviews are from people that didn't see what I saw.

"Taco bueno" as my boyfriend calls it, happens to be my favorite to-go place. I have basically had everything on the menu and love it all!

The tacos are great, all varieties. The burritos with green chili, fantastic. The green chili is the perfect spice level and good flavor. My favorite is the tamale plate. Yummmm. My mouth is watering just writing this review.

Gotta go el taco de mexico is calling my name!

Oh and cash only of course

A Denver treasure. Great smothered burritos--chili relleno or lengua are my favorites, but they are all good. Rich & heavy with just enough heat in the green chili. Don't understand folks who complain about the price. Most of the women I see working there have been there for 20+ years--and are always there, working, serving. The place is spotless and the food spot-on. Surely, they deserve $6 for a burrito.

Standing in line, I had a really bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. The kind of nervousness you get when you realize you have a whole night ahead of you and the outside of the restaurant looks like it has the potential to give you horrible heartburn and tummy problems.

The only reason we came here was because El Noa Noa had an hour and a half wait and I was hell bent on Mexican. No sickness, just deliciousness. I got the special burrito smothered in green chile. My friend got the tacos which were a little bit on the small side but the tortillas and their salsa are PERFECT.

Honestly, the only thing that put me off was how expensive their food is. It's only a little bit less than their neighbor, El Noa Noa, which is on the high side, but I never mind because you get the whole restaurant experience. $8-10 is a bit steep for having to pick up your own food at the counter and clear your own dishes.

As a Cap Hill resident who enjoys but doesn't lust for Mexican food there's a three way fight for my business between El Taco De Mexico, Los Carboncitos and La Abeja (shhhh).

El Taco De Mexico generally wins out because its close, classic and I personally like the vibe.  Now I understand the cash only, often odd smelling, to the point waitress and other aspects may put others off - but to me all of this just adds further characer to this place.

While here I'm either eating an assortment of 5 tacos ($1.70/piece) or a Chile Relleno Burrito (smothered of course).  For the tacos I'm a big fan of the pastor (nice spicy pork), cabeza (earthy meaty) and lengua (deep deep flavors) and though they're not Denver's best they suffice.

Is it Denver's best Mexican - certainly not, but El Taco De Mexico is still a great place that has deservedly excelled for decades.

I've been going here since I moved to Denver in 1999. It's authentic, good, the place is clean and they have very interesting choices... tongue, cheek, lip... Never tried all that - I stick with the basics and they're always good.

    CASH only.

My office is just 3 blocks down Santa Fe, so I am a regular at ETDM

I have to laugh when I see the snobby ho's complaining about cleanliness (It's VERY clean - every time I am there, if they aren't cooking, they are cleaning, but decor is not "modern", so they are just confused).  And then they actually judge this place based off of the other people who are eating there?  That's pretty stupid.  There are some really stupid Yelpers out there.

Listen, if you are a snob, then no, I don't recommend El Taco De Mexico.  It's run by about 5 Mexican women.  They don't talk much but are pleasant and hey, let's give it to them for running a successful business in America, where apparently it's impossible to survive, right, Occupy Protesters?  :/

I LOVE their Tacos.  Truly authentic and flavorful.  So freakin' good.  And if you are a fan of Posole, theirs can't be beat.

I'm a proud patron and I think it's great that  this little hole in the wall is doing so well.  Great job, El Taco De Mexico!

What is all the fuss about? Just because a place is filthy and outdated does not make it "authentic".

The guys eating at the counter with their hoods up, elbows out and hunched over their food like they were in prison made me feel really welcome. Don't worry dudes, I'm not trying to steal your taco. There was also a little boy who had to have whooping cough. I really thought one of his lungs was going to shoot out onto the table. I was covering my mouth and nose with my sleeve because I didn't know what I was going to contract while waiting for my food.

By the way, $1.70 for a taco isn't a spectacular deal, especially when the tacos are on the small side. We ordered beef cheek, beef, pork and chicken. The tacos were comprised of some meat slapped in a tortilla with some onion sprinkled on top. I guess the onion was supposed to be the salsa?

I took two bites and immediately got the worst searing heart burn of my entire life. I took one more bite before I decided these tacos were not worth the pain. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing(s) but I don't think I'll be back to try anything else.

Every time I go to first Friday I see a line out the door, now that I've stopped in I don't know why.
Service left a lot to the imagination.
Food left a lot to be desired.  I don't know if it's because I'm Mexican or I've had really great Mexican food that I wasn't impressed.
I had the chili relleno burrito=no flavor at all.  Chili was lack luster.
Brother had the carne asada burrito=meat had nothing to it.
Boyfried had four different tacos and the only good thing was the corn tortilla
Nephew had the tostada, he didn't finish it, had to order fries which he loved.
Mom had a bean and cheese burrito smothered=ok

I came, I seen and I will not be back

    Epic always
First time i came here many years ago and sat at the counter. A food inspector came in and did his inspection. He left and came back without his uniform. He sat next to me and we had lunch. Not only clean but outstanding and consistent. Year after year solid. Same team of women running the joint. Collective genius is amazing.

Food is great and seemingly more Mexican Mexican than American Mexican.  They serve a variety of tacos and burritos including tongue, tripe, cheekmeat, and al pastor.

The tacos are small for the price ( $1.70/taco) but the flavor is hard to beat.  I ordered a buritto that came out in less than 5 minutes.  The meat just melts in your mouth.  The size of the burrito is comparable to a Chipotle burrito, but the taste is so much better.

My friend and I also had some of those Sangria sodas...another hint towards authenticity, even though it's a bottled soda, it's one the type that you would find in Mexico.

The only drawback is that you have to pay with cash- they don't accept cards or song and dance.

Taking Yelp's advice, I decided to try this place to mix it up a bit. I live in LoDo, and very rarely feel the need to drive to eat out. But after trying El Taco De Mexico, I am convinced that I will be back soon.

We ordered tacos, a quesadilla, smothered chicken burrito, and chips and guacomole. All entrees were absolutely delicious. For under $20, you really can't go wrong. The price is right and the food is authentic and delicious.

They also have an awesome outdoor patio where you can sit, relax and enjoy their food. This is a good place to come after the sun goes down and it cools off a bit.

came here on a Wednesday afternoon after a killer mtb ride on the front range so I was starving! The menu is up on a huge board above the counter and I was spoiled for choice so I asked the lady what she recommended. She suggested the Taco Plate which I got and Mtn Dew to drink. I was asked if I wanted onions and salsa, I said yes. Cost was about $11.
Food came out fast and it looked so good I took a pic :o) The salsa had a real kick and I got some extra to pour on the beans and rice. Next time I will try a chicken burrito or maybe the chili relenos because I will deffo be back!

For righteous First Friday burritos covered in green chili and tacos to die for, I highly recommend El Taco De Mexico.

Sure, it looks like an overgrown taco stand, but that's just why it's so damn perfect. It almost feels like you're in Mexico again, plus you're surrounded by a festive community of artists, musicians, and youngin's looking for a good time.

If you want a good Mexican fix, this is the spot. Probably one of my favorites in the area so far, especially since it's so damn cheap. I'll keep looking around, but for now, this place takes the crown in Mexican grub goodness.

I've been there a couple of times, but I'm not a big fan. They have descent tacos ( I usually get al pastor, tongue, and cheek tacos), but not anything you couldn't find at any random street cart in Mexico. The only difference is that you will wind up paying about $14 for 4 tacos. As far as I'm concerned, the only good thing about the restaurant is the fact they serve horchatas (delicious Mexican beverages).

Tip: make sure you bring cash as they do not accept credit cards.

Pretty good! Not bad. A-Ok, indeed. I stopped in here earlier this week totally in the mood for some tacos, and sampled the carnitas and al pastor varieties. They were okay (on the small side) but I wasn't blown away by any means. Also tried the chips and salsa - and the salsa is the real winner here, extremely spicy and burny.

It's easy to be intimidated by their menu, which takes up the half wall above the serving counter. Everything is listed in both Spanish and English, which is helpful for a gringa like me. Give yourself a few minutes to take everything in, and you'll be fine. This place definitely has a worn-down feel to it, which you wouldn't necessarily expect seeing the super bright and colorful exterior.

I'm told their burritos and green chile are the way to go, so I'll try those next time. By the way, the pina aqua fresca does nothing to quell the burn from the spicy salsa - go for the horchata instead!

    Note: Cash only. Be prepared!

Have you ever been in a foreign country and wanted something really bad? And you just knew that when you asked for it, the person you were asking wasn't going to be mean, but that you were going to feel dumb because you were positive that you were going to say it wrong, even (especially) if you were trying to say it in their language? That's how ordering at El Taco de Mexico feels to me. But, it isn't a bad thing. That's just how authentic this tiny Mexican restaurant is, right down to their tongue tacos.

And, honestly, their food is worth me feeling silly for a few moments. It's delicious with that slow burn that you get in your mouth just after the food has made its way into your belly.

The space is small, with about 5 or 6 booths to sit in while devouring your food. So get in, get out, make your tummy happy and then make room for someone else to do the same.

El Taco de Mexico is turning out to be one of my favorite places, so had to update my review to say why:

I take spinning a lot. On the weekend if I have an REALLY hard class, I come here for breakfast afterwards and destroy all the benefits of exercise. Why? B/c this place is f'ing delicious and hits the spot when I am depleted. Don't give me a Gatorade, give me lard and tortillas.

There are a LOT of people here in the morning, it's a little surprising - you'll be fighting a crowd if you get here after 10:30am. Burritos are huge and are the best deal. Chiliquiles cost more than you'd expect but are my favorite menu item. I like to sit at the bar and watch the old Mexican ladies stir up some tasty ass food. Then I go home and take a nap. Yes...I'm a sloth.

Brush up on your Spanish before heading to this Mexican eatery. This way you might truly know what your meat options are.  I like trying different foods, but I didn't feel like biting into something that could taste me back.

Small soft tacos with just the right amount of filling.  The marinated pork didn't taste marinated, just swimming.  The beef taco was pretty damn mouth watering.  If I had more cash on me (they only take cash) I may have tried a few other items.

The lady behind the counter seemed annoyed by our presence. Rude, abrupt while we were ordering, no eye contact and frownies.  When she got to the next customer she turned a 180 and was all smiles and jolly... maybe because they were Mexican.  No loving for the whitey.
