El Tarasco has good, cheap Mexican food and great margarita specials. The quality of food can be hit or miss but overall I'm satisfied when I eat here. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to go here but when I'm in the St. Matthews area, it's an inexpensive way to get your Mexican fix. The servers are all really friendly as well.
Review Source:Went here on a Monday night for dinner after a disappointing Mexican meal at another place the previous night. The food was very good and affordable - we ordered the carnitas, and a beef enchilada (beef tips) and ground beef taco combo. They served 2 types of salsa with the chips, both of which were excellent! The service was top-notch. Oddly enough, we didn't drink margaritas that night but we might just go back and sample their cocktails on May 5th along with some yummy Mexican food.
Review Source:We do not plan on coming back. Â Our attentive waiter attempted to fix our overly sweetened and under liquored margaritas, but failed. Â We ordered guacamole to go with our chips and salsa and it was just like the kind you find at the grocery store, pre-made in a pouch. Â Lastly, we ordered a quesadilla, and it turns out they were the size of a taco and the side of rice took up the remainder of the platter.
Review Source:Solid "nothing-special" Mexican fare with good happy hour deals throughout the week.
Would I make a special trip from elsewhere in Louisville to St. Matthews to visit El Tarasco? No. But since it's in the neighborhood, and I can walk home after a few margaritas or cervezas, it's a decent option when I want to gorge myself on chips and salsa, rice, beans, and some kind of meat. Â The portion sizes are definitely a good deal for the inexpensive prices.
I'm giving El Tarasco three stars under the context of it being decent Mexican food considering I was in Louisville. If i ate this food in NYC, L.A. or Chicago - I'd definitely give it a 2 star because i expect more from these cities.
Now, with this background in mind, the food was okay (not terrible and not great), it's inexpensive and the service is GREAT!
if you find yourself in the area and need a fix of Mexican food, this is a good place to eat at.
El Tarasco is a competent Mexican restaurant in a city that's way behind the curve on authentic Mexican cuisine. The "taqueria" style that is so prevalent elsewhere has only a few entries in town, more than half of them named Qdoba.
This is unfortunate as taqueria-style can stand some challenge and variety and defines a choice between whole and refried beans.
There is no choice about this at El Tarasco, if you ask they will look at you with puzzlement. So rather than ask why in the world they don't offer whole beans, I avoid ordering any platters with the dreaded refrieds.
My simple solution, and Tarasco's saving grace, is the Enchiladas Acapulco (shrimp, light cheese sauce, in corn tortillas). El Tarasco gets that extra star out of me after all due to this single dish.
