I was SO happy to see that Fat Lorenzo's has a restaurant in my new neighborhood. I was driving to S. Minneapolis just to get some.
The restaurant and VFW are tucked away and a little hard to find the first time.
The menu is great. The first time I went there, I was getting an assortment of sandwiches and salads. Everything was great. When my mom is in town, she demands Italian food - Minnesota has been hard on her New York palate. I took her to Fat Lorenzo's once, and now that's the only place she wants me to take her. I usually order extra so she can take some home to rural Minnesota.
Staff is friendly, food is fresh and delicious. This is a real winner.
I read the reviews and had to check out what a pizza place looks like in a VFW. Â I also really appreciate our veterans and hope that business here helps them.
Finding this place requires a good GPS. Â Bloomington chopped off 84th. Â So coming from Lyndale, it was a run through the Cub parking lot, then a drive around the back of Cub, through a roundabout and a right turn into the VFW. Â Then straight to the back of the VFW lot and there is a small door into Fat Lorenzos. Â Yes, we left bread crumbs to find our way back.
I saw the new wall that a reviewer talked about. Â The mural on it is awesome, reminds me of the other Lorenzos on Cedar. Â The space itself is a bit bizarre, it feels like an open room converted into a restaurant. Â There is even a gellato freezer in the room which you can hear every time it fires up.
We arrived at 5:00 on a Saturday and it was empty. Â Felt strange being there without anyone else. Â The waitress was there to take our drink orders then disappeared for around 10 minutes. Â In the meantime another party arrived and they went searching for the waitress. Â (It appears the kitchen is a ways away).
We were hungry after the long drive finding the place. Â The cheese bread was typical Lorenzos and very good. Â Sadly the pizza was very average, not at Lorenzos normal quality. Â It tasted old, cheese was hard and not that gooey/tasty consistency I am used to.
Service continued to be slow even though there were only three parties there when we left. Â Strange feeling in the place.
I like Lorenzos and hope things get better at this location. Â I recommend the Cedar location over this one. Â But as I started with, if the Veterans benefit from this, then it was worth the trip.
Was previously disappointed with Fat Lorenzo's Bloomington after a few bad experiences after they first opened. Decided to give them another chance and fortunately it was excellent. Have ordered a few times since then and it is just as good as the Minneapolis location, perhaps even better because the pizza is always cooked to perfection with the cheese just a little brown on top (The Minneapolis location will sometimes send out pizza under cooked). The only downside is the location at the VFW behind Cub Foods which is tricky to find. If you want an excellent pizza don't hesitate to call. I recommend meatball & pepperoncini
