I don't know where to start. There is so much to say on the subject of business people in America opening restaurants and food prep stores like that with no training whatsoever in food and no taste for it in the first place. They just want the money! In France such a business always starts with a chef, a cook, a pastry chef, a charcutier/traiteur making pates and preparing food. Here not only none of such people are listed among the staff but they care to list a "Director of Displays" and an accountant! There are no chef, no cook, no pastry chef listed. It's all people often total newbies toiling in the kitchen. You should go to France and look at what they are doing over there, not only at upscale places in Paris like Hediard, Fauchon, Lenotre but also at neighborhood joints. They should try the sandwiches at Carette. Listen they are clueless, their prepared food is terrible, totally amateurish. Amen.
Review Source:I love the salad here, it's the preparation and customer service that is lackluster. Â When they ask you what you want, they instantly forget what you said and re-ask several times. Â Often times the person asking isn't the one who makes the salad and they lose track. Â About every 4th or 5th time there I get a salad with one or more ingredients missing on a salad that's on the menu. Â Often I have to tell them what's in a menu-ordered salad (can't they just read the menu like I do?). Â Worse off, after stating I wanted grilled chicken, they charge me for it but there's no chicken in the salad. Â The topper? Â The senior person there always says to me, "Sir, you have to tell them you want chicken!" when she should ASK me if I ordered chicken in the first place (I did). Â Today I let her know I DID ask for chicken and she disregarded me, stating, "Yes, but you have to tell us". Â Extremely rude. Â Most of the people there are trying really hard, it's just a couple employees who you don't want making your salad because you know they'll get it wrong. Â It takes twice as long as it should because no one listens to your order (during busy times). Â If you stand there for a few mins, you can see the frustration on customer's faces as they grin and bear it. Â All in all though - the salads ARE fantastic. Â Luckily they've got a great product.
Review Source:Pretty inexpensive, healthy lunch option in the Merch Mart. They've got tons of fixens, dressings, and protein options to accompany your lettuce and overall the salads are pretty good. You can make your own creation of veggies, but don't take too long on it cause the service staff will def give you some additude.
Overall I'd def reccomend it, but beware cause they get slammed during that busy lunch hour and standing in line forever defeats the purpose of a quick lunch.
There are reasons that the line here is at least twice as long as every other place in the food court - the salads are really good and they take some time to make. So get in line with the rest of us.
I'm a sucker for build your own salads and this place never lets me down. A shit load of veggies, some protein, some crunchy wasabi peas, all done up chop style = huge, excellent salad.
I've had good luck with service too. I am generally here during busy trade shows and one of the employees is great at reading your badge and calling out "hey Joanna, what would you like?" It's a little silly, but it makes people feel welcome.
Given the size of your meal and what they charge for rent in the Mart, I think the prices are fair.
LOVE the salads here. You can either pay $8 (or $7, without meat) here for a ton of fresh veggies in a salad as big as your head, or you can go to another place in the mart and pay $7-8 for a bed of boring lettuce with like, 3 veggies of your choice, tops. I'll pick Foodstuffs every time, because I like that I can get a bed of fresh baby spinach instead of watery, dumb lettuce and I can literally pick every vegetable under the sun at no extra cost and I actually feel like I'm indulging...in a salad, I know. Who knew?!
AND, if you don't have time to stand in line for three hours, order online and save yourself the frustrating wait, because it definitely CAN take forever. (And that way, you can hem and haw over all the vegetables on your own clock instead of bothering the ladies and all the people behind you who probably don't even notice because they're on the phone, rude.) http://foodstuffsgss.com -- click "Order Now" on top, you're welcome.
All that being said, I really AM in love with the salads here, but the service I've received, especially lately, has seriously made me rethink whether I want to keep going there. I've had my head bitten off for asking for a different salad dressing than what I indicated when I ordered online - on the side, too, so all they needed to do was take back the cup of dressing they gave me for a different one. I've been reprimanded for arriving too early. It's kind of hit or miss, but it's not like I have to stay there very long, right?
But omg, those salads...
The salads are the sh*t, but chances are that your employer has not allotted enough time for you to score one at lunchtime. Â Do not show up thinking you can order your salad and then eat with your friends, who picked their lunches up from Haba Nero or Quizno's. Â Oh, you think you're smart? Â You ordered one and paid online and just have to pick it up? Â Ha! Â You still might be stuck in the register line for twenty minutes. Â Eff that. Â I'm getting Arby's.
Review Source:I liked (notice the past tense usage of this verb) how Foodstuffs offered a fresh lunch alternative to all the fast food in the food court. Â You can see all the ingredients right in front of you so it all seems fresh. Â They have their share of unhealthy comfort food as well if that's what you're craving, but I used to come to this place only for the salads. Â
Today I stopped by and wanted to order an early lunch. Â I approached the counter and asked a question about their selection of food (if they stopped serving breakfast or if it was lunch). Â The woman behind the counter, answered very shortly, "what do you want?!" Â The digital screens weren't up (that usually display the menus) and I scrambled to find a paper menu to find my selection (as I was craving something other than salad today). Â I asked another question as to what they have to refresh my memory. Â The woman almost chewed my head off with agression, "WHAT DO YOU WANT???!!!! i CAN MAKE IT!!!" sheesh, I just wanted to know what they had normally on their menu besides salads. Â how rude. Â Man and I wasn't DYING to eat here anyways. Â what a b!tc#!!! She was so mean, I almost wanted to cry. Â almost....
The salads are pretty great here with lots of options.
HOWEVER ... the service is crazy. Â Because I don't want to deal with the lunch rush I always do the online ordering which should make everything super easy and convenient. Â The online order form will warn you that your order will take 30 minutes during the rush so you should order in advance. Â I have no problem ordering a half hour before lunch and then going down to pick it up later. Â The issue is that even when they do make your salad that you pre-ordered (the other day i went down to grab my salad after 50 minutes and they hadn't even started making it) you have to stand in a ridiculous line of confused people. Â There is absolutely no order to the chaos in the check out line. Â They always just have other customers randomly standing around confused and staring off into space. Â What the online order form doesn't tell you is that after you wait the 30 minutes (or 50 minutes as i did yesterday) you still have to wait in line and watch everyone else's salads get made. Everyone in the line believes that they are next so a lot of times people are cutting people off, complaining and at times yelling at each other. Â It's madness.
The food is fresh, the dressings are great and the salads are large. Â I've tried a couple of the soups and was not impressed.
I will be going back to Foodstuffs because it's conveniently located in my building where health conscious choices are not abundant but for an $8 takeout salad you would expect a little better organization and service.
In the vast Merchandise Mart food court, this mixed salad and sausage grill place has a HUGE line at lunchtime. It doesn't move quick either...
I had the daily special salad of chicken and barley and it was good. Staff friendly. They can see the line!
But $11 for salad and water can't be a daily indulgence.
If your still trying to digest the McDonalds your secretly got in the mart last week than Foodstuffs will definitley look and more importantly taste like a fresh healthy dream come true. While standing in line your gaze is automatically drawn upwards towards the large hanging mirror which reflect every color of the rainbow and every fresh veggie you could ever want on your salad... including wasabi peas. true they are not really a veg but yum.
The line is usually long and the and does not move very fast based on the fact that there are like 50 ingredient options , be prepared to wait atleast 10 minutes for your healthy treat. This gives you plently of time to peruse the expansive menu of pre-made salads they have scrolling on the giant LCD Tv's haning above the counter or if your feeling more adventerous ponder what exciting mix of ingredients you will use to create your own salad masterpiece. Though I did notice today you can fax your order in to save time, genius, unless like me your decision is generally based on apperance and how delicious the salad the person infront of you just ordered !!
Two quick hints, ask for dressing on the side so you can choose the amt of dressing and ask for your salad chopped, much easier to eat !
Prices are resonable, portions are good, and everything is always super fresh, what more can you ask for !!
Pros:
-good salads
-healthy
-friendly staff except for one
Cons:
-too expensive
-long lines/long wait
Also, their cut off time to fax in orders is 11:30am, if you happen to fax in your order at 11:31am don't think you're getting your salad. Cause you're not.
Basically you need to know you want Foodstuffs at 10am and fax in your order then, oh! and then call them to verify (but before 11:30am otherwise you will get yelled at)
Have fun!
I like them, but i can get my salad somewhere else.
Foodstuffs downtown!
......well not exactly. Since this Foodstuffs is located in the food court at the Merchandise Mart, there aren't as many options as the other locations (hence the name "Sausages & Salads"). But this is by far the best choice in the food court, with so many options any time of day! Plus, everything can pretty much be made-to-order, so you know it's fresh and hasn't been sitting there all day. I love getting the "build your own cereal" when I'm there early enough for breakfast!
Had a place just like this in San Francisco, but would only offer a combo of 4 toppings and each salad ended up being around $10.... so I'm a little biased on the topic of how "expensive" this place is (not at all).
What you get is as many veggie toppings as you could possibly want - and you can even ask for extra - and lots of options in salad dressing (although they could use more reduced fat options) Staff is super friendly, which kind of surprised me for a food court. Made me want to come back again so other restaurants should pay attention.
1 star off because the line is long, but congrats to them on having so much business. I'll just try to come after 1:30 when I want fresh salad for lunch or utilize that pre-order thing.
The salads are out of this world. Incredible. They're also really, really big and way too expensive.
The magic of Foodstuffs is that you get to design your own salad with their multitude of ingredients. Its probably the healthiest place you can eat at the mart....as long as you only eat half your salad. Therein lies the problem. After paying $9 for a designer salad you certainly don't want any of it to go to waste. The salads don't keep very well so its not like you can leave half of it in the office fridge for the next day.
Foodstuffs would do well to offer a half salad for half the price. A $5 salad that I could still design would be amazing. I've suggested this and they point me to their garden salad for $5, but I can't pick my own ingredients on that salad and its basically just lettuce. No thanks.
The staff is really friendly and tries to work quickly, but the line at Foodstuffs is always out of control. It can take half hour to get your salad. That's fine if you're in line with colleagues, but if the people you're eating with go to another restaurant they might actually be done with lunch by the time you get yours.
They offer free snacks while you wait and have grape soda and root beer which is extremely important. Also, it doesn't look like it, but you can get free refills. 2 grape sodas is probably more than any man needs, but it's such a rare treat I usually indulge.
Overall, the food is great it's just over-portioned which negates any health benefits and the lines are really long.
The woman behind the counter has to be pretty much the most charming person who has ever worked in the food service. Â It was obvious that it was not her first day, as she knew all the ingredients and she gave helpful tips as I chose my own salad. Â
With that said, my salad was delicious. Â Either I'm a pro at picking a combination of toppings, lettuce, and dressing or their ingredients are just unbelievably fresh. Â Maybe both. Â
I'll be back.
+ Super friendly, patient staff -- likely the product of a divine miracle.
- There are 3 of them and a line 45 people long, snaking around the food court, chatting on the phone, demanding to know whether you're in line, then sputtering "Fuggin' a!" and so forth.
+ Ridiculously large selection of items
- No matter how few items you order on your salad, you always seem to get about a teaspoon of each. Try putting some broccoli in a teaspoon sometime.
- Simple vegetable salads (without extras, a side or a drink) are still $8 and nothing's organic. Perhaps I'm cheap, but $8 is too much for a conventionally grown lunch salad.
While you're waiting in line, poring over the huge and colorful array of offerings, you'll be thinking of that other place in the Mart that will sell you a salad of the same size and quality for a little more than half the price. But there will be no edamame in that one, sorry.
I go to school in the area and this place is a perfect option for eating healthy. And it's in a food court at "The Mart". Healthy choices and "food courts" tend to not be synonymous terms. You will pay a little for the salad but you are having it made to your specifications so consider that in with the price. Always quick service and the people are so so so nice. Free re-fills on the fountain beverage are also a nice feature. I always get mine chopped and sometimes in a wrap which both are delicious. Ingredients have always been fresh and flavorful. Two dollars extra for a protein is a little much but just load up on the beans and you're good.
