My husband and I stopped in one day on our way back to Charlotte. Â We didn't have any food, but the beers were great and the service was FANTASTIC! Â The bartender was very knowledgeable and was quick to offer samples of unfamiliar beers. Â I am not as an adventurous of a beer drinker as my husband, but the bartender got me to try something outside my comfort zone and it was delicious!
Review Source:Foothills is a popular local haunt, and it's easy to see why. A nice list of quality brews and a tasty pub menu. Our most recent dining experience at Foothills was over graduation weekend, so there were out of a number of the beers that I would have liked to have tried. While there are certainly lots of choices in terms of salads, sandwiches, pizzas, etc., there are no real blow-me-away standouts. One tip: try the fried pickles, you won't regret it. ;)
Review Source:I've been to Foothills on several occasions, and I have to say the 3-star description of "A-OK" perfectly describes how I feel about my experiences here.  I really enjoy the , the decor, the location, and the house-made brews-- the seasonal beers are especially good, but the food tends to be a bit salty for my taste.  I haven't had everything on the menu, so I'm sure there are standouts, but the vegetarian options have left something to be desired in my experience.  Service is usually prompt, but  the crowds on Thursday/Friday/Saturday evenings can cause result in really long waits.  I'll probably be back when I'm in town for a beer and to hang out with friends because the space and location is pretty spectacular!
Review Source:The beer is good with a nice selection, but the food and service doesn't measure up.
The building itself is nice with plenty of room for larger groups, but it might take a while for everyone to get their food with the slow service. The food is nothing special, just standard bar food. I haven't loved anything I have had there, but nothing has been horrible either.
The beer is good with a nice selection and rotating seasonal brews. They usually have descent specials also. Sexual Chocolate lives up to the hype and is worth a try when they have it.
I've eaten here many times and always find it an enjoyable experience. Their beer varies quite a bit, but I'd say that most beer lovers can find a brew they like. Hoppyum is a great IPA. Their food is a few steps above your average pub. It's nothing fancy, but most menu items seem to be made from scratch and it's generally done well.
My favorite menu items are the fried chicken sandwich and the fried pickles. The pizzas are surprisingly good considering this is not a pizza place. My husband is a big fan of the fish n' chips and chicken wings. Â Definitely try their house mustard...you can even buy a bottle to go, and you'll probably want to because the stuff is seriously delicious.
Their Sexual Chocolate is quite tasty, and the BBA Sexual Chocolate packs a mighty punch. None of their other brews do much for me. The Total Eclipse tasted like old, watered down coffee to me.
The premise of the bad review though was their nit-pickiness about not letting me rest in the bar, but even more so, not accurately informing me of that. I'm one who likes to go out for a drink, but would be perfectly happy to turn in after that. Went after work with some people...I was tired, they were still all having a good time, the BF included, so i pulled my classic move and settled in for some resting of my eyes. The hostess came by our table and said she was sorry, but i couldn't have my head on the table. Alright, that makes sense, they don't want drunk people passed out in the bar. Granted, I'd only had one drink, but i understand the thought process. So as conversation went on, i sat in my chair and closed my eyes. Didn't fall asleep, was just resting my eyes. And she came back and kicked me out of the bar. Really, that's all there was to the story. I wasn't being inappropriate. I'd ordered two food items and a beer, so I wasn't just sitting there as a freeloader. Others at my table still had fresh beer. I wasn't hurting anyone. I was just taking it easy, not making my BF leave early, just because I'm tired. I've rested in many a bar before without ever having a problem. If the first time she told me i had to keep my eyes open, and not just that I couldn't rest my head on my hands on the table, that would have been a different story entirely...still douchey, but at least understandable. But to KICK ME OUT OF THE BAR for closing my eyes without warning me first? Ha, ridiculous! This will be my last patronage here. But I'll still drink Sexual Chocolate.
I've been to Foothills four times. Whenever I go, the beer is great. The food and the service, however, are terrible every. single. time. You'd think I would have learned my lesson. After this most recent trip, I will not be back. I went with several friends (Sexual Chocolate was on tap), and we began with beers. It took 45 minutes to be seated, but this was not a problem, as they were quite busy. Upon being seated, our server asked for drink orders; we ordered four shots, in addition to water, and a beer. The server made multiple trips to our table without bringing the shots; she claimed she forgot about them. She never apologized for bringing my friend's beer much later.
The food is horrendous. I ordered beer brats with sauerkraut, fries, and rye toast. The brats were undercooked and slightly pink inside, the French fries were of poor quality and flavorless, and I didn't bother with the rye toast. I used the sauerkraut to remove the undercooked brat taste from my palate. My husband's burger was charred; the macaroni and cheese tasted like Kraft without the cheese sauce. One friend referred to the house-made ketchup as marinara sauce. Absolutely repulsive.
At the end of our meal, the server brought checks. My friend's check did not include his beer (which, as you'll recall, was brought to the table much later than the rest of our drinks). My friend assumed the beer had been comped, for this reason, and he provided his credit card within the check. After his card had been charged, the server returned and asked him if he "had four bucks," because she forgot to add his beer, and she didn't want to pay for it. (Throughout the meal, when she made a mistake, she asked, "Are you mad at me?" [Note to server: if you feel the need to ask, that's a problem.] I never tip below 20%, but this server didn't earn the 15% I gave. I do not advise going to Foothills, unless you're solely interested in beer. Do not order food. Do not expect good service.
This was definitely one of the classiest brew pubs I've ever been too.
The pub was spacious and well-decorated, just had an overall relaxed feel.
While my friends and I were there, they even had a live jazz band playing. The band was excellent, perfect for a quiet yet fun Sunday night out.
For starters I had the appetizer sampler with Onion Rings, fried mushrooms and fried pickle chips. The platter was truly excellent. The mushrooms and the pickles were especially good.
For dinner I had the Brewhouse Cuban, which is one of their specialties. The pork beer-braised and delectable. I highly recommend it.
The beer, of course, was specially of note. I had the Pilot Mountain Pale ale, which was a solid anytime beer. I also tried the Seeing Double IPA, and that was especially tasty.
If you have a chance to stop in at Foothills, it's definitely worth the trip.
Disappointed. Bait and switch! We went because we had a coupon. Upon arrival, we showed the coupon and were limited to a small expensive portion of the menu dispute the fact that the sandwich and pizza section was printed on the back of the coupon. The section that was not eligible to use with the coupon.
I don't like the dishonest business practices of bait and switch!
Mediocre beer and sub-par service. Is this the best Winston can do? Natty Greenes in downtown Greensboro is by far more superior than this place. I had the Salem Gold Beer (only because it was $3) which was okay at best. It did have a clean refreshing taste but lacked flavor. This bar never deserves 4 or 5 stars. Why? When you're beer prices are starting at $4-5 and can get as high as $9, there is something wrong here. Is Foothills Brewery in it for the money and nothing else? They seem to be thinking they are the only game player in town so they can charge any price they want. Who would have ever thought downtown Winston-Salem would have exorbitant rent prices on Fourth Street? It just can't be, it's the most affordable metropolitan area in the state!
Review Source:The beer is good and the food ranges from good to not so good, but Foothills only gets 1 star from me because of their TERRIBLE service. Every time I go, I have different but equally horrendous servers.
Here are two examples: A month or so ago, my family and I waited over an hour to get our food. Our sever blamed it on the computer system, yet other people who came at the same time or later got their food and left before us. The manager was very apologetic and took some money off of our final tab, but only after I demanded some compensation for our trouble.
Last week, our waitress was surprisingly good in the beginning, but then started copping an attitude with some of my male friends and then seemed to have disappeared for a large chunk of time. Lo and behold she was sitting at a table talking to some other employees. I practically had to yell across the bar to get her to come serve us.
Something needs to change at this establishment if they plan on staying popular with people who live in Winston. My friends and I avoid Foothills as much as possible for the very reason that the service is so severely lacking. In addition, the food is very overpriced for the quantity and quality. Over $10 for a chicken quesadilla?? Give me a break!
Mmmmmmmmmmm.... Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer
If you're diggin' the local craft beer scene, this IS your spot.
Appearance: It's a barn... a big hollow, raw space with a brewery inside. If you're looking for fancy, pretentious or even hipster... this isn't it... they do beer here, and they do it exceptionally!
The Beer: Homer Simpson would have multiple orgasms here...  The beer is the central focus here. There were 12 of us in our party, so we knew we were going to have to wait for a table... took an hour. But in that hour we were able to sample some crazy brew! Myself, I had 3 brews during my stay: Cottonwood Endo, Hoppyium IPA ( Their signature brew ) and a seasonal Pumpkin Ale that was one of the best beers I have ever had. Spicy, with hints of nutmeg & clove.. it was remarkable. Other in our group ( Excluding the lugnuts who ordered foo-foo drinks like chocolate martinis.. .ugh  ) really enjoyed the the Carolina Blonde and the Seeing Double IPA. ( If any of my friends go here and order hipster drinks, I'll disown you! )
The Food: The menu is definitely created to accent and pair with the many varieties of beer. Being a large group, we did the communal eating thing and ordered a lot of appetizers: Winners were Fried "shrooms, Baked Brie & the soft pretzels with dipping sauces. Personally, I love any restaurant that has fried pickles.. these were incredible! Â Main courses: When in the south, do as the southerners do... I had Cheesy grits with shrimp... exceptional! Other winners were the Buffalo burger ( Yeah, real buffalo ) Beer Brats ( For you carnivores out there ) and a really good Black Bean Cake sandwich -
We never made it to dessert..
Only negatives.. this place is loud... not a place for first dates or romantic dinners... and the wait was long...but we drank right through it like troopers!
Diggin' this place!
I should start by saying that I've only been here twice, however I've enjoyed their wares (beer) many times at various establishments around the region. Â
The lone time I sampled the food, it was good and worth another visit to try more.   I'd have to visit at night / after work to better gauge the atmosphere, service, etc.  It was quiet  / slow during both my visits and the company I was with made it an enjoyable experience.
The beer is good and can definitely stand on its own, and they have some super delicious seasonal offerings.
If I ever get back to WSNC and have the time I'll make an effort to stop in, largely for the beer.
Excellent brewery in downtown Winston Salem. Â Very good oatmeal porter and a really nice double-IPA topped it off for me. Â I didn't have a bad beer here and the atmosphere was quite nice. Some outdoor seating, and a nice bar.
As always in a new brewery, I tried the flight, but the find folks at Foothills clearly wanted to get me drunk because the flight comes with 6 SIX OUNCE beers. Â That's right, ladies and gentlemen, that's the equivalent of 3 12 ounce beers (for $8) in one flight. Â Now that's a great deal and all, but I do wish they would give us 4 ounce tasters instead. If I had a DD, however, well...I'd probably still be there.
We made an unexpected visit back to Winston Salem and it was hard not to come back to Foothills for lunch. If you eat a meal there, it could very well be the only one you'll need for the rest of the day, as it is very filling. They don't skimp on portions. I couldn't resist getting the grilled pimento cheese with bacon, and tomato for the second time. They had a one time special brew, a lager made with honey that went great with my meal. We had some friends that had not been before and I was more than happy to bring them to this fabulous place.
Review Source:Been here multiple times. Â Great place to grab a beer with co-workers, after work of course :-). Â They brew their own beer. Â Nice selection which includes seasonal brews.
The food is okay. Â I have had a few of their sandwiches and their ribs, Â I have not found any of the food items to be exceptional. Â Probably along the same lines as a Chilies or TGIF.
There are better places in downtown to get lunch or dinner. Â However, you will not find a lot of places better to get a beer.
Stopped in 8/4/12. Menu had varied selection. Ordered appetizer and entree and drinks all at first, since we had reviewed the menu while waiting for a table.
Waited another 20 mins never even got to taste the water. Poor service. We left . Stopped in at the hostess stand which was  right beside our table and checked out. Tables seated after us had received their drinks and apps. (different waitress).
Wanted to give it negative stars.
Beer was good. However, service was lousy and food had some bad low points.
The ketchup made in house tastes like marinara sauce. No problem though, if you can get the attention of your server, they have Heinz in the back.
Garlic mashed potatoes do not have any
Garlic taste and beyond that are comparable to boxed potatoes.
Cuban pulled pork sandwich. Toasted bread almost masked that it was stale. The sandwich would have been juicy had the chef not skimped on the pulled pork and ham.
High points were the beer, club sandwich, and macaroni and cheese side.
I give this place 4 stars mainly for their beer. The food itself would probably just be 3 stars. It has your standard array of choices--wraps, sandwiches, burgers, steaks, etc. Certainly nothing to cry home about.
The beer, however, is what I enjoyed the best. All of their brewed beer is $4 (great deal!), and I have yet to be disappointed. All of the IPA's and pales i have tried are great. I've been here twice now and both times a live bluegrass band was playing. Gotta love that. Winston-Salem is a frequent stop for me, so I imagine i'll be back here in no time.
Foothills Brewery is sort of a little gem in Winston-Salem. I discovered this place awhile back while travelling through on a project, and it was good enough to keep me coming back several times during during my two-week stay.
I am a big fan of microbrewery/resturants in general, because I love original, quality, craft beer. Foothills doesn't stop there. The beer is pretty good, and while the menu isn't necessarily one of the best I've seen, what you get is pretty. However, it's the little things that make this stop worth it. Â
As you are dining here, pay attention to the taste of the food. They pretty much do everything in house with the same "home-made" flair that they bring to their craft beer. This may totally sound off the wall, but try the ketchup!!! They make their own ketchup and mustard and it is quite tasty.
So if your passing through, Winston-Salem and your a fan of make-it-from-scratch cooking, give Foothills a try. It won't hurt if you also like good beer!! :-)
Good beer and good food. It was a busy night when we went (large birthday party and bachelorette party), but our server was great. He was attentive and made suggestions as needed. We thought the food was better than typical bar food. We had the fried trio, pizza, and brats. All very generous portions and all delicious.
Review Source:I have been wanting to try Foothills Brewing for awhile now and stopped in during my last trip to Winston-Salem. Â The atmosphere was nice with a modern contemporary interior. Â Would be a great place for happy hour. Â The food items were reasonably priced with several vegetarian options to choose from which is always greatly appreciated. Â I ordered the Torch Pilsner and grilled tofu with polenta cakes and german potato salad. Â As far as the beer goes, it was a really great quality pilsner. Â The food however was lacking. Â The tofu had a sweet syrupy sauce on top which I wasn't crazy about and the polenta cakes lacked flavor. Â The german potato salad was pretty good though. Â
I am not writing off the restaurant yet since the beer was good, but next time I go back I will definitely try something else to eat.
Reading other reviews, I think the consensus is...they know their beer, food not as much.
Most of the other reviews suggest a so-so experience and I would have to agree. The food is typical pub fare as you would expect, but not very good. I dont have high expectations for a burger and fries and yet was disappointed.
As far as the beers, I tried the India Brown (November seasonal) and hoppyum IPA. I thought both were solid and good enough to prove Foothills knows its way around a brewkettle.
I've visited literally dozens of brewpubs and what I found most disappointing was a lack of attention and interaction from the staff. It was a quiet Tuesday night so the staff had plenty of time to ineract if they wanted to.
All in all I found the beer was a good value considering price and quality, the food wasnt expensive but not good either.
So I came here expecting it to be incredibly crowded because it was a Saturday night at 9pm. Â Prime time for people to eat and then go clubbing or go drinking...
I wouldn't say it was slow, but there was absolutely no wait. Â
Here are the main points and some advice...
1. They only serve their own beers which sucks if you like a specific beer. Â (Try the sampler for $8 bucks! You get six ounces of 8 beers! Which btw, is A LOT of beer for $8 bucks!)
2. The food is decent but it's nothing spectacular!  Nothing amazingly special but nothing bad except my goat cheese salad...don't get it...the peppercorn crust goat cheese has a weird blend with the raspberry vinaigrette, but my fiancé had the wings and they were pretty good. My advice is get bar food not anything specialized because I'm thinking it is pretty hit or miss.
3. The ambience. It didn't have very much of anything to be honest. It felt bare and it needed a...je ne sais quoi.
So it wasn't terrible, and I would probably go again if my friends wanted to go but I wouldn't suggest it to friends from out of town and I wouldn't seek it out.
Stopped here on my way through Winston-Salem. The interior gives you a great feel and vibe you are in a brewery. The service we had was great - but the food was just ok; average bar food. I can't say they have an extensive menu either, so you're likely going to be going through your fried appetizer list for the most part.
I was only able to try one beer, but based on the brewery aspect of Foothills I think it would be worth a second chance to make a first impression.
Also, I went on a weekday in early June post lunch, pre dinner, so the place was dead. However, this seems like the kind of place that draws a crowd Thursday-Saturday in the evening and nights, so plan accordingly. I didn't happen to notice a parking lot, either, but street parking seemed ample and lots may be available nearby.
As you walk in you see a large open area with plenty of tables and booths. There is an upstairs area, I am not sure what is up there as it was closed when we visited. There is also a bar area that has several tables and a view of the brewing area. The actual bar area is very nice with lots of woodwork.
The wait staff seemed to be quite attentive, and knowledgable about the available beers. Service was quick enough, and we never seemed to have an empty glass. They do not seem to pay too much attention to serving beer in proper glassware.
They had about 5 or 6 beers to choose from (only a couple of which I found above average), and they appear to have a full bar. The menu is standard pub fare, not terribly interesting. I had the grilled portobello sandwich and fries, my wife had the club sandwich and mac-n-cheese. The food was decent, but uninspired.
Overall the place was decent, but I found it to be a little pricey for what it is.
I have only been to Foothills on three occasions, first off.
To begin, their beer. They only serve their personally-brewed beer, which is fine. I personally do not find this ideal, but this is what you should expect coming to a place like this. It isn't the best that I've ever had, but it is decent. I like the Salem Gold and their Hefeweizen. It doesn't knock my socks off, but I don't mind it. Every time I had been, it has been for happy hours. I will admit, it has grown on me as time has gone on. Many people mention stopping in at Foothills while hitting up local breweries. While this is not to say that Foothills is *bad*, it is far from my favorite. Any day of the week, I'd much rather have local beer from Greensboro's Natty Greene's, Little Rock's Diamond Bear, or St. Louis' Schlafly. If what I hear about Asheville's beer scene is true, I'd skip right over Winston-Salem.
For the sake of convenience as I work in downtown Winston-Salem and live very closeby, Foothills is great. Some people are not in love with their food. I will admit that it is hit or miss. I have had good experiences with their mushroom appetizer and several other entrees. It certainly hit the spot after a few beers. I will admit that it isn't all that memorable, though. I would never consider Foothills as a gastropub. Furthermore, I'd never go to Foothills strictly for the food.
My main complaint is service. I have never been impressed. They aren't as prompt as one would expect. To be honest, it isn't largely due to the crowds, either. I believe a prior reviewer mentioned this, but slow nights do not necessarily ensure improved service.
Their outdoor seating is streetside. This is pretty much the norm on 4th street in downtown Winston. I personally prefer a larger patio and don't particularly appreciate the exhaust fumes that go with this set-up.
I sound as if I really don't like the place, but I should be sure to admit that it isn't all bad. If you are in the mood for a local microbrew and are already local, Foothills is not bad. It has a convenient location. They have a reasonable (not large, by any means) variety of beers that will satisfy most tastes. Furthermore, if you don't want their beer, you can always go for a cocktail! It is an ideal location for a happy hour due to the size. The televisions are also nice during football season.
I'll be going back to Foothills pretty soon. I hope they continue with their current trend, and it continues to get better each time I go.
I'm surprised to see such harsh reviews because I really enjoyed my visit to Foothills Brewing!
While working at a trade show, my boyfriend spent the afternoon at Foothills Brewing and made friends with literally everyone at the bar. He has a knack for that. Perhaps he should have been working at a convention instead of me. But I digress...
I met him there after the show for a quick snack and some drinks. "Quick" turned into "long" because we were having such a great time talking to the bartender and chef. They were super friendly and attentive and talked to us about different things to see and do in Winston Salem. I ordered the fried mushroom appetizer and was pleased to see that I got a ridiculously large portion. (a little grease every once in awhile never hurts anyone, I say) I'm not a beer drinker, but I enjoyed the mixed drinks from the specialty drink menu. They were strong and refreshing after a hard day of work. Before I arrived, my boyfriend had eaten lunch and ended up liking the in-house created hot sauce so much that he bought a bottle to bring home with him. (the chef told us that they're big on making things from scratch - something I love to hear!)
I definitely think this is a place you have to check out if you happen to be in Winston Salem. I'm going to be in town again for business in the fall and can't wait to go back!
A few of us stopped in here to pick up a couple growlers and grab a bite prior to continuing our trek to Asheville. Â
Caleb, our server was outstanding. Â He kept our beers full, knew the ins and outs of the menu and was fun to talk beer with.
We grabbed a 4 top high top near the bar, and we started with a roud of beers. Â They had just tapped a bourbon barrel porter which I immediately requested a pint of, and even went so far as to inquire about a growler of. Â The pint came, but he said since they only had a keg of the porter he wouldn't be doing a growler fill. Â
I ordered a pub melt with a side salad. Â My table-mates all ordered their meals with fries. Â Their fries were house made, skin on and double fried. Â Crispy toothy wedges of potatoes with ample seasoning and crunch. Â My salad was crisp and fresh, the burger was cooked to order. Â The bacon was firm and crunchy, Â the provolone and cheddar cheeses added a little bite to the melt. Â The sauteed mushrooms and onions were flavorful. Â All in all the meal was great. Â
A couple pints, some samples of their Hoppium IPA and their Seeing Double IPA and we were well sated. Â
One unfortunate thing to my meal is that the side salad was a 2.00 up-charge to the melt. Â A little unexpected. Â
What I would up leaving with was a growler of their Seeing 1.5. Â A 50/50 mix of their Hoppium and their Seeing Double. Â
I'll be back to try other items on the menu - and ordering fries next time.
This place rocks!
Their servers (and hostesses) have just enough attitude to keep things interesting if you let them. The great part though is that they can read people (imagine that)! So if you come in not looking like you're here to party, they'll seat you promptly, serve you respectfully, and let you enjoy your beer in peace.
On the other hand, if you're game for a conversation the staff is hilarious, they're as attentive as you'd like, and they're full of suggestions, tips, tricks, and of course information on local spots in Winston-Salem.
My friend and I were here for a couple days (big thanks to the owner of San Antonio's Freetail Brewing for his suggestions on beers to try at Foothills) and couldn't have enjoyed ourselves more thanks to this awesome local brewery. The food is good (albeit probably not all of it is the healthiest stuff to eat), the beer is fresh, and the outside seating is the way to go.
Yes, we even took a couple pint glasses home.
Can I give 4.5? First of all...bring back the Duck quesadillas!!! This place is what I think of when I think of downtown Winston. Nice, refurbished 2-story brewpub. You can watch them brew if you sit in the bar. The place feels a little cold during the day, but that doesn't detract from the phenomenal brewskies and the good grub. The quality of the beers have grown by leaps and bounds since opening 5 years ago.
The food at the brewpub is good (stick with the sammys), but plays a distant second to the hand-crafted libations. Try the ostrich or buffalo burgers and the house fries. Yum! They make their own ketchup and mustard, incorporating their own beer in to the condiments.
Foothills doesn't bottle their brews, but they distribute kegs throughout the Carolinas, as well as Tennessee and possibly some of Virginia.
I recommend the following as "must try"...the Torch Pils, People's Porter, Hoppyum IPA, Pilot Mtn. Pale & Seeing Double IPA are all superb quality beers in regular rotation.
Seasonal releases that are also fantastic and extremely popular are as follows: Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout, Oktoberfest, Total Eclipse Stout, India Brown Ale and Gruffmeister Maibock. They occasionally brew an experimental/small batch of beer just for the restaurant.
To be fair, the Salem Gold, Hefeweizen, Red Ale & ESB just don't do it for me...but lots of people enjoy 'em.
What makes the beers so good? They're just so fresh and well-balanced. You can practically taste all of the individual components. It's not just good recipes, but quality ingredients and a great working knowledge of the process and equipment they have on hand. I'd dare compare the quality and freshness here to any of the top breweries in the country.
They do a lot of special events/limited releases that have gained regional and even national attention. They win medals at the Great American Beer Festival & The World Beer Cup. They collaborate with other brewers. They really do just make the best beer in NC and, along with the entire city of Asheville, are paving the way in growing NC's reputation as a phenomenal beer state, gaining ground on places like Colorado & California.
Cheers!
Had dinner on the night that Wake Forest was playing their second game in the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball tournament. Â Yep, they lost. Â Badly. Â Bummer, but my team (Michigan State) won the next day, so YAY.
Enjoyed the IPA and Double IPA. Â Call me Tigger, because I love hops... and high ABV.
I was really hoping that this place would be terrific, but the slow service was a big buzzkill. Â The fried pickle chips just couldn't carry the experience; although, they were very tasty.
Honestly, I originally gave this place 3-stars due to service, but as I remember, outside of our sucky server, our food was quite good. Â I loved the subtle uniqueness to the traditional bar menu.
They make their own ketchup and mustard. Â That's cool.
Seriously though, it's above-average bar food. Â I would just try to go when it is not so busy, so you don't sit around waiting forever for your meal.
So... the beers are good and the food is decent. Â Next time I go to Winston-Salem, I will be sure to go back here. Â Hopefully, I won't be around a ton of depressed people.
Foothills is exactly what I've come to expect out of most brewpubs. The Gordon Biersch and Rock Bottoms of the world have created quite a formula: quality beer made fresh in-house, solid menu of food choices like burgers, sandwiches, and hearty salads, and huge dining rooms that become loud and boisterous very quickly. It's a combination that I tend to like when I experience, but nothing that I really go out of my way for. I prefer smaller more intimate settings without the theme chain feeling that so many of these have. They're kind of like the new TGI Fridays, but not quite that bad.
Foothills is, for the most part, better than the chains. Or maybe I just think that because I'd rather support a local business. No matter, the beer was good and the food filled me up. Plus, they had sweet potato chips. And oh, how I love sweet potato chips!
They put our large party (10) back in a private room, which felt a little awkward, but was understandable. Our server was great and food came out quickly, just like you'd expect.
Foothills is a brewing company -- which is perhaps why you shouldn't expect their food to be outstanding. Typically the building (an old store or warehouse, not sure which) is cold and drafty and the wait staff is rather inattentive.
Sometimes the music is too loud (and on some terrible early 90s digital radio station) or too quiet (leaving the place feeling empty). I have eaten here a few times and enjoyed their salads and their custom pizza (had it with tomatoes and fresh mozzarella), but really hated the she-crab soup. My friends say that trivia night and beer are the best things about Foothills Brewing, and I have to agree.
