OVER-RATED OVER-RATED OVER-RATED
The owner was there when we arrived and was very excited to tell about her place. I chose this place because it was #1 in Trip advisor and Yelp.  I will have to say OVER PRICED.  The "home-made" cole slaw could have been out of a Tub at wallmart and been better tasting.  It took about 30 minutes to get our burgers and we were 2nd in line. The Brie burger was average tasting. Nothing special. To say that the bun wasnt even toasted.  I will say that the young man who was tending to the tables was hard to understand and a bit snippy when  I asked him what he was saying. I dont know what the movie posters on the wall had to do with a burger joint.
I went here as a last minute choice and it was based on the large number of positive reviews. I was skeptical but figured what the heck.
I was greeted immediately and asked if I had been there before and when I said I had not they showed me where to order, the specials on the board, etc.
I was then greeted by Richard Gilbert who took my order and when I told him I heard about his place on Yelp he was truly appreciative. He asked where I was from and I told him Boston and it turned out he is a big Boston Celtics fan and don't hold that against him you Celtic haters :) .
I ordered the Godfather burger with sweet potatoes fries and both were very tasty. While I was waiting for my order Richard brought over a bowl of soup that the chef just put together and it was delicious (ginger based).
The person who brought me my order was extremely friendly and we talked a little Celtics and Lakers.
There are a lot of choices in this plaza where they are located but you will not go wrong to visit them. They are proud of their business and it shows. The restaurant is very clean. More independent and chain restaurants could learn a thing or two about customer service from these folks. Â
When I am back in town in the future I will be back.
We ate here because of the high number of good reviews on Yelp.  Unfortunately, this  is one of those cases where you're thinking...WTF were those Yelpers high on crack?
The food itself is just OKAY, meriting 3/5 stars. Â Yes, the yam fries are good but if you dunked a dirty gym sock in oil, fried it up and sprinkled salt on it, people would go ape shit for that too.
I'm docking another star for it being overpriced. Â My GF and I had 2 combo burgers, she got the goat cheese something and I don't even remember what I got...it was that exciting. Â Anyway, add a Corona to that and ding ding ding...$37 sir (and they ask for prepaid tip...another WTF??? Â I wish I could ask my boss to pay me BEFORE I worked).
One last star docked for service and grimy bathrooms. Â Maybe they were having an off day, but I don't think I'll be going back to find out. Â At almost $40 for two hamburger meals? Â Uhh, I think I'd rather stick my head up Sally Struther's ass and try to find a doughnut to eat.
NOT ONLY DID WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY THE BEST BURGERS, WE ALSO HAD THE BEST FOOD, FRIENDLY SERVICE AND FUN! It really was our first stop after landing in FL! We CA natives were not sure if this place would live up to revues, but it topped em! My daughter found  this family owned place and we had a grand time deciding on the burgers!  Great and different choices, excellent ingredients, including prime Angus beef...super nice family and friends who work there! YOU SIMPLY MUST GO!
Review Source:Hands down the best burger I've ever had. I went on the evening of New Year's day after a pretty aggressive NYE night to pick up some to-go food.
The dining room was packed. The tables that weren't in use had "reserved" signs on the tables.
The menu offers lots of options & we tried a fair share of it. We had the wings, the bacon brie burger, the ribs, a salad and a piece of key lime pie. (yes, that hungover).
Every thing we tried was outstanding. I was even given a free beer while I waited since I didn't call ahead. Great customer service.
--3.5 stars--
Gilbert's is a great burger joint with friendly service and an extensive menu. Their specialty is burgers but they also had a variety of other sandwiches, salads, and grill selections. I ordered the bacon, brie, and fried onion burger with lettuce and tomato and thought it was delicious. It was more on the medium well side although I ordered it medium, but I feel like that happens a lot with burgers and I probably should have asked for it medium rare. The sweet potato fries were also very good. However, the cole slaw was just average to me, and my biggest disappointment was that they were out of key lime pie when we got there! I was so excited to get a slice my first day in Florida, but alas, no luck :( I guess it was that good that I'll just have to try my luck next time I'm in Ft. Lauderdale!
What's all the fuss about?
We thought it was good, not great. Besides the sweet potato fries. Those were darn delicious.
Not much for vegetarians so I ordered the veggie sandwich. It was one of those comically big sandwiches that you have no chance of actually fitting in your mouth so I resorted to using a fork and knife. It was aight. The boyfriend said his burger was pretty typical, too.
The goat cheese burger I had was delicious, and the ribs which I sampled were fall off the bone and very tender. The staff was unbelievably friendly and attentive - almost too much so considering it's an order at the counter type of place, but I don't think that's something to complain about!
I wish they had one of these places where I live!
I'm a beer and burger kind of girl.
I'm picky with my burgers, but the thought of Gilbert's makes me salivate. I got one of the specials, the Havarti Bacon Burger on a toasted garlic english muffin. The burger was thick and juicy, havarti melts nicely, and the garlicky muffin added great flavor too.
And bacon. Yes, I'm one of those fanatics.
The only negatives were that the english muffin got pretty soggy from the juicy patty and some freshness would've helped balance the burger out (even just some lettuce).
I'm also a sucker for sweet potato fries and the ones here were delightful. :)
Great food and very friendly staff. I'd definitely come again next time I find myself in Ft. Lauderdale.
When I'm out of town on business, I rely strongly on Yelp for recommendations. My mother and I stopped in here for lunch in hopes that Le Macaron Cafe was open and after seeing the amazing reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately, Le Macaron closed up shop. But we weren't disappointed in any aspect by Gilbert's. The owner was extremely warm and friendly. He mentioned he used to do catering in New York. I ordered the Godfather per his recommendation. My mom got a standard burger. My son got a hot dog. We were all satisfied with our food! It was great in price. The burger was juicy and delicious! The fries were crispy and fresh. The service was impeccable! I wish this place were close to home because I'd definitely be back. Sadly, it's about five hours away...
Review Source:I can see why Gilbert's is the go-to place for burgers. There is such a large and appetizing menu that it took me forever to finally decide. I went with the Mushroom and Grilled Onion burger, medium rare. The portions are huge and they come with a side of coleslaw, fries, or sweet potato fries. The sides were just OK (the coleslaw was too dry for me and there was nothing special about the fries), but the burgers were delicious! I'd definitely return if I was in the area and I want to try the Key Lime Pie.
The family (son and mother) were very friendly as well. They definitely know how to run their business and make their customers happy.
I selected this restaurant to have dinner with 11 people in our party. Â I called ahead and the owner was more than willing to accommodate our party with a reserved table. Â The food looked amazing. Â As we entered the owner got our table ready. Â They were very friendly and accommodating. Â That's when my brother stepped in and said we're leaving as he wanted to eat elsewhere. Â As we left several patrons told us we didn't know what we were missing by leaving. Â If you are in Ft. Lauderdale I would give it a shot. Â Way too many excellent reviews for this place not to be amazing!
Review Source:My husband and I stopped after seeing all the great reviews on yelp. Atmosphere seemed like a great spot to stop and have a beer after shopping at the Galleria Mall. We were a bit disappointed at how casual and brightly lit the place was. We stayed to eat anyway. We ordered a Brie burger and a cheeseburger. Both were good, not great. We are not impressed with big being better. It's a bit hard to eat for those of us that don't have to have it big for it to be good. Quality over quantity too. The burger was good, too big and in our estimation...overpriced. The sweet potatoe fries are a nice touch. We also were not excited about having to stand in line and pay and then sit and wait. The waitress got our ketchup and mustard..wierd. We were then obligated to leave a tip for just that because we never saw her again. We had to make the line to get another beer too. They pour the beer at the counter out of the bottle and you have to walk to your table with the beer dripping on the floor. Another wierd point.
For a burger and better atmosphere we prefer Beer & Burger Joint in Miami.
Big time fan of this place after my first time there today!
I would just like to mention that as we were in line - the owner was sincerely thanking the customer (a regular) ahead of us for his business and wishing him a happy holiday topped with an "I mean it, we really appreciate you - you've been with us for 4 yrs!" Automatically was in love with the way this family operation is run and the people that run it.
You grab a menu and order at the counter (they do offer a daily soup selection and a few specials as well). They give you a number and the food is delivered to your table after you've helped yourself to a drink from the fountain and what not. The service was perfect. Started with a "How are you and first of all Happy Holidays" (Is this place real???) They leave you with a fork and a knife, napkins etc...ask if you would like any condiments, and EVEN refill your drinks at the self serve fountain for you...I mean...REALLY???? These guys were total gentlemen.
I got the Havarti bacon burger on an toasted garlic english muffin and OMG delicious. Cooked perfectly medium just like I asked. Sweet potato french fries were just under the level of what I imagine a crack cocaine addiction might be like (and I ate way too many). My friend got some sort of a burger on special with BBQ sauce stacked with cheddar and onion rings - she loved it. Â
We took a 'to-go' order back to the office for a friend...cream of mushroom soup and the grilled salmon with dill sauce. thumbs up and thumbs up. We will DEFINITELY be back!!!
So is it a requirement for all of Ft. Lauderdale's top restaurants to be located in random strip malls? I'm being serious.
Son Gilbert greeted us a the door and explained how it all works. Sister's on the grill, Mom's helping out everywhere. "We are a family business and we want to give you the best experience possible." Ummmmm, exsqueeze me? Did I just hear you right? Completely refreshing.
When I started questioning him about vegetarian options, Momma Gilbert stepped in and took over. "Look, we can make you basically any sandwich you want", she assured me. That's what I like to hear!
I decided upon the grilled vegetable sandwich (minus the portobello) and bf got the burger. He said it was top 3 burgers of his life. I decided that this was the best (and maybe the first) grilled vegetable sammy of mine. I had to LITERALLY push the plate away so that I would stop gorging on the SP fries. This was, of course, after eating twice as many as I had originally planned.
Come to Gilbert's for delicious food and the best service you've ever had!
I just had a burger last night, but there were so many rave reveiws and even a sign in the window telling me that these were the BEST burgers in South Florida. I couldn't not get a burger! Was this the best burger I've ever had? Nope - But I could see it being the best burger in Southern Florida (not that I'm an expert by any means, I just mean it was quite good). It was a very thick burger (like 1" thick) but it was so so juicy and flavorful. I got the Havarti and Bacon Burger on a Grilled Garlic English Muffin. In my head I was thinking I'd be surprised if I could tell that the english muffin had garlic on it, and I was so wrong. It was such a great mix of flavors and you could definitely taste (but not overwhelmingly so) the garlic! Would highly recommend getting the sweet potato fries on the side - perfectly crunchy and salty.
They did the set up pretty well - you go up to the counter to order, then you are met by the food runner who asks you if you want any condiments (nothing surprising, just ketchup, mustard, and mayo....I thought he said special mayo and thought they had special flavors and got all excited only to embarass myself as that is not the case) and will get them for you and bring them to your table with your silverware. Its a nice extra touch for a walk up and order counter place. Made it feel a little bit more service friendly. They even came by and offered to fill up my self service pop that I was drinking.
All and all it was a great little place to go get lunch. Nothing too impressive on the inside, but it felt very casual and relaxed. If you are looking for a fantastic burger, give this place a try!
A real gem. Â Greeted by the gracious owner at the door. Known for burgers, we had great spicy salmon and ahi tuna. Â Modest wine and beer selection. Family owned and operated with very friendly service. Â Home made cheesecake was A+. Â Very cost effective. Â We ate here twice on our vacation - enjoyed both times. Â Casual, cost effective, great food. Â Had a delicious burger the second time, my wife had a very fresh spinach salad. Â Sweet potato fries very tasty.
Review Source:An absolute gem!! I came to Ft. Lauderdale for a workshop this week and thankfully found Gilbert's - a casual family-owned restaurant. Walking in the door the first time, I was treated like a regular (and the second day they remembered me!). The food was fresh, perfectly prepared, and the service was outstanding all around.
I travel for work a lot, and it is rare to find a place like this. I was very happy to support a family business that prepares fresh foods and seems to care for customers and employees alike.
What a wonderful find in the Harbor Shops near SE 17 St in Ft Lauderdale! Â The owner, Lenore, met us personally with open arms and introduced us to her restaurant filled with a good variety of entrees, healthy soups, salads, grilled vegetables, fries and her delicious, homemade desserts.
The staff kindly takes the orders and serves everyone at their chosen tables. Â It is a relaxing, casual atmosphere. Â And the food is just incredibly prepared from the carrot ginger soup to sweet potato fries and baby back ribs marinated to perfection. Â Please do not forget to order one of Lenore's desserts. Â We had her key lime pie, the best ever!
Everything tasted great and we were contently full. Â The owners were extremely gracious.
We definitely plan to eat there next time that we visit Fort Lauderdale. Â You will not be disappointed!
I was tried of eating Mexican and seafood so I decided to give this place a try based upon an old recommendation from a rep at AT&T (which is next door). Â
Arrived at 2ish, place was somewhat busy, lunch rush is over so it was to be expected. Â Reviewed the menu and decided to go with the special "spicy hot burger with pepper jack cheese and bacon...hottest burger in the south". Â I LOVE spicy hot food...I'm addicted.....so I had high expeditions since they said it was the hottest burger and I chose that over the Louisiana burger that is suppose to be Cajun spicy.
Set up is a upper scale fast food joint...like 5 guys. Â I didn't like the servers bringing the condiments...I can get it myself...but the guy was really nice so ok...
Burger was extremely disappointing...awful as a matter of fact....it was a $12 burger with pepper jack cheese and bacon....nothing spicy and nothing special. Â I was so upset..I wished I would have chosen Five Guys instead! Â The fries were delicious...not the damn burger!
I read in another review that you don't have to tip the severs/wait staff.....um yes you do! They are technically serving you...you paid 16 bucks for a burger (an awful one), fries and drink...put 2 bucks on the table for the poor guy/girl running for you.
After I finished, I got up to leave and just left...now everyone before me was told "goodbye and thank you"...Not me....
So as I made it outside, and older gentleman was reading the reviews posted on the windows ( I wish I had bc it recommended the Brie burger....I suggested to him NOT to try the specials, looks like you should stick with the burger featured and I also told him I did not enjoy my meal.
It was nice to try something new...I MIGHT go back for the Brie burger...but to drop that amount of $$ on a lame burger, I will stick with ROKBURGER.
2 starts for the attentive server and the fries were good.
We stopped through here on an overnight stay after a cruise, as it was walking distance to the hotel. Â What a find! Â Walking in, we saw the "best burger in south Florida", and as a burger lover, definitely piqued my interest.
I don't remember the name of the burger I tried, but it was a burger on an english muffin with havarti cheese, and it was fantastic. Â Throughout our lunch, the owner's family came and talked to us, told us about their business and family, and really gave us a memorable experience. Â If we are in the area again for another cruise, this will definitely be a stop.
Overall - good burgers, good fries, extravagant desserts, and warm company = an easy 5 star rating. Â Keep it up guys.
Gilbert's has excellent hamburgers! In no way do they even compare to Five Guys. They cook to order and have great sweet potato fries. I've had a variety of burgers and sandwiches, all have been great.
The deserts are great! I love the Key Lime Pie and the Cheesecake. The seating area is super clean. The service is good and the owners are very personable. Also they don't rush you to eat. I was with a group and we were here for over 2 hours, never rushed out.
We have spent about 4 weeks in the Ft Lauderdale area and have visited Gilbert's 6 times.
The service is the best I have ever experienced in such a casual environment. Â The food is exceptionally fresh, flavors are always spot on. Â Try the salmon with Asian slaw, my wife claims it is the best she has ever had. Â Burgers are great as well. Â Best of all when you go to Gilbert's you feel like you are supporting the hard work of a nice local family that cares about it's customers.
Gilbert's is a little hard to find. It's tucked away in the Harbor Shops of Ft. Lauderdale which is not on 17th street at all. The address is actually 1821 Cordova Road.
I've been there a few times for some family events and was pretty satisfied with the food. But my son sent me a picture of a burger that he enjoyed there and suggested that I stop by and sample one.
Michelle and I popped over the same night that the Miami Heat was playing and there were tons of people standing in line at Duffy's across the parking lot. Gilbert's was very busy also but we were still able to get in and order pretty quickly.
When you enter you go to a counter and place your order which is prepared and then delivered to your table. Our order taker introduced himself as a member of the Gilbert family and said "nobody takes better care of you than family." I was already quite impressed and when I asked "what is the best hamburger to order," he replied with no hesitation, "the brie burger, with bacon and fried onions."
I added an order of fries and Michelle ordered a jumbo kosher hot dog with fries and a couple of self serve fountain drinks. Michelle thought her hot dog was average but complained to me about the fries. She thought they were too greasy and a little "rubbery."
My hamburger was amazing! Cooked perfectly with all the components piled on top. I thoroughly enjoyed it and vowed to be back soon.
If you are in the mood for a great burger I highly recommend Gilbert's 17th Street Grill.
Wow, what a great find! Â The owner greets you with a smile, joke around and have a great time. Â And the food...so friggin good! Â The burgers are off the hook! Â Top quality meat, fresh produce and killer sweet potato fries (with a side of ranch please.)
This place is definitely a must-visit on your next trip to Ft. Laudy!
