so here's how my phone order conversation went:

me: hey do you guys deliver to (such and such address)? (note-i asked b/c not a lot of hyde park restaurants deliver to our place)
phone guy: for takeout or delivery?
    me: ummm...delivery....
phone guy: yea we do. *stops talking*
me: sooo...i'd like to place an order for delivery please...

so about two and half hours later, we finally got our food, a mildly amusing story, and narrowly averted getting an order mixup disaster from the delivery guy. i thought that by calling at 4:30, it wouldn't be as busy, but i guess not. the pizza was good as always, just be prepared to possibly wait longer than the wait time that they quote, and check the order slips stapled to the bags before the delivery guy leaves.

The food is pretty good, considering it takes an hour to be fed and the seating is rather tight, but the service is HORRIBLE! Our waiter was a complete butthole. As we were eating he was pretty much rushing us to finish. It's pretty sad when the bus boy exemplified greater customer service than the waiter did. And we also requested that the bill be separated and the cashier sarcastically said "yes as long as you do the dividing yourself" and he pretty much threw the receipt back at me on to the floor ( the Guy was about 500 pounds standing at about 6'5) . Never again will I patronize this establishment .

My husband and I ate here during a trip to Chicago to visit family. He expressed a desire to have Chicago style deep dish pizza and this place was recommended to us.

We went on a Wednesday evening and there were plenty tables available. We ordered fried cheese as an appetizer and we were happy with the quality of the little triangles that we were presented with. The presentation and the sauce were perfect!

We ordered a deep dish pizza and our server was very attentive, explaining that it would take about 40 minutes. We were fine with this and the pizza was delicious. We may be back to try their thin crust pizza as well!

I've been to Chicago three times now, and I am embarrassed to say that it took me three times to try the famous Chicago deep dish. My sister and her friends went to school in Chicago, and were the ones showing me around. The first night I got to there, we took a walk to Giordano's in Hyde Park. It was a Thursday, so the restaurant wasn't very busy. We ordered a medium half and half pizza -- Half Super Veggie (Mushrooms, green peppers, onions, broccoli, black olives, artichokes & spinach) and Half Pesto Chicken. Both halves were delicious and super filling! I could barely finish two slices. The pesto chicken half was a recommendation made by the server, and I thought it was a fantastic choice. Overall, I thought the service was great and the food was pretty good. Beware that it takes about 40 minutes to make a deep dish pizza.

I can not give it 5 starts because I do not have anything to compare it to! I had Deep dish Chicago pizza last time I came, but I was too drunk to know if it was good or not! LOL! The only comparison I have is Patxi's pizza in San Francisco - which still doesn't count!

I have to say I wouldn't mind if my house smelt like this at all times. The only thing that sucked is that the pizza did take a while to come out! So make sure you have time to wait when you get there....because you will wait. But that's for good reason. The pies are HUGE!!!!! I had 2 slices of pizza, and each one weight well over a pound! LOL! Seriously. But it was meaty, saucy, and cheesy all at the same time! Thank you Italians for the creation of these giant things you call pies!!

Before we'd walked in we notice that 20 new  items have been added to the menu. The waitstaff informed us that the restaurant wanted to get back to making good food, so new items have been added and some taken away but the pizza hasn't changed. We were thinking great! We tried the chicken wings, they were fine, seasoned.  The pizza.....that's another story. It was BLAND!!!  No season...just plain as if they just put tomatoes sauce on some crust with sausage and cheese. It almost taste like it came from the freezer. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Their pizza is bomb! I'm not much into the deep dish as its messy and I tend not to eat messy foods, so I opt for thin crust. I lived a couple blocks down but delivery ALWAYS took an hour and a half. Wtf? If their delivery time was shorter, I'd be more likely to order from them. I always get the hawaiian and I'm never disappointed!

Good deep-dish, but too much sauce. Atmosphere is good. Good for people visiting Chicago.

During my first visit to Chicago in 1994, my step-sister took me to Giordano's in Hyde Park. Coming from Brooklyn, NY, at that time, I had my bias in terms of New York Pizza being the best. I mean, where else can you buy pizza where you can fold it? And I come to Chicago and have a stuffed pizza that blows my mind.

An old grade school friend was visiting and so I took her and her cousin to the Hyde Park location, since the Hyde Park Giordano's is the best to me. Stuffed pepperoni, mushroom, and sausage. They still have not lost their touch. My grade school friend and her cousin were very much blown away like I was when I first went to Giordano's.

Since moving to Chicago in 1995, I have been to several Giordano's locations in Chicago proper and in the suburbs. It may be that the one in Hyde Park has sentimental value to it. Hence, there is more taste to the pizza there, evident in the way I love the crust at that location. Then again, it may be that the Hyde Park location is just top at what it does. Either way, Chicago style pizza is now my favourite.

I ordered a pizza (large, half cheese/half mushroom and black olives) for pick up. Anyone who's familiar with the Hyde Park area, knows sometimes street parking can be an event. I picked up my pizza, got it home and the entire pizza is mushroom and black olives. I called and spoke to the assistant manager Sid, who was very rude. I explained what had happen. I felt to make this right, I wanted Giordanos to delivery me a small cheese pizza. My guess wanted the half with mushrooms and black olives. He said they couldn't do this and wanted to know why I didn't check the pizza before leaving. Not only did Michelle, who took the order get my order wrong but my phone number also. I understand mistakes do happen, nobody's perfect but to be rude and nasty to a customer is not acceptable. Because of his tone, I said I will return the pizza and want the amount taken off my charge. When I arrived to the Hyde Park location, I handed Sid my receipt and credit card. While I was putting my credit card in my wallet, he murmured "I'm sorry".  I used to order pizza's for delivery from this location and have never had a problem with an order before. Leona's and Papa Johns will now receive my business.

Sid needs to be properly train on how to treat customers. If I was the assistant manager, I would have said "m'am I'm so sorry, how can we make this right".  Instead Sid is blaming me by asking; "Why didn't I check my pizza before leaving".  Who does that

We ordered for delivery last night despite the luke-warm review average on Yelp.  We had good customer service from the order-taker on the phone and from the driver as well.  Pizza was as good as any we've gotten delivered here in Hyde Park.  Overall a solid 4 stars.  Looking forward to better integration with GrubHub.

stuffed pizza for the win! it's a pretty popular chain in chicago so choose one and enjoy
My friends and I were in Chicago for the weekend and couldn't leave the windy city without trying a chicago style stuffed pizza.. yummm..

Their "hawaiian" pizza is my favorite... can never go wrong with pineapples on your pizza.  The pizzas do take awhile to cook so be prepared to wait a bit.. you can ease your hunger pains by ordering an appetizer beforehand.. but don't let it get you too full cause the size of the pizzas are not a joke..

calamari.. decent.. not super spectacular but we only ordered it cause the pizza needed 45 minutes to cook..

So here's the thing with Giordano's: there's a lot of pizza. A lot of pizza. And you will be full. And if you are starving the night before this will taste like a piece of heaven filled with garlic, cheese, oozing tomato sauce, sausage bits and (somewhat disappointingly) tough but rubbery cardboard crust.

But if you are just say "in the mood for dinner/lunch" and even if you want to try deep dish for the novelty of it all, it's ok. It's not really any different than say any other pizza joint. There's a lot more food, but not much else. Wait 45-60 min after ordering for the pizza to bake, know that the appetizers here are extraordinarily expensive (above $7) and we're looking at a pizza itself that costs 18-20, tastes pretty poor upon reheating the next day and all in all is "good" in that sense that butter tastes good.

Came here for lunch as it was recommended by the info desk of the Science Museum for pizza since we didn't want to eat at the cafeteria and we had to at least try pizza if we're in Chicago.

Overall the place is clean and air conditioned.  We found parking in a residential side street.

We should have tried the classic deep dish pizza but it was a hot summer day and we weren't ready for anything heavy so we opted for the thin-crust.   The plain cheese pizza thin-crust was better than the toppings we had which slid off the cheese.  Service was slow but our waitress was friendly and apologized the wait since they were sorting out who cover what table.   All other tables have ordered deep dish pizza - it looked immensely rich and had an unsightly vision of all of that sitting in my stomach.  If it was winter time, I'm sure it's pure comfort food and satisfying.

After eating the pizza here, I still long for the thin crust kind since the crust in Chicago tastes more like a flavorless breadstick while the ones in NJ/NYC , brick-oven kind is soft but crispy.  In the end - NYC and NJ pizza claims the throne on best tasting pizza.

I would say it's an okay choice if you're calling your order in and picking it up.

But I wouldn't eat in. Ever. Tried to last weekend when my family was in town. We stood there for 5 minutes without so much as a "hello, we'll be with you as soon as we can!" It was like we were invisible. I am usually SUPER understanding because I worked in food service for 3 years. I totally get it that Friday and Saturday nights are busy, but you need to at least acknowledge your customers when they walk in the door. Never again. I'll give my business to Pizza Capri where I am greeted with a friendly hello every time.

Giordano's stuffed pizza was a revelation to me when I first came to Chicago. To me, the taste of Giordano's is the taste of student years at the U of C. The pizza has a heavier, bolder flavor than Edwardo's, its main rival in the neighborhood, but asking me to choose between the two is like asking me to choose between my children.

If you've never tried stuffed pizza, this restaurant is as good as any to start with. (All the comparisons with New York style pizza baffle me. It's like comparing apples to oranges.) Their thin crust pizza is pretty good, too, although (I think) a little expensive for what you get.

As a native New Yorker I'm conditioned to believe one thing and one thing only: New York style pizza is GREATER THAN Chicago style pizza.

Well, if you know me then you know this: I don't really like pizza unless it's from Two Boots or out of the freezer from Ellio's.

With that said I knew I had to try this oft-talked about style of pizza and my host in Chicago lead me to it at Giordano's. We called prior to our arrival at the restaurant to place our order since Chicago style stuffed pizza takes a lot longer to cook than a standard NY pie.

When we arrived our pizza had just emerged from the oven and our most helpful waitress brought us a couple of frosted glasses & a bottle opener for our beer*. We dug into our Special Pizza (sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, onions) and didn't speak until the first slice was gone. I have to say, I kinda enjoyed it. Definitely a hefty meal and certainly one that you can't really do more than once a month (if that!) unless you want to be on the fast-track to a heart attack.

One thing of note: Chicago stuffed pizza definitely does not taste as good cold. The crust is just not edible the next day.

Other than that, not bad. Still not crazy about pizza, but I'd try Chicago style again.

*A lot of places in Chi-town are BYOB. Ah, definitely a wonderful thing...

Deep dish pizza, with loads of cheese. One or two slices will fill the average person, pizzas fall in 18-25 dollar range. We ordered the hawaiian. Unfortunately it seems like they used canned pineapple (unless they actually cut it in that way...), but the canadian bacon was fantastic, so I guess the price was acceptable.

In any case, Giordano's is definitely worth going to at least once.

Be wary, pizzas take ~45 minutes to be cooked after you order, due to the nature of the food. So have a lot of time on your hands!

The pizza is wonderful! I prefer the deep dish stuffed crust over the thin crust. I feel like the deep dish fills us up more and then we have extra for the next day... which is always a good thing!

The delivery persons are always very nice - the buzzer to our door is broken and it's hit or miss as to whether or not I'll hear it. I always ask when ordering that the delivery person call when they are here but they always ring the bell - which doesn't work - then I get a call from the irritated person at the restaurant -your pizza is there - you don't answer the bell. Well - it's broken. *SIGH* and I mentioned that when I ordered and you said 'okay - he will call'... Geez.

Other than that - it is awesome, filling, and we will most assuredly be ordering from them again and again... :)

    A solid 4 stars....

While this place was great let me tell you up front that Chicago Pizza (either deep dish or thin crust) ain't got nothing on New York Style pizza. Additionally, I think Chicago is a much cooler hip city than the big apple.

Both pizzas I ordered from Giordanos were delivered to my room due to weather conditions and being a bit too intoxicated and having the munchies. The deep dish was much better than the thin crust. Both were good though! The deep dish had the crust filled with cheese and my oh my was it filling. Both of the pizzas I ordered were very flavorful, the sauce was just right, and there wasn't too much grease.

A very good selection for pizza if you're in Chicago

    Really good pizza.
Went to giordano's yesterday on a quest for deep dish..after surveying the locals I received pizza recommendations across the board, but we chose giordano's due to proximity (I was starving!)

The pizza does not disappoint, but it does take 45min to make! We ordered a salad to stave off the hunger. (don't order anything more than a salad or you won't be able eat your pizza)

The pizza was awesome! The dough was chewy (but in a good way) and the sauce was very tasty and a touch spicy!
    - we ordered the small pizza and it was more than enough for 2 ppl. In fact, we ate the leftovers for breakfast and they were AMAZE!!

The decor of the place was like applebee's so don't expect authenticity!

Mmmm...thick slices stuffed with melty, stringy cheese, perfectly cooked veggies (not soggy, not raw), and topped with well-seasoned tomato sauce.  Right down to the crust that's flaky on the edges and warm and soft inside, this is exactly what I want in a Chicago-style deep dish pizza.  We even got chilled glasses for the beers we brought (BYOB, no extra fees)!  Service was attentive and food hit the spot.  It may be a bad thing that I live a few blocks away from this restaurant.

This location was recently remodeled, but in such a way that leaves you scratching your head and wondering, 'what's different?' The revolving door and revised kitsch are the stand-out new features.

The summer pizza crowds aren't too crowded, the pretty full dining room isn't too noisy, and the pizza comes out fairly quickly (in pizza baking terms). The service is good & everyone has a smile (one of the rare Hyde Park businesses of which this is true).

Of course the pizza is good, but you already know that (why else are you looking at these reviews?). This location is definitely A-OK, and that's about 3 stars better than most of Hyde Park's offerings.

I'm a excited about this review. It will be short. (That's a lie. Ya'll know me!).

Bestest thing about this Giordano's? It's BYOB with no corkage fee, supplies the wine opener and the glasses. To put salsa verde on my taco salad? It's like 3 blocks from Binny's express, so if you forgot it was BYOB before getting there, it takes 2 secs to run to Binny's and WERK IT OUT.

Our waitress was super nice. (Thanks Tara). The restrooms are clean, and the food is good. They forgot to put spinach on our Veggie Supreme pizza, so gave us half off! Umm, any place that's giving me discounts along with good food, makes my insides jump for joy. Well, I guess that's all I have for this one. Good pizza, what more do you want? Oh look, I guess I didn't lie. Bye Now.

Really good deep dish.  Girodanos is good pizza, I get tired of these superlative "not the ultimate deep-dish" type reviews.  This is good food!  The crust is unique and has a great cracker flavor.  The price is fair and I got awesome service (the waiter was very polite and even served the first piece of Pizza to my wife and i).

    Yummy!

    P.S.
The cheese deep dish tastes awesome after a night in the refrigerator...

Ok, everyone knows Giordano's pizza is awesome, it's my favorite in the world. However this particular place sucks in my opinion for two or three reasons.
    1. No place to sit if you're ordering out if it's packed and you have to wait (I've never experienced or seen the latter be a problem though)
    2. It seems it takes longer than other locations to cook the pizza. They told me 45 minutes but it took like an extra 10 minutes in which I had to stand around waiting.
    3. The cashier people seemed.... dense and like they didn't want to be there. Which was the biggest reason I'm giving this location a down-grade. It's no secret that this location has bad service and it shows.

Ordered a pizza for delivery the other night, and the quality of the pizza was excellent buuuuuut....

It took over an hour from the time of my call to reach my door. This isn't a huge sticking point for me, but I figured that it should be mentioned. There was also a significant delivery charge attached, which brought the grand total of my small ten-inch pizza with three toppings to $23. I tipped the driver an extra $3 because I wasn't sure if the delivery charge went to him or not. A tasty, but damned expensive pizza.

The toppings were good but sparse, the cheese however was absolute perfection. Gooey but firm, flavourful and not overpowering. I had a stuffed pizza so there was extra cheesy goodness inside- I'd recommend this route if you've never tried it before because chances are you haven't had it this good (that's what she said...?).

I'm sure I'll end up here again at some point and I'll see about a higher or lower rating, but for delivery I'd say this is a solid three-star joint.

    I give Giordano's 4 stars!
Which is twice as many as I gave their not-so-friendly neighbor to the south, Edwardo's.

Waaay better service and marginally better pizza.
One of the more decent places to eat in HP.

Far rom the best pizza in the city, or even in its own chain, but in Hype Park it's as good as anywhere but Chol's. Perfectly solid stuffed pizza, and while a bit pricey, your pizza will be more than filling enough to make it a decent bargain actually. Expect a long wait on delivery, as it takes almost an hour to make a stuffed pie.

Great sauce, mounds of gooey, stretchy cheese, flaky, tasty crust (though there can sometimes bit too much of it), make for a solid, if not outstanding Chicago-style place.

I used to prefer this location over the many others downtown because of the proximity, however, I went here a while ago with some friends and my experience was not that great. First off, we received horrible service, which is a no-no and when they brought us our pizza, the crust was overcooked, cracked up and very burnt. One of my friends tasted a slice and said that it wasn't that great.

So we asked for a refund. And apparently the policy is not the customer is always right, but all we care about is your money. They would not give us a refund, claiming that my friend ate a piece of the pizza, which means that makes us ineligible for a refund.

    Umm...what? SMH.

The pizza was horrible here, don't waste your time on the terrible service either. Go to another Giordano's.

There are three things that I LOVE in this world. Basketball, Summers in the Chi, and Chicago Style Pizza. Grwoing up on the south side, Giordanos was one of the premier establishments for pizza. As a youth I was addicted to this pizza, I once considered mailing one to Atlanta during my days of undergrad.

There are several Giordanos in this city, but this is the one I would call home. Located in the historic HP neighborhood and within walking distance to the University of Chicago, this a gem for all southsiders. The restaurant boasts no liquor pairings but allows BYOB for patrons. A must try for all Chicago natives and guests.

I reccommend the stuffed sausage and pepperoni and for you pescatarians, the spinach and shrimp.

This is the best deep dish pizza in Chicago IMHO. It was closed for a while for renovations but it's now re-opened and it's true - you don't know how good you have it til it's gone! But boy am I glad it's back!!!

Advice - it takes 30-45 minutes to make a deep dish pizza. Giordano's takes preorders over the phone so that it'll be ready for you and your group when you arrive. I don't know if other deep dish places do this but I was impressed and grateful they did!

I love Giordano's pizza! It's my favorite stuffed pizza in Chicagoland...However, this location really tries on my patience.

My typical visit to the Hyde Park Giordano's involves ordering, eating, and paying the check. The wait times aren't bad for eat-in, but the staff isn't very attentive. Not good with checking in, asking if you want refills, etc. Also, one time we actually wanted to order dessert, but the waitress brought the check without asking right when we finished eating , so we decided to go elsewhere for dessert. It wasn't even crowded, so they certainly didn't need the table.

And one time last summer, there was an altercation between employees when we were dining in...Yelling and swearing in the restaurant. Not good.

The food is great, they need to work on the service part...Go to the one downtown on Lake...Always good service there.

The best.  What a blessing it was to have a Giordanos in Hyde Park.  I ate this pizza about once a week for 3 years.  It never got old.  I just had to graduate is all.

    SKIP IT!!!!!!!
I was soooooooooo EMBARRASSED, when I took my out of town relatives to the Hyde Park location. After bragging about the deep dish pizza, I was so far from the truth.

This was my first time at the Hyde Park location, I normally patronize the Mag Mile location, near my job. It was a late Sunday night & I didn't feel like driving downtown from the south side, so my husband suggested the Hyde Park location.

There was nothing to the pizza, but pure NASTY!!! The pizza was dry & cold, lacking Italian flavor. The place was also not the cleanest, especially the ladies restroom. The only good thing about this place is you can BYOB. That was really not important to someone who was hungry & has a full bar at home.

My favorite deep dish in the city.  This restaurant itself has impossibly long delivery times (so I recommend carrying out or eating in).  I also recommend that if you're eating in, call ahead and order what you want about 30 minutes or so before you plan on getting there.  A large deep dish pizza takes 45 minutes to cook.  Eating in, though it's almost always busy, is a fun atmosphere.  It's BYOB.  What else...  Oh, this is a personal opinion, but take it as you will: while I love toppings in regular pizzas, when it comes to deep dish pizzas, I always just get cheese.  The toppings cost like $2.00 or more for just one topping and I've found don't add that much to it.  The emphasis should be on the delectable cheesiness.  Also, if you have trouble digesting dairy, note there is TONS of cheese.  God I love cheese.

    Anyway, 5 stars!
