Golden Apple Cafe is average compared to the many bakeries in Chinatown. The buns are yummy, but the lunch dishes aren't that great. I tried the rice noodles and fried noodles, which was overflowing  with tasteless sauce and oil.
The prices are cheap, however. (65 cents for a pineapple top bun!) I love to come here after 5:00 pm to get discounted buns: buy one get one free (Although the prices mysteriously changes from 65 cents to 90 cents). I would rate this cafe with four stars, but the service was terrible. The cashier tried to rip me off because she didn't know that I knew about the buy one get one free offer. When asked her about it, she just said "Yeah", changed the price, and continued watching the Chinese drama on TV.
This bakery is definitely at the top of my list in Chinatown. Fresh food and great prices make it hard to pass up. Â If you're bringing more than 5 people, the afternoon seems like a better time than the morning.
My favorites include:
Shrimp won ton soup  (Hong Kong style)
Ham & Egg bun
BBQ Pork pastry
Apple pie pastry
Butterfly cookies (order of 4)
You can always get a cup of milk tea for under a dollar. Â Pick out a sandwich, a pastry and tea for $3.00 and you should leave contented.
In addition to the baked goods, you can also find a full range of decent restaurant fare that is always fun to share with your table mates.
