For take-out Chinese food, this place works pretty good. Â It is in a convenient location for those driving along 9A or the Saw Mill River Pkwy. Â The restaurant sits within a strip-mall and does give you ample room for parking.
The food has a good sized list with options that one comes to expect in the U.S. when ordering from such an establishment; i.e. Kung Pao Chicken, Shrimp w/ Garlic Sauce, Beef w/ Broccoli, etc. Â Most of the dishes are pretty good, although I would prefer them to be spicier, especially those they list with a chili pepper next to them. Â And for those dining in, expect a rather dated setting. Â If they made a few upgrades in this area, they would be likely to see a nice increase in sit-down checks.
We have been going to Golden Wok for years, as we live in the neighborhood. Â It's always been consistent and serves decent Chinese food. Â We had a terrible experience last week, though, and we will not return.
We ordered a chef's special eggplant, chicken and shrimp dish. Â We ordered it "spicy." Â The dish tasted like they left the sauce off completely. Â We told the waiter and he brought us soy sauce and chili sauce to help liven up the dish. Â It still didn't taste good. Â We had ordered a couple of other dishes, so we were not hungry at this point. Â
He took the dish away, mostly not eaten and gave us the bill. Â The bill included the dish we hadn't eaten. Â I complained the manager, who refused to credit our bill for the uneaten food. Â She went and looked in the garbage can, where he had thrown the food away, and said it looke like we had eaten a good portion of the dish, which wasn't true. Â After much more discussion, she agreed to charge us 1/2 of the full amount for that item. Â
I was so angry about the poor customer service that I will not return.
still looking for a good Chinese rest in this area.
This one is an Americanized Chinese throwback to the '70s, complete with the expected menu and food quality. Â But we know better now. Â Also not cheap. Â Service was friendly and attentive. Â I'm not sure whether the duck was actually from a duck.
Growing up in the neighborhood, I spent my childhood at Golden Wok. Â As a young one, we got take-out approximately once a week, so I've easily had Golden Wok hundreds of times. Â The lunch special is awesome- it's like $7 (it used to be $5- damn inflation) for a soup and meal with fried rice. Â Best dishes:
chicken with broccoli
chicken with 3 kinds of mushrooms
chicken chow mein
moo shoo chicken
chicken with Chinese vegetables in a white sauce
egg drop soup
fried rice
love
They make their own fried noodle cracker chip things (whatever they're called) which are amazing and crispy and greasy and go even better with duck sauce. Â They used to make their own fortune cookies, but they don't anymore. Â Probably for the best because the homemade ones were always a little stale.
It's technically "upscale" because it has waiter service, cloth napkins, and not one of those order-at-the-counter places with the pictures of the food. Â The price is cheap- about $10ish per dish. (It used to be $7 a dish! Â Oh 1990s, I miss you.)
The first place in NYC where I lived was in Chinatown, and I forbid to eat the food there. Â I'd find lame excuses to go to Ardsley for Golden Wok, and I'd take food back with me.
Dear Golden Wok, I love you to death and miss you with all my heart. Â Please cater my wedding (or open up a branch in NYC.) Â Also, they don't deliver, which sucks.
And a note: the take-out portions are bigger than the dine-in.
I go here when I want Chinese food in the neighborhood. Â There are three Chinese restaurants in this small town and this is the only one I will go to.
My daughter was in the mood for beef with snow peas, so I called up my order and added a small roast pork fried rice and a shrimp egg roll. Â I was skeptical about ordering the beef because way too many times at these American Chinese restaurants the beef is tough and chewy. Â Boy was I surprised! Â That beef was so dang tender and tasty! Â The roast pork fried rice was yummy too and the egg roll was greasy, just the way I like it!! Â
Hey, I'm Chinese and I have eaten a lot of good authentic Chinese food, but sometimes I just get a hankering for that good old American/Chinese fare.
Pleased to eat you. Â
How often does one find a Chinese restaurant straight out of the 90's that serves up the cheap classics that I find myself craving time and time again? Â Now multiply that amazingness by 100 for having a gluten free menu, and you have Golden Wok Cafe. Â This place is not pretentious, the food will not blow your socks off, but for not having had pink roasted pork in YEARS, I can say that they have a friend in me. Cue Toy Story music and a happy belly.
I thought maybe I was going to be the first to review this place-but someone beat me to it by three years!!
I've heard about Helen and her restaurant for about three years and my wife has heard about it for about twenty years and finally we made the trip there from Nevada! Â This is a tasty place!
Full bar-get the Rusty Nail!  My wife's parents have been going here for over twenty years-they live nearby in Hartsdale.  I have to say (because of her parents), going to a restaurant and feeling like a regular with just one visit can really spoil a person!  Helen even played a practical joke on me-I went to the bathroom for a moment and when I came back, there was a plate of food at my  place setting with a metal domed cover on it.  She said my food was ready! I lifted the dome to find a chili dog on the plate-well, it was actually a hotdog bun and a bowl of beanless chili.  It seems, the employees and owner's family were having chili that day.  That chili was among the best I have ever had-very tasty and a good amount of spice without being too hot!  Our next dish was also off the menu.  It was called (something like) salt and pepper fish.  It was a lightly breaded and fried plate of small fish ( each one was about 6 inches long and  about just over inch inch at the widest.  Helen said the fish was called 'whiting".  I guess if I wasn't so lazy I could go to the internet and see what whiting is also called. Some of us ended up getting the the salt and pepper lobster. Â
Helen's husband is the main chef, and as evidenced by the chili-that man can cook and is versatile too! This restaurant is know for doing some special dietary dishes and customers drive a long way especially for the gluten- free menu.  So, come here and get the dietary dishes or the regular food-or if you are lucky, maybe you will get some chili! I think you should check it out, everything I ate was good!
I grew up eating this chinese food in a small town of westchester. The chinese is made with fresh ingredients and the menu is very expansive. This is not gourmet chinese food by any means, but it is much better than most places I find in NYC. If you're ever traveling through stop by and grab a bite.
