I love a great dive bar, and this place is the dive-y-est of dives. Â I live in the neighborhood, and discovered it thanks to my roommate's jogging habits. Â I'm doing this 40 day lent opposite thing leading up to my birthday in April, where I go to a different bar each night for 40 days to celebrate a year of my life so far. Â I wasn't in the mood tonight, feeling lazy. But my roommate mounted a second wind effort... All people doing a lent event probably need a cheerleader. :0) Â
Back to the Green Horse. Apparently it's been in business since 1958, sometimes closed for filming, but looks like a motel changed into a bar. They open daily around 9pm, CASH ONLY, and owner operated by Rosa who makes a good Mai tai. DJ, pool, mini dance floor and a fire pit are all hidden behind a speak-easy-type buzzer-entry system. Â Lots of regulars hang out here, and hip hop typical spouts from the juke box/ DJ. But don't ask for a bloody Mary, because they don't have the supplies. Â If you have OCD, you might want to skip this one, but you'll be happy as clam in salt water if dives are your thing. Last tip... If you don't know how to blend or make new friends, you'll stick out, but Rosa is friendly and welcoming. Â Since this is walking distance from my place, I plan to be a regular. :o)
