My Cobb Salad last night was fantastic, and my husband said that the steak in his steak salad was "melt-in-your-mouth" steak. Â The couple we were with liked their food (potato skins and Greek salad). Â Our server was a good server. Â I just wish I lived closer to The Grog Grill because that was the best salad I've ever eaten in my 60 years here on planet earth!
Review Source:Fantastic fries. Friendly service. Cozy, casual atmosphere.
Sure, this Main Line stalwart seems to attract an older crowd (40+) at times. Â But the comfortable atmosphere, decent beer selection, and standard -- but well executed -- pub fare make The Grog a neighborhood gem. Â The chicken fingers can't be beat: the perfect marriage of golden brown crunch and tender meat. Â The turkey burger is average. Â The real can't-miss is the French fries. Â Crispy, with a hint of a crunchy coating, and perfectly salted...they could be a meal in themselves! Â If you're looking for a place to grab a drink, watch a game, or have a very casual meal with friends, this is the place to go in Bryn Mawr.
Holy crap, could we stop for a second and just reflect on what they're offering here? I mean 50 cents wings, and I think like 1.50 or 2.00 Coors Light? I'm sorry, I'm sure we're all picky eaters, and genuine aficionados of fine dining.
But if you don't like this kind of place there is something wrong with you. Like literally something deep rooted, festering & pestering, and disgustingly wrong with you. I mean if you open up a person who doesn't like the Grog you'd probably find a miniature alien version of Richard Simmons controlling the person from some awkward alien cockpit.
Also try the Hot Beef au Jus, and ask for horseradish sauce. I mean if that doesn't make you happy, then you're hopeless. Plus all the bartenders and waiter/waitresses are extremely nice and helpful in every way. But again won't act like you're their best friend in the whole world!
My parents love the Grog! Â It has a fun atmosphere and I really like sitting in the booths upstairs. Â They also have the buffalo wing special where on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, its 50 cents per wing. Â I couldn't get over that I got 30 wings for $15... good deal! Â And the Sesame Soy glazed wings are delicious! Â They are very sweet. Â
I'd have to say, aside from their wings, this place is kind of so- so... I really wanna give them 3 stars, but the wing special is really good and the sesame soy glaze is the best I've ever had on buffalo wings... Plus, this is kind of my dad's comfort... we go here for lunch when he feels like bonding...
Up front need to tell you that this is my Cheers so I may be a tad prejudice. This is a great local bar that will give you a good pour, has a decent # of beers on tap and plenty of liquor choices. I've always been a fan of the food. The burgers, wings and sandwiches are fine and I'm also a fan of the full dinners with the meatloaf and chicken pot pie being two of my favorites (both are great values for the money). Try to get one of the booths looking out over Lancaster Ave on the second floor ... that's the best place to give you a feel more of a resteraunt vs. a bar. A lot of the rest of the seating makes you feel like you are in a bar ... which you are!
Review Source:I'd growl a little when my friends wanted to go out to the Grog on a weekday night. During the day, it's a regular ol' pub on Lancaster serving greasy pub food and various beers on tap. At night, I guess it's still a regular ol' pub-- but it's so tiny and dark and the music is so loud, I don't understand the reason behind being there, other than to mope over the depressing realities of Bryn Mawr, PA.
Review Source:Just went to The Grog for the first time last night, and I'm not planning on going back anytime soon. As soon as we sat down, our waitress treated us with an attitude that seemed to suggest we were wasting her time and this attitude persisted throughout the evening, as if we were an inconvenience. She also continually forgot to bring things to the table that we requested numerous times, such as water and napkins.
As for the food, the menu seemed to be trying to do too many types of pub fare, so that the individual dishes suffered. The appetizers we ordered (bruschetta and calamari) were subpar versions of what they could have been, and the burger a friend of mine ordered did not seem like anything special given the price.
In terms of atmosphere, my friends and I didn't have a problem. Typical pub feel.
Overall though, the poor service really turned me off from here as an eatery. I can only imagine going to get a drink at the bar in the future, but with the other options on the Mainline, they'd have to have one hell of a special to bring me back.
atmosphere: A+
service: A+
Prices: a bit pricey
Food: all right
we got some beers, some wings, and jalapeno poppers. It was a really good experience overall, but the hot wings, while crispy and hot, had a weird sauce--a bit too sweet, and tasted like there was tomato?! I was not a huge fan. The poppers seemed to be filled with ricotta, which was also a little odd but not entirely unpleasant. Definitely enjoyed the grog overall, definitely will return and try out some other menu items.
My S.O. and I had been frequenting The Grog maybe once or twice a week for a couple of months. It seemed like the perfect bar in the area for us. Casual, clean with decent food & friendly bartenders. It quickly became our go to place and we looked forward to our visits there.
One evening at the Grog, my better half ordered a tenderloin steak salad. She ordered it medium rare. It arrived well done. She very politely alerted the bartender who was more than gracious and understanding about the situation. She went to the kitchen and requested new steak, cooked as requested.
What arrived was basically cow sushi. Red, cold center. It had barely touched a grill.
The cook messed up...but instead of just cooking the order properly, like they should have done initially, they decided to turn it into basically a grudge match...and an insult.
Believe me, it wasn't lost on us. I asked my girl if she wanted to go to the Grog the other day, she said "I'm over it since they messed up my steak last time. Fuck them."
It's not a reflection on the ownership, bartenders or waitstaff. This would have been a four star review prior to this incident. One dickhead of a cook can ruin it for an otherwise decent establishment.
Oh well, your loss.
Let me start out by saying I am a huge fan of the place! I come here quite frequently with friends since I go to school close by. I cannot think of a better hangout. The food is good, not great, but good enough for what you pay for, but the real charm is the environment. It has the traditional wooden walls and long bar, it's like I am in Cheers! I think this is such a fantastic place to hang out, enjoy a drink, and talk with friends on a Friday night!
Review Source:Not a Big Fan... Â The Grog seems like a place I would like... Â its a bit Divey, kinda small regular bar food and beers etc.. Â I have friends who would go here over everywhere else but I just don't get it... Â My girlfriend used to go to Villanova and this place was in walking distance from her apartment so we went by default a lot of times... Â I got on a martini kick for awhile and now that I live in NYC I cannot believe that still to this day the most expensive Martini I have ever had was at ... THE GROG!!!???/ Â WTF?? Â Â there have also been a couple time there has been some shadiness with the bill, etc., etc. Â I'm not making any accusations or anything like that., i would just assume it was my mistake, I'm just saying something didn't quite add up more than once. Â Food is decent, nachos were soggy and not very good - its a pet peeve of mine when I ask if its real melted cheese on nachos or "nacho cheese" and a server says real cheese and then the nachos are covered and soaking in nacho cheese... Â I don't get it, not a huge Grog fan.. to each his own I guess!
Review Source:A great old bar on the Mainline. Â It's got that Irish pub feel. Â The bar with a few tables is on the first floor and there is an additional dining room on the second. Â Both floors are small but it's nice to have the separate second floor room.
The food is several notches above bar food. Â I'd call it gastro pub level. Â I actually think most folks will be surprised by the quality of the food. Â The portions are substantial. Â A great burger with fries goes for about $9. Â Shepard's Pie is $12. Â There are other entrees that go up over $20. Â The variety is really high for a pub.
This is also a place to go for interesting beers. Â If you are a craft beer guy or gal you will be reasonably pleased. Â Try the happy hour. Â Lots of locals having a great time.
Went here for st. patty's day! Wanted that whole irish feel, this was the closest thing we found. Got green beer, it was huge & only $3 :) As we were leaving a bunch of college students walked in for the whole sweet sixteen basketball game. Before than it was families at a pub/bar with little kids eating and it was like $8. I got a philly cheese steak because when in philly get a philly cheese steak duhh! It was okay only ate half a little to greasy for me. My cousin got a burger and at the whole thing, she said it was yummy. Will def go here again for drinks because that bud light I got was $3 and was equivalent to maybe 2.5 glasses so cheap! Food was descent price under $10.
Review Source:I used to eat at The Grog back in 2000-2001. Â They have, hands down, the best French Onion soup I've ever had. Â All my friends who I've eaten there with agree. Â It's the best. Â Period. Â It's worth going here just to order the French Onion soup.
One of the other reviewers mentioned not liking it. Â This is insanity.
I am sorry I get excited when a place has cider. so many places don't!
I have been to this spot about 3 times, each time trying the wings, or one of the specials. I have even stopped by while waiting with friends prior to catching the train.
Low key, filled with happy regulars, its a great place to drop by.....
My friend and I needed a place to eat before we attended the Bryn Mawr Film Institutes Sing-a-long Wizard of Oz, so, we saw the menu posted outside and decided to give it a whirl.
Now, it was crowded with local folks having dinner and happy hour, but, we were served very quickly. the menu seems reasonable, with Wraps,Hot Sandwiches,Panini's, Irish traditional fare and Pastas. We both ordered hot sandwiches: I ordered a Chicken Cheese Steak which is actually a chicken breast chopped with American cheese and fried onions. I added mushrooms. Very delicious. My friend had a craving for Corned Beef Sandwich because she had a delicious one on vacation in Maine. Said it was really good. Both Sandwiches comes with fries.
Good pub grub and a fairly wide selection of beers.
The bathroom was clean as was the whole establishment. Now I know I can come back when I need a quick meal before/after attending a movie at BMFI.
Went here for happy hour with a friend I haven't seen in 21 years. It was close to where my cousin lived and so we were scanning Lancaster where we can sit, have a drink and nosh on appetizers. To say the least, she stopped here. It's quite the pub hangout spot for locals.
I ordered the artichoke dip while my friend had the french onion soup and salad here. She wasn't too impressed with the french onion soup and asked to take it away and our server was happy to take it off the bill. Which I thought was really nice of her and she also asked if my friend wanted something else from the kitchen. I thought she handled this situation well.
I was just happy to have my first Guinness in Philly.
the grog was my favorite bar during college. while slightly pricey, i loved the atmosphere and the bartenders.
the burgers and fries are god's foods. the drinks are nice and strong. and the owner, billy, is my hero.
billy once paid for every drink that my friends and i had over the course of 4 hours on a sunday no less. the birthday girl's level of drunkenness is legendary. to the point where the said birthday girl was outside the bar sleeping on the pavement with a huge grin on her face right around closing time.
you cant beat that.
go to the grog for food and the company of the staff. a fun game to play there is: "guess the bryn mawr students" amongst the horde of villanovans.
Oh, the Grog. Â So many sketchy nights began here. Â More than once, a member of my party exposed herself at the bar. Â
...which is not to say I didn't have normal nights here, either. Â Most of my experiences here were normal and clean, like the bar itself. Â Often they involved the Grog's awesome food (check out the wings!) and equally awesome beer selection (which is not kind on a college student's wallet, though not unreasonable). Â It's a good place to meet up with friends or have a business lunch (it's much less sketchy by day.)
A final word of caution: watch out for the leering men - there's an ass-grabber among them.
The Grog (formerly Mallory's) is an upscale 2 story bar and restaurant in Bryn Mawr right on Lancaster Avenue.
The food at the Grog is probably some of the best that I have ever had. The Grog burger is the best! Â Definitely a must try! Â The filet mignon salad is pretty awesome too as well as the shepherd's pie. Â There is a full bar with a wide selection of international beer and liquor.
Service is average but friendly. Â You will wait a while for your entree if the restaurant is busy so come prepared. The service was good upfront but after the entrees were served we were wondering if our waitress went home. Upstairs is nonsmoking until 9 pm. The decor is pretty plain but remember that it is a bar and because of that it is pretty small.
Good food, comfortable atmosphere, clean, but not always consistent.
The Grog is a good "Where everybody knows your name" kind of bar in the middle of Suburbia. It has a lot of great drinks specials ($2 Red Bull and Vodkas on Monday nights as the previous review said!). It's also has the perfect Happy Hour atmosphere. It also has tasty food that is worth checking out.
It's also close to plenty of universities, restaurants, and The Bryn Mawr Film Institute. which makes it an incredibly ideal suburban watering hole.
My friends and I once affectionately referred to The Grog as "the place where old men come to leer". Â It's your typical sports bar, but the food is pretty good and the portions are huge -- I recommend the hummus. However, The Grog truly won me over when I went there to celebrate finishing my senior thesis -- I'm a fan of any place that serves $2 Red Bull and vodkas (after 9 on Monday nights, y'all!)
