This is my new favorite less expensive take out Chinese restaurant! Â The owner is a sweet old lady, I think the cook is her husband. Â I drove by looking for something to eat one day and yelp pointed me here. Â Since I didn't call it in ahead of time I had to sit and wait 15 minutes or so while the order was cooked. Â Well it's a time portal in there, they say they serve tableside, takeout, or delivery. Â But it's a trip inside, the old, old decor all very dated. Â I can't even explain it. Â It 's not a negative mark against this place, since I view it only as a takeout and delivery spot, but definitely gave me a weird vibe when I walked in. Â It took a lot of faith in my fellow yelpers to push me to order and eat there.
The food was good, mongolian beef spicy, egg roll, and crab ragoon were the things we ordered the couple times we've been. Â Both times the food was identical and pretty good, not overly greasy, not overly spicy. Â The egg rolls and crab ragoon are sized and priced correctly and everything seems homemade. Â The beef used was perfect and tender, not shoe leather.
I would be happy to come back again if I'm in the area and looking for some Chinese food.
You come to Guey Lon for the food, not the decor.
I have been coming here for over ten years, and I am always pleased with the food. The owners use the freshest ingredients and take everyone's dietary requests in earnest while preparing the dishes.
The best crab rangoon can be found here. The egg rolls are an acquired taste, I used to dislike them, but now they have grown on me.
If you can, come for the lunch combos, as they are cheaper and come with the fried rice and the egg roll. I always enjoy the sesame and orange chicken, the mongolian beef, beef with oyster sauce, and any of the vegetable options. Â
For dessert, try a smoothie or Apples Jeanie, which was an option at the Taste of Chicago several years ago.
Usually Guey Lon has coupons that are distributed with the check, good for the next purchase. There are also promotions that happen when there are holidays around to celebrate the occasion.
Speaking of which, the restaurant gets decorated with matching holiday themes. Christmas stuff for Christmas, Hearts and stuff for Valentines, Halloween with Halloween, etc. It definitely is artistic and decorated with it's own flair.
Is it empty? Yes. Take a chance, though, to experience a nice, quiet setting where it's easy to have a nice conversation with someone over some good food in a non-rushed environment.
I went to Guey Lon's based on the favorable reviews the middle of May and thought it was terrible. Â I have never had egg rolls like theirs, it had the strangest taste, the waitress said we make our own so you decide for yourself.
I ordered the Mongolian Beef and thought it was a bit too fatty and chewy for my taste. The portions are huge, I like the way they give you the crispy noodles along with the fried rice, nice touch but I would never go back there again.
What I did like about the restaurant is that it has a nice old school feel to it and the waitress is a hoot, funny and informative, very accommodating. Regardless I 'm still not going back.
Don't park at the McDonald's across the street they will charge you $193.00 in towing fees.  The restaurant has signs all over letting you know not to park there.
Try Lo's China Kitchen at Irving & California instead if your in the neighborhood.  It's a simple no frills place, dine in or carry out. The lunch specials are the way to go with egg roll included.
Another Chinese place to avoid is Lee's Chop Suey at Diversey & Western (kitty corner form the Golden Nugget Restaurant) Â The worst fried rice on the planet.
Got take out for dinner here- cashew chicken, veggie egg foo yung. Â We live in the neighborhood, so we're looking to see what's around. Â We had intended to eat in, but the lack of any other clientele dissuaded us. Â
As others here have noted, Guey Lon doesn't appear to put alot of emphasis on the atmosphere. Â
The staff was pleasant and took an interest in my wife's vegetarian diet, which we appreciated.
The food was very fresh, but extremely bland. Â I'm not sure why it was so bland, but perhaps next time we will request that it be made spicier. Â However, I should emphasize that the cashew chicken dish featured many vegetables, all of which seemed very fresh and full of color, and they even took well to re-heating two days later. Â all in all, I would give this place another try, but I was little surprised at how little taste the food had.
So Guey Lon was ALOT better back in the day but it is still pretty good.
The fried wontons are to DIE for, just so unbelievable good!
Fried rice is DELICIOUS its not that dark brown color, and just has such a better taste than your traditional fried rice.
Egg Rolls are HUGE!
Orange chicken, sesame chicken-fantastic!
Mongolian beef, beef and brocooli- wonderful
everything is very good, generous portions!
Although sometimes I feel that it is a hit or miss with this place.
Guey Lon is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Chicago. Â (Maybe because I tried it and loved it so much that I haven't many others). Â They know their customers and take good care of them. Â Sometimes Jean gives me coupons for free egg rolls which makes me run back there soon after! Â I took my best buddy there last week and we ended up going again two days later, he can't get over how good their chicken is. Â Try it out! Â
Be sure to check their schedule before you go as they changed it recently and are closed a couple of days of the week.
I was really excited based on the yelp reviews, but this place just didn't hit the spot for me. I had the pork fried rice and the hong su chicken. The rice was more steamed than fried. The chicken was bland and unexciting.
The place has a great throwback decor that could be jazzed way up with a little work.
Sorry guys, but this newbie to the neighborhood needs to keep looking for a local Chinese joint.
Guey Lon is a good old fashioned mom 'n' pop, straightforward, no nonsense kind of Chinese restaurant. Â There's no pretension here, just friendly folks making an honest living.
The Mongolian beef that I tried was pretty good, but the fried rice was only alright. Â It's not that the rice was bad or anything; I'm just picky about my fried rice.
Guey Lon is worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood and you're looking for an inexpensive Chinese combination lunch or dinner. Â I don't know that I'd be in a hurry to go a la carte here.
I know it was just a bad night and bad ordering choices. Â But I feel the need to warn all those who go after me...NEVER ORDER THE SHRIMP AND VEGETABLE TEMPURA! Â
It is basically a GIANT TUB of deep fried, greasy mess. Â I was expecting a light tempura batter with fresh, crisp vegetables and shrimp. Â Instead I got this heavy greasy bucket of horrible over fried food. Â
We ended throwing about 75% of it out-just ate the shrimp and a few of what was basically onion strips and french fries. Â
On a positive note-this meal pretty much turned me off of fried food forever. Â
My husband's Oyster Beef was really good though. Â So they only drop one star.
Bleck and yuck. Â You know how crappy Chinese food can still be satisfying? It is like a good greasy burger! Â This was crappy Chinese food with absolutely nothing satisfying about it! Â We ordered spicy black bean chicken and mushroom egg foo young. Â We ate it.... it fed us....but we threw away our left overs because we new we would not want to revisit it the next day. Â I experienced serious take-out regret. Â I should have gone to Silver Seafood!
Review Source:I ordered for take out about 10 minutes before they closed. I didn't realized they closed at 9 - but the lady on the phone didn't seem to mind that I was placing an order 10 minutes before they closed.
I asked if they used MSG and the nice woman on the phone said yes, but that everything was made to order so if I didn't want something with MSG, they would just not cook it with MSG. That was very nice. I ordered the Empress Chicken and a small order of egg rolls. The egg rolls had MSG and the lady said they were pre-made but that was okay.
I quickly jetted over to the location and walked in. There were a few tables full - all of the patrons seemed to be having a nice meal. The women who answered the phone greeted me. She was super sweet. She even gave me a free wood carved flower! They apparently sell them, along with a few other odd items like stuffed animals.
The place was pretty old looking, but still clean.
The Empress Chicken was pretty good - 4 stars. I would order it again. The white rice was kind of tough - but that could be because it was the end of the night. The egg rolls were good - but kind of weird looking stuff inside of them, but still good. The portion was huge - it was shareable.
I may go back and try some other items.
Ok another great chinese place that I have been going to for years and they are even in the Taste of Chicago !!!!!! even better to enjoy down town and a great place with great food... This is definetly one of the stops to make at the Taste if you go. What I aslo love from them is the chinese spaghetti also I have not found another place that offers this and  "Gene" the owner once told me that her son Devon Invented it and put it on the menu???? IDK but I truely love the food here its great...
Review Source:Top notch take out. Â As previous reviews said, everyone was super nice. Â The food was very fresh & light tasting. Â The chicken was very tasty and not fatty. Â The egg rolls were awesome as was the veggie fried rice. Â Just wish they delivered, but its pretty close by anyway! Â Great place to go for some tasty food.
Review Source:They have very fresh and tasty food. The egg rolls are always delicious and not too greasy. The sweet and sour sauce is homemade and very addictive. This is one of the better American style Chinese restaurants in the city. They have been around for decades and are the only Chinese restaurant to participate in the Taste of Chicago [I believe] since year one.
I love the Chinese Spaghetti. It is made with your choice of meat. The sauce is full of veggies with a gingery sweet taste. It has a good amount of burn, too for those who like it spicy. It seems like an "oyster sauce" and molasses type of base.
I've never been disappointed. We happily leave Chinatown to go here.
Jean is the lady behind the counter. Her husband is in the kitchen. They are always nice and very happy to see you. A wonderful family restaurant.
YUM! Â I stopped by here last night because of the reviews you guys have posted and once again, Yelpers did not steer me wrong! Â I wasn't sure what I wanted when I came in, and the woman who I think was the owner made some great suggestions and they were super accommodating. Â Since I'd read that the egg rolls were good, I wanted to try them - only to find out it's an order of 4, which is a bit much for little old me. Â I asked if there was a half order and she said sure - or "we can just make you one if you want." Â
The food was definitely cooked to order, fresh, and flavorful and the owner and staff could not have been any nicer. Â This place is fantastic - GO GO GO!
What a great place. Great Mom and Pop Place (Jean and Dan, are perhaps the friendliest). 51 years, Guey Lon has served Cantonese cuisine in this Jefferson Park neighborhood. Â And a Taste Of Chicago stable for years.
One thing to remember here, everything is made homemade from scratch. So if you are looking for fast food in 10 min. forget it., take it elsewhere. But, if you want good home-cooked type meals then come on in a sit a spell. This place is worth it.
Egg Rolls Rock. Take Out and Dine In only
This little place is great.
No no no! Â I have tried this place a few times, trying to be fair (maybe they just had a bad day?) but I have always been disappointed with the food here. Â I used to work in the area and phoned my orders ahead, but each time they would forget to get to it until I showed up in the restaurant. Â After those few disappointments with food and service, I gave up. Â Never again.
Review Source:A lot of people have probably had Guey Lon's fried food at Taste of Chicago, where they usually have a booth.
This is a great Chinese restaurant which serves a mostly non-Chinese clientele (their menu reflects this, for example they are popular for their egg rolls and crab rangoon, both of which are in fact delicious). But while this isn't a super-Chinese style establishment, all their food is really good.
The real superlative here is that the owners, Jean and Dan, are perhaps the friendliest Chinese restaurant proprietors I know of... they remember and care about their customers and make every visit more pleasant.
